RomaTrial presents: BERLIN POST PUNK! a Feminist Band*s Happening! The green t-shirt with the slogan “Girls invented punk, not England” worn by Kim Gordon is for sure one of the most memorable outfits of music history. And that slogan is true: the revolutionary and disruptive force of punk should rightfully called feminist too. No music scene has so many FLINTA people involved in, and the whole new wave scene that scattered from it has an impressive numbers of FLINTA artists and bands that took their music in any disparate direction, sometimes incredibly far away from any rock clichee.
PIEUVRE, VORSICHT KINDER & JEJEJE (bands associated with the label K i t c h e n L e g R e c o r d s) are going to show perfectly an uncompromising originality in their music being the playfullness infused of the alcolpop-neue deutsche welle of Vorsicht Kinder, the math max rhythms with minimalist approach and beautiful melodies of Jejeje or the abrasive, yet very pop no-wave punk funk of Peiuvre”
Pieuvre is a sensation from the bubbly Berlin underground, started magically by coincidences, missing connections and a bit of luck. Once Pia, Lina and Fege met, they fused their influences patching together raw-no wavey guitars, a punk-funk like rhythm session and well crafted vocal melodies in three languages. Playful, dance-able, very feminist and mostly quite impertinent. They released their debut “Hyperstretch” with Kitchenleg Records in 2023 and a music video for their single “Wardrobe” in May 2024. ByteFM praised Pieuvre’s debut as “grungy lo-fi post-punk, for fans of fuzzed-out guitar sounds”.
Vorsicht Kinder
Well, do you still remember the delicious alcopops – those sweet, sticky alcoholic mixed drinks from your youth that gave you many an excessive high? That’s what the music of VORSICHT KINDER sounds like and from it they claim their own music genre: alcopop – nice and cheap and banging. VORSICHT KINDER are four friends from Berlin who have been playing concerts regularly since 2019 and released their first album ‘Verschluck dich nicht’ on the Berlin label Kitchen Leg Records in 2023. Their style is described as a mixture of post-punk, no-wave and Neue Deutsche Welle that playfully breaks down genre boundaries and song structures. They regularly swap instruments on stage and in Dadaist-feminist lyrics – which sometimes lead somewhere and sometimes into the void – they process states of lust, anger, intoxication and senselessness: Fuck the Banana!
Jejeje is a Spanish onomatopoeia which stands for a skeptical mocking laughing and/or for an apologetic laugh. Jejeje is also a Berlin-based trio that combines post pop, post punk and math max rhythms with a minimalist approach. Band members are Jordi (Parmesano, Nunofyrbeeswax, El Gos Binari), Itacate (Roto) and Zutoia (Muerte y Destrucción, Come ‘n Wait). They got together thanks to the existence of Ojalá Esté Mi Bici, a DIY music collective from Barcelona, and to a house concert of Geoff Farina (Karate) and mOck in Berlin in 2018. Until now, they have self-released a split tape together with their friends Nunofyrbeeswax. Additionally, in December 2022 they appeared in a Xmas punk cover compilation released by Discos Pinya (Barcelona). All three members are looking forward to the release of their first album in 2024, co-release with Repetidor.

caffeine or me? by karate
excuses are okay, however senseless they might be. and senseless is to say that they don’t make sense to me.
#karate#caffeine or me#caffeine or me?#geoff farina#southern records#emo#indie rock#that line is solid gold#there are few lyrics like that#i do not really like or condone the 'violence' part of this song though#is it typical of emo for artists to be like pity me for enacting violence towards women#the takeaway from this rant is that geoff farina is a great lyricist but that lyric earlier in the song needs to be said to a therapist lmao

Eric von Schmidt
Eric von Schmidt, one of the interlaced folk-music crowd of the early 60s that included Geoff and Maria Muldaur, Dave van Ronk, Richard Farina, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and at least a dozen others, mostly around the Cambridge, MA, area, was a major singer/songwriter talent who has inexplicably fallen into a black hole.
Part of it, I guess, was his own fault. He saw himself primarily as a visual artist, a painter like his father Harold, and never put music in the forefront. An illustrator of countless record covers and dust jackets, he also wrote and illustrated children’s books. His art is striking, detailed, loopy – a prime example is his cover for Eric von Schmidt and the Cruel Family, a rocky landscape parody of Bosch featuring flying fish skeletons and himself playing a frying pan as banjo.
Another problem was the dreaded “major influence on Bob Dylan.” In an attempt to give them legitimacy, music historians have diminished a whole generation of superb songwriters to Dylan satellites. With von Schmidt, especially, this is a travesty.
He began his musical career as a disciple of Lead Belly – the rock-solid granddaddy of the “folk” tradition. I first picked up a jacketless copy of a 1961 Folkways record, Rolf Cahn and Eric von Schmidt, which included no song credits. Though I was initially taken more with Cahn’s rolling baritone, the higher keening of von Schmidt’s “Grizzly Bear” and the sweet nostalgia of his “Buddy Bolden Blues” are what stick with me today.
His fist album of all original work, Eric Sings von Schmidt, is a beauty. “Light Rain” and “Kay Is the Month of May” are the kind of gentle love song that make you believe it could last. The islands’ lilt of “Joshua Gone Barbados” (more or less popularized by Tom Rush) makes an understated contrast to a tale of brutalized Caribbean cane field workers. “Cold Gray Dawn” is a frightening, lyrical tale of love’s intolerance and attempted suicide. But my hands-down favorite is “Rattlesnake Preacher,” the story of slick Diamond Joe who can “make the men folk weave and moan, make them women shout.”
As is too often the case, the album I treasure most is the one most forgotten. On Cruel Family, von Schmidt adopted a gruffer voice and took his songwriting to the highest level. A genuinely strange collection, it’s full of imagery that burns into your mind and stays there.
This from “You Get Old, You Get Wise”: “Now, don’t you eat chop-suey with a knife and fork./Well, the knife’s too long, honey, and the fork’s too short!” (It took me several years to realize he was talking about using them as chopsticks.) “Debt I Owe,” sung by a womanizing reprobate, includes some of his best, uniquely sprung lyrics: “…the Judge said, ‘Young man, what may be your crime?/Is it something you do habitually, or is it for the first sweet time?’”
“Sudden Garden” channels Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin to tell you that if you’ll “let a hundred chances bloom,” “You’ll be surprised, at what you’ll find/In the sudden garden of your mind.”
Most of the songs are just too intricately structured to pick apart. You need to listen to the whole thing. So just one more example, from “Icarus,” a shattering (to this father) take on the Greek myth of the boy who flies to the sun – and his death – on wings constructed by his father: “Don’t mourn for the one/Who touched the sun,/Weep for the carpenter/Weep for the carpenter/Who made the wings.”
It’s not like I love every single track von Schmidt put out. His 1972 release, 2nd Right, 3rd Row, drove me crazy, though his other fans seem to like it.. I hated virtually every song except “Fat, Fat the Water Rat,” and even that was iffy. (But it did include a few seconds of Jules Feiffer playing pingpong with Gerald Weales. Weales, like von Schmidt far too little known, was the best teacher I had at UPenn and a superb drama critic.)
Von Schmidt died in 2007. I don’t know how many people noticed, but I’d recommend his Cruel Family album to anyone, anywhere. On Amazon it has only one review – mine.

Listed: Isasa
Isasa, a guitarist and composer based in Madrid, started in punk and hardcore bands in his native Spain, but became fascinated with the American primitive tradition. Inspired by artists including John Fahey, Glenn Jones and Jack Rose, Isasa’s third album Insilioprompted Byron Coley to observe, “Many of the songs (especially those including a single line melody) have a very precise and lovely way of suggesting the future rather than the past.” Jennifer Kelly reviewed the record for Dusted, writing, “Throughout, Isasa pursues his ends with a meditative clarity. Every note seems surrounded by a golden glow, and there is plenty of time to consider the last one before the first intrudes again.” Here Isasa assembles some of his favorites.
Glenn Jones—The Wanting
youtube
When, after a musical hiatus of several years, I picked up the guitar back again, I did not know really what to make of it. I was getting slowly into Mississippi John Hurt and John Fahey’s but, despite how much I love their music, I could not relate to it in a more personal level. What I mean is I could not picture myself composing something similar or in the same style as theirs. Then I discovered Glenn Jones’ music and it stroked me like a lightning bolt. I found everything I was hoping for, a deep connection with a way of playing the guitar and a direction to point all my creativity. Listening to this record made want to work hard in my guitar chops, compose my own music and get to play live again.
Jack Rose—S/T
youtube
The first time I heard Jack Rose music was the intimate performance DVD of his and Glenn Jones that Jesse Sheppard directed called “The Things We Used to Do”. It was shot some months before Jack Rose premature death at 38. His music, the same as Glenn Jones’, really blew my mind away and it still does every time I listen to him. His control of his instrument, his timing, his proficiency at composing and melody are one of a kind. But mostly, he played with an open heart. I cannot tell you enough how much his music means to me. In this self-titled album, he is only playing weissenborn and it is beautiful.
Negro—Formación del espítitu nacional
youtube
Negro is an electric guitarist from Valencia, Spain. Besides being a good friend of mine, he is one of my favorite guitar players around. I think he has a unique voice; he is one of those musicians that just by listening to him one second, you know it is him. His musical universe and approach to the guitar are very personal. This record made me realize it is possible to make great music just by yourself.
Micah Blue Smaldone—The Red River
The Red River (Bonus Track Edition) by Micah Blue Smaldone
I was lucky enough to see a couple of times Micah Blue Smaldone performing solo twice in Madrid, Spain (the city I live in). I love his singing and his guitar playing is just something else. His syncopation and timing are brilliant and remind me many old guitar players as Mississippi John Hurt. Micah is one of those musicians that makes guitar playing look easy.
Borealis—Tumba para un caballo cojo
Tumba para un caballo cojo by borealis
Borealis is an acoustic guitarist from Asturias, Spain. He is a very fine 12-string guitar fingerpicker. His fingerpicking patterns are really original. Some friends of mine call him the “Spanish Robbie Basho”. I have listened to this album a ton of times it inspired me not to be afraid of composing long songs. I think Borealis is very brave in his approach to song structure. I wish he was more known in the American Primitive scene.
Van Pelt—Sultans of Sentiment
youtube
Back the 90’s I was very into emo, alternative, slow core music. The very moment I first listened to this record, I felt in love with their guitar sound and their use of space. There is no trace of rush anywhere and music is just floating around in the air. The way the two guitarist play complementing each other made me think differently on how to fit in a band as a guitarist. I still listen to this record every now and then and I still find inspiration in it.
Karate—S/T
youtube
This is also from my emo/slow core phase when I was in my 20s. Karate’s guitarist, Geoff Farina, is one of my favorite guitar players ever. After Karate broke up, he focused on his solo carrier and has become a blues scholar as well as one of the finest acoustic guitar players I have heard. Following his music career, I discovered Mississippi John Hurt and that was one of the reasons why I decided to focus on fingerstyle guitar.
Chavela Vargas
youtube
Chavela Vargas was one of the greatest Mexican singers (although she was born in Costa Rica, her musical career took place in Mexico). For those of you who may not know her, she is like a Mexican Billie Holiday. She really had to struggle in her life. Her music and her life sometimes got so close that you can feel how she is singing her own life history and not someone else’s lyrics anymore. She managed to have amazing guitar players backing her up most of the times. If you pay attention to the guitar arrangements, you will see what I mean. The sound, the colours of these guitars are a big inspiration to me.
Federico Mompou—Música Callada
youtube
Federico Mompou was a great composer and pianist from Barcelona, Spain. His works for solo piano are just as beautiful as music gets. I love his use of space and economy. He had a way of bringing together familiar melodies and impressionistic chords that I find brilliant. To me, his music is the way the Mediterranean see sounds like.
Bebo Valdes & Cigala—Lágrimas Negras
youtube
Until the release of “Lagrimas Negras” by Cuban piano virtuoso Bebo Valdés and innovative cantaor El Cigala, nobody could imagine that Cuban music and Flamenco could match so nicely without having to compromise each of their musical idiosyncrasy. This record is full of heart-felt performances. It captures the freshness and the connection of two musicians who love each other’s music. Their performance of the Spanish Standard “La bien pagá” was my inspiration to cover that song in my second album “Los días.”

Jester At Work
Jester At Work is a solo project from Italy, focused mainly on songwriting and putting together an introspective mood with a variety of styles and influences: from blues to folk, through desert rock, country and much more, all merged in his own way -funnily named “Adriaticana” after the Adriatic Sea- mostly using a bunch of bizarre-tuned guitars and a particular kind of notebook, which is not a laptop computer at all but his vintage four-track cassette recorder.
His second and last full-length effort “Magellano” was critically praised, so that Jester could play extensively all over Italy both in small clubs and large festivals, both on the beach and over the hills, even in private parties, meanwhile collecting a series of opening gigs with high-profile international artists such as Hugo Race, Duke Garwood, Geoff Farina, Shannon Wright and Sandro Perri, as well as top-notch italian indie acts The Niro, Moltheni, Diaframma, Bud Spencer Blues Explosion and many more, also often sharing the stage with fellow artists Stella Burns and The 59ers.
