Arvind Kejriwal Offers to Virtually Attend ED Summons in Delhi Excise Policy Probe
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has responded to the eighth summons from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) related to the money laundering probe concerning irregularities in the Delhi excise policy case. Despite considering the summons “illegal,” Mr. Kejriwal has expressed his willingness to answer the probe agency’s questions, proposing a date after March 12.
Tumblr media
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced that Mr. Kejriwal will participate in the hearing through video conferencing. However, the ED is firm in its stance, insisting on physically questioning the Delhi Chief Minister, citing the absence of provisions for interrogation via video conferencing.
This development follows the issuance of the eighth summons on February 27, with March 4 set as the scheduled date for Mr. Kejriwal to appear at the agency’s headquarters.
The ongoing investigation revolves around alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the Delhi excise policy (2021–22). The ED is seeking Mr. Kejriwal’s statement on matters such as policy formulation and allegations of bribery.
Having skipped seven previous summonses, Mr. Kejriwal has labeled them as “illegal and politically motivated.” In a statement, the AAP has urged the ED to refrain from issuing further summonses and wait for the court’s decision.
The excise policy, intended to reform the liquor business in the national capital, promised a more modern shopping experience with discounts and offers. However, the order by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena to investigate alleged irregularities led to the cancellation of the policy. The AAP accuses Mr. Saxena’s predecessor, Anil Baijal, of making last-minute changes that adversely affected the policy’s revenue expectations.
Two prominent AAP leaders, Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh, are already under judicial custody in connection with the case. Mr. Sisodia, the former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 26 last year, while Mr. Singh, a Rajya Sabha member, was arrested by the ED on October 5.

Arvind Kejriwal’s Standoff with Enforcement Directorate: A Legal Tussle Unfolds
Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, remains embroiled in a legal dispute with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over his non-compliance with summons pertaining to the excise policy case. Despite the ED’s sixth summons, Kejriwal stood firm, reiterating his stance on their legality and dismissing them as politically motivated.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) issued a statement asserting that the matter has now entered the judicial domain, urging the ED to respect the legal process and refrain from incessant summonses. According to the party, the ED’s recourse to the courts underscores the need for a judicial determination in this contentious matter.
Tumblr media
The recent summons, dated February 14, marked the sixth attempt by the probe agency to summon Kejriwal for questioning. However, the Delhi Chief Minister remained steadfast in his refusal, citing the ongoing legal proceedings and alleging that the summonses were issued arbitrarily.
In response to the persistent summons, a Delhi court granted Kejriwal permission to physically appear on March 16, considering his prior engagements in the legislative assembly, including a debate on a trust motion. The court’s decision reflects a balance between legal obligations and the Chief Minister’s constitutional duties.
The legal saga intensified on February 7 when the ED filed a complaint against Kejriwal for non-compliance with previous summonses related to the liquor policy case. The complaint invoked relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, signaling the gravity of the allegations.
Kejriwal, on his part, has vehemently opposed the ED’s actions, branding them as politically motivated maneuvers aimed at thwarting his participation in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has countered these claims, accusing Kejriwal of exploiting the Budget session of the Delhi assembly to evade investigation into the liquor scam.
As the legal standoff ensues, the dispute underscores broader tensions between political actors and investigative agencies, raising questions about the autonomy of law enforcement and the accountability of elected officials.
In the days ahead, all eyes will be on the courts as they adjudicate this high-profile clash between state power and legal authority, with implications for the future trajectory of Indian politics.

CM Kejriwal moves motion of confidence in Delhi Assembly
Tumblr media
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday moved a motion of confidence in the Assembly which the House will discuss on Saturday.
Seeking the vote of confidence in the Assembly, he said, "Two MLAs had come to me saying they were contacted by BJP members offering them Rs 25 crore each. They were told that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will be arrested and the government will be toppled."
Claiming that the Delhi excise policy case was false, he alleged the BJP wanted to topple the AAP government.
A Delhi court has asked Kejriwal to appear before it on February 17 on a complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for skipping summons in an excise policy-linked case and noted that prima facie the AAP chief was "legally bound" to comply.
The ED had moved the court after Kejriwal skipped the fifth summons by the probe agency for questioning in a Delhi liquor policy-linked money laundering case.

CBI, ED Torturing People To Testify Against Me, Sisodia: Kejriwal Ahead Of CBI Questioning
"CBI, ED filed false affidavits in excise policy case in court; they're torturing people to testify against Manish Sisodia and me," Kejriwal said in a press conference today.
Tumblr media
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday alleged that the CBI and ED are torturing people to take his and Manish Sisodia's name in the Delhi liquor policy scam case. "CBI, ED filed false affidavits in excise policy case in court; they're torturing people to testify against Manish Sisodia and me," he said in a press conference today.
An hour ahead of the press conference, the Bharatiya Janata Party trained guns against the Delhi CM asking what was his relation with liquor contractors and why he was in touch with the accused in the case.
BJP national spokesperson in a press conference said, "The moment Arvind Kejriwal was summoned by the CBI, he started trembling with fear. Arvind Kejriwal is the kingpin of the liquor scam, the investigation so far shows this."
The Delhi Chief Minister has been summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with the now-scrapped liquor policy case on April 16. He has been summoned by the federal probe agency at its headquarters on Sunday at 11 am.
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has already been arrested in the case by the CBI. He was also arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case related to the alleged excise scam.
The Delhi Lieutenant Governor had asked the CBI to probe alleged irregularities after the excise policy 2021-22 was withdrawn in August last year.
The CBI has alleged that the Delhi government's excise policy for 2021-22 to grant licenses to liquor traders favored certain dealers who had allegedly paid bribes for it, an accusation strongly refuted by the AAP. The policy was later scrapped.
On Friday, Kejriwal accused the ED of ‘misleading’ the court with false evidence in the excise policy case while replying to the agency's charge that Sisodia destroyed his mobile phones.
"The ED is taking false statements by torturing people and pressuring them. Even in the case of Sanjay Singh, it has come to the fore that the accused gave a different statement and the ED has written something else in the charge sheet," PTI quoted Kejriwal as saying.

Arvind Kejriwal Says Ready To Face Summons Virtually, Probe Agency Responds
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today responded to the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) eighth summons related to the money laundering probe concerning irregularities in the Delhi excise policy case. Despite deeming the summons as "illegal", Mr Kejriwal expressed his willingness to answer the probe agency's questions, proposing a date after March 12.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said Mr Kejriwal will attend the hearing through video conferencing. However, the probe agency is adamant about physically questioning the Delhi Chief Minister. The ED has said that there is no provision for interrogation through video conferencing.
This move comes after the ED issued its eighth summons on February 27, setting March 4 as the scheduled date for Mr Kejriwal to appear at the agency's headquarters.
The ongoing probe revolves around alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the Delhi excise policy (2021-22). The ED seeks Mr Kejriwal's statement on matters such as policy formulation and allegations of bribery.
Mr Kejriwal has previously skipped seven summonses issued by the ED, labeling them as "illegal and politically motivated." The AAP, in a statement, urged the ED to refrain from sending further summonses and await the court's decision.
The excise policy, introduced to bring an overhaul to the national capital's liquor business, promised a more modern shopping experience with discounts and offers. However, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena's order to investigate alleged irregularities prompted the policy's cancellation. The AAP accuses Mr Saxena's predecessor, Anil Baijal, of making last-minute changes that adversely affected the policy's revenue expectations.

Mr Sisodia, the former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on February 26 last year, while Mr Singh, a Rajya Sabha member, was arrested by the ED on October 5.
