Is Heaven 'up'? Whether you are a film or church goer (or both like me) you would be forgiven for thinking so. Today Christians celebrate Jesus ascending 'up' into heaven - affirming the Biblical language of Heaven being 'up' (and Hell being 'down'). This then is the cultural perception - and the one picked up by most films. So while it's particularly obvious in my favourite afterlife film - 'A Matter of Life and Death' ('Stairway to Heaven' in the USA) it's hard to think of a life after death film that doesn't have heaven up and hell down (let me know if you think of one). Of course Jesus knew otherwise so why perpetuate the myth? I think he had enough on his plate explaining a whole new theological world view to try and explain a scientific one as well. Today with our modern understanding that time and space are relative it's much easier to understand that heaven is another dimension but for the early disciples it was much more symbolic for Jesus to go 'up' rather than just disappear again.
