Nine realms isn't canon, nine realms had all the power to fuck shit up for fans and kinda did. but its confirmed noncanon so doesn't actually matter what they do in the end. Maybe the night lights mixed with Sand wraiths that just happened to have darker then normal scales? Or another sub fury class? In the end I don't think dreamworks really cared too much about the whole thing and probably pushed for a dragon similar to toothless for marketing reasons `~`

Can’t get over how hard Dreamworks and HTTYD wrote itself into a corner. Either there are no more Night Furies and Thunder is the most inbred creature to ever exist or there are, which cements Grimmel as a lying non-threat and the separation as even more pointless and the last movie as stupid.
