I think something we're sleeping on in the Gale epilogue is that he says he wants to try writing books about our adventures, which directly puts him in competition with Volo, who is also writing about the same adventures
This would--inevitably--devolve into a writer/academic feud for the ages, spreading copious misinformation to the masses as both writers can accurately claim to be primary sources, with wildly different tellings between them. There will be synthesis commentary papers written about both of their works by historians for centuries, and even though Volo's is full of blatant lies it must be considered because he is....well, Volo. and, like, he was verifiably there and involved with everything. there is no world where that is not infuriating to an academic like Gale. Gale will be blowing a gasket for the rest of his life about being in competition with Volo's Tome of Lies. There will be sniping in the footnotes of all his papers at the bard for the rest of his life. Bitter bard vs academic warfare, that's what we're looking at here
#there was this paper I had to read in my undergrad research methodologies course#and it had a footnote that was--i shit you not--a full two pages long of the dude being pissed at structuralist interpretations of the topi#and that's what I imagine gale will be writing in his papers#like a full two page footnote of bitching about volo#glorious academic nonsense it makes me so happy#no one:#me: what about the academic implications of gale and volos wildly divergent tellings of the events of the mind flayer invasion of 1492 DR?#baldur's gate 3

Me telling a story that happened in a different language: okay, now this next bit is really funny but doesn’t translate well, so let’s take a brief interlude for me to explain to you the sociocultural context behind this idiom. Just give me five minutes and you’ll be laughing, I swear.
Narrator: they did not, in fact, laugh.
#linguistics#bilingual problems#multilingualism#multilingual problems#look I took an interpreting course once and a couple of translation-adjacent classes during my undergrad#but none of them included being funny#I’m told that my comedy has a very… niche audience even in my L1 with no language barrier or translation involved so what can I say?

h-how do you ever finish any of your work? genuine question because you seem to be productive despite your agreste syndrome and I need to learn your ways. but also how do you ever finish any of your work
unclear. last night i stayed up and finished a report worth 25% of my grade at about 5am, arrived on time for my 9am lecture, and spent about half of it zoned out while thinking about seventeen year old emilie agreste. and i was one of the most active participants in the class discussion
#in some ways it IS the move to go to grad school right out of undergrad#because your body can still sort of operate like a college kid#i’m on about 3ish hours of sleep rn and this morning it felt SO over but now i’ve eaten something and we’re so back#i also don’t really do caffeine. except sometimes i’ll go get one of those panera death lemonades#i might be able to snag a short nap before work#but anyway about seventeen year old emilie. i was thinking abt how she was in that movie solitude and adrien said she was seventeen#WAIT. NO. HE SAID SHE WAS SEVENTEEN IN THAT PHOTO ON HIS DESKTOP NOT IN THE MOVIE#well. okay whatever i’m gonna tell you what i was thinking about anyway#OKAY i’m back i just checked the wikipedia page and then i watched the end of gorizilla. to make sure i’m not lying. because i’m normal.#anyway i was thinking about the solitude film and how it’s super rare and old and obscure and whatever. and how apparently#emilie wrote it herself and andre produced it#and i’m thinking about how gabe was discovered by audrey and that’s how he got his start in the fashion industry#so now i’m like?? did gabe and emilie first meet on the set of solitude? because gabe was designing costumes or whatever?#and that’s how audrey found him? have people already thought about this??#also i just checked and it doesn’t say emilie’s last name in the credits and also it’s ‘graham films’ with the twin rings logo m#so i’m assuming she’s still emilie graham de vanily at that point#anyway it comes back to seventeen year old emilie because i started imagining seventeen year old runaway emilie having her new life in pari#after escaping her british nobility life#and the first thing she does is write and star in an original movie. of course.#and she meets this repressed bisexual punk upstart costume designer who is so the opposite of everyone she’s ever known#and he’s immediately so unhealthily obsessed with her. which she appreciates.#and then they proceed to have the most toxic doomed evil relationship of all time#also she gets cheated because once gabe gets money he represses himself SO hard that he is now exactly like all the people emilie grew up w#but at least he’s still obsessed with her#this is what i was thinking about during class today. i don’t know how i get anything done either.#ml#anna rambles#asks

The scene unfolds like nearly every other scene in Outline: Someone talks, Faye listens. The latter, a divorced novelist of few biographical details, serves as a kind of Grecian urn into which her conversation partners eagerly pour the metaphors that rule their lives, delivering reflections on art, marriage, and family in the same tone of Spartan clarity.
#new andrea long chu review!#had to read the first outline novel for the disappointing course in cont lit i took in undergrad.#& parade sounds. insufferable.#readings

every time I remember I'll never be a student again
#a couple of people from my undergrad course have stayed on at our uni for phds and i follow their study accounts#and it makes me feel a little bit sick every time i see their posts#what do you mean they're planning on a library session and some reading tomorrow#whilst i spend every day being an employee at a stupid pointless job#i try to remind myself that i get free time without deadlines and grades but honestly it does not work#don't get me wrong i'd hate to live in halls again (like one of them does) but i want my life to revolve around studying again!!!!!#talking

realising how fucking messed up the canon timeline for how much college sam actually did is
#dean says two years in the pilot but his & brady's relationship got messed up in sophomore year#there's also the implication that he and jess had been dating for a while if sam was planning on proposing & they lived together#plus he'd talen the lsat and applied for law (grad) schools already??? at a 4 year uni???? meaning he had to also he done with undergrad#(4 year course‚ so he at LEAST needed 3 yrs to complete all those credits. & w a super good transcript if he was getting into stanford law)#sam winchester#&

where did you go to school and what did you study?
i went to nyu gallatin and concentrated in essentially literature and polysci/sociology but almost all of my classes were interdisciplinary seminars so i was out there taking shit like “philosophy of religion” and “domesticating the wild in children’s literature”…… literally greatest most stimulating four years of my life (academically) and i would pay a million dollars to have access to my course essays again. my concentration colloquium i ended up titling “loaded language: domination & dissent through the written word” and everytime i think about it im like woah i really tapped into something that i would only get more interested in and also goddamn i need to get an advanced degree and also yeah every stereotype about gallatin students is true lol
#writing this out was insufferable but i cannot imagine i more incredible or enriching path for undergrad and i will always always be so#outlandishly grateful for every single moment even if i can’t remember 75% of them and outside the classroom it was hell#would retake every course but two in a heartbeat#my post colonial feminism class with the scariest smartest woman i’ve ever met who put our asses through the RINGER……#i have literally NONE of my papers bc my email got deactivated and i have a breakdown about that once every eighteen months#like hundreds of pages just gone. oh also bc i spilled coffee on my laptop and didn’t have an external hard drive

advice for people in uni: don’t be scared to drop classes and drop them as early as possible. if you read the syllabus and it’s a nightmare or if you show up to lecture number one and the lecturer has bad vibes. literally drop that shit. don’t even worry about it
#I got into honours with a great gpa by dropping. a lot of courses#anything that felt doomed in my undergrad…. bye bye#literally drop that shit

I used to be consistently embarrassed by anything I made/wrote but now I can reread my fic like ‘oh this is alright actually’ and I like looking at the photos I’ve taken and I like rereading some of my academic writing and yeah maybe it’s not amazing but I can recognise that it is good and I have improved at various things. Which is nice.
#have been working on my self confidence for yearrrrrrrs#and feel like I have grown so much as a person#first undergrad like. destroyed my self confidence and made me super anxious#whereas studying hort everything is just so much better#partly cos of the subject but also I’ve met so many wise lovely kind caring helpful supportive people#and they have helped me to feel more confident in myself#I’ve learned as much from the people I’ve been studying with and working with as I have from the actual course material#but also gardening is so chill but requires courage to just do stuff. like yeah chop that plant right back. and sure enough it grows back#better the year after. so gardening has pushed me to have more faith in my own abilities

what people expect when you sign up for an LIS degree: haha quirky book nerds, so fun, I remember toddler storytime at the library are you gonna read to children
what they actually get when you sign up for an LIS degree: smashing Alexa isn't enough anymore I need to learn how to run my own internet and also build a house on a totally closed circuit system.
#this isn't totally fair. you also become even MORE of a curmudgeon about attribution and misinformation than you were before!#anyway everyday I realize i am becoming even more of a nightmare of a person#as if my media degree wasn't bad enough#I did have to think today about how my courses in undergrad went like#digital privacy and surveillance > social networks as used in the arab spring > culture of money > political campaign communications#now here i am doing in depth coursework on metadata and info behavior#DISASTROUS. no one should talk to me. absolutely nightmarish.#megs vs mlis#this is mostly a joke but it is so funny to read about metadata nearly a decade after that digital surveillance/privacy course and. oof.#okay I'm going back to my readings even though the memes are more fun

today's spooky poem is neil gaiman's "vampire sestina", featured in the collection "smoke and mirrors". as any poet will tell you, a sestina is a fiendishly tricky beast, so i'm always impressed when i find a good one - and this is, i think, a good one! you can read a little more about sestinas here, and if you've got some free time on your hands, you might try your hand at writing your own. (well, why not?)
VAMPIRE SESTINA
I wait here at the boundaries of dream, All shadow-wrapped. The dark air tastes of night, So cold and crisp, and I wait for my love. The moon has bleached the color from her stone. She'll come, and then we'll stalk this pretty world Alive to darkness and the tang of blood.
It is a lonely game, the quest for blood. But still, a body's got the right to dream And I'd not give it up for all the world. The moon has leeched the darkness from the night. I stand in the shadows, staring at her stone: Undead, my lover... O, undead my love?
I dreamt you while I slept today and love Meant more to me than life - meant more than blood. The sunlight sought me, deep beneath my stone, More dead than my corpse but still a-dream Until I woke as vapor into the night And sunset forced me out into the world.
For many centuries I've walked the world Dispensing something that resembled love - A stolen kiss, then back into the night Contented by the life and by the blood. And come the morning I was just a dream, Cold body chilling underneath a stone.
I said I would not hurt you. Am I stone To leave you prey to time and to the world? I offered you a truth beyond your dreams While all you had to offer was your love. I told you not to worry and that blood Tastes sweeter on the wing and late at night.
Sometimes my lovers rise to walk the night... Sometimes they lie, cold corpse beneath the stone, And never know the joys of bed and blood, Of walking through the shadows of the world; Instead they rot to maggots. O my love They whispered you had risen, in my dream.
I've waited by your stone for half the night But you won't leave your dream to hunt for blood. Good night, my love. I offered you the world.
—Neil Gaiman
#october poems#fun fact when i was in undergrad we had a tutor who HATED sestinas. hated em.#one of his big rules when he handed out poetry assignments was NO SESTINAS#which is of course the best way to ensure that every student in your class will at some point write you a sestina#never underestimate the bloody-mindedness of english literature students
