Spring Festivals Abound in Springfield
Tumblr media
Spring means it’s time for festivals and other outdoor events in Springfield.
First up is ArtsFiesta!, a celebration of Mexican arts and culture on May 3. This year, ArtsFiesta! takes place on Park Central Square and coincides with the popular First Friday Art Walk . The free event features authentic mariachi music, traditional Mexican dancing, live entertainment, bi-lingual storytelling and displays of art from Tlaquepaque, Springfield’s sister city in Mexico.
ArtsFiesta! is followed by the 33rd annual Artsfest on Walnut Street May 4-5. This festival draws thousands of people to shop with more than 140 juried artists from across the country, enjoy food from some of the city’s favorite restaurants, see dozens of performances and play in the interactive kids’ area. Artsfest tickets are $3 in advance at area McDonald’s restaurants beginning April 22 or $5 at the gate. Children 5 and younger are free.
History and the performing arts go hand-in-hand the next few weeks at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, the site of the first major battle of the Civil War west of the Mississippi River. Each spring, the battlefield presents Arts in the Park, a concert series taking place May 4, 11, 18 and 25 and June 1. Authentic historical music, gospel, bluegrass and other types of music are presented at the concerts, all of which are free except for the June 1 program when regular admission of $5 per person or $10 per car will apply.
Another popular event is the Mid-America Street Rod Nationals May 24-26 at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds. Hundreds of street rods will be on display and the event includes a swap meet, craft fair and entertainment. Tickets are $14 for ages 13-29, $5 for ages 6-12 and free for children 5 and younger with an adult. Cost is $12 for military personnel with identification, NSRA members with a current membership card and anyone age 60 or older.
While you’re in Springfield, show your team spirit by attending a Springfield Cardinals AA baseball game at Hammons Field; visit the state’s No. 1 tourist attraction, Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World; check out the Dickerson Park Zoo and enjoy the many other attractions, activities and amenities available in Springfield.

Celebrate ArtsFiesta! May 3 on Park Central Square
Tumblr media
Friday, May 3, 2013, from 6 to 9 p.m., ArtsFiesta!, the family-friendly celebration of Mexican arts and culture moves to Park Central Square. In the heart of downtown Springfield on First Friday in May, ArtsFiesta! will kick off a full weekend of center-city events including First Friday Art Walk and the 33rd annual Artsfest on Historic Walnut Street.
The new venue isn’t the only change. This year ArtsFiesta! will be free of charge, and beer from Springfield’s own Mother’s Brewing Company will be available for purchase on site, along with Mexican-themed food.
“Holding ArtsFiesta! on the Square with free admission makes this the perfect way to experience Mexican and Latino culture right here in Springfield and kick off First Friday downtown,” says Cindy Jobe, Springfield Sister Cities Coordinator.
Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. Free parking is available at the College Station and Heer’s car parks just west of the Square, public lots at Olive and Boonville and elsewhere downtown.
Great Southern Bank is this year’s presenting sponsor for ArtsFiesta! Bi-lingual storytelling is made possible thanks to support from Dr. Michael Hanks. Other sponsors include Nippes & Associates, the Downtown Springfield Community Improvement District, Mother’s Brewing Co., and the City of Tlaquepaque.
Download the ArtsFiesta-poster-2013 here. Further information about performance schedules, vendors and more will be released as the information is finalized in the coming weeks.
