While most people in the internet wrestling community (I’ve read this on countless forums) might think Chris Jericho came up with the phrase “ask him ref”, he has gone on record stating that he actually picked it up from Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger. Keiichi Yamada wrestled as ‘Flying’ Fuji Yamada during an excursion to England in the late 80s, before he was the half lion half tiger superhero in Japan. Yamada mainly feuded with Mark ‘Rollerball’ Rocco during his time here, having an amazing series of forward thinking and ground breaking back and forth bouts over the World Heavy Middleweight title (which he won twice), for All Star Promotions. We’ll cover Rocco at some point in the future. He can be heard shouting “ask him” in the video clip here though. I personally think it’s most likely that it’s something he picked it up from the guys that trained him years before and that it its use could even go back further. I like to think it has made its way to Jericho and todays product, via Liger, via Rocco and via Wigan and Billy Riley et al! Not saying Rocco was the first to use it, but he definitely shouted it louder on TV and made it part of his gimmick like Jericho has done, and so it’s highly likely the young Liger picked it up from his U.K excursions, along with many other things from his mentor Rocco! #askhimref #britishwrestling #worldofsport #jushinthunderliger #rollerballrocco #firstpost #allstarwrestling #chrisjericho (at Colston Hall Bristol) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQeCS_-hjMS/?utm_medium=tumblr
