7. With the Blue Sage you can either burn it around the bag/pouch OR burn a little to ash and add it to your bag/pouch

((Ritual Creepypasta: Summoning Von Kaiser))
((I’m a big fan of the Punch Out series, much like everyone else. One day I wanted to summon Von Kaiser so I learned how to summon Von Kaiser and now you, <insert name here>, can summon Von Kaiser with these simple tips.))
You will need:
Sausage (NOT THE CHEAP CRAP FROM ALDI. Do not use vegetarian or vegan subsitutes; otherwise Von Kaiser will drag your soul back to his realm (Germany))
A moustache (If you can’t grow your own, store bought is fine)
A mirror
Salt for protection (You can use that weird pink Himalayan salt, but you’ll probably make your mom mad)
Rope
Follow these steps:
Sprinkle the salt in a circle on the floor around you. This will protect you if Kaiser becomes enraged.
Place the moustache and sausage outside of the circle
Look into your mirror and do one of the following:
Chant three bad puns in succession.
Say, “I forgot how to tie my shoes” three times.
Scream for a solid minute.
Von Kaiser will appear in the mirror and ask what you want. DO NOT MAKE YOUR REQUEST. You must first offer the sausage and moustache. If he accepts your offering, they will turn to ash.
Make your request, but only ask once. Maintain a deferential tone, or Kaiser will give you a stern dad look.
Follow these steps EXACTLY. If you sleep through the night without incident, that’s a sign that Von Kaiser has granted your request.
WARNING:
If you stray from these instructions in any way, you might die or something. More likely Von Kaiser will just scold you for being sloppy.
While performing the ritual, some have reported the following phenomena:
Warm laughter
Cups filling with quality bourbon
Unexpected hair growth
Bloody messages on the walls
Polished boots
Packed lunches

i dont work with herbs. witches ive talked to in the past have asked how i perform spells and such due to this. i actually dont do magick that requires herb subsitutes often, occasionally i will do jar magick but its mostly with glitter or dirt. but if i needed to do a spell with herbs, i just replace them with paper. because my practice revolves around my self, my energy from within me, the herbs are just a tool to control the power i am trying to harness. instead, i take paper and i write what i need on the paper. in short, the correspondences for herbs i would be using. then, i burn the slips of paper and use the ashes in my jar or satchel or whatever i'm trying to do. does it work? yes. for me, this method is just as powerful as any other witch who uses herbs. i enjoy the use of fire in my practice and this is a fantastic way to incorporate it. of course this isnt for an edible spell, but i dont do edible spells. i'm sure that you can do the same thing for some form of food. i also use writing on biodegradible stuff i plan to bury. fruit peels specifically. rot is another thing i enjoy using, but of course that isnt for everyone. do you use the tools at your disposal differently than others? i'd love to hear about it!

This does not negate the show’s interesting approach to said mutliple mother figures: they are reflecting Michael’s splintered sense of self, along a divide that does not follow the expected logic/emotions dichotomy. Amanda would mirror her ruthlessly caring side, Mirrogiou her darker, more rebellious side, her biological mother probably her scientific curiosity and Georgiou perhaps her humanism (serioulsy, give us more Prime Georgiou). But why not allocate more time to those different relationships then? Even a flashback here and there to show rather than tell about those bonds and how varied and nuanced they were. One could argue trauma prevents such trips down memory lane for Michael in the case of Prime Georgiou and her biological mother, but Michael’s heart-to-hearts with Amanda have been also clouded by Spock and the ones with Mirrorgiou have been a tortuous game of chicken and mouse. If the show’s prime theme is that at some point one has to stop looking for subsitutes of absent figures because relationships are more complex and fluid than what schemas elaborated in childhood taught us, then, yes, it is making a compelling case. But it does not excuse the paucity of varied female friendships for Michael.
This is not to be read as questioning the narrative’s need to explore Michael and her family (it does a great job at that too), but its need to mark out Michael’s on-screen relationships with women in a very distinctive way. Outside of Tilly, Michael doesn’t have any long-lasting relationship with women (yes, we can extrapolate her bond with Keyla, Joann and Airiam from the few words they’ve exchanged since the beginning of the season, but it’s more fanon territory than canon); the doors opened to possible, unexplored dynamics like with Landry or Reno were closed quickly enough, and despite my intense satisfaction with the conversation between Nhan and Michael last episode, I am not really expecting the show to go along with it. I love the Klingon storyline as much as the next plane tree, but L’Rell would have provided Michael with an interesting sparring partner. In the meantime, Michael gets to have varied relationships and dynamics with Pike, Lorca, Ash, Saru, Stamets, Spock and Sarek, only one of them being a canon father figure to her.
One could argue that Cornwell gets to be that female character, being an older superior officer who found herself embroiled in deeply personal situations with Michael (helping Ash on the Ship of the Dead and being rescued, dealing with Philippa’s evil ghost), but she doesn’t have a specific personal relationship with Michael, it’s mostly by extension. In the end, it means that most of Michael’s close relationships with women in the show are defined as familial, in a professional environment, in the context of a story that explores the protagonist’s bonds with many different people. Much like Strange Empire and Humans (please watch those gems), DSC places motherhood at the center of its narrative, but unlike them it seems to chicken out of investing in other platonic bonds (Tilly and Michael’s relationship aside, and even that seems one-sided), as if again women didn’t navigate a complex and vast network of connections within a group of women in every aspect of our life.
Honestly, the more mothers this show gives Michael the more unnecessary it makes the writing of Philippa as a mother figure and the more I suspect that the show has little understanding of (or interest in exploring) the vastness of female platonic relationships in general.
I call that the “gynaeceum” syndrome: it’s the belief that a relationship between two women has to fall into a familial definition to exist. Men in fiction can have unbreakable and intense bonds that are defined by mentorship, comradery, even a sense of duty; women in fiction can’t quite have that yet. If they are the same age, they will be BFF who are like sisters and if they are not they will be like mothers and daughters.
And, no, it’s not about shipping. It’s about an overlap between lack of female characters, gendered stories and fandom practices. Captain & Second, with a mentor/mentee twist, was already a fascinating dynamic that I was excited to see applied to a duo of women before starting the show, but no, can’t have that.
I remember vividly loving adventure stories as a child and dreaming that all those brothers in arms and pirates and detectives were women, and how cool it would be to see women have these types of friendship. They exist, but I wish they were as common as they are for male characters and that female characters didn’t have to justify their existence to one another as much as they do. I want much more diversity for women in fiction; we are getting there but some changes seem so incremental…
Queering your female relationships shouldn’t be the only way to step out the gynaeceum.
#star trek discovery#discovery spoilers#ramblings#michael burnham#women in media#Sunday ramblings#the clarification was needed#it's not ''UGH why such a focus on family''#it's '' UGH why the lack of variety''#Humans is one of my favourite sci-fi shows and its exploration of motherhood is stunning#and Strange Empire was A TRAGEDY#one could talk about Dark Matter here too because it did some really interesting stuff with found families and motherhood#but DSC is really confusing on that front#not that most shows are not underwhelming on that front but Disco is straight up confusing#I would point out that the few J-dramas I have seen (and the one K-drama) are intensely satisfying on that front
