Artsville House Concerts presents The Honey Dewdrops - Saturday, September 6
“They sound more authentic than 99.99% of the artists who make up this thing called popular music… Like. Like. Like.” - Ed Maxin, Blogger for No Depression “Not only are they brilliant musicians, Laura and Kagey are wonderful people whose music is as genuine as their personalities. They have the chops to make it big but more importantly, their sincerity and kindness will vault them to a whole new level in the coming years.” - Bradley Kolodner, WICB, Ithaca, NY The Honey Dewdrops are the Virginia-based roots duet of Laura Wortman and Kagey Parrish. With a blend of new Americana and traditional folk music, they create inspired songs that are rooted in the experience and lives of people. Their sound is transcendent; they write all their own songs and yet no one could ever peg them as just another singer-songwriter couple, not when they’ve embedded a sparse Appalachian clarity on every track that is accessible to listeners everywhere. The songs they write shine with energy and emotion through intimate performances with a handful of acoustic instruments and tightly layered harmonies. On stage, the Honey Dewdrops focus on dynamically blending the sounds of instruments and voices by singing and playing into a single microphone. There is a high lonesome quality to the way their voices blend that is familiar, yet the mixture is unique. Their music covers the ground between hand crafted folk songs, Appalachian fiddle tunes, and a cappella spirituals. In their own way, the duo fills up a room with sound and feeling that lingers long after the show is over. Artsville House Concerts presents Jon Shain - Saturday, March 22
Over the years, Jon Shain has developed and refined his own contemporary version of the Piedmont Blues, a bouncy, energetic style that developed in Shain’s adopted hometown of Durham, NC and elsewhere around the region. “I’d done several albums in a row that really sound like my live group: heavy on the harmonica, heavy on the dobro, and with a sound that is identifiably folk-blues,” Shain says. “I knew I wanted to do something different this time.” On Ordinary Cats, his eighth solo album, Shain doesn’t abandon that sensibility completely, but he does plug it in and crank it up. “I knew I would be playing some electric guitar on this record,” he says. “I haven’t put a lot of electric guitar on my albums. I’ve played it on other people’s albums more than my own.” The result is a modern revisiting of the roots-rock (what some now call Americana) sound associated with Stephen Stills and Neil Young, at times. But there is still a generous amount of fingerpicked acoustic guitar from Shain, a former International Blues Challenege finalist in the solo/duo category. Shain’s longtime musical collaborator, FJ Ventre, co-produced and engineered Ordinary Cats, as well as playing bass and providing backing vocals. Other major contributors to the album include Chris Stamey of the dB’s, who mixed the album, and Greg Humphreys on harmony vocals, currently making a name for himself as a solo artist after years fronting the NC bands Hobex and Dillon Fence. Pete Connolly, of the NC indie band Birds and Arrows, contributed drums to several tracks as well. Artsville House Concerts presents David Childers - Saturday, March 22
"David is the most prolific North Carolina songwriter alive. Everywhere I go people ask about him. It is great to see people constantly discovering this man and his massive body of work.” - Bob Crawford of The Avett Brothers “David Childers in one of the most fascinating songwriters in North Carolina. His soulful delivery and talent as a wordsmith have a way of making the characters in his songs –whether Teddy Roosevelt, Alexander Hamilton, or an old flame – come alive. He’s been a WNCW favorite since the ‘90’s; The Overmountain Men releases are great additions to his catalog.” – Martin Anderson, Music Director & Morning Host, WNCW-FM "The result sounds like Van Morrison musing on Charles Bukowski’s poetry set to Warren Zevon’s melodies. Childers’ writing gets under your skin." - Creative Loafing Click here for tickets and info. Thanks for trying new things, Dylan

Sometimes in the world of house concerts, you must improvise. For instance, when your original venue does not work out, set up the concert in a ROBOT FACTORY! Huge thanks to Integrated Systems, Inc. for the use of their facility. ODi--our second international performer--was a treat, and unless you count her car accident just outside of town hours before the gig, then the evening went off without a hitch. Like I said, sometimes you must improvise. We still have one 2013 season ticket remaining. Catch all four of our wonderful concerts next year for only $49. More info here. Next up, Boston acoustic blues troubadour, Danielle Miraglia. A third of the seats are already gone. Act fast. Click here to learn more. Thanks for trying new things, Dylan
