The Best Red Carpet Looks from the 2019 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards
The who’s who of the fashion industry gathered in New York City tonight to celebrate the 2019 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards. The fund was established in 2003 to “help emerging American design talent find continued success in the business of fashion,” the CFDA writes on its website. The prestigious award has previously been won by Kerby-Jean Raymond of Pyer Moss, Laura and Kristopher Brock of Brock Collection and Alexander Wang.
This year’s winner is Christopher John Rogers, who received USD$400,000 and a year-long mentorship from one of the CFDA’s members. In his acceptance speech, Rogers said, “I am so grateful to my parents for giving up so much that allowed me to be here, to my team who, through all the full time jobs and all the leaving early, allow us to make this collection, and thank you to the judges for seeing something in me.”
The runners-up were Danielle Hirsch (the first ever bridalwear designer to be included in the running) and Reese Cooper who were awarded USD$150,000 each as well as a year of mentorship.
As with previous years, there was no shortage of glamorous attendees on site to bring the drama to the red carpet. Ashley Graham showed off her growing baby bump in one of Roger’s designs (The Good Place actress and activist Jameela Jamil also wore one of his designs), whilst Bella Hadid opted for a sleek Alexander Wang catsuit and sister Gigi went muted in a Dion Lee maxi dress. Fellow Victoria’s Secret models Candice Swanepoel and Jasmine Tookes both opted for white on the night with Swanepoel in Jason Wu and Tookes in Lebanese brand Azzi & Osta.

FLESH NEST from Andrew Thomas Huang on Vimeo.
“Flesh Nest” is a nine-part sci-fi video series illustrating a post-apocalyptic digital multiverse imagined by filmmaker / video artist Andrew Thomas Huang.

facebook.com/AndrewThomasHuang/ twitter.com/andrew_t_huang instagram.com/andrewthomashuang/
Video artist and long-time Björk collaborator Andrew Thomas Huang takes us deep into a digital multiverse via this mind-bending collaboration with motion capture technology company Noitom, choreographer Nina McNeely and fashion designer Ashley Eva Brock. Huang offers some insight into his film:
“‘Flesh Nest’ is essentially my sci-fi Fraggle Rock-inspired trash opera. I built this project around the concept of a digital afterlife. While we are often accustomed to seeing the Internet portrayed as vector graphics, data visualization, or other sterile imagery like server rooms, I wanted instead to construct imagery that had the same efficiency, weirdness and mythic vastness as a Hieronymus Bosch painting in which a multiplicity of characters and edifices are building up and crumbling down in the same hellish scrolling tapestry-like space. It was important for me that there is an honesty about the artifice of this universe. Unlike my other VFX-heavy work, this world remains deconstructed for viewers. Actors shot on blue-screen in rubber suits crawl in front of film equipment left in the frame. Motion captured avatars retain the glitches inherent from the imperfections of the capture process. Overall it took about a year to make this world. It was a new technical and stylistic leap for me to employ the use of so much motion capture; and to build a full visual effects world, while having the courage to leave a bit of it messy and untouched. I’m grateful to the collaborators who joined with me to realize this piece in all of its strangeness.”
