Asante Akrafokonmu Gold ‘Soul’ Badge: Symbol of Vitality and Protection
The Asante Akrafokonmu Gold ‘Soul’ Badge holds deep cultural and symbolic significance within Akan tradition. Gold Weight : Antelope, 1800s, Cleveland Museum of Art: African Art
The wealth and power of the Asante kingdom was derived primarily from its massive gold resources. Since at least 1600, small weights in brass and bronze were used to weight gold dust and nuggets. The royal court had the most elaborate store of weights, while commoners often had about a dozen. Their imagery falls into two broad cateogries: geometric and representational. The latter often refers to proverbs, which used judiciously, marked a wise person. The weight in the form of an antelope with enormous horns may refer to the proverb "had I known" -- a visual pun between the length of the horns and the idea of hindsight as perfect vision. Size: Overall: 5.2 cm (2 1/16 in.) Medium: brass, bronze

Goldweight Depicting a Double Crocodile, Asante, 1800, Art Institute of Chicago: Arts of Africa
Weights for measuring gold dust were made and used throughout Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire for more than five centuries, from about 1400 to 1900. These weights are either figurative or abstract and are usually divided into an early period (c. 1400–1700) and a late period (c. 1700–1900). During the late period, an increased variety and number of figurative weights emerged, although abstract weights continued to be made. Although used in economic transactions, the individual pieces could also function symbolically as indicators of wealth when placed on display. Many types of animals, birds, and reptiles are represented in Akan proverb gold weights. This gold weight takes the form of a double crocodile; the bodies are combined into a central square element with rough hatch marks suggestive of crocodile skin. The noses of the crocodiles point upward, their legs and arms splay outward, and their tails curve toward the heads. In its complexity and interaction of formal elements, the composition borders on the baroque. Various gold weights continued to be used until around 1900, at which point gold mining was brought under European control and colonial coinage replaced the gold-dust currency. However, gold weights continued to be cast as collectibles for the domestic and tourist markets, as may have been the case with this piece.—Permanent Collection Object Description Gift of Muriel Kallis Newman Size: 1.3 x 4.5 x 3.2 cm (1/2 x 1 3/4 x 1 1/4 in.) Medium: Copper alloy

Asante weights. Drummer and drum from a set of Asante gold weights
Gold Coast (Ghana), nineteenth or twentieth century ORCS.4.05.01
Gold dust functioned as a universal medium of exchange in West Africa, measured by scale according to a standardised system of weights. Designs for the weights and boxes were both geometric and figurative. Figurative designs featured a wide range of animate objects (animals, fish, insects and birds) and inanimate objects (musical instruments, tools, weapons and status objects). Men, women and children were also sculpted, engaged in a host of activities. The significance of the gold weights as an art form transcends their economic function, sometimes alluding to proverbs and folktales, and reflecting wider Asante spiritual beliefs and cultural practices. This set was purchased from a Hausa trader by D. M. Lawson in the Gold Coast during 1926–32.

2020 Best Hospices – Oregon
Tumblr media
ElderPerfect a leading publisher on senior healthcare across the United States, today announced the recipients of the Best Hospices in Oregon for 2020. These awards are designed to recognize providers based on their ability to consistently deliver excellence in the areas of Health Inspections, Quality of Residence Care, Penalties and Staffing. We’ve identified 35 of 50 (70%) facilities that meet our top rating. This report marks the Gold Standard in terms of care for seniors.
Tumblr media
Hospice Overview
These facilities aim to improve the quality of life of patients with active, progressive disease(s) who have minimal prospect of cure. With the growth and ageing of America's population, and an increase of generally incurable illnesses, the types of patient groups requiring hospices has widened.24-hour care with expert pain and symptom control.Focus is on quality of life.Direct access professionals and volunteers trained to support terminal patient and their carers. 0 Ranked Best Facilities  5/5
Rankings | Quality of Patient Care
National Average 34% Best Providers 92%
Rating Methodology
Health Inspections Every year, the government assigns inspectors to conduct a formal review of hospice facilities for regulatory purposes to meet the mandates outlined for Medicare and Medicaid, this aims to measure and improve the safety of residents across providers. Facilities may also be inspected when complaints are submitted or based on a reported incident. When noncompliance is identified, the facility is served a citation that indicates which regulation that was identified, along with the severity of the incident. hospice facilities are subsequently required to execute a program of resolution in order to meet compliance. Some scenarios require enforcement actions to be applied, such as a civil monetary penalty or withholding of payment(s), to incentivize resolution in a timely manner.Penalties Facilities are applied 2 types of penalties due to non-compliance / accumulation of incidents. Civil penalties are monetary fines that may be applied to a facility based on citations / infractions identified during a review. The severity of a penalty is defined primarily by the size and frequency of the infraction.Quality of Residence Care There are 3 types of resident care ratings, but for this exercise, we primarily focused on the overall quality measure rating. The quality measures (QMs) include 17 data points that are derived from clinical information reported by the respective hospice facilities and also from Medicare claims data submitted for payment. Ratings are calculated for the QM domain using the 4 most recent quarters for which data are available. A hospice facilities receives points contingent on performance on each measure (weighting distribution is not equal).Staffing Staffing research is submitted regularly by the facility and is adjusted for the requirement of the facilities residents. For each of registered nurse staff and total staffing, a 1 - 5 rating is applied according to definitions established for each category. These ratings are subsequently combined to assign an overall staffing rating. As an example, to get an overall staffing rating of 5 stars, nursing homes must earn a rating of 5 stars for both registered nurses and total staffing. hospice facilities could also be assigned a 1 star rating should they not have a registered nurse on-site daily, and do not submit staffing data, or which the data cannot be verified.

From the Volta to the Kongo to the Nile, from scarification to gold weights to hieroglyphics, the swastika has been used throughout AfriKa for a long time… When you see hear the word “swastika or see this symbol what are the first words that come to your mind? “Nazis.” “Hitler.” “Aryans.” “Blonde hair and blue eyes.” Then where would you guess these come from? An educated guess would be India.  But no, they are all from Africa.  That’s right A-F-R-I-K-A.  They are gold dust weights used by the Ashanti ppl, to be more precise. They are also called Akan. The Akan occupy a large part of West Afrika including parts of Ghana and the Ivory Coast and include many sub-ethnic groups such as the Baule and the Asante (Ashanti). The Akan were producing them to weigh gold dust which was their currency, thus the name ‘gold weights’.  When used on the gold weight, the swastika was a symbol of currency, expressing power, money, wealth and integrity.  The idea and the implementation of gold-based currency came from the Akan people of modern-day Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana.   The swastika is also one of the Akan people’s famous Adinkra symbols.  According to one source, the swastika is referred to by the Akan as a monkey’s foot. Another source says it is called Kode Emower Ewa (‘talons of the eagle’), represents devotion and service and is shaved on the back of the heads of the Queen Mother’s servants.  Still another source names it Nkotimsefuopua, claiming similarly that certain attendants on the Queen Mother who dressed their hair in this fashion. The Asante also weave the swastika into their cloth. It is a symbol of resistance against foreign domination, and superior military strategy.  This motif represents  the superior military strategy with which Akan nations such as the Asante and Akwamu defeated the West Asians who had superior arms.

Anybody that enjoys shoes will resemble a child opening multiple gifts at Christmas when viewing this greater than 13,000-strong collection. Photo on your own woozy and not sure where to focus first and dying to unwrap each beautiful plan!
Creator Sonja Bata as well as her group spent years curating this world-renown exhibition that takes you on a transformative trip into the design and also production of shoes over lots of decades.
There is an interactive Design-A-Shoe display, 17th century glass shoes from Holland, silk covered footwear from Korea as well as Barbie bite-sized shoes collection. I additionally saw Treccani Milanos, 19th Century Turkish bathhouse sandals, gold-leafed sandals of Asante rulers, plastic thong shoes worn by the Dalai Lama, and much more.
A number of the artefacts are fascinating. If you're strapped for time, go see Standing Tall: The Curious History of Male in Heels or the Conventional Artic Shoes sections initially. They placed a completely various spin on footwear as we understand it. The expense for adult access is CA$ 14.
Go Through Kensington Market
Situated in the heart of midtown Toronto as well as west of Spadina Road, Kensington Market is a multi-colored and also multi-cultural neighborhood that is a mix of houses and also stores that sell food, drinks, seasonings and also apparel. Below's an additional plus: its brightly repainted buildings and also graffiti-outfitted wall surfaces will certainly develop picture-perfect backdrops for your Instagram and also Facebook feeds!
If it's cold when you're there and the weather gets also chilly, do not despair. Super comfy coffee shops are likely to bid with steaming mugs of warm chocolate and also energy-rebooting expressos or comforting cappucinos. After a workout cuppa something, small alleys leading to throwback 19th century cottages that rest on close whole lots will lure you to check out a lot more. There is no entry charge.
Time traveling at Casa Loma
From the minute you tip throughout Casa Loma's threshold you are brought in right into a time of no-expense spared grandeur. Buildings of this dimension as well as grandeur were unquestionably the domain name of the abundant as well as indulgent.
It is the previous residence of Sir Henry Pellatt, a little known stock market capitalist who simply took place to build a house the size of a castle after that ignore it when he faced cash troubles one decade later on. It has 98 rooms and also reportedly took 300 guys as well as 3 years to build.
The 'castle' is now a much-visited gallery and also spots however occasionally, it also is the place to be for private events. Regular visitors can enjoy far-ranging sights of the city from the towers, look unabashedly at the ornate as well as delicately built period home furnishings or see a tiny antique car collection. Songs lovers will certainly value the majesty of the piping system for a 3/15 model Wurlitzer Movie theater body organ that was added after the owner passed away and also young children can appreciate a bite or two in the on-site dining establishment.

Yes, you might get a little queasy or your mind might deceive you right into assuming it will break underneath you. Yet it will not. Goldweight Depicting a Catfish, Asante, 1750, Art Institute of Chicago: Arts of Africa
The Akan used the lost-wax technique to create brass-cast weights for economic transactions involving gold. Although it is not clear when the convention of weights was first introduced, there is evidence that the Akan people traded gold with Islamized merchants from the West African interior grasslands many centuries before the arrival of Europeans. Some goldweights correspond to the Islamic weight system of North Africa, and appear to be fundamentally linked to the trans-Saharan trade, in which Arabs were deeply involved.Stylistic studies of goldweights have yielded relative dates for these works that can be divided broadly into early and late periods. Abstract goldweights are assigned to sometime between 1500 and 1720. Akan artists also employed an assortment of figurative motifs in executing such miniature brass castings. These forms, which are less common than the abstract weights and are remarkably ornate, appear to have been modeled in the period of hegemony of the Asante kingdom, from 1700 through 1874. Regardless of weather the figures are single or part of a larger composition, their intention seems to have been to communicate a message of a collective or personal nature. This catfish goldweight may evoke the following saying: “If the catfish [mudfish] in the stream grows fat, it does so to the benefit of the crocodile,” which means the master always stands to benefit from the servant’s prosperity. However, given the fact that here the catfish is depicted alone and not with the crocodile, another meaning may have been intended. The well-known capacity of this fish type to survive the most arid conditions may suggests its symbolic implications for longevity. —Revised from Nii Otokunor Quarcoopome, “Art of the Akan,” African Art at the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum Studies, 23, no. 2 (1997), p. 144. Asante gold-dust weights
Until the second half of the mid-19th century, the Asante and related peoples of Ghana and the Ivory Coast used small brass castings made by the lost-wax process as weights for measuring their gold-dust currency.
These weights, made in large numbers by professional metal workers, came in all shapes and sizes. There were two sorts of weights: those which represent miniature objects, creatures,…
