SIRENE MY BELOVED!!! IT MAKES SENSE FOR HER TO BE OVERDESIGNED WITH CLASHING COLORS it was PURPOSEFUL!!! she has a very strange fashion sense. In-universe the fashion trends can be pretty extreme so she’s just an example of it (it’s for the best that she barely does anything bc it would be so hard to draw her fully every time). actually this does not even show the full extent of her design bc she has a lotta tattoos on her arms and legs (only ones shown here are the plants on her abdomen) and she usually wears a lot more than those goofy-ahh clothes. (w what noooo ahah her sleeves aren’t based on katniss’s mockingjay outfit in catching fire why would I do that) She also usually wears half a mask on her face, though here it’s just painted grey. anyway I love her she’s a musician and plays the COOLEST and EDGIEST instruments of all time (glockenspiel and banjo. what a rebel)

It takes about thirty seconds for Brooke to spot her next perfect target.
It’s usually about simple math, a quick judge of character. Who sticks out just enough that it’s apparent they don’t come often, but not so much that they know it and would call Brooke out. Someone who knows the rough norms, but doesn’t care enough to follow them. Someone who’ll be just in and out , or who goes to the library solely as a place to pass time, not because they want to be there.
And this girl, well, this girl fits the bill to a T.
The girl is in shorts and a tank top–given that it’s about thirty-five degrees outside, and this is a neighbourhood where most apartments don’t have AC, it means the girl is probably one of those people looking for a cool place to go in the summer. Second, she comes in popping her gum and with music blasting through her earphones, meaning she either doesn’t know or doesn’t care for library etiquette. And when she walks up to the counter, she plunks down about five thin books, which likely means she reads to kill time, and probably doesn’t care too much for returning individual books before their due dates, as opposed to piling them up for whenever it’s convenient.
“I’d like to return these, please.” the girl smiles and bats her eyelashes, and Brooke smiles back warmly.
“Of course. Can I get your library card?”
It’s a shame; the girl is pretty, really pretty. Dazzlingly white teeth, round, dimples, and wide, friendly eyes all look back at Brooke, their owner looking at her expectantly, trustingly, even. But sometimes, the sweetest patrons make the easiest marks.
She grabs her scanner, scans the girl’s card, and begins to check in the books, her routine underway.
Check, click, beep, no problem.
The trick to a good con is to be unnoticeable. That’s why she started in the library–she’d been working there five years already, had her own system, designated scanner, computer, and accounts. She was so integrated into it, there was no way she could stick out in it.
Check, click, beep, no problem.
Take only little bits at a time. That was how it started, and that was the hardest thing to turn into a system; how much to take, from whom. How not to get caught. Every librarian on staff pockets late fees from time to time; when you’re a couple dollars short for lunch or you’ve forgotten your phone at home and need change for the payphone, the cashbox at the back of the customer service area is a tempting reserve. But that didn’t mean you could get greedy–you had to be sneaky, had to be covert. A target who wouldn’t fight, who would believe the late fees were theirs, in an amount that the til wouldn’t miss. Not too often, or people would suspect something. No, it was all a balancing game, one that took keen practice and cautious judgement.
Check, click–alarm.
Be quick with your hand. Brooke likes to use her own scanner, one she had outfitted with a trick button to trigger the flagging noise. She’d claimed the computer at the end of the line as her preferred one, making sure no one could see her screen. She wears long sleeves to pocket the change in. When she flags someone’s book, she mashes buttons on her keyboard quickly, programs in a believable, yet still somewhat inflated amount for the fine. Two, three dollars maybe, and put a small portion of that in the cashbox just to ward off suspicion.
Check, click–alarm.
Same thing, over and over, and then she moves on. That’s the most important rule, after all.
Never stay on one target too long.
Check, click, beep, no problem.
“So it looks like you have two fines.” Brooke puts down her scanner in its place right next to her computer, always within her view, handle down so and back to her so that no one can see the trick alarm button on it. “Late fees.”
“Late fees?” the woman’s eyebrows shoot up in surprise, her voice pointed. “What you talkin’ ‘bout, Mary?”
“Two of your books are late. These two.” she turns her computer and points at the two books, looking back at the woman smugly, and that’s when she realizes her mistake.
“I took those out only a week ago. Your computer’s broke,” the woman crosses her arms stubbornly. “‘Cause I should have three weeks to return them.”
Oh, fuck. Brooke turns the monitor back towards herself and takes a sharp breath in, trying to swallow the panic that’s quickly bubbling up in her chest, making her heart beat faster. The woman–Vanessa, Brooke sees when she glances down at the woman’s library card to see who she’s dealing with–is right. The books were only taken out a week ago. Brooke had underestimated her and gotten cocky.
It’s alright; it’s alright. She’s been caught like this before. She’s been challenged like this before. That’s the advantage of her system; if things go south, she can always blame the computer.
“Okay, I’ll strike the fees.” she forces her voice to stay light despite herself, despite the adrenaline coursing through her that’s making her whole body buzz. “Sorry about that; the computer must be off.”
“Yeah.” Vanessa eyes Brooke up and down, but there’s no suspicion in her eyes, only amusement. “That’s alright.”
Vanessa swipes her card back, then turns around to leave, and Brooke breathes out, thinking it’s over, when suddenly, the smaller girl turns back around.
“Say, what’s your name, Mary?”
“Lynn.” Brooke lies.
“No it’s not.” Vanessa grins, the amusement in her eyes turning into a full-blown, mischievous sparkle.
“It’s not.” Brooke admits, chuckling a little despite herself. As terrifying as it is, God, this woman is good.
“I’m not askin’ ‘cause I’m gonna tell.” Vanessa shakes her head, her voice barely above a whisper as she leans in conspiratorially. “I’m askin’ ‘cause I wanna know for personal reasons.” she winks, and that’s when Brooke understands. She’s not dealing with anyone right now. No, she’s dealing with a professional.  
Fuck.
“Brooke.” she admits, “My name is Brooke.”
“Alright, miss Brooke.” Vanessa nods, “I’m Vanessa, but you already knew that, ain’t you?”
Brooke doesn’t say anything else, only nods, feeling her mouth go dry.
It’s only after Vanessa flounces away that Brooke looks down on the counter and realizes that Vanessa’s left a scrap of paper behind.
A due date reminder slip for the two books Brooke had flagged, with a phone number scrawled on the back.
Vanessa has had her eye on Brooke for a while. She’s not the typical mark–she works in a library, for God’s sake, that’s not exactly big-bucks material. But she’s tall, and blonde, and there’s something about her that says she’s got more going on than Vanessa realizes.
Which means that at the very least, she’s someone that Vanessa can have fun with, if not draw in and use.
Vanessa’s by no means an amateur at this game. She’s been going in and out of it since she was in college, ever since she had bills to pay for the first time and job interviews she’d need fancy clothes for. After that, well, it was a bit of a habit–she’d acquired a taste for luxury, and a need for adrenaline, and her modus operandi suited both.
Find a girl who was just barely upper-class–not so rich she’d be suspicious, not so poor she’d be seriously impacted by Vanessa’s scam, and take her out for a few drinks. Get to know her. Play the bimbo. Forget her wallet a few times, just as a test to see how the girl would react. Then start asking for library late fees. A few dollars here and there, maybe once per month, just enough to pad her pockets for a few extra splurges at the mall when the mood struck. Then the bigger things–after enough late fees, enough time building up her image as a bookworm, the girls would usually start just buying her books, telling her this way she wouldn’t have to worry about fees. Not the most extravagant gifts, but ones that she could sell for a decent turnaround to college students looking to complete their class reading lists. That was the game, after all; never taking enough to raise suspicion, but just enough that she could walk into Pandora after each breakup and buy herself something nice for her troubles.
Besides, there was usually some decent sex to be had out of it, too.
So when she saunters up to Brooke after a week of watching unnoticed, ready to figure out the woman’s secret, find something she can exploit, she’s even more surprised than she thought she’d be.
Brooke’s skills are rough, that’s for sure. But she has potential. And Vanessa could use some potential on her team.
It’s only about two hours before she gets the text she’s been waiting for.
Hey, it’s Brooke.
She saves the number immediately, grinning to herself.
V: well hey miss Brooke
V: how u doin?
B: lol
B: I’m fine, thanks, you?
V: peachy.
There’s a pause, and Vanessa can’t help but wonder what Brooke is thinking, what her next move is going to be.
B: so why did you pick me?
Vanessa whistles, her grin widening further. Maybe she had underestimated Brooke after all; smarts aside, this chick is bold.
V: I like a girl who can stay on my level.
Another pause, and Vanessa holds her breath, her confidence dimming just a little.
B: I’ve seen Focus already. I know what you’re trying to do.  
B: I work alone and you’re not getting any cut.  
Vanessa’s grin fades completely, cockiness replaced with frustration and, she has to admit, just a tinge of anger. If it’s going to be like that, then it’s going to be like that–but she’ll be damned if she lets anyone call her out on shit, especially shit she had only half-planned to pull.
V: Fine.  
V: But if you’re gonna work alone, at least don’t try to judge a mark by the length of their shorts. It’s the middle of August, bitch. IQ don’t come with air conditioning.  
She tosses her phone onto her kitchen table and rockets up to grab herself a glass of water, still fuming once she settles down and grabs the book across from her, hoping an old favourite like Coraline will get Brooke out of her head.
It doesn’t, and so before she can even finish her chapter, she’s picked up her phone again, staring at the message on the screen in disbelief.
B: Fair point
B: Thanks for the tip.  
Brooke is three beers deep at a coworker’s birthday party about a week later when she sees Vanessa stalking towards her from across the bar.
“This coincidence, or are you some kind of mastermind?” she sneers as Vanessa sidles up next to her, but the shorter woman only rolls her eyes.
“Coincidence, bitch. You ain’t that special.” her voice has a drunken lilt to it, and Brooke can tell she’s tipsy, that she’s got a good amount of liquid courage under her belt. That’s fine; so does does she. “Just wanted to say hi.”
“Hi.” Brooke snorts, and Vanessa rolls her eyes.
“Oh, Christ.” Vanessa sighs exasperatedly. “Look, Brooke, I barely suggested anything to you. You ain’t want it. Whatever. I ain’t out here to try and steal your thunder, we still run in different circles and your gig don’t have to be mine.”
“So why did you come over here, then?” Brooke eyes the shorter woman up and down, unconvinced. Vanessa wouldn’t have stuck her neck out like that if she wasn’t serious, if there wasn’t something motivating, something absolutely irresistible in it for her.
“‘Cause you may not want to work together, but you still sexy, mami.” Vanessa cocks an eyebrow, and Brooke can’t help but laugh.
“So let me get this straight. You wanted to work with me, now you want to sleep with me?” for all Brooke’s incredulity, though, Vanessa doesn’t seem even remotely shaken.
“I told you, I like a girl who can stay on my level.”
“Well, level yourself.” Brooke rolls her eyes. She’s just about to get up, just about to walk away, when a hand on her wrist stops her.
“Look, mami, I know I fucked up. I know I look like some kinda ass. But I seen the way you look at me. I know we got chemistry, and I know we both lookin’ for somethin’ better to do tonight than sitting here drinking lukewarm beer.”
Vanessa’s right; Brooke had been thinking of leaving, and truth be told, the longer Vanessa sits in front of her, the more seriously she’s considering Vanessa’s offer. It can’t be helped, not really–Vanessa’s smart , and bold, the exact kind of challenge that Brooke likes in a woman. She can tell she’s going to be a fun time already, and that’s before Brooke gets a good look at her, before she trails her eyes over Vanessa’s body one more time and sees everything that she failed to pay proper attention to the first time she saw her in the library. High cheekbones; dazzling teeth. A waist that has to be cinched, there’s no other explanation for how nice it is. And a bemused, plump-lipped smile that says that Vanessa knows exactly what Brooke is thinking, exactly what she’s about to say, and can’t wait to hear it.
She says a quick goodbye to her coworkers and rushes out of the bar on Vanessa’s heels, her stomach doing flip-flops and her body pulsing with a new sort of adrenaline and urgency that rivals even the thrill of getting away with a particularly hefty con.
Vanessa takes Brooke back to her place, mostly because Brooke insists on it—even with her tongue down Vanessa’s throat, she makes a show of her mistrust, whispering against Vanessa’s jawline that she’d better not try to steal anything.
It’s not like you’d have anything to steal. Vanessa bites back the retort, forces herself not to break whatever fragile, frenzied game they’ve got going. It’s a task that proves easier than Vanessa thought it would; all it takes is a couple of soft, sucking kisses to the nape of Brooke’s neck and the blonde melts, unable to form any words beyond more, more, Vanessa, please, more.
That’s more like it. Vanessa moves her hands slowly up Brooke’s body, taking her time to feel out every spot that makes her gasp, shiver, or whine, or all of the above, in the case of when Vanessa moves a hand up to Brooke’s neck, positions her grip in a V shape and presses down just lightly, just enough to make Brooke feel Vanessa right against her carotid arteries. Not enough to choke; just enough to command, to show her who’s in charge.
By the time they reach Vanessa’s apartment, scrambling to the elevator and hitting the wall to continue kissing and stroking and rutting against each other, Brooke is incoherent, and Vanessa is almost disappointed; she had really expected Brooke to challenge her a little more, try to talk back or regain control. Instead, Brooke is putty in her hands, flushed and breathless by the time the elevator arrives on Vanessa’s floor and they’re stumbling towards her door.
It’s only after Vanessa’s led Brooke towards the bedroom, though, that she remembers that Brooke is full of surprises.
“Whoops!” Brooke flips them around right as they’re about to fall onto the bed, throwing her weight enough so that Vanessa doesn’t have time to correct their positions before she hits the mattress, Brooke following on top of her.
“That’s more like it.” Brooke grins. She kisses Vanessa quickly on the lips, then starts to work her way down over Vanessa’s neck, marking it up with her teeth in a way that almost makes Vanessa forget everything around her except the feeling of Brooke’s mouth on her skin, licking and sucking and moving towards her collarbone. She brings a hand up to Brooke’s back, rakes her nails over it hard enough that she knows the blonde will feel it through her shirt, and it’s only when Brooke lets out an almost pitiful gasp at the sensation that Vanessa remembers who she is, what she’s doing, what she really wants.
Really, it’s Brooke’s fault for forgetting to pin Vanessa down; or maybe she’s just so used to winning, it’s never occurred to her. Either way, when Brooke’s mouth lifts from Vanessa’s chest, the smaller woman takes her chance to push her off and over onto the bed, once again flipping their positions. She’s careful to pin down Brooke’s wrists and box her in with her legs, scanning the older woman’s face for any signs of displeasure or worse, distress, but Brooke only smiles, relaxing a little, and Vanessa realizes that that’s exactly the reaction Brooke was trying to get all along.
“Brat.” Vanessa laughs, nipping Brooke’s neck and smiling at Brooke’s surprised yelp. “Your parents ain’t teach you to just ask for things you want?”
“If they did, then we wouldn’t have met.” Brooke smirks, and Vanessa has to hand it to her; she has a point.
“Cheeky bitch.” she hums before capturing Brooke’s lips in a kiss, one that finally melts any remaining tension between them, becoming soft and slow and thorough, almost exploratory. Vanessa lets go of Brooke’s wrists in favour of cupping her face, and this time, Brooke doesn’t fight–only lets her hands roam up Vanessa’s legs, over her thighs, coming to cup and squeeze the flesh of her ass over her skirt.
“You should take this off.” she breathes into Vanessa’s lips, and she’s right, it’s too damn hot, too damn uncomfortable, too damn in the way. They separate only long enough for Vanessa to shimmy out of her skirt and take her shirt off before coming back together, Vanessa’s hands stopping Brooke from pulling off her own dress.
“Let me do it.” she whispers, tracing her fingers over the hem, and this time, Brooke doesn’t fight. She only nods, lifting her arms to allow Vanessa to take her dress off and then ease her back on the bed, their bodies warm and pressed together.
After one last kiss, soft and sweet against Brooke’s jaw, Vanessa leans back, traces her eyes over every inch of Brooke’s body in an attempt to decide where she should start. It’s a task that proves incredibly difficult; truth be told, there isn’t an inch of Brooke that Vanessa doesn’t want to worship, not a single detail about her that isn’t worth extra attention. So Vanessa starts with a hand in her hair, not pulling but holding, feeling, letting the soft strands tickle against her fingers as she traces her other hand over the soft, sweat-sheened skin of Brooke’s chest, grabbing and kneading her breast through her bra.
“I, um–I actually–Sorry, but–” Brooke starts, and Vanessa rockets up, hands away, heart pounding.
“Are you okay? Did I hurt you? Do you want to stop?”
“No.” Brooke shakes her head, and to Vanessa’s relief, she smiles, her eyes sparkling. “It’s just that this bra isn’t great for that, the underwire’s kinda stiff. Can you give me a sec to take it off?”
That’s it? Vanessa gives a relieved laugh, lifting herself off of Brooke long enough for the other woman to shimmy out of her bra. “Jesus, I was afraid I hurt you or something.”
“Hey, don’t laugh!” Brooke whines, swatting at Vanessa’s stomach playfully. It’s a gesture that earns her two hands on her wrists, pinning her down again as Vanessa grins.
“Listen, don’t worry about that, okay?” Vanessa kisses Brooke again, soft and reassuring. “I know plenty other ways to make you feel good.”
“Then show me.” Brooke’s eyes are hooded, her pupils wide with need. It’s tantalizing, but it doesn’t mean that Vanessa will just give things up–no, that would be to easy, not nearly enough fun.
“Only if you’re patient.” she smirks, and before Brooke can protest, she’s kissing her way down the blonde’s body again, stroking the inside of her thighs and smiling into Brooke’s skin when the older woman squirms.
“You want my hands or my mouth?” she asks, when she reaches the waistband of Brooke’s underwear, running a single finger down Brooke’s slit and shivering at how easily it glides, how slick and wet Brooke is even through the far-too-thick cotton fabric.
“Mouth, please…” she pants, and Vanessa doesn’t hold back any longer.
“Get up,” she instructs, licking her lips, “And take those off. I want you to sit on my face.”
Brooke doesn’t argue or make a show of stripping–only rushes to peel off her underwear before clambouring on top of Vanessa and eases down where Vanessa’s hands guide her to go, gasping with relief as Vanessa finally brings her mouth home, licking a stripe up Brooke’s slit all the way to her clit. It doesn’t take long–only a few minutes of licking, sucking, and grazing with her teeth, and soon, Brooke’s moans are becoming shorter, more high pitched, more desperate and frequent, and then she’s coming, barely keeping herself up as Vanessa continues to suck down on her clit through her orgasm. By the time she’s finally collapsing down next to Vanessa, still shaking, still breathless, Vanessa can tell she’s completely spent and sated, ready to sleep rather than go for a second round.
If it were anyone else, Vanessa would have been pissed, felt like it was unfair; but now, cradling Brooke in her arms, kissing her forehead like it’s familiar territory she’s kissed hundreds of times before, she finds herself completely satisfied.

Hearthstone: The Best Scholomance Academy Cards

Earlier this year, the Hearthstone team kicked off the game’s Year of the Phoenix with the release of the phenomenal Ashes of Outland expansion. Both that expansion and the name of the game’s current content year sent a clear message that the Hearthstone team is looking to restore the CCG to glory in the minds of those who may have walked away over the years.
That brings us to Scholomance Academy. The recently revealed second Hearthstone expansion of the year looks to pick up where Ashes of Outland left off by changing the way that we play the game. Naturally, that means introducing a series of new cards.
So join us as we take a look at the best Scholomance Academy cards and help you decide which cards you should try out as soon as the expansion launches on August 6.
Vectus
As a well-stated, neutral card with an effect that’s almost always valuable at any point in the game, Vectus checks just about every box we use to judge whether a Hearthstone card will actually see regular play in the game’s competitive meta.
Even if the minions Vectus summons don’t gain your preferred Deathrattle effect, this card will almost always end up being valuable whenever you play it as long as the summoned whelps gain some kind of Deathrattle effect. Only the most aggressive decks will be able to consistently counter this card.
Sphere of Sapience
While it’s true that Sphere of Sapience isn’t the kind of card that wins you a game outright, you have to respect a card that is always valuable in every type of Hearthstone match imaginable.
For the low cost of one mana, Sphere of Sapience gives you four second chances you’d otherwise never get. It allows you to slightly decrease the chances of a bad draw costing you the game. We’re curious to see what kind of decks ultimately value this card the most, but it’s certainly a potential game-changer.
Lorekeeper Polkelt
It’s not an exaggeration to say that Lorekeeper Polkelt is one of the most exciting, unique, and potentially dangerous cards in Hearthstone history.
While this card will immediately be valued by slower decks that look to draw their big cards as soon as possible, the real potential here comes from combo decks which can exploit this ability with devastating results. Either way, someone will figure out how to maximize the potential of Lorekeeper Polkelt.
Doctor Krastinov
There’s another five mana card in Hearthstone that gives your weapon +1/+1 when it’s played (Captain Greenskin) and it has regularly seen play ever since Hearthstone’s closed beta days
As such, there’s really no reason to suspect that Doctor Krastinov won’t eventually find a home in competitive decks. It’s an efficient way for Warriors and Rogues to add stats to their weapons, and Krastinov’s Rush ability even means they won’t immediately lose tempo just by playing this already valuable card.
Shan’do Wildclaw
This card hasn’t been getting a lot of love recently, and that seems to be because nobody is sure how many beasts you can put into a deck while remaining competitive.
However, I’d argue that’s a greedy way to look at this card. Even if the +1/+1 doesn’t hit every minion in your deck, you can help ensure it hits valuable minions. Besides, this card’s low cost, moderate stats, and potentially devastating secondary effect mean that it doesn’t have to hit a home run in order to win you the game.
Headmaster Kel’Thuzad
Truth be told, I think this card is a little too expensive to consistently be used in potentially devastating combos. That variance in value could eventually limit its reliability.
Even if you’re not able to consistently get the maximum value out of this card, though, being able to trigger its effect once or more per match will almost certainly swing the momentum to your side. Those “YouTube-worthy” uses of this card may not happen often, but even modest applications of Headmaster Kel’Thuzad’s ability will have an impact.
Glide
We understand if a quick look at this card doesn’t immediately reveal why it’s so dangerous. After all, why would you want to help your opponent refresh their hand?
How many times in a game would you really want to shuffle your entire hand into your deck, though? This card’s secondary effect will infuriate opponents who are either holding on to specific cards or are holding on to a full hand of cards. We have a feeling Glide will be an aggressive player’s new best friend.
Lab Partner
Every Hearthstone expansion, there are several cards that don’t initially look that exciting but end up being very powerful. We think that Lab Partner is one of Scholomance Academy’s best examples of such a card.
Even if Mages weren’t getting a few new reasons to run spell damage cards in their deck, the prospect of a one-mana spell damage card with good stats is one of those seemingly simple things that Hearthstone’s designers have strayed away from in the past due to the way such a card could easily end up being overpowered. We’re about to see what the true power level of such a card really is.
Soul Fragment
Soul Fragment isn’t actually a collectible card. Instead, it’s a token that several new Scholomance Academy cards can generate and shuffle into your deck when played.
As such, this entry is really a group entry for the entire Soul Fragment line-up. Cards that rely on Soul Fragments wield powerful effects that are useful in every type of Hearthstone game. If you’re able to shuffle enough Soul Fragments into your deck, you’re going to be very hard to beat.
Instructor Fireheart
Some of the most dangerous cards in Hearthstone history are those that open up the chance for “chain” plays. That basically means any card which generates some kind of value that you can chain into your next play.
Instructor Fireheart has the potential to be one of the best chain cards we’ve seen thus far. Spells are going to be even more useful than usual in Scholomance Academy, and this is the card that will fuel every other card that relies on spells for their full potential. Even on its own, this card is almost guaranteed to yield value.
Lightning Bloom
After spending a little time with this card during a Scholomance Academy preview event, I can safely confirm that it is incredibly powerful.
What you basically have to do is ignore Lightning Bloom’s Overload downside. It doesn’t matter. By the time you’re done making a big play with this (whether it be playing a big minion, activating a Spellburst effect, or completing a devastating combo), you’re probably going to be too busy winning the game to care about the lost mana.
Survival of the Fittest
It takes a lot for a 10 mana spell to have an impact on Hearthstone‘s metagame, but trust me when I say that Survival of the Fittest is going to be the star of your nightmares until further notice.
Cards like Lightning Bloom allow Druids to reach 10 mana faster than usual, and once they’ve played this card, they’ve basically started a countdown to victory. What really makes this card work is the +4/+4 to your minions on the board which helps ensure there is rarely a bad time to play this spell.
Secret Passage
In the history of Hearthstone there have been a few “Hail Mary” cards that you play in the hopes of finding an answer to a bad situation. Secret Passage may just be the best of those cards.
Actually, most “Last Chance” cards are based around the idea that you’ll likely lose if they don’t work. Secret Passage allows you to dig for the perfect answer for the low cost of 1 mana. Considering that you can put two of these into your deck, it’s actually a fairly reliable way to get yourself out of a jam or even with the game.
Voracious Reader
If I had to nominate a few candidates for a shortlist of Scholomance Academy cards most likely to be nerfed, Voracious Reader would be somewhere near the top of that last.
It’s impossible to overstate how good this card is. There has never been a more reliable neutral draw engine for aggressive decks. This single card may help ensure that aggressive players remain competitive even with all the great control decks being added to Hearthstone. I respect the Hearthstone team for taking a chance on a card like this, but it’s already pretty clear it’s going to be a problem.
Intrepid Initiate
Long-time Hearthstone players have probably already guessed that Intrepid Initiate is good fofr aggressive decks, but it’s actually much better than that.
With its low cost and easy-to-enable effect, Intrepid Initiate may just find its way into midrange and even control decks as well. It’s a surprisingly versatile card that you can make use of in all but the most unwinnable situations. There’s not much to this card at first glance, but it’s capable of helping you set the tempo for nearly every game.

Measuring Ketones: What, When, Why, and How
Keto is unique compared to other diets because there is an objective marker that tells you if you’re on the right track. With an easy at-home test, you can confirm that you are, in fact, in a state of ketosis.
Regular readers probably know I’m not a big data tracker. My energy, sleep, workout performance, stamina, and enjoyment of life tell me almost everything I need to know about how well I’m doing. Nevertheless, I get that some people love to play the self-quantification game. In some medical situations, measuring ketones is advisable, even necessary, as well. I’m not a total curmudgeon about it. Heck, I’ve been known to check in on my blood glucose and ketones from time to time.
If you’re thinking about testing, you should become familiar with the three different methods. Each has its own pros and cons. You’ll want to pick the option that’s right for you.

What Exactly Are You Measuring?
Let’s back up and do a quick refresher on ketogenic diets. These are any diets where carbohydrate intake is restricted below about 50 grams of total carbs per day. When you restrict carbs, you are really restricting how much glucose the body has to meet its energy needs. Without much glucose coming in, the body needs an alternative fuel source, especially for the brain, which doesn’t run well on fat. That fuel source is ketones.
The liver produces ketones from fatty acids when insulin levels are low and liver glycogen (stored glucose) becomes depleted. This happens when you follow a very-low-carb diet, fast, or engage in sustained exercise.
When your liver is producing measurable amounts of ketones, you are said to be in ketosis. This is not to be confused with ketoacidosis, a potentially fatal medical emergency. Keto diets don’t lead to ketoacidosis because the body has a safeguard that prevents ketone levels from becoming dangerously high: insulin. When ketones rise, the pancreas releases insulin, which in turn hinders the release of fatty acids from stored body fat. Fewer fatty acids in the bloodstream mean less substrate (material) for the liver to turn into ketones.
This feedback mechanism keeps ketone levels in safe ranges unless your body can’t produce insulin. Individuals with type 1 diabetes and very advanced type 2 diabetes are at risk for developing ketoacidosis for this reason. Diabetics often monitor their ketones to make sure they are within safe ranges.
For the rest of us, measuring ketones is just a way of checking whether or not we are actually in a state of ketosis. We might want to know that for a number of reasons, discussed later.
Meet The Ketones
In ketogenesis, fatty acids are metabolized in the liver to create ketone bodies. The primary ketone body is acetoacetate (AcAc), which can convert into beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). AcAc also spontaneously breaks down into a third ketone body, acetone.
The body primarily uses AcAc and BHB for energy. Although acetone can be converted into pyruvate, it’s generally considered a waste product.
How to Test Ketones at Home
There are three ways to test your ketones at home:
Urine test strips, which measure AcAc
Blood tests, which measure BHB
Breath tests, which measure acetone
Urine Ketone Test Strips
How it works:
You can purchase urine ketone test strips online or in many pharmacies. They are cheap, costing only pennies per strip. Don’t confuse them with urine pH strips.
Simply collect your urine in a sample cup or pee directly on the strip. After a set time—usually 15 seconds, but some strips take longer—the end of the strip will change color. Compare the color on the strip to the key on the package to get your ketosis level. Rather than giving you an exact readout, the color tells you if your urine does not register any AcAc, or if it shows low, medium, or high levels.
It’s straightforward but not foolproof. For one, if you let the strip sit for too long before you interpret the results, the test can be inaccurate. Urine strips also tend to overestimate the amount of AcAc present and can give false positives.1 2 Results can be affected by how well hydrated you are, too.
Although urine tests are shown to correlate decently well with blood and breath tests in diabetics3 and people new to the keto diet,4 AcAc in the urine is considered “spillover.” When you first start a keto diet, your cells aren’t great at utilizing ketones, so some get excreted. You’re measuring ketones the liver made but the body can’t use. As you become more keto-adapted, there should be less spillover.
Most keto dieters do find that their urine ketones decline over time. That’s a good thing, indicating less waste; but it also means the urine tests become less useful. It’s very common for experienced keto dieters to have low or no measurable ketones in their urine despite having plenty in their bloodstreams.

Blood Tests for Ketones
How it works:
Blood tests measure the level of BHB in the bloodstream. This is considered the gold standard in ketone testing. They require an initial investment in a meter, plus ongoing purchases of test strips. You also need a lancing device and sterile lancets to prick your finger and draw a droplet of blood. If you’re planning on testing several times a day, it can get expensive fast, not to mention your sore fingertips.
The two most popular meters in the U.S. are the Keto Mojo() and Precision Xtra. Both also measure blood glucose, but you need separate test strips. The Precision Xtra meter runs around $25 depending on where you purchase it. Ketone test strips cost about $1.20 each, and glucose test strips about $0.65.
You can get a Keto Mojo starter kit on the company’s website that includes the meter, lancing device, 10 lancets, 10 ketone test strips, 10 glucose test strips, and a travel case for $59.99. Additional ketone test strips cost $49.50 for a 50-pack. Glucose test strips are $14.99 for a 50-pack. They also offer a Bluetooth connector for $9.95 that allows you to upload your test results to an app.
Understanding blood test results:
Your meter will give you a reading of 0 or “Lo” if you aren’t in ketosis. On a typical keto diet, you might be anywhere from 0.3 to around 2.0 mmol (millimole). Fasting and exercise can each drive BHB up to 4.0 mmol or higher. Ketoacidosis occurs above 10 mmol.
In The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living, renowned researchers Jeff Volek and Stephen Phinney proposed that ketosis begins at 0.5 mmol. The designated 1.0 to 2.5 mmol as the “optimal ketone zone.” Don’t get too hung up on these numbers, though. Some individuals produce high levels of ketones on a normal keto diet, while others barely register any unless they fast or use exogenous ketones (which contain BHB). I have friends who have been strictly keto for years and consistently hover around 0.3 or 0.4 mmol. We don’t really understand why these individual differences exist. I’ve offered some hypotheses, but it’s still a bit of a mystery.
Anyway, higher numbers don’t mean that you’re doing better than the next person. In certain medical situations, such as for seizure control, high BHB levels are desirable. For the average person doing keto for weight loss or general wellness, there’s no evidence that it makes a big difference. More recently, Phinney and Volek have started to talk about the “effective therapeutic range”—where you can expect to reap benefits from being in ketosis—as being anywhere between 0.5 and 4.0 mmol.5

Ketone Breath Tests
How it works:
Breath tests measure acetone. Like AcAc and BHB, acetone travels in the bloodstream. The molecules are small enough to diffuse into the lungs, where they are exhaled. This is why some people develop the distinctive fruity or metallic smell also known as keto breath.
Breath meters measure acetone in parts per million (ppm). Everyone, no matter their diet, exhales a small amount of acetone. The average non-keto dieter might only register 1 ppm. Someone following a keto diet would normally have up to about 40 ppm. Fasting can drive breath acetone up to around 170 ppm. Ketoacidosis is indicated by breath acetone concentrations of 1,250 ppm.6
Breath acetone does reliably correlate with blood BHB. Multiple studies also show that acetone readings are correlated with weight loss when participants follow a calorie-restricted diet.7 This doesn’t mean that higher breath acetone readings somehow cause weight loss, though.
Acetone readings go up when the body is burning more fat, that’s true. That’s why they also go up after exercise, when the body is tapping into fat stores for energy. However, these devices can’t distinguish whether you’re burning body fat or the fat from your plate. Participants in these studies were burning body fat because they were in an energy deficit. Depending on how much fat you eat, you can maintain or even gain weight on a keto diet. Ketosis never guarantees body fat loss, no matter how you measure your ketones.
The biggest upside to breath testing is that once you have the meter, you can test as many times as you want each day for no additional cost per test. This is great for people who want to test multiple times per day.
Devices:
Although breath testing does seem promising, there’s a catch. The research studies I reviewed all used mass spectrometry-based devices. These are sophisticated pieces of equipment that you won’t have at home. While there are quite a few handheld devices available online, it’s not clear how accurate they are.
The most popular device seems to be the Ketonix(R), which starts at $79. You blow into the device, which looks like a pen, and the ketone reading syncs with an app on your phone. Reviews suggest that it can take a while for the app to connect to the device and that it’s glitchy, so do your homework before purchasing. There is also the considerably more expensive LEVL device (prices aren’t currently listed on their website). In addition to the up-front cost, LEVL requires monthly sensor replacements that aren’t cheap, and it’s more finicky to use.
Pros:

Unlimited tests once you own the device
Cons:
Questions about accuracy and efficacy of home-use devices
Not reliable if you’ve recently consumed alcohol
When to Test
There’s no right or wrong time to test. For general tracking, the most important thing is that you test around the same time each day. Try to keep conditions the same, too. Ketone levels are affected by time of day, how recently you ate and what you ate, exercise, and a number of other factors. Don’t test right after a meal one day, at the end of a 16-hour fasting period the next day, and after a 10-mile run on the third day.
I think it makes the most sense to test first thing in the morning or at bedtime. If you consistently break your overnight fast at the same time, you can also test right before eating.
If you’re looking for high ketone readings to stay motivated, test at night. A test of 12 healthy men and women found that both blood and urine measurements were lowest at 10 a.m., following breakfast 8 Blood tests were otherwise fairly steady throughout the day, with a modest decline in the afternoon. Urine tests showed higher ketones as the day progressed, also with a small mid-afternoon dip. The highest levels occurred before bed, at 10 p.m.
Do You Need to Test?
No, but there are some reasons you might want to.
As I said up top, those using a ketogenic diet therapeutically might need to track ketone levels. For certain conditions like epilepsy, patients might aim for ketone levels of 4.0 mmol or higher.9 Some folks also monitor their glucose-ketone index (GKI). This ratio reflects the relative availability of the two fuels and is especially used in cancer treatment.10 A blood BHB measurement is required to calculate GKI.
You might want to track your ketones if you’re running an n=1 experiment. Maybe you want to see what happens when you eat more protein or carbs, or you’re gauging your reactions to certain foods.11 Athletes might test their ketones to dial in their fueling strategy.
I’ve also had readers tell me that tracking their ketones helps them stay motivated. That’s great as long as tracking doesn’t add stress or anxiety to your life. If you can absorb the information impartially, go for it. If a low ketone reading is going to send you into an emotional tailspin, it’s not worth it. Testing is not exact anyway. There’s always a margin of error.
Just remember that whether you’re trying to lose weight, live to 120, reduce inflammation, or whatever else, your diet is only one of many factors that play into your success. Chasing high ketones is almost never necessary. I know some people swear that they feel better above a certain level. If it’s true that they can feel a noticeable difference, though, they shouldn’t need to test for confirmation. Aim for a feeling, not a number.
Most of all, don’t let the results of any ketone test take precedence over your subjective experience. If you are firing on all cylinders—sleeping great, positive mood, lots of energy, feeling strong—who cares what your blood BHB is?
All that said, if you’re going to track ketones, I say don’t bother with the urine strips unless you’re only going to test for the first few weeks. If you’re planning on making it a regular thing, go ahead and invest in a blood meter. They seem to be more reliable than handheld breath meters at this point. They also measure blood glucose, which can be useful for a variety of reasons. If you don’t want to track, that’s fine too. It’s always an option later if you want more information.
