The Sitter (1977)
"You've really scared me! Is that what you wanted? Is that what you wanted?"
#the sitter#short film#horror film#1977#lucia stralser#curt sanders#karen kondan#bill striglos#ed ruffalo#sally taylor#bob sutton#charles boswell#fred walton#close up of eyes#this is the film that would ultimately become when a stranger calls#and it is helpfully included on the new blu ray release of that film#as i understand it this was basically reshot verbatim as the first twenty minutes of when a stranger#which in turn has become held up as one of the greatest opening scenes in all of horror cinema#inspiring the opening of scream amongst others#i haven't watched stranger yet i thought i'd start with this#it's a brilliant short film. adapting the famous urban legend of the babysitter and the phonecalls is a genius move#because it's all suspense and nothing shown. presumably this cost next to nothing to make. but its genuinely frightening#walton proves himself a savvy director with a good understanding of how sound and lighting can be used to ramp up the tension#in the final scenes as the caller makes his move all we see are lights come on upstairs and a shadow begin to appear#but its terrifying. less really is more sometimes.#the horror genre is particularly suited to the short film format. especially psychological horror with an emphasis on mood and suspense#over gore and effects. this is a brilliant example of how to make a short film that really hits the mark.#all the more impressive when you consider that almost everyone must know the story by now#and know exactly where this is going. and yet it's executed so well that it doesn't matter that you know the twists#you're strung along all the same
