The 1st of May 1690 saw Battle of the Haughs of Cromdale.
Please note some sources say this happened on April 30th, and where I agree with them, the battle was a two parter over that day and May 1st, .......
Jacobite Clansmen were defeated by Government Forces under Sir Thomas Livingstone. Despite being a relatively minor encounter, this little known battle marked the effective end of this particular Jacobite rising.
By this point the Jacobites were led by Sir Ewen Cameron, who supported King James. The Jacobites requested aid from King James who was engaged in resisting a threatened invasion of Ireland. He sent arms, ammunition and provisions but also a few Irish officers including Major-General Thomas Buchan, who James instructed would lead the Jacobite forces.
At a meeting at Keppoch of the Jacobite Clans in support of King James agreed to continue with the war but only after the spring. In the meantime Major-General Thomas Buchan and 1,200 infantry would attempt to weaken the British Government forces.
Major-General Thomas Buchan decided to march down through Strathspey in order to try to gain support from clansmen within the Duke of Gordon’s country in Moray. A number of his men deserted reducing his men to 800. A number of his Scottish officers advised him to not advance past Culnakill, however Buchan ordered his men to march down the Spey as far as Cromdale, where he encamped on the last day of April.
Government forces and Clans in support of them, included a 600 strong contingent from Clan Grant, met the Jacobite forces at Cromdale. They were led by Sir Thomas Livingston who commanded a garrison at Inverness. As the Government forces approached, the Jacobites made a brief stand, but on realising they were outnumbered they retreated. A mist came down from the hillside, which allowed most to make their escape resulting in 400 casualties.
James Hogg wrote about the battle in his "Jacobite Reliques" he added some artistic license.......
HAUGHS O' CROMDALE
As I came in by Auchindoun, A little wee bit frae the toun, When to the Highlands I was bound, To view the haughs of Cromdale, I met a man in tartan trews, I speir'd at him what was the news; Quo' he the Highland army rues, That e'er we came to Cromdale.
We were in bed, sir, every man, When the Engligh host upon us came, A bloody battle then began, Upon the haughs of Cromdale. The English horse they were so rude, They bath'd their hooves in Highland blood, But our brave clans, they boldly stood Upon the haughs of Cromdale.
But, alas! We could no longer stay, For o'er the hills we came away, And sore we do lament the day, That e'er we came to Cromdale. Thus the great Montrose did say, Can you direct the nearest way? For I will o'er the hills this day, And view the haughs of Cromdale.
Alas, my lord, you're not so strong, You scarcely have two thousand men, And there's twenty thousand on the plain, Stand rank and file on Cromdale. Thus the great Montrose did say, I say, direct the nearest way, For I will o'er the hills this day, And see the haughs of Cromdale.
They were at dinner, every man, When great Montrose upon them came, A second battle then began, Upon the haughs of Cromdale. The Grant, Mackenzie and MacKay, Soon as Montrose they did espy, O then, they fought most valiantly! Upon the haughs of Cromdale.
The Macdonalds they returned again, The Camerons did their standard join, MacIntosh play'd a bloody game, Upon the haughs of Cromdale. The MacGregors fought like lions bold, MacPhersons, none could them control, MacLaughlins fought, like loyal souls, Upon the haughs of Cromdale.
MacLeans, MacDougals, and MacNeils, So boldly as they took the field, And make their enemies to yield, Upon the haughs of Cromdale. The Gordons boldly did advance, The Frasers fought with sword and lance, The Grahams they made the heads to dance, Upon the haughs of Cromdale.
The loyal Stewarts with Montrose, So boldly set upon their foes, And brought them down with Highland blows, Upon the haughs of Cromdale. Of twenty thousand Cromwell's men, Five hundred fled to Aberdeen The rest of them lie on the plain, Upon the haughs of Cromdale.
As I said about the artistic license, by the time Hogg wrote this Montrose was long dead, having been hung in Edinburgh in May 1650, Cromwell also died in 1658. That aside it is a cracking song, if historically incorrect. Despite the muddled history the song remained popular and many a Highland regiment has marched to the tune of this song, The Corries, as always, do it justice.

All muses on this blog are original characters with bios linked for each, and I'm happy to write them into AUs and crossovers. Please do not steal or reblog my bios/headcaons/etc., as they belong to me. For a full list of rules, see my main. Artists Of The Year 2021 Presented By MSR
So today on the MSR (Midnight Star Report), we will be celebrating the 8 Artists who made this year 2021 special with their music. Let's spend a little time talking about each Artists up next.
The first nominee for 2021 is Jameson Rodgers. Jameson did release his debut album this year which is titled "Bet you're from a small town" which I did a review recently. The main reason Jameson is on the list for the first time is cause of 2 #1 songs. The songs are "Some girls" which really ended last year, & started this year as a top song on my weekly list MSR (Midnight Star Report). The second song features fellow artist of the year nominee Luke Combs on "Cold beer calling my name".
The next nominee for 2021 is Dustin Lynch. Dustin Lynch is another artist grabbing his first artist of the year nominee. Dustin Lynch helped me through some tough times in my life this year with the song "Momma's house". And he has also helped us get introduced to a new artist MacKenzie Porter on the song "Thinkin' bout you" which is a 4 week number one on the Billboard Country Music Airplay Chart at the time of this writing.
We have never had a duo or a group ever been nominated until now. And we will have our first 2 Duos of the years. The first of the 2, I will be talking about is FGL (Florida Georgia Line). FGL haven't had the best success on my weekly charts until now. And in the past I have said and I guess I may stay with this statement that FGL would have the most number ones on my weekly list all-time. My pick for Entertainer of the year winner did come true when Thomas Rhett won recently. So maybe something could happen. FGL scored 2 number ones with "Long live", & "Drinkin' beer. Talkin' God. Amen" with their good buddy Chase Rice. Up next we will talk about the next Duo of the year.
The next duo we have nominated for Artist of the year 2021 is Dan + Shay. This is probably a long time coming, But Dan + Shay scored 2 number ones. Dan + Shay got some success with the song "I should probably go to bed" which was number one around Daylight savings time. And then they gave some upbeat with "Glad you exist". The next four nominees have all been Artists of the year before.
Thomas Rhett is a 3 time artist of the year. He won in 2018, 2020, & 2021. The reason he won this year was with his number ones "What's your Country song", & "Country again". Thomas Rhett finds a way to always score numbers ones on my weekly list. He has 8 number ones so far. Which the rest of the artists on this list do as well, except 1.
Luke Bryan is up next. Luke Bryan is here to celebrate his 3rd artist of the year nomination. Luke has won 2018, 2019, & 2021. Luke scored 2 numbers on my weekly list. Luke Bryan has a song that almost won song of the year in my opinion "Down to one". And Luke also wrote in his opinion the song of the Summer "Waves". But in the 4 years, I have been doing this one artist has won 4 Artists of the year.
Jason Aldean is the only one to win 4 consecutive Artists of the year. Jason has won 2018 to 2021. Jason scored 3 number ones on my weekly list. The songs are "Got what I got", & "Blame it on you", & The massive hit song with Carrie Underwood "If I didn't love you". The song with Carrie finished second on the Ultimate Countdown finishing second to a song to our final Artist of the year nominee.
Luke Combs, what a year he had. Luke scored 5 number one songs this year. For at least the second year in a row he finishes with the song of the year. It might be 3 years in a row, which is why he is a 3 time artist of the year nominee. Luke has won artist of the year for 2019, 2020, & 2021. The song of the year for Luke is "Forever after all". Luke also had number ones with the songs "Lovin' on you", "Better together", "Cold as you" and as previously stated "Cold beer calling my name" with Jameson Rodgers. And Luke has the most number ones on my weekly with 9. But before I go, I would like to say a few things to you all.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and every single blog I post. Thank you also goes out to both CMT (Country Music Television), & the Billboard Country Music Airplay Charts for doing their weekly Country Music Song Countdowns. I just wanted to do my yearly post about the year that we just had. And to also celebrate some of the music and the artists who made this year easier to get through.

If you weren’t accepted, again, we’re so sorry! We loved all of the apps in our inbox, and we truly wish we could have all of you. Remember that acceptances for the Bitch are going to on Thursday, and we’d love to see you then! For everyone who was accepted into our initial opening, the checklist is a good place to start just to get your blogs in order, and as you begin to send in your blogs, I’ll begin inviting people to the ooc discord! Refrain from posting intros or anything for now, and stay tuned for more information on the official opening plan! I’m so happy to have all of you. Welcome to Cherry!
