Sleepover Essentials: Because Adult Sleepovers are the Best

My bonding time with my girlfriends consists of brunch or dinner whenever we’re all at the same area, quick coffee dates, or something big like going on a trip once in a while. But for me, the best fun happens at a sleepover in your friend’s place (or yours), pillow fights optional. There’s something about sleepovers that’s intimate, which guarantees to always bring you closer together whether it’s the first time or it’s like you are roommates already.

Anyway, I’m the kind of person who likes to be prepared all the time (aka the checklist girl) and here are my essentials to a super fab girls' night in. You won’t see the obvious basics like toothbrush and a change of clothes here, okay? But please pack those and let’s proceed.

Make sure you take everything you need with you, hygienic-wise, in a toiletry kit. I have here the Lipault Toiletry Kit in Amaranth Red. Aside from it being large yet cute with a retro style, I like its framed opening that allows you to see everything stashed inside.

Next is actually an obvious basic – underwear. But I hope you exercise a conscious effort to choose your best ones to bring so that you will not freak out about your girlfriend seeing your granny panties. Let’s move on to liquids! But not the kind you’re probably thinking. *ehem booze ehem* It’s time to get relaxed and cozy for a movie marathon, make your skin comfortable too. If you are the host of the sleepover, you also have to think about snacks and drinks (still not the kind you’re thinking lol) to serve to your friends. It’s fizzy but not like a carbonated soda and it has a unique nutritional balance of calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate, which cannot be found in regular drinking water. You should try this!

Eclipse of the Inferno

Rosalind Aryana cared an extraordinary amount about the rain. Many of the passerby would wonder why she would hum contently while walking through a rainstorm. They wondered why she would hold out her hand and giggle as the rain drops fell upon her calloused hand. They pondered why she would go out of her way to dance aimlessly in the fields and willingly lay in the soaking grass.

They didn’t know the half of it.

Rosalind had all her fond memories in the rain. Sure, the sun was gorgeous to every other individual, and they most dreaded the rain, but Rosalind had only ever cherished the rain. She remembered the smell of autumn drawing near after every late summer shower. She remembered the gentle drops caressing her face as she ran from her crumbled home. She recalled screeching and crying in the sunshine. She remembered how desperately she ran into the nearest brush to hide from ill tempers and hands riddled with hate. But as she ran, she had come into the most beautiful field, scattered with sunflowers and thorns that threatened those who dared pluck them. She had fire in her throat, and the tears fell freely as she dug her hands deeper and deeper into the thorns. She never paid any mind to the stabs in her hands, only the cold hate that swamped her mind and heart. However, she felt one cold droplet fall onto her hand. Then another, and another, and another. With every drop that caressed her small hands, she felt every wave of anger wash off her.

The pattern was repeated, she would have many fond memories in the rain, and feel as though the sky empathized with her in a way no one else ever would. She would feel her entire body burn and seethe, but as soon as the rain arrived, she would feel at peace and content.

She would gather the rain water in large buckets, and feel as though an entire musical symphony would orchestrate as she watered her garden. She lived modestly, never really needing much more than what her little cottage provided. It was quite small, and she never truly strayed too far from it, only traversing the path to her field that she loved so dearly.

One thing she didn’t expect to find, on one hot summer morning, was another figure standing with an umbrella in the field. She had never really seen too many people wander into it. But she paid the figure no mind and assumed they were lost. This repeated until the figure was seen far too many times in that field. They would smell the flowers, dance, and appear as though they were a whimsical spirit. Rosalind felt drawn to them. It pained her heart when a day would pass and she would never introduce herself to the figure.

Until one evening.

Rosalind assumed the figure to be gone for the day, and so she headed out in order to have her own fun with the field. She danced until her feet gave out, she sang until her lungs hurt. She had a joyous time, and at that moment, she plopped herself onto the grass and cloud gazed. One thing she didn’t expect was for the figure to lay next to her. It scared her half to death, and she jumped from the sudden motion. When the figure turned, Rosalind could see that they were actually a girl. A girl with wonderful brown eyes that made Rosalind’s cheeks turn red. The girl giggled and lifted her parasol.“Care for some shade?” She inquired. Rosalind could hardly speak, but she managed to nod her buzzing head. She wasn’t sure if she was feeling dizzy from exhaustion or enchantment.

The girl reminded Rosalind of the sunflowers she adored from her youth. She seemed to be the sunlight streaming through every window, the flowers that bloomed between the cracks of an empty sidewalk. She was the fresh spring that came after every harsh winter.

Rosalind hated it.

She hated the way her heart turned when the girl smiled at her. She hated how she thought of leaning on the girls shoulder wherever they walked. She hated how she dreamed of confessing her feelings under the moonlight, and how joyous she would feel if the girl reciprocated.

She hated how she didn’t hate any of that at all.

The rain would come, and the two would meet in the same field, drenched but not dreadful, soaked but not seeping. Only content and seamless. They would dance, they would sing, and they would feel terribly when leaving. Rosalind would continue to suffocate herself with her feelings, only hiding them to preserve what little relationship they had.

She would cry in the sunlight, choking on the pain as thorns dug into her skin. The thorns never hurt as much as her mind. In fact, they were more like a lifeline, the only thing keeping her upright. Then, once she cried all she could, and the feelings she kept locked were let out, she would lay in the grass, not feeling any particular feeling, and it would start to pour.

Ah, the rain.

What a beautiful and terrible thing.

WRITING AND RESEARCH —

1) Art I was assigned is Kehinde Wiley 2018 Portrait of a Tyesha Flemons, oil on canvas, 85 1/8” x 73 5/8”.

1)Kehinde Wiley work deals mostly with aspects of race and sexuality making them fall into the category of Identity Art and Identity Politics

2)Wiley has reused recognizable historical art images, such as portraits of Napoleon

3)Wiley is a gay black man so a lot of his art shows his attempts to portrayal bodies of black men as desirable and vulnerable instead of making them objects of violence and fear

4)Wiley was commissioned to create former president Barak Obama’s portrait for the National Portrait Gallery.

5)Kehinde Wiley started painting his signature portraits in 2001, this was part of his residency at the Studio Museum in Harlem and this had him inviting strangers from the street back to his studio.

2). When first looking at this piece of work I had been drawn in by the main focus being a woman of color. As I looked more and learned more about the artist and his art, I be came more interested in the little attributes that the woman in the picture had. She has features that some would fin as flaws, such as long bright nails and tattoos, but she still stands tall and confident. In her stance she has her shoulders squared and her chest puffed while also having her chin raised, this shows that she proud of herself and conveys Kehinde Wiley’s goal of empowering.

ART AND WRITING —

The work of art from my life is the painting of the woman of color that hangs in my room. It looks as if it was made using ink to be manufactured but it could be paint and a canvas. I use it for decoration in my room and and my mother had gotten it for my when I was 17. I think this picture is extremely beautiful, and I think this because I feel like I can see my self in this character. Her hair is similar to mine, I love flowers and she just looks like she is confident overall.

Sleeping Kurtis || AU Bingo2 - Candlelight

Walking up the tower steps would be considered the easiest part of this. But it wasn’t. She felt like she had to drag her body up the steps, leaning mostly on the railing. How easy it would be to just give up and lay there on the stairs. But then the dragon would have been for nothing. And those thorns. That had been a mess. And of course, there was him.

His smile.

His eyes.

His voice.

She wished they were back in that little part in the forest, humming, singing and dancing. Together. It was such a perfect, tender moment. Aryana realized she would fight off ten dragons, go through miles of thorny passage ways, and all to get to him. And with new found motivation, she continued. No matter how tired she was. No matter how battered she felt. 

Finally though, she made it to the chamber, pushing it opened slowly in case there were any more surprises. There wasn’t. All that was in the room were candles and a grand bed in the middle. It was dark outside, and with the only light source being the candles, it gave the room a slightly eerie look.

Slowly, Ary made her way towards the bed, stopping once she was just to the side of the sleeping figure. Though the candles made the room appear creepy, the way the candlelights hit Kurtis’ face, she couldn’t help but think he looked beautiful. It was as if he were glowing. Even in his sleeping curse. Very gently, she stroked his cheek before leaning forward. She knew what she had to do. She brushed her lips against his cheek before dragging them to the corner of his mouth. Ana hesitated. What if he didn’t wake up? What would she do then? Only one way to find out really... She pressed her lips into his, pulling away only inches to see if worked.
