Why Ash Monday? As Maronite’s we celebrate Ash Monday. In the West (Latin Rite), Ash Wednesday signals the beginning of the Lenten season. The Maronite Lenten season begins with the “Entrance into Great Lent” on Cana Sunday. The Maronite Church adopted Ash Monday later, from the Latin Church. Considering that Great Lent starts on Sunday, it would not have made sense for the distribution of the Ashes on Wednesday, which is why it is Ash Monday. Which brings us to another question. Why is Great Lent for Maronite’s more than forty days? The forty days originates from Jesus’s forty days in the wilderness. “Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.” Luke 4:1-2 At first glance it may appear that the Maronite Lenten season is more than forty days. For Maronite’s, the forty days are counted from Cana Sunday until the Thursday of the Mysteries (known as Holy Thursday in the Latin Church). The Sundays during Great Lent are not counted as part of the forty days. Sundays are for the celebration of the Resurrection. So counting from Cana Sunday to the Thursday of the Mysteries and taking out the Sundays, we get forty days. #ashmonday #ashwednesday #bestlentever #lent #fasting #maronitechurch #lent2019 #easternchurch #latinchurch #maronite #maronitechurch #padrelias #catholic #catholicchurch #catholiclent (at St. Matthew Catholic Church) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuYvE3KnkaP/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=3ga9ksoyiu3p

Growing up Catholic, Lent was the somewhat annoying thing that we did once a year when we complained all Friday long about not having any meat; whether we really wanted meat or not.  It was, like most of my childhood memories, about the food.  The Fast.  I don’t recall any additional prayer or almsgiving, I have no memory of any other lifestyle change; Lent was about Friday Fish Fry and What You Gave Up.
In my adult years, as I progressed deeper into my faith and took on the spiritual discipleship of our home, I began to desire the tradition and practice (OK, fine, the rules, I love rules) of this most holy time of year.  My zeal increased and I took my practices a little too far, as I have a tendency to do.
To be honest, I didn’t even recognize that I was doing anything wrong; I was doing it right, I was following the rules, I was maintaining tradition and expectancy.   It wasn’t until my incredibly wise and observant husband pointed out to me that I was creating an idol out of the rules of Lent.
How many times do we find ourselves in this exact spot; trying to do the “right” thing but for the wrong reasons?  Better still, maybe it isn’t that there is anything object in our motivations; perhaps - as it was for me - the intentionality was missing.
We go through childhood “Doing Lent” because Mom or Dad or Grandma said and so we did, but if we don’t have a foundational understanding of what we are doing, why we are doing it, and for Whom - we are depriving ourselves of the Union in Christ that is uniquely felt as we, in our humble human ways, imitate His example.
Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23,24
Lent is more than a few weeks of giving up chocolate that you likely wouldn’t have eaten anyway.  This Holy time is a period of abundant growth.  When we can release what binds us to our earthly existence, we create a space to expand our Union with Christ, and come to recognize Christ in us through the Holy Mysteries.
Lent is not meant to focus on what we have to give up - Great Holy Lent is a time to gratefully receive His boundless and eternal gift!
I am encouraging myself, and anyone else who may be fasting, praying, and giving this year to do so with the spirit of generosity, of abundance, with a whole heart of joyful thanksgiving.
May the peace of God be with you all during this holiest of holy seasons.
