Regaining Momentum: Enhancing Self- Criticism and Perseverance through Artsbased Entrepreneurship Educatione by Sandberg B in Integrative Journal of Conference Proceedings

 Abstract

In the discourse on arts-based learning for business applications, entrepreneurship is a blind spot betwixt applications in organizational and human resources development. Artistic practice is acknowledged as a blueprint for communication and leadership skills, but its potential for self-management in entrepreneurial settings is widely ignored although artists and entrepreneurs resemble each other in some personality traits, and business creation is related to the artistic process. Entrepreneurship education is usually focused on specialist skills and methodical expertise while neglecting soft skills such as perseverance and reflectivity. Our essay addresses these three gaps by introducing arts-based learning to entrepreneurship education and highlighting artists’ ability to cope with inevitable creative crises, to act out productive dissatisfaction, and to strive persistently for a result that is unknown to begin with. Our line of argumentation starts with illustrated investigation of the artistic practice that notions of productive dissatisfaction and perseverance were derived from. Based on individual practical knowledge and a review of artists’ statements, we compiled a list of attitudes and artistic behaviour patterns that are suitable for escaping stagnation. Starting from shortcomings in entrepreneurship education, we point out the potential of adopting an artistic mindset and give an example of trainings in arts-based entrepreneurship education. A successful entrepreneur who admits the benefits of visual arts for starting a business tops off the reflections.

Reaching out to society as a whole and to some specific audiences in particular and demonstrating how research contributes to tackling and answering societal challenges is a pending issue. Coping with the issue requires to question pertinent messages, and to look for new media and means of expression.

Among the identified reasons why dissemination and exploitation of research not always reach their goals are a lack of skills (or interest) to effectively consider the value and possible benefits of the key results outside “typical” community, but also a lack of knowledge of dissemination and exploitation risks and opportunities, especially about alternative channels, routes, stakeholders and competing solutions.

A possible answer to the issue is relying on creative art forms for research and dissemination, as under-used ways of understanding and knowing (Bruce et al., 2013). The utilization of arts‐based methods increases awareness on the empirical evidence or developments of a topic and improves accessibility to research findings in cases where language, literacy, or cultural barriers exist; it expands the possibility to address complex contexts, engages audience members (by stimulating senses and tapping into emotions), and promotes dissemination within communities of practice. Indirect benefits include fostering new audiences interested in research findings, facilitating capacity-building, such as professional learning and skill development around a particular topic.

By creating spaces for debate and dialogue around pressing societal issues, arts‐based methods  can support advocacy around specific issues of concern to influence policy priorities and change, and facilitate partnerships and co-production of knowledge among diverse stakeholders, for example, by offering different modes of expression and representation (Rieger and Schultz, 2014; Kukkonen and Cooper 2018; Lapum et al, 2011). Creative embodied research methods for interdisciplinary research projects using the body to think through ideas provoke new insights and generate innovative ways forward for researchers working in diverse disciplines .

Nevertheless, research in organization science remains attached to classical paper publications, with a limited impact on practice and society (Denis, 2017). Meaningfulness is threatened by running for stars (Rouquet 2017), and voices raise against the academic publication system (Moriceau et al; 2017). “It is time for us to resist, simply by building, and encouraging, our consciousness of desire and desire for consciousness” (Bazin, 2018). Instead of simply resisting and opposing the classical paper format to innovative art-based forms, DYSFUNCTION journal aims at fostering hybrid formats: texts that function as research texts as well as art forms (Bobadilla et al., 2017), a kind of “critically affective performance texts”  (Linstead, 2018).

In November of 2017, I went to an event on 'social justice through culture.' The conference was held in London at the Austrian cultural forum. It was so overwhelming and relevant for me to see that the cases to discuss injustice were in Mexico. However, it was also important to hear about the grassroots struggles, the anonymous, the female initiatives, the opportunities to build together ...

Perhaps, it was a starting point for me to consider doing research about those issues.

“The arts can tap into issues that are otherwise out of reach and reach people in meaningful ways. This realization brought me to arts-based research (ABR). Arts-based research is an emergent paradigm whereby researchers across the disciplines adapt the tenets of the creative arts in their social research projects. Arts-based research, a term first coined by Eliot Eisner at Stanford University in the early 90s, is based on the assumption that art can teach us in ways that other forms cannot. Scholars can take interview or survey research, for instance, and represent it through art. I’ve written two novels based on sociological interview research. Sometimes researchers use the arts during data collection, involving research participants in the art-making process, such as drawing their response to a prompt rather than speaking.” - Patricia Leavy (2014)

Realizing with this read that some of the studies I have already done and am working on are about correspondence/Mail art through participatory arts-based narrative research. Exciting to open this researchers eyes to it!
