Right?! I have so many thoughts... from the aesthetics they serve to the choreography they do... the voice providers and the animators... the company that made this all happen...
MAVE: has certainly taken notes from K/DA and aespa and I'd love to see where they'll take us.
This was me when I found them on my YouTube:
yea I love them sm fr 🥺🫶
Idk why you rb'd it– but ty anyway for boosting my post on MAVE:'s fandom naming event!
MAVE: debuted last January 25 so we're a pretty small fandom atm... but we're steadily growing!
Their first music show performance was such a hit (God bless the animation studio 🙏) that it was the most watched on MBCkpop's YouTube for January. They just debuted but my virtual girls are slaying 😌🥰
Quick thing about MAVE: — they're a 4-member completely virtual K-pop group composed of SIU:, ZENA:, TYRA:, and MARTY:. They all have awesome voice providers tbh and while people are hoping for reveals, I personally think that them debuting with virtual characters shields them from common controversies in the industry like stalking and dating scandals. Besides, they've got lore. They have lore, Void. I'm sure of it. They've got a story to tell, and they just need time to tell it.
Anyways, this got longer than intended– oops. That will be all from me!
Thanks again! 🙇
I will always reblog every cool thing my friends make or participate in :>
This sounds very 👀👀👀👀👀

We might finally know, ahead of D23, who is directing TOY STORY 5. Per a Japanese news article.
None other than... Andrew Stanton, but also... A second director in McKenna Harris...
So, Stanton... That's BIG...
Stanton, who did story and script on the original TOY STORY, is part of what I like to call "Team TOY STORY": Him, John Lasseter (director), current Pixar leader Pete Docter (story), and Lee Unkrich (editor). All members of the Brain Trust, too. And all of them returned for some kind of role on the sequels.
Docter and Stanton are pretty much the last of that core team that are still at Pixar, Unkrich intermittently consults on the post-TOY STORY 4 films, as he's been off doing other projects, namely editing recently-released books on THE SHINING. We all know what happened to John Lasseter. Stanton taking the helm, if he is indeed straight-up directing this movie and not just doing story/script, is a curious development... Because he's been doing a lot of live-action stuff lately, and trying to get films of his own off the ground. One of which, IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE, was filmed in spring 2023 and will be released by Searchlight Pictures. Eventually.
The last animated feature film he directed was FINDING DORY, released in 2016. Since then, his directing work has mainly been in TV: STRANGER THINGS, BETTER CALL SAUL, FOR ALL MANKIND, 3 BODY PROBLEM, etc. He even directed for OBI-WAN KENOBI. Now that he has at least one other non-Pixar movie coming out, maybe he's game to direct a long-time endeavor again?
Fun fact: Stanton originally intended for FINDING DORY to be directed by someone else. Stanton had tried to get a live-action/CG-filled sci-fi epic going after the 2008 release of WALL-E, a film that could potentially launch a trilogy... That unfortunate 2012 film was JOHN CARTER. It's actually supposed to be called JOHN CARTER OF MARS, but Disney execs cut the "Mars" in response to how their mo-cap movie MARS NEEDS MOMS did at the box office. (Planet Mars, for whatever reason, had been considered box office poison... But it didn't affect THE MARTIAN in 2015). Disney then proceeded to saddle it with a terrible marketing campaign, and the $250m behemoth lost so much money at the box office...
So, Stanton re-routed, and decided to assume the director position on FINDING DORY shortly thereafter. So maybe he doesn't mind returning to his characters/worlds when the opportunities aren't always there? Maybe all that TV work and that one small movie gave him his fill for now?
Again, that is, if he's actually the director.
It's an interesting trajectory, though. John Lasseter directed TOY STORY and TOY STORY 2, the latter having co-directors in Lee Unkrich and Ash Brannon (the original director when it was a direct-to-video movie). Unkrich was promoted to director on TOY STORY 3, as John was too busy running 3 studios to do it (though not busy enough to take over CARS 2, apparently). John actually was aiming to direct TOY STORY 4 as well, but then handed the reins to his co-director Josh Cooley. And Cooley left Pixar, he directed this year's TRANSFORMERS ONE for Paramount.
So, if it's Stanton, that makes sense. If not, I'm gonna guess it's a co-director of a previous picture or someone involved with at least one of the films or shorts. Angus MacLane, who directed SMALL FRY, TOY STORY OF TERROR! and LIGHTYEAR, got let go recently. As did Steve Purcell, who directed TOY STORY THAT TIME FORGOT. A new perspective is always fun, but if it's a veteran, I'm curious either way.
McKenna Harris being the other director is very cool, almost like a veteran getting a first-time feature director off the ground with a classic favorite. Harris was a story artist on LUCA, and directed that film's short CIAO ALBERTO, in addition to being an associate exec producer on ELEMENTAL. She also did story work on Disney Animation films RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET and RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON, and even did character design for Cartoon Network's WE BEAR BEARS... Whose creator Daniel Chong looks to be directing a picture at Pixar as well... A good get, if that article is true.

Legendary Animators: Mary Blair's and Dave Hand's experience working with Walt Disney
By Sofi Ojeda
Let's take a journey to the 1930s, '40s, and '50s, the golden age of the Disney Studio, a period of prosperity of the United States, where the Baby Boomers as kids, had a lot of free time, often spent watching Disney animations in movie theaters, and enjoying the premiere of Disneyland in 1955, which further solidified Disney's profound influence on the young audience of the time.
In today's blog,we will be delving into two of the people who were pioneers of the creation of this whole world and what it was like for them to work with Walt Disney persona. The animators of that time who worked with Disney were generally men; even their main group was called the famous "Nine Old Men of Walt's Animation." But at the same time, there were other unknown and extremely talented animators who contributed immensely to the aesthetics and narrative of Disney's films. To contrast this, I decided to analyze one of the most famous and successfull man director Dave Hand and one of the most famous Creative Artist and Designer Mary Blair.
''Story artist/animator Retta Scott with visual development artist Mary Blair. They are studying a baby alligator at the Griffith Park Zoo in 1940 or 1941, I assume in preparation for Fantasia's dinosaur sequence.''
As the Disney team was growing in the 1950s, they posted different signs seeking male and female animators, the latter with the conditions: "Women do not do any creative work related to preparing the cartoons for the screen", as well as their age conditions, etc.
"If you were a man blessed with creativity and artistic talent, you held a place in the Animation Department and could even direct films, but if you were a woman with the same skills, the only department open to you at that time was Ink and Paint." - Mary Beth Culler.
In the research I conducted to decide which interviews to use for this blog, I read those from the book "Working with Disney(2011)" by Peri Don, in which Dave Hand was mentioned. Dave Hand (January 23, 1900 - Plainfield, New Jersey) attended the Art Institute of Chicago before returning to the East Coast and starting his career in animation at the J. R. Bray Studio.
Later, Hand worked for Max Fleischer on the "Out of the Inkwell" series. He came to California to consider live-action filmmaking but returned to animation, this time with the Walt Disney Studios. After the success of "Victory Through Air Power," he left the studio for an animation opportunity in England.
Dave Hand Portrait.
His career was consistent and very (secretly) appreciated by Disney, as he said in his interview. He played a significant role in the studio from 1930 and was the first director (after Walt) of short subject cartoons. He also directed "Snow White." In his interview, he mentioned that working with Disney did not seem difficult in general, or maybe that is what he had to mention. According to Ben Sharpsteen in "Working with Walt (2008)" by Don Peri, there were some conflicts with Disney regarding accepting Disney's criticisms in the previews. He felt that Disney was a man who always had to be right; he did not contradict him but discussed until the idea pleased both of them (especially him). The only thing he said he did not like was that he could not know if something would work unless it was shown in theaters, and then it was too late to correct it, but that had nothing to do with Disney itself but with a technical aspect of the industry. He said that Disney trusted him completely:
"I was allowed full latitude on all details of production; Walt monitored the results from the story to the preview."- David Hand
For Mary Blair, working with Disney was a process of ups and downs, during which there was a time when part of the studio complained that it was difficult for them to transfer her concept arts to animation when she had a marked watercolor style. She had to leave the studio because she preferred to stick to her ideas, but at the same time, Walt appreciated her art and called her back to go to South America for her research on culture and environment. There, she transformed her art into something more conceptual with color blocks and very saturated and vibrant palettes, like those of the cultures they were able to appreciate. She developed a distinct look for her concept art by using vivid colors from gouache and tempera.
From there, she was able to participate in the creative part beyond painting and inking the animations and creations of other animators. Many times, they arrived almost unchanged in the movies, as with Cinderella's castle or when the camera sees through the cups' ears to the Mad Hatter and the rabbit at Alice's unbirthday party in Wonderland. She also worked on "Saludos Amigos" and "The Three Caballeros," along with the other trusted men of the company as a result of the trip, in which she was the only woman.
Mary Blairs concept art for Alice in Wonderland animated movie.
It is a shame that like her, many of the women had to stop working at the studio to work at home or to take care of their children. There were approximately 100 women. Blair once recalled:
"I had three jobs: raising children, keeping house, and doing my artwork." - Mary Balir
Her best friend Alice also said that Blair never realized how good she was; she always had insecurities. Mary Blair learned her craft at The Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles in the mid-1930s. She joined The Walt Disney Company in 1940, where she created concept paintings for projects related to "Fantasia" (1940), "Dumbo" (1941), and "The Lady and the Tramp" (1955). Blair left Disney in 1953 to concentrate on illustrating children's books and raising a family.
There were also other female workers of Disney of that time, very talented women, like Retta Scott, who made the concepts for "Bambi," and Disney liked it so much that he offered her to animate a sequence of the film, but that was later.
Mary Blair and Disney coworkers. Trip to South America.
Comparing the career of Dave Hand with Mary Blair's they were such talented artists, it was more challenging for Mary to maintain the consistency of her career due to the challenges women faced at the time, apart from working at Disney, and also their creations had to be more justified to be considered in the studio. Even after demonstrated their talent, she or neither of her female coworkers directed a movie at that time, as Dave Hand.
Despite that, for them both, it was a challenge to work with Disney, as he was a very stubborn person, and some might call him a dreamer. As Dave described, the work was 24 hours a day, and that also translates into overwork problems, and in general, Walt did not express his recognition directly to his workers.
Over time, many wonderful artists have passed through Disney's offices, bringing good experiences with characters and cartoons for people of all ages. Some of these artists are more recognized than others, but you can't deny the impact and significance they have had to this day. However, when you watch a movie, in most cases, you can't tell what gender the person who made it was, or where they come from. This seemingly magical and fair anonymity extends to the animators and people in the industry in general. Additionally, it's important to consider that other industries of the time had similar characteristics. The context in which the Disney company grew doesn't make it "meaner," although it's always valuable to review history to avoid repeating it.

May Update + Demographic Shift
Hello once again!
My name is Eric, and I have made a further update regarding my independent studio known as Gadeton. Let’s begin shall we?
So first and foremost, What is Gadeton exactly?
Unless you have read the “About” page on my website please skip this if you already know it.
If you can tell by the name of my studio, Gadeton is an independent studio made by me as it is considered to be the evolution of my past independent studios such as Quixolite, Kixubug, you name them all (though I really don’t like mentioning my past independent studios names by the way). As you can tell by the slogan for my independent studio, the slogan is “Retrofuturism of Entertainment”, which implies that one of my illustrations as well for my art style is heavily inspired from the art style in the late 90s to the 2000s. I’ve decided for my independent studio to focus more on quality rather than quantity. Since making too many series would be a time-consuming task to create from comics, to anything that would give me quite some stress.
So I have the opportunity of creating something that I could come up with from one of my experiences through my childhood and others that I could think through my mind. I’ve been drawing a ton of illustrations for a decade and boy it was a wild ride to have me experience this.
I’ve been working hard on one of my projects like Nachinko Buckets for example, in which it is planned to be released once I get the pilot of the script done, so I can start animating the pilot episode of the series.
However, there is something that I need to discuss that's been coming through my mind lately.
I was thinking of shifting the demographic of my independent studio to a more older demographic somewhere that is between the preteens (8-12) and the teens/young adult demographic (13-21). For what I have gather I was originally going to make my independent studio to focus more on the action, but I decided to scrap it in favor of a style that would take some influence from companies like 2Spot Studios for example and a ton of Newgrounds animations as well for the illustrations from the 2000s as well as many DeviantArt artist from the 2000s that have a similar style as well.
As a result of the demographic being shifted to a more slightly older audience, there will be some changes to one of my future projects, and here is a list of everything.
Fierwood and my other future project are merged to form The Renenocks!
That’s right, my project Fierwood as well for my other future project featuring my character such as Monelope, Natochi, etc. are being merged back into The Renenocks. Meaning that I reverted my project back to Renetack. The reason why I made this decision is that I find the two of them to be quite similar to one another and the fact that the other future project set to be release in 2024 or later would not reach its quality and I deemed that this project seems to be too similar to Nachinko Buckets and the fact that demographic of my project did not reach its potential standards than I expected to be. So I decided to give myself the opportunity to merge the two together once again, and bring back three characters Boltrice, Innoton (now renamed Isaac), and Omeliot (now renamed Ollie). But this time, I decided to make it quite different as Isaac is now the main protagonist of my series with Boltrice and Ollie being the secondary protagonist as well. I also plan on rewriting most of the personalities and traits to all three of them, while giving Boltrice and Ollie a few traits from an old project back in 2019 known as Synthetic Charms, the project that the two originated from.
Here are the new designs for Boltrice, Isaac, and Ollie, which can be seen down below.
I’m planning on reposting most of my characters that I drew on social media as well as updating their bios on my DeviantArt page. If you want more information about this project, please contact me on my other social media accounts as well as using my email. Let’s go on to the next change.
Further changes to Nachinko Buckets
As a result of me shifting the demographic to my independent studio, Nachinko Buckets will have some minor changes to the project as listed down below:
An unnamed minor French kid antagonist and Crunch are removed from the series I believe that the unnamed French kid antagonist was deemed to be too similar to Nerdy from A Day with Bowser Jr, and as for Crunch, I just don’t find Crunch to be that interesting to me as he feels like a carbon copy to Lorne from Kid vs. Kat.
Valentina Vinci and Heather Cameron will be moved to the role as voicing additional voices for each of the side or background characters in the show as a result of the removal of a minor French kid antagonist and Crunch.
I’m planning to rewrite some of the character’s personalities since I find some of the characters to be either too cliche, stereotypical, or rather too similar to my characters for one of my future projects.
Most of the surreal nature to the series is removed entirely, but parodies and references are still present though. The reason why the surreal nature is removed from the series is because of the changes that I made to the main location of Nadoville, as it doesn’t have any surreal nature to it anymore, though it still keeps the strange nature to it as many of the rules in the city is still strange akin like Wayside School.
Nanopia has been renamed to Nadoville
I think that’s pretty much it for all of the changes that I made for one of my two projects as a result of the demographic shift. To sum that up, I just wanted to try something new in order for me to achieve the quality that many creators out there that have their passion on their project and I could agree with anyone that do support independent creators throughout the world with animation studios such as Glitch Productions and other independent animators around the world, as well as indie game developers like Matt Makes Games and others that have their passion as well. So I want to focus more on the quality of one of my projects and hope it will be a hit for many audiences around here and knowing that it will reach the quality that I would expect to see for my future projects.
So with that out of the way, I hope you understand my decision to shift the demographic to a slightly older audience while keeping all of my projects safe for work. If you have any further questions please contact me via email or one of my social media accounts.
Anyways, I’ll see you then.

CTS B Compulsory Question 1
Most people wish to share a part of their life with others. This is not something that can be explained simply; they hope to express it in a 'language of their own'—one that captures the insights and experiences uniquely shaped by their personal journey.
This longing is closely linked to the essence of a manifesto. While a manifesto is an act of documenting one’s goals or thoughts, it goes beyond merely listing ideas, as it is a way for an individual to boldly declare their beliefs, values, and goals to the world.
The reason for having a manifesto is clear: when a vision for change and growth is shared and agreed upon, people feel a stronger sense of unity and purpose. A manifesto provides direction and clarifies the values people should pursue within this journey.
Among them, artists' manifestos are deeply connected with various art movements. Movements like Futurism or Surrealism used manifestos to express their determination to break from the boundaries of traditional art. For example, André Breton’s Surrealist Art Movement is one such case.
This week, our group had a valuable opportunity to create a manifesto as designers. Our manifesto reflects our passion for design and declares our goal of bringing positive changes to the environment through our work.
I believe this act is born from the combination of 'creative practice' and 'critical thinking' that we learned in CTS B, Week 1. Creative practice drives an artist to break beyond existing forms to try new expressions, and critical thinking makes this creative direction clearer.
One of the manifestos I found interesting through this experience is Dieter Rams' Ten Principles of Good Design. His manifesto provides concrete guidelines on what ‘good design’ should be, emphasizing both functionality and aesthetic balance. Compared to our group's manifesto, his is clear and actionable, inspiring us to incorporate more specific and achievable goals into our own.
Taking this as a reference, I was able to create a new manifesto focused on clear, practical actions that reflect a designer's mindset and are embedded within design work.
This manifesto activity has positively influenced other modules of my work as well. For example, in Materiality & Techniques module, I created a zine on the theme of 'Memory,' reflecting these design values. I minimized the text and added graphic elements to convey the meaning more clearly.
Additionally, following the principles outlined in my manifesto, I began learning Blender to take on new challenges of my own. This has allowed me to create 3D characters, animate them, and apply them to additional programs like the AR feature of Studio B modules.
This experience reminds me that design should pursue meaning beyond mere beauty or function. Moving forward, this manifesto will deeply anchor my design philosophy and my work overall. I aim not only to create works but to design with a purpose of making a better world, and I will continue to work towards that vision.

After a long period of development, 2D animation has changed from TV broadcast to network projection, which provides a better way for excellent animation works to spread, and a lot of animation studios have emerged. As a student studying 2D animation, joining an independent animation studio is also one of my ideal jobs, and animators will have the opportunity to participate in the production of top animation works. For example, "Love, Death & Robots" is an independent adult animation series produced by animation studios in different countries. These series contain a variety of artistic styles and the animation quality is very good. These art studios perfectly integrate their own artistic styles into these animation works, and the plots of each episode of animated short films are very wonderful. Some of the scripts are adapted from famous novels and biographies, and these plots have been given new definitions after being adapted. This has helped artists to develop their own areas of expertise and audiences have become more receptive to different arts. The art style of my animation projects is very two-dimensional and has some dark humor in it, for example one of the animation Histories has that kind of art style as well, called Alternate Histories, Directed and designed by "Victor Maldonado & Alfredo Torres," this animated short is an application called the Multiverse to simulate the impact of different events on human history. The main content of this animated short film tells about what would happen to the world if Hitler died early, such as being stabbed to death after arguing with a child, being hit by a passing carriage, being hit by a meteorite, etc. These different ways of death also triggered different historical trends, such as the Soviet Union winning the Cold War and becoming the first country to land on the moon. The final animation gives six different endings, which are all very creative and humorous. This kind of plot setting with an air of history creates infinite possibilities for the direction of the plot, and animators can apply their own creative ideas to the animation. For the audience, every time the trend of history changes, they will expect what the result will be this time, which always attracts the audience's attention to the animation, and it can be said that this animation is very successful. At the end of the animation, the author provides more imagination space for the audience, one of which is how the world would change if the assassination of US President Lincoln had a different result. Such an ending not only shows the infinite possible animation theme but also allows the audience to have more associations. In terms of painting style, this short animation adopts a two-dimensional animation style, which is also my favorite and best at. As a student majoring in animation, I often think about what kind of narrative plot is very attractive to the audience. This animation short film provides me with a very good example and has a lot of influence on my animation creation.

Build up animation skills that are in high demand in India to get a secured career
Animation is a method of making a series of drawings, models or even photographs of puppets, to create an illusion of movement in a sequence. Because our eyes can retain an image for approximately 1/10 of a second, when multiple images appear in rapid succession, the brain blends them into a single moving image. In the entertainment industry, animation is used to bring characters in a story to life, but it can be used to make any still image appear moving. Animation is an art form that can be applied to special effects in movies, TV, and video games and has uses for other industries that rely on images. Animation Recruitment Agency in India will always help you to know about animation. Animation is different types: Traditional Animation, 2D Animation, 3D Animation, Motion Graphics, stop Motion. Traditional is one of the oldest forms of animation in film. It’s sometimes called cell animation. The computer is just another tool, and 3D animation is still a long, intense process. Motion Graphics are pieces are digital graphics that create the illusion of motion usually for ads, title sequences in films, but ultimately exist to communicate something to the viewer. They are often combined with sound for multimedia projects. Stop motion involves taking individual photographs of physical models, objects, puppets or people as they are moved around, one frame at a time.
Animation offers a creative outlet and a fulfilling and promising professional path. However, following the right path is the key to propel towards a successful career. Any experience you can gain in the animation industry is extremely useful, as is broader film or TV experience. As a film animator, you could work for studio producing films or TV projects. Many animators find employment in the computer games industry, either for large games developers or for smaller independent studios. As well as creating animated films, animators also work in post-production and VFX, where employers include Lucas film, Framestore, MPC, Rushes, and The Mill. Your skills as an animator are also in demand in other areas, such as computer systems design, software publishing, marketing, advertising, and medical, architectural animation. Best Animation Recruitment Agency in India helps to get better talent for the organization. You could also look for opportunities which allow you to develop complementary skills, such as working with others, working independently and managing your own time.
Recruitment also refers to the process of attracting, selecting, and appointing potential candidates to meet the organization resource requirements. The hiring of the candidates can done internally i.e. within the organization, or from external sources. And the process should be performed within a time constraint and it should be cost effective. A good recruitment process allows you to find qualified candidates quickly and efficiently. The process requires intentional planning and constant evaluation. The recruitment process should be streamlined so each staff member has the tools and resources they need for their step in the process. Being proactive in hiring new employees increases the profitability and performance of your business. Top Animation Recruitment Agency in India can provide better plan. Work experience plays a vital part in an animator’s recruitments. Most employers prefer artists who have experience. Students pursuing their animation education through a degree program can earn on the-job experience through an internship as part of their graduation requirement.
Animation is always changing. Since the start, animation has been growing and changing into what we have today. Animation is now one of the biggest industries in the world, and many countries have put their own spin on traditional techniques. At first, animation was mostly in movies and short clips. But now, it's everywhere: TV shows, commercials, YouTube, social media, and even video games. The pictures and graphics in all these places have gotten better over time and they're still improving. But whichever direction the animation industry takes in future, we can expect the pace of change to be faster than ever before, as the technologies continue to progress rapidly, the skill of artists grows greater each day, and the demand for animated content increases year on year. Animation also plays an important role in modern business. It is frequently used in advertising to grab the attention of the audience. It is a useful tool for keeping the audience engaged and for communicating information quickly and effectively. Animated films are big business. Some of the top grossing films of all time are animated, including ‘Frozen’ and ‘Toy Story 3’. Animation is also a highly effective tool in marketing, advertising and even education, thanks to its unique ability to communicate messages in a highly memorable way.

Artist and Course Research
There are many art courses out there that offer you the best guidance in your art journey, but in this post I will be talking about three in particular.
Contemporary Art Practice - North East Scotland college.
This course provides a window into contemporary art - a term loosely used to describe art of the current day or relatively recent past - allowing you to build upon your skill sets, knowledge and recognition of specialist art. You look back at historical studies that you can use to draw inspiration, learn and link back to your own individual art, work in teams to complete specific tasks, and also work individually to build up a portfolio of work that you are able to use to apply to any future courses or exhibitions etc. In the course, you complete assignments such as:
Observational drawing
Contemporary art practice, both 2D and 3D
Public art
Contemporary digital art
Life drawing
Overall this course offers you a taste of many different things, allowing you to build up a traditional art portfolio as well as a digital one, opening many opportunities for your career. As well as this, it is a HNC/HND course, which allows you to jump into third year at university if you so choose.
I will now talk about a couple of the university art courses you can choose from.
Fine Art - Gray’s School of Art
In this fine art course you develop and expand your critical skills, creative skills, and professional abilities to prepare you for your future career as an artist. You explore a wide range of subjects including; drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and moving image. You are provided with amazing art studios, fully equipped workshops, and work closely with highly experienced staff to create your best possible work that will then be used in things such as public exhibitions and some work experience. Not only does it provide you with all of these opportunities for exhibitions, but in your 3rd year, it provides you with the opportunity to study abroad in Europe, Canada or the US, opening a whole new gateway of opportunities for your art career.
Communications Design - Gray’s School of Art
In this course you explore graphics, illustration and photography, with design studios and workshop settings that allow you to fully explore both traditional techniques as well as the latest digital ones. You are provided with the opportunity to take part in a wide range of external facing activities such as studying abroad, international field trips, national design competitions and live collaborative projects. This course opens up pathways for people hoping to go into:
Graphic design
Illustration
Photography
Web design
Digital animation
Much more
Of course, not everyone opts for university or college for their next steps, and if they do, sometimes it's for something completely different than what they end up actually doing in their careers. Here's a little bit of information about what steps some of my favourite artists took/are taking to get to where they are in their art career.
Camila Salinas
Camila is a young Mexican-American artist who has gained a lot of traction and a vast audience through posting short videos of her art on tiktok and sharing her finished pieces through instagram. She first started gaining viewers during the pandemic, in which she posted videos of art that she had created to portray how life was as a teen living through the lockdown. She makes her content relatable, funny and snappy so that she grabs attention and leaves viewers in awe of her talent.
She is based in Texas, and is currently studying to gain her BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) degree in Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, a university that was founded and set up by a group of women in 1877, before any woman had the right to vote in the US.
Lulu Chen
Lulu Chen is an award winning freelance illustrator who also works on animations and has a major passion for storytelling. Lulu’s art style is aimed towards a children's book type of art, and she mainly works with adobe photoshop and corel painter. Due to her leaning towards a more childlike sense of art, Lulu actually studied Children's book illustration in San Francisco and London, which then led to her finding her passion in animation and storytelling. She attended Sheridan College and graduated in April 2023, developing her passion for bringing stories to life through colour, lighting and design.
Tahlia Stanton
Tahlia is another young artist who has gained a lot of traction for her art through social media, specifically tiktok, using it to share videos of her art progress when making her incredibly captivating pieces. She has a strong passion for colour and textures in her pieces, and loves to be experimental with her work. As for how her professional life started, Tahlia said:
“My professional career began with the rise of social media. Being recognised at the Young Australian Artist Of The Year Awards and awarded a visual art scholarship to Ballarat Clarendon College at the age of 15.”
She officially launched her creative practice and business in 2018, after graduating high school.

Media Independent Excursion: Sound! Euphonium and Uji
When I got to Kyoto, my first choice for my media based independent excursion was not Sound! Euphonium. Actually, I had no idea that the anime took place in Kyoto at all. Initially I had wanted to do my excursion at places that inspired Inuyasha, but unfortunately, most of them were places we were already visiting as a class. So, I had to switch gears. As fate would have it, I was shopping near Kyoto city hall and I stumbled upon a music store. It was there that I saw a whole host of Sound! Euphonium merch, which is an anime that I have loved since it was released in 2015. I had no idea that the anime took place in Kyoto, and in a neighborhood that was on the way back from Nara to boot.
I learned that Sound! Euphonium takes place in Uji, a district of Kyoto known for its matcha, Tale of Genji feature, and the KyoAni animation studio. KyoAni is the studio that produced not only Sound! Euphonium but also other classics such as K-On!, Free!, and Violet Evergarden. Many of their animations take place in Kyoto, as their backgrounds can be referenced directly from local sights. This gives a unique opportunity to compare the background design in the anime to real life locations, as well as evaluate the realism in the depiction of the neighborhood where this popular band anime takes place.
To figure out the many locations that are featured in the anime, I found assistance in “anime pilgrimage” guides. Anime pilgrimages are a new form of media interaction where people go to places featured in anime and take pictures that match the framing in an anime scene composition. For fun, I decided to try this out as well. I wasn’t nearly as good at shot matching as experienced pilgrims, but I had fun trying to get the frames that I remembered from the anime. The guides I used can be found at the bottom of this post. I went to several locations in Uji featured in Sound! Euphonium including Uji bridge, the Uji-Mimuroto 7/11, Uji Keihan station, and the iconic Ajirogi no Michi bench.
As I was walking around Uji to get to these various locations, I realized how unrealistic it is that the girls were capable of carrying their heavy brass instruments to and from school. I didn’t even walk the entirety of their route from school to home, because it would have taken over thirty minutes total. I don’t think it’s realistic that they walked this distance even without instruments. If I had to guess, the producers decided to include locations that would be easily recognizable by locals for a sense of local pride, rather than prioritizing realism in the route and distance.
Another thing I noted was that many of the locations were altered in the scene compositions to not only improve the visual composition of the shot but also to make the area look more aesthetically pleasing. For example, at Kumiko’s bench, the area looks well maintained and seems to perpetually have some sort of flowers. In reality, the area was quite overgrown and the trees obscured the most common shots of the bench she sits at. Not to mention that the water wasn’t nearly as pretty and still as the anime implies through the visuals. In fact, the rushing water of the river was quite loud, and I can’t imagine it would have been reasonable to practice an instrument there.
As an artist, I actually found the alterations the studio took to be quite reasonable. They kept the base character of each location and improved certain aspects to enhance the meanings behind each scene. The Uji bridge, though quite beautiful, didn’t have the same sort of celestial quality in the afternoon and nighttime that the anime shows. The purpose of these shots is not to be accurate to reality, but rather to bring about certain feelings in the watcher to set a scene or tone. The bridge and bench are both places for reflection for the characters, and thus are framed to be as serene and contemplative as possible. We should not take media representations of locations in Japan as fact, we should view them as art, characterized by feeling and aesthetic rather than accuracy.

Why I chose Simon Tofield and Hamstery
SIMON TOFIELD:
I chose him because I love his way of storytelling and the creative ways he exaggerates the silly things his cats do. He studies cat behavior as well and incorporates those into his animations. His animation style is also simple and he likes to switch between colored and black and white animations. His character designs are simple yet iconic. Even the sound designing, he does all the animal sounds himself. His animations do not include comprehensible dialogues. It’s mostly garbled talking, which suits the animation because dialogue isn’t really necessary. I love the theme he went with for the whole franchise. His series is a fun way to relax and unwind ourselves and have a good laugh after going through a hard time in life. For me that’s the best type of entertainment. It’s my comfort zone and I love cats so that’s a bonus point. I also love how he handled his franchise when he first started, because his first animation just blew up and it’s inspiring how he grasped the opportunity and turned it into a whole animation studio.
HAMSTERY:
I was not actually planning on choosing her at first. She was not even on my animator list since she’s known mostly for being an artist. Since I couldn’t contact any of the other animators for my second animator I remembered that she did start up a new animated series so I decided to interview her. I love her art style and her story telling as well. It’s colorful and mostly catered towards children but even adults and young adults like me can enjoy it. Her storylines are pretty simple but with an interesting plot and enjoyable plot twists. I love how she created an animated series based on characters and lore from the game “Animal Jam”. She even incorporated in game elements in her animation.
