I've read a couple of the 13 Things Children Should Know books before, and I've found them to be genuinely interesting and enjoyable, and even as an adult I find myself learning from them. I decided to give a couple more a try. 13 Art Mysteries Children Should Know by Angela Wenzel covers a variety of different art mysteries that made for really interesting reading. The series focuses on western art, and that's true here too, but it does cover from biblical times to modern mysteries. It's a really fun way to learn about unanswered questions in art history. I included a close up of a giraffe I found particularly terrifying in a Hieronymus Bosch painting. Recommended. Impressionism: 13 Artists Children Should Know by Florian Heine is a fun way to look at the essentials of impressionism as a movement and some of the most significant artists from it. I personally really enjoy the style, so it was great to just look at some of the paintings. I was familiar with a number of the artists and works but not all of them, and I learned lots of interesting tidbits. For example, the last two pictures I've included. Édouard Manet painted A Bundle of Asparagus as a commission and the recipient was so happy that he paid much more than Manet agreed to accept, so Manet painted him a second painting, A Sprig of Asparagus, to add to it. Picked up "Guston in Time: Remembering Philip Guston" by Ross Feld at @skylightbooks Thursday night. I'm having a hard time putting it down. "Advice to myself- Do not make laws. Do not form habits. You do not possess a way- You do not possess a style- You have nothing finally but some "mysterious" urge -to use the stuff-the matter. The Buddhists write— "When you walk, walk—When you sit, sit—but know that you are walking—know that you are sitting." But I am not a Buddhist—even that is denied me. My spirit needs matter—a medium—which resists the peaceful—balanced resolution of forms and spaces. I need a medium through which I can show myself-—to myself-—concretely—tangibly—what I am—what my condition is. Unlike a monk, my self or mind-self is not my medium—/ cannot contemplate myself into myself. I don't know. It could be that the Buddhist's way is an ultimate state which I have not reached. I am not certain if this is true. I doubt it. Yet could it be that it is vain—-for the self to show itself to the self, and also know that this is what is being done, as it is being done, & in such a way that it cannot stop this being done? Last week, I finished "Francis Bacon Revelations" by Mark Stevens and Annalyn Swan. This 800 page tome is probably the best artist bio I've read. Not only do you get a feel for the man and his life but it really gave an in depth look at London and history during his lifetime. Really well written and comprehensive.
