day one of this year's shark week sketch jam - this guy is inspired by the golden hammerhead shark!

for 2023's jam I did a little carved stamp each day; this year, I'm doing (so far pretty dragony) creature designs based around that day's shark. i'm not a specbio or creature design artist by trade, but this sounded like a fun way to play around with just Making Up A Guy and trying out a loose sketch-y way of drawing.

This is my second year entering the GB Pixel Art Jam, and my first time using colour in GB Studio!

The theme for this year was simply "color", and the first things to come to mind were light splitting through triangular prisms, and the D&D spell "Color Spray". From there I knew that I wanted to create some sort of psychedelic illustration with a fantasy feel to it, but it wasn't until I chose the uber bright "Mangavania Palette" that things really started to slot into place!

I'm really proud that I made this within the weekend, and I can't wait to see everyone else's pixel art :)

day two of the shark week sketch jam! this critter was inspired by the bluntnose sixgill shark. when reading about this shark, I saw the common name "cow shark" followed by "this guy forages for food", and went: what if I give him a little basket?

I also tried a new method for doing shine; since these are Damp creatures, I'm thinking a lot about how I can show that texture without getting into the nitty-gritty of it. this guy is particularly slick, so he's got a lot of reflections bouncing around on him! i'll definitely be using this coloring + shine rendering method more.
