I had gotten an ask regarding why South Indians are stereotyped in Bollywood. Firstly, a very crucial thing to make a mental note of is that Bollywood is not the ultimate, supreme entity which represents the ethos of the entirety of India. Every film industry represents a part of that and Bollywood is just one of them. So, thinking of Bollywood's portrayal of something as the end of the world if it's not precisely accurate—should not be the case whatsoever. However, sometimes stereotypes echo deep-rooted historical prejudices and cross a line.

On the ground, we're not a utopia. Since the 20th century, most Indians in the North in the Hindi speaking belt have been exposed (solely or majorly) to Bollywood. So much so, that even credible sources hold that 1.2 billion people of India are invested "Hindi and regional cinema." Generalising Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali and so many other industries as one standard homogeneous "other."

This limelight to Bollywood—from actors' every movement to their filmography—is evident even now. The target audience has to be majorly the Hindi speaking and understanding people invested in the industry's popular culture. This can be a decent reason why the Hindi film industry produces movies which are (mostly, there are nuances here) North-Indian centric, which become a blanket of warmth to the Indian diaspora too.

People of every region, from a Saradar to a Tamilian, are stereotyped. "South Indians" is a term that I find icky. People from Southern India is much more appreciable. Anyways, these charicaturised portrayals of southern Indians have been going since ages. From Padosan's Pillai to Ra-one's Shekhar eating Noodles with Curd to Meenamma's god forbid accent to Meenakshi Sundareshwar to Salman Khan's Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan, with a large banana leaf engraved with 'Welcome to South India', as if South India is a far, exotic country and the banana leaf is its flag.

The last is from 2023. Not too long ago is it? This problem may have lessened relatively but is nowhere near eradication. Worshipping Rajnikant, dosa and idly endorsers, saying 'aiyoo' and 'enna rascala' when it isn't even a word spoken by people of southern India and so much more. Calling stereotypes as a soft form of racism is appropriate in this context.

Linguistic reorganization of states from 1956, growing anti-Hindi agitation in states like Karnataka, sentiment against Aryanism with Periyar—all of these from the foundation of this complex edifice of North-South division which reflects in the most downtrodden form in Bollywood. This word 'divide' is misplaced as it gives the illusion that both parties have differences but on an equal pedestal. In the Hindi cinema hemisphere, there are no equalities—there is unapologetic discrimination. This long narrative of Southern India being treated as a different country altogether is due to all these historical differentiations.

But really, it is just sheer laziness. The same lethargy that occurs when movies are remade, copied, and low-effort time and again. No one wants to fact check, be empathetic and learn from past mistakes. Everyone wants to make a good box office collection, not caring about the information in the store. This is the primary reason why this cringe-worthy portrayal still happens in Bollywood. It's time they drop their subtle racism and prejudices, and we as an audience — stop trusting and relying on whatever cinema spews on us.
