Gleeful Q&A with Jacob Artist
Jake Puckerman, aka Jacob Artist, is back to answer fan questions! Jacob addresses the elephant in the room right away, the storyline that haunts him to this day … yep, Jake cheating on Marley! He has a special message to Glee fans about that! Plus, a behind-the-scenes story of fan-favorite performance, "Let Me Love You," why he was so intimidated by Naya Rivera, how he found out he was not returning to the series in the middle of season 5, and what he misses most about the show!

My favorite solo from each main character on glee (because why not)
SUE: Vogue. “WILL SCHUESTER I HATE YOU”
KURT: Rose’s Turn. Chris Colfer rarely got songs that highlighted ALL his vocal strengths. This song used everything. He had a strong head voice, an amazing mix, and he can EMOTE WITH EVERY INCH OF HIS LIFE. No wonder he got the Golden Globe.
QUINN: This Is A Man’s World. This scene is ridiculous, but out of context the song absolutely slaps. Diana can BELT and she deserved to do it more.
ARTIE: Stronger. Probably my favorite Britney song. Kevin ate. That is all.
PUCK: Only the Good Die Young. This song is so fun and I think Puck’s voice is very underrated. A good ol’ jam. Thank you for repping the Jewish community king ❤️
WILL: Sway. It’s a shame that we never talk about his voice because HOLY SHIT MATTHEW MORRISON IS INCREDIBLE. This man is so talented and we never acknowledge it because of Will Schuester’s shenanigans.
BLAINE: Somewhere Only We Know. You can hate Blaine all you want but you can’t deny the POWER of this song. The love in his eyes is sickening I am not okay right now
FINN: I’ve Gotta Be Me. Given the fact that Cory didn’t have any singing experience before, this song makes me so fucking happy because you can see how much he had grown as a singer, but also how proud he was of himself! Look at him go!!! (Bonus: If I’m bending the rules in terms of what qualifies as a solo I would 100% make his Paradise By the Dashboard Light. That was his undoubtedly his very best vocal performance. It’s SO FUCKING GOOD it makes me go batshit.)
RACHEL: My Man. “She may be difficult but boy can she sing.”
BRITTANY: Run the World. The dancing is definitely the more impressive part of this number, but it still sounds great! This song really highlighted Heather’s strengths, when most of her songs weren’t very memorable in my opinion.
MIKE: Cool. Maybe Tina should be a professional vocal coach because damn look at him go!! Idk why an Asian kid wanted to play the role of a leader of a white supremacist group but at least he sounds great 🤷‍♀️
MERCEDES: I Will Always Love You. Literally every single Mercedes song is perfect, so this was the hardest one for me. This means I had to base it on acting. And she DELIVERS here. It should be illegal to be this talented.
TINA: Because You Loved Me. The fact that this is one of TWO solos that Jenna actually got to finish infuriates me. She was ROBBED because she is an amazing singer.
SANTANA: Nutbush City Limits. LADIES AND GENTLEMAN, MISS NAYA RIVERA. HOLY SHIT. Finn saying before the song, “They say that true divas aren’t really mortal” is so true. This woman was an absolute icon and I will always be blown away by her talent.
JAKE: Let Me Love You (Until You Learn to Love Yourself). It’s so EARNEST and HEARTFELT and Jacob Artist popped off with the acting. And the falsetto!! God it’s just beautiful.
EMMA: Getting Married Today. This is a trio, not a solo, but it’s so fucking good that I HAD to do it. That is literally one of the hardest female songs on Broadway, and for some reason they had Jayma sing it even FASTER than the original version? I can’t imagine the stress of trying to do that, but she was perfect.
SAM: Copacabana. This is just a really fun song! Everyone’s having a good time and Chord sounds amazing.
RYDER: Your Song. This is my favorite Elton John song, and boy was it done justice. The acting is really good in this scene. The mix of anxiety and earnestness coming from Ryder is adorable. He had great chemistry with whoever that girl was. (On a storyline note, I hated how this all developed though. If it had gone my way, Unique would confess it was her, then Ryder would sing this directly to Unique.)
KITTY: Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours. I just really like this number. Obsessed with Becca’s high notes.
MARLEY: Wrecking Ball. The cheating storyline with Bree was so fucking stupid and shouldn’t have happened. That being said, Melissa ATE what they gave her and left zero crumbs. She really came in like a wrecking ball.
UNIQUE: I Know Where I’ve Been. THIS SONG MAKES ME GO FUCKING CRAZY!!! THE TRANS CHOIR!!!! THE ACTING!!!!! THE FUCKING HIGH NOTE!!!!!! IT’S JUST SO GOOD I CAN’T HANDLE IT!!!!!!! This is the best part of season 6, full stop. THE most underrated Glee song ever. I will not accept criticism towards this opinion.

Glee Musical Retrospective: You Can't Always Get What You Want (Sectionals)
youtube
Sung by: New Directions Original Artist(s): The Rolling Stones
Oh where to begin with this...
Story Analysis
You can't always get what you want But if you try sometimes, well, you just might find You get what you need
There's a set up for this song earlier in the episode -- where Will is talking Finn into returning to New Directions, and tells him that he can't always get what he wants. Which inspires Finn to pick this song for their big sectionals number.
Thematically - the song works for the story, and works for the whole concept of Glee. In life - you can't always get what you want (hence the general popularity of the song). But sometimes you do get what you need out of your circumstances.
Finn doesn't get the girl - but at least he still gets to be a leader and have those who rely on him (and bonus not having to be a teenage dad).
The glee club doesn't get to rise to the top of the hs hierarchy but, they at least get a family in which they can safely be themselves.
Even Will doesn't get a working marriage - but at least he finds that love still exists.
The song is very on point for the message the show is trying to create. The world sucks - but at least you can find people who are like you enough to make it worthwhile. Glee has never been a subtle show - and this song hits the nail on the thematic head a bit hard.
And I went down to the demonstration To get my fair share of abuse (Singing, we're) Gonna vent our frustration (If we don't we're gonna blow) A 50-amp fuse
Understandably - they don't sing any of the verses that are more related to drugs and drug culture. By the do include the one about civil rights. While it's not a one-to-one comparison, it makes sense that the ND would sing about standing up for being different -- getting shoved down because of those differences and singing about how they want to be them anyway.
Technical Analysis
So, fun fact - apparently Dijon Talton, Harry Shum Jr., Heather Morris, and Naya Rivera helped with the choreography for this number - I wonder if the scripted line about Matt, Mike, Brittany and Santana doing the choreography was a nod to this.
That said - the dancing here is a bit rough and loose. It's intentional (and I'm just completely sidestepping away from the conversation that it's in anyway believable that the ND could pull this off hours before) but it does feel more like the kids bopping around the stage haphazardly than any cohesive dance number.
The cast sounds fine, even if it's a lot of the same arrangement of group numbers we've heard consistently throughout the Front 13. Finn and Rachel lead the group, with Mercedes coming in at the end with that big note. The back up vocals are blocky - and while yes, in the style of a show choir, feels (as usual) too big to be just twelve voices. It's a fine number - but maybe it's me personally - it's one rock number that I don't know if works in its translation to show choir number.
Just a couple of minor things -
The cast is hilariously over the top happy in this number. I can't tell if they're breaking or laying it on too thick.
I can't with the audience standing up as if it were a rock concert. I'm already beyond having to suspend my disbelief for this illogical plot, the audience just breaks my brain a little.
I should mention the ending bit - the hands raised as a call back to DSB.
vs. The Studio Recording : It's becoming apparent to me just how much other sound mixing they do for the episode performances - such as adding audience cheering, atmospheric sounds, etc. Also - there's about another minute of added song. But instead of including the other verses - there's a strange turn in the song that feels very Glee-ish, and less Rolling Stones. It was kind of unexpected since most of these songs have been diligent copies of the original. I wonder if there was a note that the original lyrics were a little too risque but they wanted a longer version of the song?
vs. The Original Version : There are a lot of different 'original' versions of this song - including the one on the album that features a choir - which Glee does mimic in its own performance. I linked one that has a really young Mick Jagger in it, though, cause I thought it was kind of fascinating. Of course - the other thing that picking one of these classic rock songs is a nod to Don't Stop Believin' - the song that set the tone for the series. Glee, of course, does a very much watered down version of it, and unlike how Glee's DSB feels inspired and magical, I think this one feels a little more Kidz Bop-ish.
Anyway - I did a whole deep dive into the original inspiration for the song, and what the verses mean (the chorus is, perhaps, pretty self explanatory). I couldn't find one single account - even Mick Jagger has conflicting thoughts on it. But a lot of it revolves around dealing with culture at the times -- and a lot of it drug culture. As I said above, it doesn't surprise me that almost all of these references are cut from the Glee version - which I have to wonder if it was a note from the network, or a choice that Glee itself made.

Decoding the Lyrics: A Dive into Music’s Meaning
Music is one of the most powerful art forms, transcending barriers of language, culture, and geography. At its heart lies the lyrical storytelling that resonates with listeners on personal, emotional, and intellectual levels. From poetic musings to socially charged narratives, lyrics have always been a vital tool for artists to express their deepest thoughts and feelings. In today’s world, where genres blur and innovation thrives, the art of lyricism continues to evolve, offering listeners a deeper connection to their favorite songs. Let’s take a closer look at how different artists and styles, such as Naya Rivera, interpolation music, childish gambino songs, Carly Rae, and metro boomin lyrics, contribute to the richness and diversity of modern music.
Lyrical depth often defines the longevity of a song. Artists like Naya Rivera have demonstrated how lyrical performance can connect audiences on an emotional level. Known primarily for her role in Glee, Rivera left an indelible mark in music through her renditions of popular tracks. Songs like her version of “If I Die Young” reveal a vulnerability that lingers long after the final note. Her lyrical delivery was not just about singing but about embodying the story behind the words. This ability to turn lyrics into a narrative experience is what made her performances so memorable, showing that music is much more than just melody—it’s an emotional journey.
The concept of interpolation music has become an exciting way to breathe new life into older works. Interpolation, which involves re-recording and reinterpreting parts of an original song, serves as a lyrical bridge between generations. Unlike sampling, interpolation allows modern artists to creatively reimagine a song while paying homage to the original. A perfect example is the way artists incorporate older lyrics into contemporary music, ensuring that classic themes find relevance in today’s culture. This practice not only highlights the timelessness of great songwriting but also gives listeners a fresh perspective on lyrics they might have overlooked before.
Modern hip-hop, too, is defined by its lyrical innovation, and metro boomin lyrics are at the forefront of this trend. Known for his work as a producer, Metro Boomin collaborates with some of the biggest names in the industry, crafting lyrics that are as much about rhythm as they are about meaning. His tracks often delve into themes of ambition, struggle, and triumph, offering listeners a mix of raw emotion and poetic wordplay. The collaborative nature of his music ensures a dynamic lyrical style that evolves with each project, keeping his audience engaged and reflective.
Pop music, while often dismissed as light-hearted and commercial, can also be a vehicle for meaningful lyrics. Artists like Carly Rae have mastered the art of combining catchy melodies with themes that resonate universally. From the infectious optimism of “Call Me Maybe” to the introspective tones of her later albums, Carly Rae’s lyrics explore love, vulnerability, and self-discovery in ways that connect deeply with her audience. Her ability to craft lyrics that feel personal yet universal is a testament to her talent as a songwriter and performer.
Few artists today command as much respect for their lyrical prowess as Donald Glover, better known as Childish Gambino. His childish gambino songs are celebrated for their intricate wordplay and profound social commentary. Tracks like “This Is America” highlight systemic issues while blending storytelling with unforgettable visuals. Gambino’s lyrics often challenge listeners to question societal norms, making his work a prime example of how lyrics can transcend entertainment to become a powerful tool for awareness and change. His music proves that lyrics have the ability to educate and inspire action, showcasing the transformative power of words.
As listeners, we often focus on the melody or production of a song, but the lyrics are where true artistry lies. Whether it’s the emotional rawness of Naya Rivera’s performances, the nostalgic reimagining of interpolation music, the groundbreaking narratives in metro boomin lyrics, the relatable charm of Carly Rae’s pop anthems, or the thought-provoking storytelling in childish gambino songs, lyrics have a way of speaking directly to the heart. They give songs their soul, offering us a glimpse into the artist’s world and our own.
Next time you hear a song, take a moment to dive into the lyrics. What story are they telling? What emotions do they evoke? Music is a universal language, and lyrics are its poetry. So, explore the artistry behind your favorite tracks and let their words inspire, move, and connect you. What are your favorite lyrics that have left a lasting impression on you? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
