This is one of the reasons I like ace Jane Rizzoli. No way anyone could accuse her of being cold and emotionless. She seems furiously disinterested in romantic relationships. (Actually she seems more bewildered, but she knows a good Catholic woman needs a man.)
I wish I liked aro and/or ace fanfictions, but most of the ones I found are just... not written naturally. So many of them make the cold, emotionless character be the aro/ace one, and they'll inevitably have a scene that goes "Tabitha, you know that as an aromatic and/or asexual, I do not have attraction towards other people. However I desire a relationship for social connection." Why must it sound so clinical each time? The character doesn't talk like that in canon???

failed by design, slow your pace down to mine (rizzoli & isles)
jane convinces maura to take a nap with her.
(involving black scrubs, a pull-out couch, coffee, and a betting pool.)

note: this fic was written for a writing challenge hosted by a fun fanfic/podfic server, audiofrickbooks. the prompt was “destiny” and i had to write it between 200-1,000 words. join here if you want: https://discord.gg/jufpfE5vwx i hope you enjoy!

“Hey Maur.” The voice of her favourite detective reached Dr. Maura Isles’ ears as she typed away at a lab report.
The physician looked up, seeing the dark-haired woman looking ragged and worn-out. “I have no new information. What can I do for you, Jane?”
“D’you have a blanket?” The lanky detective fell heavily into the nearest chair.
She blinked, closing her laptop and standing. “I can neither confirm nor deny presently.”
“Just— yes or no.”
“I have a few throws. Why, what do you need it for?”
“To hang myself with.”
Maura’s head snapped toward the older woman, only to find her rolling her eyes. “To nap with. I’m no good to anyone this tired and driving home would eat up too much time. Got anything?”
“I’ll do you one step ahead. This couch pulls out.”
“It’s ‘do you one better’. Thanks, I don’t mean to impose.”
The blonde grabbed a thin but warm blanket and ushered the exhausted woman onto the quasi-bed. “You’re always welcome, Detective. I’m just glad that you’re listening to your body for once and resting.” She made to return to her desk, but was stopped by a hand clamping her forearm.
“Jane, is something wrong?”
“Need cuddle buddy.”
“No, Jane, I need to finish my report.” But the longer she looked at the sleepy detective, the more she was tempted to lie down next to her. So she tried a different tactic. “I smell like the morgue and I’m in my scrubs.”
The Italian woman said nothing, just made grabby motions with her hands.
“Oh, all right. Move over, you’re hogging the blanket.”
—
Knocking quickly on the open door, Senior Criminalist Susie Chang walked into the finely decorated office. “Dr. Isles? Lab res— oh.” Her eyes fell on the sleeping women, chests rising and falling in tandem.
Susie shook her head, pulling out her phone and taking a photo. Maura nuzzled deeper into Jane’s chest at the sound of the click. “This will make a good anniversary present…”
She looked at the quiet pair again, smiling gently. She rarely saw the soft side of her boss, but if anyone could bring it out of her, it was the brash detective. “Sleep tight, ladies.”
—
“Hey, Susie. Seen Jane anywhere?” Sergeant Korsak and Detective Frost poked their heads into the crime lab, the elder of the pair knocking lightly on the glass.
“She’s napping with Dr. Isles in her office. Judging from the dark circles under her eyes, or as Dr. Isles would say, periorbital hyperpigmentation, Detective Rizzoli will be resting for quite a while.”
“Okay, thanks Susie. We’re just going to check on them, and then we’ll let ‘em sleep.”
“They should be fine, I saw them about 10 minutes ago when I was going to give Dr. Isles some test results. They looked so peaceful, I couldn’t wake them up.”
Frost nodded. “We trust you. But damn, we’ve had a lot of shit go down here… better safe than sorry. I swear that loading bay in the good doc’s morgue area is a serious security breach.”
“We’ll leave you to your analysing.” Korsak dipped his head as both men walked towards the ME’s office, hands poised above grips.
Turning the knob silently, the Sergeant looked around in alarm at the empty desk. The Chief Medical Examiner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts was quiet, but not this quiet.
They looked down and saw Maura’s heels, neatly standing up on their own, right next to each other. Around the heels were Jane’s combat boots, haphazardly thrown and lying in whatever direction they pleased.
That was when they heard the stilly purring of the youngest-promoted detective in the department. Wrapped in her arms, the resident ME.
“She smilin’?”
“You bet.”
“I need a photo.” Barry fumbled with his phone, snapping some photos and a video. “Need some blackmail.”
“I’ve gotta black male standing right next to me.”
“Oh ha, ha.” The young man shot his partner a scathing glare, returning his phone to his pocket as he punched Korsak in the upper arm.
Vince rolled his eyes and chuckled lowly. They died down quickly as he gazed at the two women before him. His heart tugged as he watched them reach for each other in their sleep. He loved Jane and Maura like his own; he’d watched his young partner flounder unhappily after Hoyt, slogging through the days and going home alone. He thanked his lucky stars that Maura had crossed paths with Jane in the Division One Cafe.
Silently nodding at each other, the men backed out of the office, turning out the lights and shutting the door gently behind them. They walked back to the elevator in silence, only speaking once the doors closed and the car was moving.
“Do you think they know that they’re meant for each other?”
“I don’t think Doc believes in fate or destiny or anything not-very-scientific, but I believe she would say they make a compatible pairing.”
Frost looked at him and smirked. “How would you know, old man?”
“Asked her about it once last week, and she went off like a shot. I felt bad for interrupting her, but I really needed to get back upstairs.” Korsak shrugged and scratched his beard. “It was good timing, too. Right after she stopped talking, I could hear Jane clomping down the hall.”
The doors slid open and Frost led the way.
“What a pair, huh?”
Vince nodded, pouring himself a cup of coffee. “D’you think it’s too late to start a betting pool?”
The taller man shrugged. “Don’t think so. Put me down for fifty bucks. I say they get together during the holidays. I’ll be in BRIC.”
Vince Korsak hummed to himself as he sat down at his desk. Frankie must have made the coffee today, it didn’t taste like dirty socks. He chuckled again, thinking of the slumbering women in each other’s arms. “What a pair.”

oh god okay a few things
- angie harmon is an annoying straight republican, and while she acts like jane in the beginning of the show she slowly stops acting and just…is herself. which is shit. ma’am obviously never heard that actors are separate from their characters. she’s constantly made problematic statements regarding rizzisles and assumes stuff said about jane is meant for her. actors are not their characters, angie.
- this is one of the reasons r&i is good for the first 2 seasons, and then the other 5 are allegedly terrible (according to longtime fans).
- the ending is ass.
- jane is….a bit of a jerk without any redeeming qualities sometimes?? the writers chose to write her like that for some reason. i hate this show.
- jane is not canonically queer, but i think she’s an asexual lesbian because reasons.
- this show could have had such potential, but homophobia.
- the only reason why i like this show because of maura isles, jane & maura’s relationship, and the fact that jane rizzoli is a lot like me.
- that being said, this show truly did nail the police procedural format. it feels organic and realistic, and the themes of found family and love are true and tender. i could rewatch this many times. i just make up my own endings and pay attention to the gay shit and forget the rest.
- if you do decide to watch, feel free to dm me and live react to the show or whatevs
- i hope you love dr maura dorthea isles as much as i do, and good luck bestie
left handed culture is finding a character written in such a way that their perception of & relationship to queerness is symbolically, but rather unwittingly, paralleled by their left handedness
and then immediately latching onto that character
ok this gets to skip the queue and i made a handy diagram to explain why:
don't withhold such important information from us! /lh

Rules: Choose 10 different fandoms and pinpoint your favorite character from each one. Then tag 10 more.
So, as usual, I wasn’t tagged but saw it on my dash by @citrus-cactus. It’s a good opportunity to sort trough my fandoms and get an overview.
1.Digimon:Tai. I don’t want to copy you on this one but it’s true. Since I first laid my eyes on him at the tender age of three or four he’s been my favourite. With all his flaws (like rather using his fists than words to solve a problem) and his carefree nature he’s just precious. Seeing him growing up and getting a conscience in Tri was first a little bewildering but he’s kept his awkwardness every once in a while so I’m fine with his development.
2. Glee: Kurt Hummel. This is a hard one, though. But Kurt’s sass is unrivalled and his story arc is one of the best in the whole show, if not the whole tv landscape at that time. Add in the fact that this role was solely created for Chris Colfer and you have a unique character you can hardly not love. Santana and Finn both share second place.
3. Harry Potter. Charlie Weasley. One character who was treated so poorly in both the books and the movies although he didn’t deserve it. Curiously enough, he’s probably one of the first asexual characters in a big franchise (I might be wrong on this one, sorry) and I should be glad about it. However, I’ve written a fanfiction where he isn’t. Anyway, I would have liked to see more of him. (I think of the fancast Charlie Hunnam when I imagine him.)
4. Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries: Dorothee Williams. When it comes to excellent character development, you cannot pass Dot Williams. She goes from terrified housemaid to self-confident detective’s assistant in only two seasons and even affronts her to-be husband in a time when women usually didn’t do that, the 1920′s. Additionally, she is a beautiful plus-size lady.
5. The Hobbit: Thorin Oakenshield. The one character to satisfy my attraction of hunky, long-bearded men. When looking past that handsome outside, you find a lonsesome, love and revenge seeking person who you just want to cuddle with.
6. Ripper Street. Det. Edmund Reid. This favourite is more based on my fondness for the actor Matthew Macfadyen, because, alas, I’m way behind on watching the show. But what I can recall is that Reid is a good detective and well-developed character. I just don’t remember why...
7. Rizzoli & Isles: Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles. I know that this is not one character but two. However, it feels that you get these two only as twin pack. They bring the best of each other out without being codependent. Also, I really can’t choose one over the other.
8. That 70′s Show. Steven Hyde. Another sass king with a hard shell and a soft core. And one of those characters where I highly disagree with whom he ended up with. I ship him with Donna, but hey, that’s just my opinion.
9. Twilight. Evelyn Hewett - nah, just kidding. I keep my OCs out of this. Bella Cullen. This is probably a rather unpopular opinion but because the story is told out of her perspective you can’t help but grow a little atttached to her and it also makes it so easy to write her. And I think that she’s the one who suits vampirism the best.
10. Zamonia. Urs of the Snows. He is just so pure. An excellent cook and a more excellent friend. But beware! Still waters run deep. When it i’s do or die, he’s the best swordman you can find.
So, I don’t tag anyone, that was more for me than to force anybody. But, of course, feel free to do it!

A Pair of Hearts
read it on the AO3 at http://ift.tt/2GdGVVy
by sockslost
This story explores a world where Maura helps Jane come to the conclusion that she is asexual. And later how Jane and Maura navigate and build a relationship through that focal point. I would categorize this as ‘Serious Fluff’ – soft, romantic moments with a serious undertone. Not full of drama or angst.
Note: It’s a little non-canonical – I’ve ignored some things from the later seasons or twisted them around for my purposes.
Words: 1542, Chapters: 1/?, Language: English
Fandoms: Rizzoli & Isles
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Categories: F/F
Characters: Jane Rizzoli, Maura Isles
Relationships: Maura Isles/Jane Rizzoli
Additional Tags: Asexual Character, Asexuality, soft, third person but basically from Jane's POV
