The journey of a lifetime
In the next hour and a half, I’ll embark on a month long heritage journey. An experience I’ve desired to have for years: traveling with my mom to Cambodia. This is significant to me because I will have the opportunity to learn more about her life pre-America, see her story first handed, and build a life long memory with her.
As as I sit here in SFO, waiting at my gate, I ask myself who am i?
Just a son and brother of two Cambodian refugees who fled their country’s genocide to survive. In 1980, they found refuge by a church in Centralia, Washington who had sponsored them to come to America.
Since coming to America, she has been back once (2006). My brother never. I never understood why. My peers, similar like me, have had several trips back to Cambodia. So it always perplexed me why my family is different. I am grateful and feel privilege to have this opportunity. Sadly, my brother won’t be joining us, but I can speculate why.
For the next month, I’ll have the opportunity to visit Hong Kong for seven days, Singapore for six days, and the remaining twenty days in Cambodia. I have never traveled this long before in my life. My first stop will be in LA, where I will transfer to meet my mom. From there, we will travel together to Hong Kong.
I’m not looking forward to the long flight but it will be worth it.
My goal of this blog is to journal my experiences and share my findings during my journey.
