Being able to explain your emotions to someone in a way they would understand is a difficult task, knowing that I wanted to show the emotion of feeling “helpless” or the “disconnect” you feel towards these emotions in my art piece. Even if the subjects of my paintings aren't the same I sought out to tell a story of processing your emotions to how it feels when showcased with another person. I utilized these different subjects and settings to show that even if the feeling of being “helpless” and “alone” is an emotion everyone can experience, they are vastly different but the same. I wanted to convey both raw emotions are researched based pieces in order to convey different types of this feelingÂ
In all my pieces I position the subject in the middle of the canvas to show how when that the emotions they are feeling are based completely on oneself and not necessarily other people, I did this to show how sometimes that someone can still feel the sense of helplessness even if surrounded by people. The pieces that showcase this are,Velvet Eyes, Unwanted Comfort
Unhelpful Hands, in these pieces the external “help” is represented by hands and eyes by giving the subject a stoic face it shows how even if surrounded by “help” and comfort it seems faceless and has no value to them. I would position Velvet Eyes on top of Performative Emotion with Unhelpful Hands and Unwanted Comfort to the side. I would do this to show the start of not wanting the attention, by placing the Unhelpful Hands and Unwanted Comfort one the sides it shows the two different reactions to physical comfort.
For my research based pieces I didn't just want to focus on different art events/artists. My art piece, Only Women, Not Men, about male rape victims inspired me to pursuit conveying emotions without any words, despite including text into this painting I felt that this was a starting point to try to convey my own personal emotions into painting. For Ignored, I was inspired by the artists Alexander Cabenel, Jaques-Louis David, and Llya Repin. I wanted to use their methods of utilizing the background to tell a story of religion and political figures. I conveyed the feeling of helplessness with having the figure reaching for help from catholic figure that expected to help. Then there's Sudden Change, I based this off of the movement from Cubism to Futurism in the art community, I wanted to show how such a big change can be overwhelming to the point where it goes to the extreme. I would also format these paintings in the same way. With Only Women, Not Men being in the center followed by Ignored and Sudden Change, as they are my researched based pieces, I would have these two on the sides because they are based on movements/artists while Only Women, Not Men being based on a topic.
Having Performative Emotion, at the center of all my pieces shows how you don’t realize what’s going on within a person. I wanted to show with this piece how the figure feels like they have to feel sad and helpless in a “beautiful” way not being able to express themselves and their emotions how they want to instead how they are expected to. This ties into the next piece Falling Apart, where being unable to express these emotions starts to take a toll on your life and eats away at you. By placing these pieces side by side it shows cause and effect.
Throughout all my pieces I wanted to show how the feeling of being helpless affects someone mentally where there's a point in their life where being helped by other people seems more forced than actual comfort than their needed help, but I also wanted to show how it’s not always ugly and someone can live with these emotions in their day to day life.

Anet Garcia Ignored Acrylic on Canvas 59.69 x 90.17 cm
I was inspired by the artists Alexander Cabenel, Jaques-Louis David, and Llya Repin. They conveyed political and biblical figures with common techniques in christian painting a more biblical setting. I showed the catholic figure Mother Theresa. I researched her hospital work in Calcutta. This shows helplessness because growing up Catholic you are taught that Mother Theresa is a savior and loves/helps everyone the same way as God.
