@shadowtearling’s August Selfie Challenge - Day 3 - Favorite Book

I adore Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere. I have a couple different editions, but this is the most recent that I added to my collection—part of a series of vintage Gaiman covers illustrated by Robert McGinnis. Neverwhere was the first novel I read by Neil Gaiman, and now I have a huge collection of his books—it takes up an entire one of my bookshelves—and he is one of my all-time favorite authors. 

There are many things I love about Neverwhere, but here are just two. First, it has one of the most impactful scary scenes I’ve ever read—as they cross the bridge to go to the market, and the darkness comes alive. Second, I think it does the “hapless character dragged into a fantasy” better than any book I’ve read. In most of those stories, the character suddenly becomes brave, the chosen one, the hero of this world. Richard isn’t like that. He’s terrified. He’s confused. He kind of just wants to go home. The reason he gets dragged into this is because he stops to help a girl who is bleeding on the street. An act of normal human kindness drags him into an underworld he doesn’t want to be part of, and it is that ordinary, frightened, realistic kind of heroism that Richard embodies.

August Selfie Challenge Day 3- Fave Book I know it's not a selfie, but I couldn't fit myself into the summoning circle. Not sure what I'll get, but that's part of the surprise. Name of the Wind is my favorite book. It's prose is a song and and it's story is beautiful. I know I never stop talking about it, but it really is one of the books closest to my heart. If I had to pick a book that would define me this would be it.

I turned 21 yesterday and the coolest present I got was these dragon eggs which my Aunty HANDMADE, she did the box as well.

Anyway, I'm off to take over the Seven Kingdoms and resume my rightful place on the Iron Throne 🐉🐉🐉

Today's August Selfie Challenge! The prompt is Favorite, and since I'm separated from about half of my books at the moment I have to be basic and go with Harry Potter. It isn't inaccurate but I could have picked others. Just saying. Plus this is the illustrated version so I 💜 it so much

August Selfie Challenge — Day 16: TOP 3

Uprooted by Naomi Novik — This is a really important book for me because it was my companion during a time of so much personal hardship. I was in one of those really hopeless states, felt at my lowest, and generally didn’t feel well. But I read this book, and after finishing, I just got that warm feeling in my tummy. I felt my hope come back, and I just felt better about the world and my role in it. It’s a lot to put on a book, but I’m so glad I had it with me at my time of need.

The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen — How can I talk about Top 3 without mentioning this one? Truthfully, this is The Book that got me here on Booklr and really began my love for fantasy. Kelsea is a character I relate to so very deeply, and I admire her as well.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak — The Icon™ of Booklr. I think this is the book that helped me realize just how much I love and value reading not just for myself but for others as well. I embraced being a book worm so fully after reading this one. It taught me a lot about humanity, compassion, and death. Its icon status is so well-deserved.

Since I won’t be here for the second half of the month, I decided to do the prompt for Day 27 - BEAUTIFUL - What’s the most beautiful book you own? The answer is the illustrated edition of Stardust: Being a Romance Within the Realms of Faerie, by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Charles Vess. It was the first official addition to my Neil Gaiman book collection, in that it was the first that needed to be searched for, that was difficult to find, that had to be collected, and that sparked the desire to collect.

And the second question: is it as good on the inside as it is pretty?

Answer: Yes, but it’s also just as pretty inside.

AUGUST SELFIE CHALLENGE

Day 1 - Intro (yes, I’m a day late. My life is weird right now)

Hey, everyone! I’m CaptainBookamir, enthusiastic reader and a book-and-tolkien (mostly) blogger. I read a lot of fantasy. I also like historical fiction, classics, mysteries, and the occasional non-fiction. I’m 23 and usually live in the Netherlands. However, I’ll be doing a slightly different ASC, namely a “travelling” edition! I’m moving to the Highlands of Scotland for my internship on the 6th. I study ecology and I’m very glad to be going, especially since I lived in Scotland as a kid (although that was near Glasgow). Mind you, I don’t usually take selfies and I’m not particularly good at photography either so challenge is definitely the right word!

ASC Day 1: Intro

Hi everyone! I’m Typewriter (Nani in real life), I’m 29, and I’m from the US.

I’m also horrible at selfies and not super comfortable introducing myself, but here goes:

I’m a classical musician who mostly works in retail. I knit, crochet, cross stitch, and fold lopsided origami. I read anything I can get my hands on, especially love science fiction and mysteries. I own an embarrassing number of Star Trek books. I claim my favorite movie is Children of Men, but really it’s Supertroopers. I have opinions about everything, but tend to keep them to myself in public. I’m new to booklr and not quite sure what I have to say yet.

I’m really enjoying seeing all of your faces and reading your intros. Hope you don’t mind looking at my weird mug too much!

August Selfie Challenge - Day 1

My name is Anna and I’ll be 21 on the 4th of August.

I’m from a tiny little country called New Zealand - we’re most well-known for how LOTR and the Hobbit were filmed here  I’ve always loved reading, and even though I’m now a full-time law student, I try to read a book a week. I love historical fiction, horror, mystery, sci-fi, fantasy...pretty much everything.
