Russian woman who left note on grave of Putin's parents convicted amid dissent crackdown
Tumblr media
A Russian court gave a two-year suspended sentence Thursday to a St. Petersburg woman who left a note on the grave of President Vladimir Putin's parents that said they had "raised a freak and a killer.”The court found Irina Tsybaneva, 60, guilty of desecrating burial places motivated by political hatred. Her lawyer said she didn’t plead guilty because she hadn’t desecrated the grave physically or sought publicity for her action. The note that Tsybaneva placed on the guarded grave on the eve of Putin’s birthday in October read: “Parents of a maniac, take him to your place. He causes so much pain and trouble. The whole world prays for his death. Death to Putin. You raised a freak and a killer.”Since Putin sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022, the government has waged a crackdown on dissent unseen since the Soviet era.In another case, a Russian government agency added actor Artur Smolyaninov and a former consultant who advised the Ukrainian president's office to a list of “extremists and terrorists.”In a January interview with the Europe edition of independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, Smolyaninov stated that hypothetically, he would take part in hostilities only on Ukraine's side. The Ukrainian presidential consultant, Oleksiy Arestovich, resigned after stating online that a Russian missile that caused the deaths of 45 people in the city of Dnipro hit a residential building as a result of Ukrainian air defenses. In other developments Thursday:-- A Russian military court sentenced Nikita Tushkanov, a history teacher from Komi, to five and a-half years in prison for comments he made about last year's explosion of the Kerch bridge linking Ukraine's Crimea Peninsula to mainland Russia. Tushkanov was found guilty of justifying terrorism and “discrediting” the Russian army. The teacher published social media posts in October calling the bridge explosion “a birthday present” for Putin.— Jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny reported on Twitter that he was returned to a solitary confinement punishment cell only a day after his release from one. He didn't speculate why. Navalny, 46, who exposed official corruption and organized massive anti-Kremlin protests, was arrested in Moscow in January 2021 after recuperating in Germany from nerve-agent poisoning that he blamed on the Kremlin. He initially received a 2½-year prison sentence for a parole violation. Last year, he was sentenced to a nine-year term for fraud and contempt of court. He's serving time at a maximum-security prison 250 kilometers (150 miles) east of Moscow. The Kremlin's sweeping campaign of repression has criminalized criticism of the war. In addition to fines and jail sentences, those accused have been fired, blacklisted, branded as “foreign agents” or fled Russia. Source link Read the full article

Reporter's Notebook: Shaking down 'scoundrels' wherever they are
It took a famous actor who once played a Russian soldier in a popular film to set Russia’s State Duma off. When Artur Smolyaninov told “Novaya Gazeta Europe” he would fight on the Ukrainian side if he had to join the war, plans were quickly rolled out to punish those who like Smolyaninov, have fled Russia and lob criticism in from the outside. Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of the lower house of the…

“An actor who was the star of one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s favorite movies said he feels “nothing but hatred” for his homeland, adding that he is prepared to fight for Ukraine.”
Not all ruskies are warmonger shit nuggets. Some are quite decent people, like Artur Smolyaninov. His hate for russia and desire to fight for Ukraine is commendable.

'Russia's Rambo,' once a Putin favorite, says he'd now fight for Ukraine
CNN  —  Russian actor Artur Smolyaninov was the star of one of President Vladimir Putin’s favorite films – about a Soviet unit making a last-ditch stand against Afghan insurgents. Now he is classified as a “foreign agent” and faces criminal investigation. Smolyaninov was the hero of “Devyataya Rota” (The 9th Company), a Russian feature film that came out in 2005. He played the part of the last…

Meduza: Russian officials arm-wrestle to propose the perfect punishment for ‘traitors’
The competition among prominent Russian political figures to out-patriot each other escalated to new heights over the weekend. There were at least two separate scandals that led to senior state officials threatening supposed “traitors” with a violent execution.
The more isolated incident involves Kursk regional parliament deputy Maxim Vasiliev and his wife, Kursk city councilwoman Svetlana Vasilieva, who vacationed over New Year’s in Mexico, whence the couple shared a video of Maxim drinking alcohol and celebrating in Spanish. After the footage circulated online for a few days, Kursk Governor Roman Starovoyt announced his anger and urged Vasiliev’s colleagues to investigate his behavior, suggesting that voters would likely punish him in the next elections. Speaking more directly, United Russia General Secretary and Senator Andrey Turchak called the Vasilievs “shit” and wondered aloud if “Wagner’s sledgehammer” would be needed to persuade them to resign from their positions. For his part, Maxim Vasiliev told the newspaper Kommersant that his Mexico video was meant for friends and family, not the general public, and was thus taken out of context.
Meanwhile, journalists at Mozhem Obyasnit used FlightRadar to track private jets tied to Russian state officials, learning that Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov flew to Dubai, Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov vacationed in Istanbul, and Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov relaxed in the Maldives over the New Year’s holidays.
One more thing: also over the weekend, Governor Starovoyt posted his own video showing him enduring a macho week in a local bootcamp run by the Wagner private military company. According to political analyst Tatiana Stanovaya, Starovoyt’s bootcamp visit boosts the “horizontal” networking resources of Evgeny Prigozhin, Wagner PMC’s nominal owner, who she says has been trying to level up from a mere businessman to a major political player with real clout.
The other controversy that resonated even more loudly in Russia over the weekend began with actor Artur Smolyaninov telling the newspaper Novaya Gazeta Europe that he’d fight on Ukraine’s side if forced to join the war. (Ironically, Smolyaninov is best known for starring in the Russian war film “9th Company.”) Federal investigators in Russia are now under orders to open a felony case against Smolyaninov.
Following the interview, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman and increasingly unhinged blogger Dmitry Medvedev alluded on his Telegram channel to “renewed discussions about traitors” and suggested that Russia should respond “either ‘by the law’ or ‘by justice.’” Medvedev then explained that “special wartime rules” could be introduced “if the law does not work or does not achieve its purpose.” Citing Smolyaninov’s comments, State Duma deputy and television propagandist Evgeny Popov later suggested adopting legislation that would annul the passports of Russians whose “speech threatens the state.”
In a rare public show of disagreement, Federation Council Constitutional Legislation Committee Chairman Andrey Klishas objected to both Medvedev’s and Popov’s suggestions, describing the latter as “competing with Ukraine to violate the rights of your own citizens” and the former as premature without martial law formally adopted by the State Duma and signed by President Putin. State Duma Defense Committee Deputy Chairman Yuri Shvytkin and State Duma Security Committee Deputy Chairman Ernest Valeev later supported Klishas’ remarks.
The next day, an adviser to the acting head of the self-declared “Donetsk People’s Republic” told the state news agency RIA Novosti that Russia must resurrect the Stalin-era “SMERSH” (Death to Spies) counter-intelligence agencies that policed the USSR’s “subversive elements.” State Duma Defense Committee member Andrey Gurulev promptly endorsed this idea, stressing that SMERSH is especially needed in the four recently annexed regions of Ukraine, where there are “a bunch of spies, hiding scouts, and so on.”
