THROWING SOME SONIC HEADCANONS ON U

Sonic

-He always has a bruise or scratch on him somewhere even if he hasnt fought eggman in a few days. there. is. always. one.

-He's also COVERED in scars. Theyre either covered up by his fur/quills or theyve faded over the years.

-When sonic showers he uses a bottle that can be used for shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, moisturiser, mascara, ketchup, pepsi and a microwave.

-Sonic only really likes physical touch like hugging when he's seriously injured or in pain (example A. sonic prime and frontiers). Also he doesnt mind it when he's doing it to someone else.

-Sonic paces when he's worried, thinking or waiting for something. (Shadow does this too just less)

-Sonic fidgets in his sleep a LOT. He'll falls asleep on his back and wake up with his legs half off the bed and the duvet on the floor.

-Sonic cant cook so he gets tails to make him dinner (he knows how to make chilli dogs tho dw)

-Sonic used to hum tails to sleep when there was a storm

-This ties in with the one before it. SONIC IS A FANTASTIC SINGER. This man is angelic. Also no one can tell me Rouge can't sing coz she defo can.

-Sonic has a draw of all the stuff from his past adventures (chips bracelet, this upgrades from sa2, etc.)

-He smells like man deodorant (Lynx)

Shadow

-He takes notes on how to be a ''real mobian'' since he was brought up on the ARK he doesnt really know how to fit in so he'll stalk sonic and take in how he acts.

-Shadow and Rouge have ''girl nights'' where they stay up, do face masks, eat pizza and watch movies. Just a sleepover pretty much. (Omega is sometimes involved to)

-Shadow sleeps like a vampire

-Shadow and sonic spar often (3-4 days a week)

-And if sonic doesnt show up to the sparing session he'll go find him and make sure he's ok that they are still sparing

-His bedroom is lit up by lamps, no big light at all just lamps and the window.

-He's INSANELY good at cooking and baking. Gordon ramsey ahh hedgehog

-Can speak every language fluetly, this includes few ones that are dead (this is smt gerald gave him when he was in the 'creation' sage oin the ARK)

-He smells fucking fantastic 24/7. Lavendar, rlly nice perfume (probably Rouge's), deodarant, anything! This man smells great.

-He has a really low spice tolerance, one SPECK of spice and this dude is like sonic in tmosth.

-He gets bothered by Rouge trying to steal the master emerald at least once a week.

-Works out everyday, maxes out the machines and just goes at it like it's at the lowest setting.

-Sometimes he'll ask if sonic wants to spar for the fun of it if he's not on Angel island.

the process of putting together a supercut, of rewriting and reimagining an (artificially) positive version of a particular storyline, is eerily similar to what tony blair does in every aspect of his life. this is especially noticeable when it comes to his relationship with gordon though — he rarely goes into detail as to just how ugly their interactions were, and his public statements about why they grew apart are always imbued with soulless language about “professional” and “political” disagreements, rather than any honesty about the deep personal betrayal that was actually going on. plus, whenever tony does express any sense of anguish over the breakdown of the relationship, he’s always incredibly quick to defend his own behaviour (denying granita even happened… what the hell), erasing any responsibility he might bear. he is LITERALLY creating and playing a supercut, one which only has any traction in his own head.

journalists have written about new labour in 1997 being drenched in a certain magic, offering the public something to believe in. “gave” is past tense though, as the tbgb relationship began to deteriorate just months after getting into government, and newlab’s popularity would only dwindle as the years went on.

remember that one clip in the gq alastair campbell interview where tony refused to say he didn’t dream about gordon? yeah i remember it too, isn’t that funny!

two things to say here. one, tony can’t reach for gordon because they are not on speaking terms like whatsoever not even remotely. two, i truly think that tony has repeated his own version of events concerning gordon, both in his head and in public, so many times that he’s come to view them as reality — even if tony did interact with gordon properly, he would only be able to see the version of gordon that he’s created.

1994-2005 (ish), they wanted to reconcile and ease the tensions, but external pressures (teams around them, pressures of the jobs, emotional blockages etc) prevented them from truly fixing anything.

Tthese lyrics give me the impression that the speaker would twist themselves into any shape, fashion themselves into any persona, just to hold the attention of the person these lines are directed at. Very much reminds me of accounts re the 1994 leadership discussions, where it’s said that tony was promising gordon anything and everything to get him to swing behind him, then making similarly wild promises about succession later in government just to keep gordon playing the game. Also, it reminds me of that absolutely fucking awful (positive) rawnsley quote that goes something like “tony would cajole, plead, argue, rail against gordon”, just to get him to talk to him.

in my head, this section relates to his immediate post-pmship period, where he’s taking on international roles left and right to try and recreate the pure magic of newlab (and ultimately failing! lets’s not be dishonest here).

first line relates to the nonsense (very sensible accurate analysis) i was spinning about tony rewriting his and gordon’s history, erasing his own culpability and capacity for TREACHERY! the lines about calling… such an obvious parallel with the infamous three hour phone calls, the “endless circular conversations”, the screaming fits down the telephone line…….

this outro, although repeating lines i have already covered is actually very important to cover separately. the way that it just repeats itself, over and over and over and over, until the song finishes is actually incredibly aligned to tony’s mentality when it comes to tbgb. as i said earlier, i truly think that tony has repeated his own narrative regarding the way that he treated gordon — and his responsibility for how their relationship played out — enough times to view it as reality. he is insane and i understand him like nobody else.

I've been thinking; the fact that Barney says there's a "beating quota" really shows that Civil Protection doesn't need a reason to abuse the citizens, they'll do it anyway to "meet a quota" maybe it's something they themselves created for fun and everyone has to take part.

I think about the new Civil Protection recruits, how to prove their loyalty they probably have to do terrible things to those who were once their fellow citizen.

Isn't it fucked up that Barney didn't even sound shaken about that quota as he told Gordon about it? He says it so casually that it shows just how normal it has become for him. I wonder if they even know it's Barney behind that mask, someone they are meant to trust.

Those who join Civil Protection, Ig at first they feel bad but after a while it becomes the norm. They get that "better life" at the cost of their own humanity... So it's always a lose/lose situation for all the citizens. It doesn't matter what they do, they're always fucked one way or the other. Best to be fucked with your people tho, than be fucked with the enemy.

I thought it was a decent Dick story, and I loved that it had Babs and Tim as the supporting cast. It was good to see them back(mostly) in their 90s early 2000s element.

I thought that the A plot was better than the serial killer B plot-; it had a lot of personal connection for Dick without being about the Graysons and orcas(which are some of the most vicious and borderline cruel predators that terrify me to my core and it was really cool to see them get some use)- even if I didn't find the ending super satisfying.

I thought James was interesting, and his story was more linear but the addition of the Joker into the situation was kind of just...messy and not entirely necessary? It kind of killed it for me. Idk I might just have Joker fatigue. I did like the coloring and a good portion of the art better in that part of the story, tho. I thought the mood they set was really cool and a little scary.

My high points were all (unsurprisingly) character based:

But more mature. Watching them go from Dick mentoring Tim to them having a much more balanced relationship where Tim can fully have Dick's back has always been super satisfying and seeing it making a come back after their little fallout was cool

I also like the attention paid to the differences in Bruce and Dick's philosophy (specifically here:

) and the difficulty that Batman presents Dick because of it. Part of the appeal of Dick being Batman is the reluctance and the chunk of flesh it takes out of him and I think this story really got the tone of that right. He's making mistakes that he wouldn't normally, he's not sleeping; you can really tell that everything is getting to him. He feels like the walls are closing in on him with no way out (sometimes literally) and it makes the whole story kind of..weary? It's as much man vs man as it is man vs self. Love that many of the action sequences in the book happen in enclosed places that have an unstoppable deadly force converging on him with no way out and how that emphasizes the theme

There's like... a debate on whether Dick plans or if he acts on instinct and I like the way that this breaks it down to: yes, he's planning from the start and if it seems like he isn't it's because that's what he wants you to think- but he understands that leaving space to bob and weave is a part of that process. Ultimate planner that is liable to start behaving erratically as fuck at any moment is such a fun look

It was meant to be a fic to start off though! With a completely different idea! But the longer I tried to plot it out, the more I got different Ideas for this current au and decided to scrap the first draft 😅

Its the basic plot of HLVRAI, except Benrey has always been a winged alien species.

In his more human form, he just (very very uncomfortably and at times painfully) keeps his wings under his uniform. Boss fight Benrey has a completely different form (spoilers for future wing au stuff I am still working on)

Fic would have started off a looong while after hlvrai, Benrey respawns in the middle of winter and wanders to Gordons house. Gordon finds him absolutely messed up (im a sucker for “benrey respawns with his final boss injuries and Gordon/science team has to help him heal” aus haha) and basically passing out in the snow, taking him in to help warm him up.

Gordon tends to Benreys wounds until he wakes and tries to keep him warm. Benrey begins complaining about being uncomfortable and needing to “stretch”, Gordon has no idea what in the world this means, but encourages Benrey to do so, mainly due to mostly forgiving Benrey and wanting to try to fix their relationship.

Wings reveal happens, Gordon tries to keep his calm but is also loosing his mind trying to comprehend that Benrey had this under his vest. The. Entire. Time.

Benreys wings are obviously very messed up. Gordon had a pet bird growing up who had issues preening itself, so he knows how to preen wings as well as a human could, so he helps Benrey fix up his wings. Gayness ensues :)

A Bruce Wayne x female cop being soulmates. 

I was too tired to reread and check all my English mistakes, sorry ! 

Y/N didn't ask to be transferred to the Gotham City Police Department.

Some of her former colleagues said it must have been a mission, because she was a good cop, talented and with integrity, the kind of cop that Gotham seemed to need. Others said it was a punishment, because she was too good and too honest, scaring some who wanted to get rid of her.

Y/N decided to believe it was fate when she met Bruce Wayne.

After all, it was always fate when two soulmates met.

There had been an attempted break-in at the Wayne Tower, the residents had been able to scare the burglar away, but the housekeeper had been very scared, the butler was just getting out of the hospital, and the owner was someone importantly, so several police officers had been sent to the scene to check that they were no longer at risk.

Y/N didn't know Gotham at all. She hadn't really cared about it, except the crime rate, and the neighborhood she had moved to. She only knew some her new colleagues, especially Jim Gordon and Ramirez.

It was a shock to meet Bruce Wayne. An honor according to Ramirez, who seemed to admire the man from afar.

     "Hello... I'm Agent Y/N Y/L/N.", she introduced herself shyly, looking the man in the eye, as she was taking the statement from Mr. Pennyworth and his boss.

The one she thought was her soulmate looked at her too, before lowering his eyes without saying anything. His butler answered all her questions, then he thanked her for her kindness, before accompanying his master to his room.

Bruce Wayne didn't look at her a second time.

Returning to the station, Y/N tried to persuade herself that he was in shock. It could be difficult to meet his soulmate under such circumstances, and he might need time. Or it wasn't the right Bruce Wayne.

She didn't think about it for a while, especially after meeting the Batman.

It didn't seem to shock many people to see a guy dressed as a giant bat walking around town and fighting crime. Well, some cops wanted to arrest him, but others saw him as an ally.

Jim Gordon was one of those threads. And Jim Gordon was a good cop, so Y/N decided to trust him.

     "He can be a little weird, rude, stubborn and quiet, but he helps us a lot. It's not easy to keep peace and security in this city, and even though he's an outlaw, he doesn't never killed anyone, so..."

     "It still wouldn't be good for everyone to start imitating him."

     "You don't know the Riddler, it's obvious."

     "The what ?"

     "You're new."

Gordon was right, he was silent. Rude. Appearing in shadows, speaking little, with his deep voice. The costume might have been ridiculous, but Y/N could understand that the criminals were afraid of him.

The beginnings were complicated, because the Batman did not trust people easily. Like Bruce Wayne, or so it seemed.

Several times, Y/N tried to communicate with him, under the pretext of the progress of the case, but each time, it was the governess or the butler who answered her. They looked sorry, which didn't help her to know if she had found her soulmate or not.

Her teammate, Martinez, taught her more about the Waynes. About what happened when the family came home from the theater. Y/N hadn't thought to inquire on her own, she found it inappropriate. This allowed her to understand Bruce Wayne a little better, and to decide to give him more time.

During this time, she began to get to know the Bat better.

They were working on cases more and more often. The masked vigilante seemed to gradually accept the presence of the new policewoman, even if he remained a man of few words.

According to Gordon, he had spoken to her more than to anyone since his arrival, more than two years ago.

     "Jim will end up being jealous."

     "Why ? He's still my favorite mustachioed cop."

     "I'll tell him you said that."

     "He won't believe you." said Batman with a smile in his voice, despite his impassive face.

After several months, Y/N ended up taking stock of her situation. Gotham's crime rate remained hopelessly the same despite their best efforts. She was starting to like Batman a lot. And Bruce Wayne still hadn't contacted her.

One day when she felt particularly depressed because of her job, she went to the Wayne Tower, where she was greeted by Alfred. The butler doesn't seem to believe for a second her excuse regarding the investigation, which had long been abandoned for lack of evidence.

He was still nice to her, letting her talk. It was then that Bruce walked down the hall. Their eyes met, he paused for a moment, surprised, but visibly recognizing her, before leaving as quickly as he had appeared. His butler apologized for him. Y/N was then certain of two things that day. Bruce Wayne was her soulmate, and he didn't want her.

It was rare to be rejected. Most of the time, your soulmate would either die or you never had the chance to meet them. But rejection ? Horrible.

However, she had to accept the situation and move on. Y/N always had a goal, her job. And Batman.

It was probably a stupid mistake to get attached to a man she knew nothing about, except his mouth and his voice. That she didn't see more than an hour, from time to time, to talk about crimes. But in her loneliness and despair, he was the only person who brought her some joy.

He wasn't as rude as Gordon had said when she kissed him. It was one evening, after a long case. Y/N was very tired. She wanted to go home and sleep. He had come to collect clues, he had noted that she was not well, and contrary to his habits, he had stayed when he had had what he wanted. Almost shyly, he asked if there was anything he could do. And without thinking, she kissed him.

     "... No. Y/N, no." he said kindly, pushing her away before leaving through the window.

They didn't talk about it again. Y/N tried not to be heartbroken for the second time in less than a year. It was stupid.

She thought she understood why the Bat had done this when she saw him with the thief who disguised herself as a cat. They seemed close. Very close.

It wasn't normally proper to talk about other people's soulmates. Soulmates were a private thing. But after almost a year in this city where justice did not work, after being rejected, having lost sleep, having worked with a vigilante, Y/N didn't care a bit about what was proper or not.

     "Is she your soulmate ?"

     "Who ?"

     "The Cat ?" Y/N asked without looking at him, focused on the last crime scene photos they were studying together.

She felt Batman's gaze on her, that dark, piercing gaze. He said nothing for a long moment, which she interpreted as a confession, and a demand that she not continue talking about it.

     "... No." he eventually admited.

     "No ? I thought so."

     "No."

     "Okay. Sorry."

They continued to work in silence, but she could feel that he wasn't as relaxed as before, not as focused, still staring at her instead of thinking about the series of murders they wanted to solve.

     "Have you met your soulmate ?" She couldn't help but ask.

     "... Maybe."

     "I'm not looking to find out your identity, if that's what you're worried about. I'd be glad if you met them. You deserve some happiness and calm in all this darkness."

This time, he was totally looking at her. Y/N forced herself not to turn around, as if she didn't feel he was staring at her gravely.

     "Afterwards, it doesn't matter if you haven't met them yet. It's easier when you're alone, I guess. And you must be afraid that they won't understand, or that they will in danger."

     "... A bit."

     "Nobody's ever really safe. And if they're your soulmate, they'll understand. It's hard, but they'll understand. Anything can be accepted out of love, like... Like rejection."

It was official, they weren't going to finish this case tonight. Y/N couldn't concentrate at all, trying not to cry thinking about Bruce.

     "Don't reject your soulmate if you meet them, please. It hurts, a lot."

     "... You were rejected ?" he asked, as if he didn't believe it.

     "Yes. But he has his reasons. He's had… a tough life."

     "... Maybe it's not rejection. Maybe he's scared, and he's not good with people."

     "It's a certainty, but I still waited almost a year, I know when I'm not wanted. Sorry, it's late."

Batman didn't try to hold her back. He said nothing about her tears, or the ongoing investigation. Y/N was a little disappointed. Even if he had tried to reassure her, she would have wanted more. That he asked her to stay, that he told her that he loved her, that he went on the window of her apartment while she was preparing tea.

Instead, someone knocked on her door, and it wasn't him.

     "... Mister Wayne ?" she wondered when she saw him in front of her, holding roses.

     "I know it's late. For everything. I wanted to apologize and... Invite you ?"

     "Invite me ? Where ? When ? You don't sound sure ?"

     "... I don't know. I never invited anyone."

Bruce Wayne looked as adorable as he was vulnerable in that moment, lost, as he stared down at her feet as he handed her the flowers, whispering that it was for her. Y/N couldn't do anything but invite him in, since he didn't know how.

     "Your place is small." he noted, surveying her apartment.

     “Thanks.”

     "No, I mean... It's fine."

     "Don't take this the wrong way, but why now ?" she asked without hatred or detour.

     "I... I didn't know if it was a good idea, before. I'm losing everyone. They're hurt. I didn't mean to... But you've been here for a year now. You're a good cop. A good person. I wish... I wish I got to know you better."

She didn't ask him how he knew that, asking him if he wanted something to drink, coffee or tea. He demanded what kind of tea, and when she replied real tea, he muttered that Alfred would love her, which made her laugh.

A car passed in the street. The lighting in the apartment wasn't strong, so Bruce's mouth was brighter than the rest of his face for a moment, a brief moment, during which Y/N froze on his lips. Lips that seemed familiar, like that voice and those dark eyes. She thought back to what he had said about fear.

They looked at each other without moving, Y/N trying to hide what she had just understood, and Bruce seemed to be waiting for her to say it.

     "So...  Tea ?"

     "Coffee, thank you."

     "Sugar ?"

     "No, thanks."

     "Oh. Black. Like the suit. Alright."

She had said that as a test, but mainly to make a joke, and lighten the atmosphere. After all, she could be wrong, she was very tired, and very attracted by her soulmate as by the Bat.

A hand on her shoulder made her turn around as she picked up two cups, and there was no longer any doubt when he kissed her. Y/N had already kissed this man.

Bruce Wayne was Batman. Her soulmate. Who she'd been working with for a year, who she'd had a weird relationship with for months, and who hadn't said anything the whole time.

She could have been upset, but it was hard when he was looking at her with that apologetic, scared puppy look. Not good with people, that's what he had said. It was terribly obvious when she wanted to kiss him again, but his attention was already elsewhere, fixed on the window.

     "... I have to go." he sighed, gently pushing her away. "... Thanks for the coffee."

He added nothing. Batman had never been talkative, there was no reason for Bruce to be much more so. He didn't ask her when they were going to see each other again, he would probably find her the following night at the police station. He didn't give her his number either.

In the sky, the Batsignal lit up the clouds, a message for the criminals, and for him. If Y/N wanted to see him, she already knew how.

Despite everything, she showed up the next morning at the Wayne Tower, welcomed by an Alfred who was too smiling for him not to already know, who offered her tea and homemade buicuits, before going to fetch his master.

     "He is not morning person, but it must be said that he sleeps little." said Alfred, returning to sit beside her.

     "It must not be easy for you."

     "You have no idea, my dear. I hope you can help me."

     "I can try, but he's known to be weird, rude, quiet and stubborn."

     "It is the least we can say !"

     "I knew you weren't supposed to meet." Bruce muttered as he entered the living room. "Don't plot against me."

     "It's not a conspiracy if you know about it."

     "Alfred..."

     "We will talk later." whispered the butler with a mischievous smile. "Master Bruce, don't sigh, come back and eat a bit with Miss Y/L/N !"

Thank you for asking, I love rambling about my interests and this particular fandom is my special interest so I really love rambling about it :]

Anyway. Half-Life is a video game series released by Valve Software, the first game came out in 1998 and was about an experiment going horribly wrong at a research facility called Black Mesa. On May 16th 200-, 27-year-old theoretical physicist Gordon Freeman (this is our player character btw) did what his higher-ups told him to do and shoved a suspicious crystal under a beam. This resulted in the Resonance Cascade, the inciting incident of pretty much everything that happened since in the series, in which a bunch of portals to a borderworld (basically a universe that can serve as a bridge between other universes) called Xen opened and aliens started coming out of them and wreaking havoc on Black Mesa. Then things got worse somehow with the military showed up, but not to save the BM staff but to shoot everybody on-sight to cover up the incident. Gordon grabbed a crowbar and started fighting his way through all of the aliens and soldiers, eventually making his way to Xen and killing a creature called the Nihilanth, who was keeping the portals open and invading Earth with an enslaved species called the Vortigaunts because it wanted to get away from the Combine (we’ll get into what the Combine are and why they’re so scary in a bit). Then Gordon gets saved by the G-Man.

Since you asked about the G-Man specifically (and since he’s my biggest comfort character and I love him to death), I’ll explain what we know about him. He looks like a mostly ordinary human authority figure, just a tall man in a blue suit, if a little uncanny and with glowing eyes. The term ‘G-Man’ is old-fashioned slang for a government agent and is what the fandom calls him (I sometimes say G' for short) because it’s his name in the game files (it's not his in-universe name, he doesn’t have one to our knowledge). However, he’s strongly implied to be a far greater force than any human government just assuming a form humans can comprehend. He’s widely considered to be the greatest mystery in gaming; nobody knows exactly who he is, what he is or what his motivations are, the only things we know about him is that he more or less controls time and space and ensures the story of the games happens as intended with minor nudges in the timeline and by ‘hiring’ important people. Nominally, he answers to a group of even more nebulous ‘Employers’, but his goals don’t always align with theirs and he occasionally deviates from their orders.

Anyway, the G-Man says that him and his Employers are impressed with Gordon’s work liberating the borderworld and preventing further invasion of Earth, so he offers Gordon a job under him. Gordon accepts, and the G-Man puts him in stasis outside of time and space for about 20 years.

In this interval, a whole lot of things happen on Earth, mostly to do with the fact that this is when the Combine choose to come a-knocking, attracted by all of the interdimensional disturbance caused by the Resonance Cascade. The Combine are a nightmarish parasitic collection of alien species that cannot innovate on their own and therefore seek to invade and assimilate as many worlds as possible in order to steal their existing innovation. The Seven Hour War happens, and that name kinda speaks for itself. It ends when Wallace Breen, the former administrator of Black Mesa, strikes a desperate bargain with the Combine in exchange for humanity’s surrender, and so they keep humanity alive and establish an oppressive, dystopian regime on Earth with Breen as its puppet leader as they slowly drain Earth of its resources, turn humans into brainwashed soldiers and try to replicate the teleportation technology that caused the Resonance Cascade.

However, as it often is with humans, not all hope is lost: a handful of other Black Mesa survivors including scientist Eli Vance and his daughter Alyx Vance start a Resistance against the Combine, which includes teaming up with the now liberated Vortigaunts, who now live on Earth and are even more oppressed under the Combine than the humans are (poor guys can’t catch a break).

Half-Life 2 was released in 2004 and is about Gordon Freeman being returned to the post-Combine Earth after his stasis and teaming up with Alyx and the rest of the Resistance. A lot of humans see Gordon as a saviour figure come to liberate humanity for a second time after he already saved them from one alien invasion, which also paints quite the target on his back for the Combine. Quite a few things happen in this game: a Resistance member named Judith Mossman who wants to protect Eli and Alyx is manipulated by Breen into betraying Gordon’s location to the Combine but Gordon gets away and they get Eli instead and ship him off to torture prison, which Judith did not agree to. Alyx and Gordon then storm the torture prison to rescue Eli where they find Judith and figure out that she‘s been working with Breen and Alyx obviously doesn’t take that very well. They find Eli and go to escape with the Combine’s half-finished, clunky replica of a Black Mesa teleporter, but Judith panics and sends herself and Eli to Breen’s headquarters in the Combine Citadel instead. Alyx and Gordon reroute the teleporter back to a Resistance laboratory and make their escape, but the teleporter, being a half-finished, clunky mess, proceeds to explode and bring down the whole torture prison.

This explosion also messed up the teleportation process and Gordon and Alyx only made it back a full week later, when they find that the blowing up of the torture prison has sparked a full-blown uprising from the humans, who now have solid proof that the Combine aren’t untouchable. Gordon and Alyx join the fight, wanting to storm the Citadel and rescue Eli for real this time. They fight their way there but ultimately get captured, coming face to face with Breen himself, who tries to get them all to surrender. Judith then decides she’s had enough of Breen’s nonsense and backstabs him, setting Gordon, Alyx and Eli free. Breen attempts to make an escape using a Combine portal, but Combine teleportation devices aren’t exactly known for their stability, so Gordon destroys it before Breen gets there and Breen falls to his death in the elevator. Before the whole Citadel can explode and take the whole surrounding city with it, the G-Man freezes time and appears once again to save Gordon (and possibly also Alyx), putting him in stasis once more.

This is where things get a little messy, because instead of using another full game to wrap up this story, Valve decides to release the sequels via smaller expansions called ‘Episodes’; at least three were planned, but only two ever came out.

Not a whole lot happens in HL2 Episode 1, the most notable thing is that the Vortigaunts all team up and use their powers to pull Gordon (and possibly also Alyx) back out of stasis, which the G-Man isn’t pleased about but does let them go. The rest of the episode is everybody trying to get the sparkles out of the city before the Citadel blows up, which they successfully do.

HL2 Episode 2 is where the plot picks back up. The Resistance find out that the Combine are trying to use the leftover energy from the Citadel explosion to send a call for reinforcements to their home universe, something they can prevent if they launch a rocket into space from a Resistance base called White Forest, so that’s Gordon and Alyx’s next destination. They do have to stop for a bit when Alyx gets stabbed through the back by a Combine-made creature called a Hunter and almost dies, but Gordon helps some local Vortigaunts save her life, with the minor caveat that Gordon’s and Alyx’s fates and souls are now forever intertwined. The G-Man also appears here, telling Gordon that Alyx was originally meant to die at Black Mesa but he defied his Employers to save her life. Then he tells the still unconscious Alyx to tell her father to ‘prepare for unforeseen consequences’ and, as usual, mysteriously disappears.

Alyx wakes up and they make it to White Forest, where they receive a message from Judith informing them that she’s also been busy since she left the Citadel. She somehow managed to uncover the Borealis, a research ship that went missing many years ago from Aperture Science (Black Mesa’s rival research facility, they’re very unhinged and have their own games, the Portal series) and is thought to have incredible technology on-board. Most of the Resistance is enthusiastic about finding the Borealis and using its technology against the Combine. However, Eli, upon receiving the G-Man’s message through Alyx, reveals to Gordon that he’s heard these words before and that he’s certain they mean another Resonance-Cascade-level disaster is inevitable if they use the Borealis and decides they should destroy it instead. Then there’s a big battle with Combine forces as the Resistance try to launch the rocket. They’re successful, and the Combine fail to call for reinforcements. Then Gordon, Eli and Alyx go to board a helicopter to the Arctic where the Borealis is located, but before they can do that, they’re interrupted by a pair of Combine Advisors bursting through the wall. Advisors are creatures with powerful psychic capabilities, unlike anything the Resistance has faced before, and while they eventually retreat and Gordon and Alyx survive, Eli is killed in this struggle.

For a very, very long time, this exact cliffhanger was the end. HL2 Episode 2 came out in 2007 (which is also the year I was born, funnily enough). Half-Life 2 Episode 3 still does not exist, and neither does Half-Life 3, to the point where it’s a meme in the pc gaming community that Valve can only count to 2.

What does exist is Half-Life Alyx, a VR-only game with Alyx as the protagonist that released in 2020 and technically takes place between the first two games but also does a lot of cool wacky timeline things that would take a separate post to explain because this one is already getting absurdly long. Another thing I didn’t mention is the HL1 expansions, which are a handful of shorter campaigns released between 1999 and 2001 that tell the stories of other characters who survived Black Mesa and are also questionably canon due to being made by Gearbox Software, who got a few Valve canon things wrong.
