"You have to put John down at some point, Dean," Sam sighed, looking over the table.  It had become cluttered under the research he had been gathering.  Hunting wasn't quite the same with a baby around, but it happened.  They couldn't stop.  Not until they found a place to settle, and every place they stopped to start looking, a monster tended to pop up.  So they had surrendered to it.  Hunt on the side, rely on anyone they could that they knew to babysit.  

Until they could find a place.  Sam had argued that they couldn't raise the kid the way they were raised.  Motel to motel was how they grew up, weapons, fighting, military style...they'd teach their son how to defend himself, Sam insisted on that, but not growing up on the road.  

And Dean...agreed to a point.  They argued over what the child would know and wouldn't know, they argued over what was best at the moment for the kid, over where to stay, where in the country to live, hiding out in the west like Bobby, or settling into a busy city where it would still be hard to find them.  They argued, and made up at night with kisses, whispers, those moments when Johnny finally slept and they could rest for a little while.

So they looked for a place to live, and they managed with what they had, the trunk of the impala half their bags, and half baby supplies.  The carseat in the back almost strange to see there when Dean went to buckle Johnny in.  Sam had to struggle to even hold the boy sometimes, you had to fight Dean for the time.

The baby cried, and Dean was there, holding, moving, assuring.

"I will," Dean objected, swaying a little in place, patting the boy's back.  "I'll put him down when he's ready.  He'll just bitch and cry if I put him down now.  He's too much like you." Glancing away consciously, the bravado put up to cover the actual care, it faded as Dean looked to the baby, his concentration clear.  This one wasn't going to have the life they did.

Sam only smiled, looking back to the paperwork, and letting the page he had been holding up fall.  In one swift movement, he was up and walking over, kissing Dean on the cheek in a rare show of affection.

"You're amazing." 

There was no need to say I love you.  Dean knew.
