On one hand: you don't really need a reason to not watch a movie/show or play a game, and people going "how come you haven't watched <insert show name here>?" just make me not want to talk about movies at all.
On the other hand: as someone who regularly plays video games which are as old as I am, I find this remark bizarre, as it's not like movies, shows or video games have an expiration date.
I'm not gonna watch utena bro that shit old as hell
#this is a general comment#not specifically about Utena#as for Utena: I watched it like 10 years ago and it felt incredibly pretentious#and in many aspects it's about ~~symbolism~~#and the author's like 'you have to dig out my intentions through all the symbols I put there'#and therefore makes the author immune to all criticism because if you dislike something about it#you clearly did not understand the symbolism - should have digged in deeper#in many aspects it's similar to neon genesis evangelion here with its fanbase#though I have to give it credit that it does not blast to the viewer the intent of each character#Utena in ep 2 says outloud 'yeah I don't really care about losing or winning this match'#while 20s later we see her literally fighting for her life in order to win#and like: the character lying about their intentions - what a revolutionary idea /s#stripped out of symbolism - to me Utena is about abuse and systems of abuse the abusers create and maintain#and the higher in hierarchy you are the more interest you have in maintaining them#and therefore more eager to do outright evil shit#and also the flaws of participating within the system in order to destroy it#the middle arc featuring a pink-haired antagonist guy seems to be intended for#revealing backstories for all the other characters and overall motivations they have#which is good if you are interested in these#I personally wanted them all to trip on their shoelaces while they were walking downstairs
