The way tumblr users hiss and yell wherever they see the word 'tracking' reminds me of when avast tries to scare me into buying premium by giving me popups being like 'WE FOUND A TRACKING COOKIE SOMEONE IS TRACKING YOU' about the cookie that's like. in charge of setting the language on a website I'm using lol

#like. are there shitty usages of cookies and query strings? yeah #most of the time connected to displaying ads and stuff #but just bc you see a query string (usually described on here as 'anything after the question mark' despite starting w the question mark)#doesn't mean it's Bad Privacy Violating Stuff #as a dev it gets on my nerves when i see ppl fearmonger about that lol #sometimes it's stuff that literally allows a website to function #sometimes it's just general stuff w no personally identifying info that just lets the devs know how often a feature is used on a website #those figures are often needed to know if improving or fixing a feature is priority #big deadline on a release but you've found a bug? maybe they'll hold off if hardly anyone is using it #(or if ppl are so adamant on Getting Rid Of Scary Text that they don't have the info)#ad based tracking though? yeah fuck that.#y'all aren't getting my personal demographics or whatever so you can advertise shitty fad pills or w/e
