ON CAMPUS:

It’s the second-to-last game of the regular season as the Foxes continue to battle for a spot in the Spring Championships. The Eagles may not be the most fearsome opponent they’ve faced, but that doesn’t mean that the Foxes can relax, a fact that Wymack makes clear in their practices.

This is also the Foxes’ last game before Thanksgiving break. While many of the Foxes and Vixens will be staying on campus, some of them will be going their separate ways after the game for the week-long holiday.

On Friday, November 16, the Foxes and the Vixens gather at the court in the afternoon to load themselves and their gear onto buses for the drive to Statesboro, Georgia, the home of the Georgia Southern Eagles, a three and a half hour drive from Palmetto.

As usual, they arrive at their hotel with enough time to spare to let them settle in and mentally prepare for the game ahead. After some downtime in their rooms, they gather for dinner together at the hotel before it’s time for them to head over to the Eagles’ court.

The results of the game against the Eagles will be posted on Friday night and, in order to put it together, there are a few things I need from you:

Due to the size of the roster, there is a chance that not every player will get to play in every game, so if you want your character not to play in the game (for reasons that could be related to being late to practice, poor performance in practice, mouthing off to Wymack/Grant/Claudia, or any other reason you can think of!) please let me know. While you can still let me know if you want your character to get a red card during the game, no one is required to be benched for this game: with our current roster, I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to play everyone!

If there’s anything exceptional you want to take place during the game (fights, red cards, injuries, exceptionally poor play, etc.) please let me know, and I’ll do my best to work it in. This will work on a first-come-first-serve basis, if the game is getting too packed with details, you might have to wait for the next one;

After each game, two players will be selected to answer questions from the press. If you want to volunteer your character for press duty, please message me! This will also be on a first-come-first-serve basis. And if you volunteer for press duty, please only do so if you expect to be able to play out the thread with your partner in a timely fashion.

Here's your reminder to never enroll in Ashford University! :)

Before I get into this tale of complete and utter bullshit, let me tell you some info important to know beforehand. To get into the school, it is required to have a letter of graduation and an official transcript from your high school. My mom presented both of those to the school when she applied, and got in.

Now, my mom is a year into her schooling. Recently, they were withholding her college stipend because they claimed they never recieved her transcript and letter of graduation (which she clearly did). So, mom sent it again. They then claimed they never got it, so she sent it again. Then, they lost it.

Now, they are saying that a letter of graduation is no longer good enough, and she needs to send in her original high school diploma. She cannot get that because, as she explained, she is 51 now and her diploma was lost in the many moves she's made over the years. In addition, she only gets one of those, and the high school she attended no longer exists. So she cannot go back to school, as they dropped her from her new class a week in.

She decided to try to enroll in a different school, but in order to do that, she needs a transcript from Ashford. She now cannot get her transcript because they are saying she owes them over $1000 (which she shouldn't, because if you are kicked or dropped from a class within the first week, you don't owe anything for said class).

The kicker is, she is not the first student this has happened to. In fact, it has happened to many students.

So my advice is, if you wanna go to online college, do not go to Ashford University.

I feel like this should be illegal to do, but so far nothing can be done, and mom probably won't be able to continue college because we are too poor to afford a payment of over $1000 for a transcript. Honestly, as of right now affording food itself is a struggle.

I feel terrible. I would set up a go-fund-me but I doubt that would do well enough to get the money mom needs for a transcript. I'm very upset with the school for doing that to so many students and preventing them from enrolling anywhere else. She's going to be heartbroken because getting her bachelor's is extremely important to her.

If any of you have any advice on steps we could take from here, that would be wonderful. As of now, though, this has been a PSA.

Is Everyone a Russian Agent Now?

In recent years, governments have created armies of online warriors designed to fact-check alleged Russian ‘disinformation.’ Worryingly, these guardians of the truth are often more dangerous than the threat they claim to combat.

Most analysts grounded in reality accept that Russia is not about to invade Ukraine. Still, the breathless speculation to the contrary in much of the Western media this month has had the virtue of concentrating a few minds. Suddenly alert to the seriousness of the situation, a few of the more sensible commentators have come to the conclusion that the West ought perhaps to reconsider its policy towards Ukraine. The result has been an outpouring of bile that brings to light the difficulty of having an intelligent conversation on anything involving Russia.

A case in point is the reaction to an article last week by the RAND Corporation’s Samuel Charap. Writing for Politico, Charap suggested that the United States should help end the war in eastern Ukraine by using its leverage to persuade the Ukrainian government to fulfil its obligations under the 2015 Minsk II agreement, according to which Ukraine is meant to grant “special status” – i.e. political autonomy – to the rebel region of Donbass.

This is hardly a novel proposal. Others have been saying the same thing for several years. But the RAND Corporation, for which Charap works, has long been considered the intellectual heart of the American military industrial complex. This gave his article a certain oomph, being seen in some circles as a betrayal of Ukraine from within the core of the American system.

While some people welcomed Charap’s piece, others were furious. Comparisons with Hitler were soon spreading over the internet. Stephen Blank of the Center for European Policy Analysis – a think tank funded by the likes of Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and the US Department of Defense – penned an article in which he claimed that “Appeasement of Russia would deliver exactly the same outcome as the betrayal of Czechoslovakia at Munich – dishonor and disaster.” “The consequences of following Charap’s advice,” says Blank, would be no less than “the dismantling of the post-Cold War settlement. … The international rules-based order would end.”

Others were not content with mere hyperbole, and sought instead to name and shame the appeasers who had had the temerity to promote Charap’s article. An example was the Ukrainian information warfare outfit Stop Fake which produced a hit piece entitled ‘Are we ready to die for Kyiv? How Twitter is helping to push the West towards surrendering Ukraine.’ In this, Stop Fake denounced journalists who had tweeted links to Charap’s essay, saying that “Kremlin-friendly actors turned it into a mainstream theme.”

Among the “Kremlin-friendly actors,” Stop Fake singled out RT’s Bryan MacDonald, The Independent’s Mary Dejevsky, Meduza’s Kevin Rothrock, Latvian-based Russian journalist Leonid Ragozin, bne Intellinews’s Ben Aris, and the Atlantic Council’s Emma Ashford. One can see why Ukrainian info-warriors might have a beef with someone from RT, and it’s probably fair to say that Dejevsky is relatively fair to Russia as British journalists go. But Stop Fake’s attempts to portray its targets as propagators of “Kremlin metanarratives” is absurd.

Rothrock’s Meduza, for instance, is decidedly hostile to the Russian government. So too is Ragozin, who has often used Twitter to boost the cause of imprisoned activist Alexey Navalny. This, however, didn’t prevent Stop Fake from denouncing him as “just another Kremlin mouthpiece.” And as far as NATO lobby group the Atlantic Council is concerned, to call it “Kremlin-friendly” is like praising cats as “mouse-friendly.” Ridiculous doesn’t begin to describe Stop Fake’s position.

Unfortunately, though, it’s pretty much par for the course for the organization, as for so many others who make up what one might call the “disinformation industry” – that is to say the large and well-funded network of institutions that has sprung up in the past five or six years to supposedly protect democratic societies from the insidious danger of foreign “influence operations.”

Although these institutions purport to be doing valuable work exposing “fake news,” analysis of their output reveals that much of what they produced is decidedly biased. Their own opinions are taken for absolute truth, and anything that disagrees with their interpretation of reality is denounced as “disinformation.” In the process, these organizations spread disinformation of their own.

A report by British academics, for instance, determined that, “The EU’s main task force for fighting Russian disinformation is in danger of becoming a source for disinformation itself, and so of skewing policy decisions in the EU and the UK, as well as distorting public discourse throughout Europe.” The EU’s disinformation outfit, EUvsDisinfo, was guilty of “blatant distortion,” said the report, adding that “the EU is not alone” in this regard.

Indeed, one can find many examples beyond Stop Fake and EUvsDisinfo. The problem is that the disinformation industry does not for the most part consist of independent researchers objectively determining the accuracy of what appears in the media and on the internet. Rather, many of its members are political activists pursuing an extreme agenda and using their power and influence to attempt to silence those who do not agree one hundred percent with them. In this sense, the disinformation industry is quite dangerous. By supporting it, states are elevating entirely unsuitable persons to the position of semi-official guardians of the truth, in the process severely constraining the parameters of public debate.

Take, for instance, the issue of Russia and Ukraine. As the reaction to Charap’s article shows, even people who are far from being “Kremlin-friendly” find themselves being denounced as such if they deviate even slightly from the preferred narrative. This serves to silence voices urging restraint and to block any proposals which offer a peaceful solution to the war in Donbass, on the dubious grounds that any move towards peace is a dissemination of “Kremlin metanarratives.”

Since Donald Trump’s election as US president in 2016, much of the Western world has been in the grip of exaggerated fear of foreign “influence” and “disinformation.” To combat this, governments have empowered zealots who do their utmost to maintain a constant state of international tension. Sadly, as the Ukrainian example shows, the cure is proving to be even worse than the disease.

Open to all, and especially open to those that want to help with the cooking, it’s an opportunity to take a break from the stress of school and the season, and to enjoy camaraderie with their teammates and coaches off the court.

With the Foxes’ last—and potentially most important—game of the regular season coming after the break, Captain Grant Rollins doesn’t want to rest, and doesn’t want the Foxes on campus for break to rest either, scheduling highly-encouraged optional practices for the remaining Foxes during the week.

Before the impeachment trials, Bill Clinton (Clive Owen) had a typical political career for a presidential hopeful. He studied at Georgetown University, University College, Oxford, and Yale Law School, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree and met his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton (Edie Falco). After law school, Clinton earned a seat as state attorney general in Arkansas, where he would go on to be governor for two nonconsecutive terms (1979-1981 and 1983-1992). He was elected as the President of the United States in 1992, taking the position back for the Democratic Party from Republican incumbent, George H.W Bush. Despite the scandal, he served two terms as president, until he was succeeded by Republican George W. Bush in 2001. Here’s the rest of the story behind the scandal.

Paula Jones (Annaleigh Ashford) worked as an Arkansas state clerk while Bill Clinton was serving as governor. Jones claimed that, while the two were attending the 1991 Annual Governor’s Quality Conference at the Excelsior Hotel in Little Rock, an Arkansas State Police Trooper told her she was required to report to Governor Clinton’s hotel room. Once there, Jones says Clinton propositioned her for sex and exposed himself to her. It took Jones until 1994 to finally tell her story, and on May 6, 1994, Jones filed a lawsuit against Clinton for sexual harassment requesting $750,000 in damages. Clinton tried to argue that he should be immune from civil lawsuits during his presidency but was ultimately denied this defense, allowing the Jones suit to continue. It is this lawsuit that would cause the chain of events that led to President Clinton’s impeachment.

A year later, a young Monica Lewinsky (who is also serving as an Impeachment producer), began working at the White House Office of Legislative Affairs as an intern. Only two days into her job at the White House, an affair began between Lewinsky and President Clinton. Though Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein) left the White House for the Pentagon in 1996, the affair continued until May 1997. A close confidante of Lewinsky’s, Linda Tripp (Sarah Paulson), began to record their conversations after Lewinsky mentioned her affair to Tripp. Tripp also claimed to have witnessed Kathleen Wiley, a White House volunteer aide, leaving the Oval Office looking disheveled and with smeared lipstick. After Tripp turned over her tapes, Lewinsky was pulled as a witness in the Paula Jones trial. At Clinton’s urging, Lewsinky denied the allegations; in a 1998 deposition, Clinton also denied it, famously saying, “I did not have sexual relations with that woman.“

During the Jones and Lewinsky incidents, Clinton was already being investigated for his part in the Whitewater Controversy, which surrounded real estate investments during his time as the Arkansas governor. The investigation was spearheaded by Independent Counsel Ken Starr for the House Judiciary Committee. By 1998, Starr released a U.S federal government report titled the Starr Report, which detailed his findings on President Clinton. The Starr Report listed 11 possible reasons for Clinton’s impeachment, including perjury, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice, as well as outlining the Clinton-Lewinsky affair.

Spending a total of $70 million and taking four years, Starr left no rock unturned during his investigations; using the Tripp recordings, testimony from the Jones case, Clinton’s deposition, and DNA evidence from one of Monica Lewinsky’s dresses to compile a 453-page report. When the document was released online it was read by 20 million people at least once, making the report one of the most accessed on the internet. The Starr Report was initially met with skepticism and disapproval, as many felt Starr had overstepped the permissions of his investigation and failed to provide solid evidence for his claims. Starr even made a partial retraction on his stance on impeachment in 2020 while testifying as a defense lawyer during then-president Donald Trump’s first impeachment, claiming he was wrong in attempting to impeach Clinton on the basis of abuse of power.

The United States House of Representatives voted to open a broad impeachment inquiry on President Clinton on October 8, 1998, with a vote of 258-176. Because Starr had just finished an extensive investigation, the House Judiciary Committee decided to forego any more serious investigations and hearings ahead of the impeachment. Though Clinton was urged by many to resign ahead of impeachment, he refused, while then-First Lady Hillary Clinton stood beside him and his supporters called out the hypocrisy of those attempting to impeach him for adultery during a time when multiple Republican Congress members had their own adulteries uncovered.

On December 11, 1998, the House Judiciary Committee brought Clinton forward on articles of impeachment; grand jury perjury, obstruction of justice, and perjury regarding the Paula Jones case. On December 12, they voted to add abuse of power to bring the total to four articles of impeachment. On December 19, after a delay caused by bombings in Iraq, Clinton was impeached by the House of Representatives for grand jury perjury and obstruction of justice, with the other two articles being rejected. The Senate trial began on January 7, 1999, and the weeks that followed would be filled with presentations of the facts, debates on Clinton’s capability to lead the country, and hours of video witness testimony — 30 video testimonies came from Monica Lewinsky alone. Deliberations stretched until February 12, when the Senate announced they’d voted to acquit President Clinton on both charges, allowing him to stay in office.

Though he was acquitted in the Senate, it doesn’t mean Bill Clinton avoided repercussions for his actions. For failing to testify truthfully in the Paula Jones trial, Clinton was cited for civil contempt of court. The day before he left office, Clinton agreed to pay a $25,000 fine and surrender his Arkansas law license to put an end to the investigation. Clinton and Jones settled the sexual harassment case out of court after the case was dismissed, with Clinton awarding Jones $850,000 for damages caused. Though his approval ratings actually increased during the Lewinsky scandal and his impeachment, the nation’s confidence in his honesty and moral character decreased; enough to still partially reflect negatively on Hillary Clinton during her own presidential campaigns.

Clinton might have escaped criminal impeachment charges, but his name would forever be tied to the incident; even 20 years later, debates over Clinton’s actions continue to grace primetime news. He has been the butt of many jokes in movies and late-night comedy specials, parodied by Saturday Night Live, and joined the growing list of presidents featured on The Simpsons. Monica Lewinsky’s name is also irreversibly tied to the scandal. Despite attempting to make the best of her notoriety through book deals and TV appearances, Lewinsky found she couldn’t live a normal life in America. She moved to the UK in 2005, staying out of the public eye for almost 10 years and during that time earning a Master of Science degree. After reemerging in 2014, Lewinsky has dedicated herself to activism, focusing on issues surrounding cyberbullying and public shaming. Still, American Crime Story: Impeachment brought up memories; Lewinsky shared that she required a therapist to ease her through her first viewing of the 10-episode series.
