Sustainable Fashion: Innovators and Outliers

Fast fashion affects me because I cannot afford to go out and buy hand-crafted, ethically produced clothing, jewelry, accessories, etc. which makes me subject to shopping from fast fashion sites. I try to shop in moderation and only buy what I need or things I have been eyeing for several months but, of course, it is hard to avoid when you cannot afford an alternative. Another way fast fashion affects me is because I knit and having a slow hobby in which clothing pieces are ethically and slowly produced by hand has made me look at the entire industry differently. The fast fashion industry and their cheap prices have affected independent artists who get sneered at when they price their items correctly and they also use slave labor to produce crochet garments which can't be made through a machine.

I honestly don't know any celebrities that are doing a lot to climate sustainability in the fashion sector. I know many celebrities now have clothing brands and some of them preach sustainability but I feel that the most they do is have eco-friendly packaging (usually recyclable, not even compostable) which is reasonably low effort considering these people are backed by investors and are wealthy themselves. I know that Gigi Hadid has a cashmere line that was advertised as being sustainable as well as "affordable" so that people can have high quality pieces in their closet and not have to rebuy. In my opinion, this brand and others like it are greenwashing because cashmere lines already exists and anyone who can afford Gigi's line can afford other cashmere whenever it goes on sale. The most sustainable thing she and other things could've done was not add to the amount of options and, instead, put her name on an already established brand to help bolster the name and encourage people to shop from a long-time sustainable business.

I love the idea of bio-textiles and think, in a couple of years, they will be the automatic choice when it comes to making clothes and furniture pieces. I think that any faults of bio-textiles come from them not being used as much as fabrics like nylon and polyester but those kinks will get ironed out with time. I also think that there has been so much positive feedback to the bio-textiles that have been around for a long time such as cotton and bamboo that it is inevitable for them to only become more popular. They have such great properties as fabrics like breathability and being lightweight, and their value will only be emphasized the more we use them.

All of the more "out-there" textiles like apple mush and shrimp shells could also have a great place in high fashion, both by contributing to the concept and by using lesser-known, more unique textiles to help diversify their collections.

I learned about the microplastics that are left behind with every step we take due to the rubber soles of our shoes being worn out against the pavement some years ago. There are not many shoe brands that use non-rubber soles since they are comfortable and perfect for walking, especially in more urban environments like NYC but knowing that fact has helped me carry on using my shoes for much longer and has inspired me to ship my shoes to recycling programs at the end of their lifespan so that they can become recycled material for new shoes.

I have stopped a lot of my shopping and try not to get too many items shipped to me precisely for this reason. I have had to realize that I own more clothes than I need and can not only make due but feel good in all of the clothes I already own. I also make a concerted effort to only re-sell or donate old clothes to limit the chances of them ending up in landfills.

"Avoid lycra, polyester, and nylon which are made from fossil fuel petrochemicals. They release microfibers into waterways during washing. Spot cleaning these fibers can mitigate the release of microfibers."

Since I started knitting and making some of my own clothes, I try to avoid textiles like acrylic at all costs since all of the other options are biodegradable and healthier for the earth and myself. This has also led me to learning about the various benefits of natural materials like how wool is anti-bacterial and fireproof while cotton is extremely absorbent which is part of what makes it a great warm-weather fiber.

The initiative, which builds on the success of a similar event held in Honiara in 2022, demonstrates the power of art to communicate complex issues such as plastic pollution and its threat to marine biodiversity. Renowned UK artist Mandy Barker's remote collaboration with Solomon Islands' children last year laid a foundational stone, showcasing how everyday plastic waste, when viewed through the lens of creativity, can transform into compelling pieces of artwork.   A Community's Commitment to Change The workshop was more than a lesson in art; it was a clarion call to action against the backdrop of a looming environmental crisis. Samantha Niunaras, Dreamcast Theatre Solomon Islands workshop facilitator, highlighted the dual focus of the initiative: to enlighten the participants about the environmental threats posed by single-use plastics and to inspire them to conceive how they, in their youthful zeal, can contribute to safeguarding their environment. Echoing this sentiment, British Deputy High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Her Excellency Emma Davis, underscored the gravity of plastic pollution. With a ban on single-use plastics commencing on 1st March 2024, the workshop's timing is pivotal, symbolizing a collective stride towards mitigating plastic waste and preserving the pristine nature of the Solomon Islands.   Engaging the Next Generation The involvement of Plastic Wise Gizo, spearheaded by Founder and Chairwoman Rendy Solomon, exemplifies the importance of engaging young minds in environmental conservation efforts. By instilling a sense of responsibility and stewardship towards the environment from an early age, the initiative aims to foster a generation that values sustainability and is proactive in its pursuit. She said: It is crucial for programmes like these to reach communities, especially schools where primary children can adopt a mindset valuing inorganic waste. Reciclar esCultura (Recycling is Culture/Sculpture): Environmental activism from an artistic perspective.

The organization Marea Verde together with Grid Gallery will hold an exhibition of sculptures made with recycled materials. The activity seeks to raise awareness about the importance of caring for the environment and fight against climate change In the midst of forest fires, droughts, heat domes, and hurricanes in various countries around the world, the consequences of light acts against climate change have manifested themselves, creating dangerous situations for the fauna, flora and humanity on the planet. With a mission to mitigate the negative effects of pollution in Panama's aquatic ecosystems, the non-profit organization Marea Verde and the digital native gallery Grid joined forces to exhibit the exhibition Reciclar esCultura 'Recycle Is Culture/Sculpture', which will be open to the public virtually from August 25.

This exhibition stands as a call to action, both necessary and a priority to preserve natural resources within the Panamanian biodiversity. According to studies conducted by the Mayor's Office of Panama in 2019, Panama only recycles 5% of the waste collected nationwide, despite the fact that 70% of the garbage can be reused with an estimated value of $47 million.

Last May 15, in commemoration of World Recycling Day, the Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente) indicated that in Panama City alone approximately 2,500 tons of waste are generated daily. Fifty percent of the daily tons generated are plastic, paper, cardboard, metal, and glass waste. Preliminary reports indicate that each Panamanian generates about 1.2 kilograms of solid waste per day, and nationally it is estimated that 4,400 tons are generated daily that "go directly to landfills and take hundreds of years to degrade naturally.

The initiative came from Marea Verde, which created a contest for artists who wanted to illustrate a message of conservation and environmental protection through recycled garbage in the rivers of Panama City. The organization's project coordinator, Sandy Watemberg, told La Estrella de Panamá that she was looking for an initiative that would "encourage artists to create works that would attract attention", but that would also transmit a "sense of learning and awareness for the spectators".

"We came up with a contest that would bring together the challenging components of creating ecological art, implementing learning and awareness, as well as creating a show that would leave a testimony of what we, as humans, have caused in the environment," said Watemberg. The call for entries for the competition was launched in mid-April 2021 and entries were open until May 10. More than 190 artists submitted photographs and videos of their work as entries for the competition.

Beyond just making a selection, Watemberg noted that the organization held educational workshops on green projects, and the importance of recycling, as well as the participation of the Autoridad de Aseo in the recycling and waste reuse process in the capital city.

"Since we did not know what the situation of the country would be in the midst of the pandemic when devising the contest in 2019, we decided to hold the final show virtually, and then we connected with Grid gallery, who have provided a platform for the arts that has opened doors for us to enjoy culture, as we could not have done before an emergency situation like the current one," said Watemberg.

The exhibition, which consists of more than 20 works -15 finalists and 6 winners- is a range of ideas, thoughts, hope and denunciations in the face of the current climate situation. The winning works of the contest were: 'Ola de basura', by Melissa Ramírez; 'Esperanza el pulpo' by Yarelys Mendoza; 'Mar de posibilidades', by Econciencia: Mkrtich Darbinyan and Daniel Nikolaev and Clandestino; 'Hada del manglar' by Natalie Milord; 'Manglar blanco', by Hugo González, and 'Fiesta congo' by Humber González.
