Adult Martial Arts Hybrid Striking Program
Our adult self-defense and kickboxing program is a combination of the self-defense techniques taught in Kajukenbo and kickboxing techniques taken from Erik Paulson’s STX Kickboxing program. It combines striking from boxing, Panatukan, Jun Fan Kickboxing, Savate, Taekwondo, and Muay Thai. We are the only school in 4S Ranch or Rancho Bernardo teaching this style.
STX kickboxing lets students learn to combine punch and kick techniques with their elbows and knees. Skills are pulled from each style to work in MM, kickboxing, or self-defense situations. Whether it’s using focus mitts, heavy bags, or drilling with a partner, students get a great workout and can really see a difference in their body and mind only after a few weeks.
This is a great class for dropping some pounds, making some new adult friends, and is appropriate for all skills levels.
Regardless of how big you are or what you may know, everyone who jumps on the mat wants to keep themselves and their loved one’s safe. You’ll learn techniques that will use your opponent’s strengths against redirecting your opponent’s force, especially if they’re bigger or stronger than you, and we’ll match you with a fighting style perfect for your unique speed and body type. With this level of training, you’ll feel limitless in no time!
Master Martial Artist Down The Street
Many 4S Ranch martial arts schools teach a version of Kajukenbo, but we have an edge. Our school has been in the same palace for 15 years, and we’ve done nothing but grow and expand our program. Our Encinitas location has our head instructor, Master Giuseppe Aliotta, just twenty minutes away! He comes in to teach martial arts seminars at our 4S Ranch location all year long. It’s fantastic to have access to someone with such a wealth of knowledge.https://www.4skarate.org/adult-kickboxing-self-defense/

San Diego secrets – A Luxury Travel Blog : A Luxury Travel Blog
By Paul Johnson on Jun 03, 2019 in Attractions, Bars, California, Featured, Food and Drink, Going Out, Leisure Travel, North America, Regions, Restaurants, Speciality Travel, Travel Miscellany, USA
Rubbing elbows with local residents can offer visitors a unique look at a destination, but knowing where to go can be tricky, especially when locals want to keep their favourite hangouts a secret. Amidst San Diego’s vast and varied landscape – ranging from a bustling city centre and colourful neighbourhoods to 70 miles of sparkling coastline – are special spots and neighbourhood gems (some hidden in plain sight) just waiting to be discovered.
From foodie favourites and dive bars to artsy adventures, natural wonders and more, the following is an inside scoop on 16 cool things to do and places to go in San Diego, “California’s beach city”.
Food finds
For dining with a view, look no further than two tried-and-true local favourites. The unassuming and affordable Toby’s 19th Hole Café, nestled atop a hill in the middle of the Balboa Park Golf Course, features incredible views of downtown San Diego, Point Loma and the Pacific Ocean. Since the 1960s, San Diegans have dined and gathered on the romantic 12th floor rooftop of Bertrand at Mr. A’s for views of downtown and San Diego Bay as magnificent as the menu of modern American cuisine. Locals know the best time to visit is during happy hour for affordable drinks with spectacular sunsets.
Visitors can sample local cuisine on a budget by heading to where the locals dine. San Diego diners in the know head to the lively El Zarape Mexican eatery, a neighbourhood favourite with two locations in uptown’s University Heights and Normal Heights, for delicious 99-cent fish tacos – a signature local food staple served day or night.
Phil’s BBQ restaurant, with locations in Point Loma, Rancho Bernardo, Santee and San Marcos, is home of the best barbecue in San Diego. Local cravings for Phil’s mesquite grilled baby back and beef ribs are so strong, folks are willing to wait awhile (upwards of 45 minutes) in line. Insider tip: order ahead by phone for access to a considerably shorter line for order pick-ups.
Touted as the “Best Donuts in the World,” the Donut Bar downtown attracts a line down the block most mornings for its sweet innovative creations. But for a gourmet donut fix sans the wait, check out Nomad Donuts in North Park, known for its savoury vegan donuts, or StreetCar Merchants of Chicken, Doughnuts and Coffee in North Park and La Jolla to enjoy specialty donuts like Salted Nutella Stuffed and Powdered Sugar Peach.
Free beer and dive bars
Visitors to San Diego, America’s Craft Beer Capital, can go behind the scenes and sample tasty craft brews during free tours at Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits and some Karl Strauss Brewery locations.
For karaoke fun second to none any night of the week, head to the popular old-school watering hole The Lamplighter in Mission Hills. Visitors can mix and mingle with locals while joining in rousing renditions of pop and rock songs. Those in need of a little liquid courage to take to the stage and belt out a tune can enjoy stiff, inexpensive drinks served by friendly bartenders.
Serving the funky beach town of Ocean Beach since 1941, visitors can step back in time at the landmark Pacific Shores, a laidback locals’ dive bar featuring an authentic retro vibe, cheap beers and well drinks and a playful marine theme that goes swimmingly with the friendly clientele. It’s especially popular on weekends – prime time for people watching!
Artistic adventures
DJs spin, exotic beverages flow, artworks dazzle and museum visitors glow at the San Diego Museum of Art’s popular sundown series, Culture & Cocktails. Experience art in a whole new way in the heart of Balboa Park. The event, occurring every three to four months, uses current exhibitions as the inspiration for one of San Diego’s most loved party nights. Presale e-tickets are $5 for members, $25 for nonmembers.
Stroll the streets of North Park, where hipsters, art and live music converge during the free Ray at Night, the longest running monthly art walk in San Diego. Experience great local food, live bands, numerous art gallery exhibitions and handcrafted artisan works. The event is held 6-10 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month along Ray Street and the surrounding area.
Natural beauty and recreation
Tucked along the Pacific coast of Point Loma, Sunset Cliffs is a natural wonder of intricately carved coastal bluffs, arches and sea caves that San Diegans tend to keep for themselves as a scenic sanctuary. Take in panoramic ocean views from the cliffs, including pods of California gray whales, which can be seen making their annual migration from the Bering Sea to Baja California and back.
In San Diego’s North County, enjoy one of San Diego’s largest coastal wetlands at the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve. An ADA-accessible Nature Center Loop takes visitors on close-up views of the salt marsh habitat and its birds, plants, fish and animals. The Nature Center offers free guided nature walks every Saturday (except 2nd Saturdays) and Family Fun Days on the first Sunday of each month.
Visitors can find their zen and become one with San Diego’s great outdoors during free oceanfront yoga at the end of Law Street in Pacific Beach. Every Saturday morning from 10-11:30 a.m., this challenging all levels class attracts dozens of locals, leaving participants feeling invigorated and ready to take on the day and explore all that San Diego has to offer.

In the heart of one of San Diego’s most vibrant and artistic neighborhoods, Barons Market has opened its doors to its new North Park. With its first urban store, the family-owned grocery strived to create a market with as much character and charisma as the people who live in the community.
“This store has been tailor-made to embody the distinct culture that makes North Park extraordinary,” says Barons Market Vice President of Marketing Rachel Shemirani. “We infused the character of North Park into every element of this store, from the parking garage to the ceiling, to bring the neighborhood a market that shares its passion for public art and local community.”
At the core of this effort, Barons collaborated with five artists local to North Park and surrounding neighborhoods to create three custom murals – two inside the store and one in the parking garage below.
“In three very different ways, each mural has captured the same sentiment – We love this community, and everyone that makes it so special,” says Shemirani.
In addition to locally designed and crafted murals, Barons worked with Retail Designer Julie Dugas of Studio H2G to transform the 15,000 square-foot space with a style more akin to a modern-day market than a traditional grocery store.Behind its urban décor, Barons Market North Park offers features including products that cost 25-30 percent less than traditional supermarkets, a local coffee corner featuring blends from five local coffee companies including North Park’s Dark Horse Coffee Roasters, more than 400 microbrews with many San Diego craft beer options, an olive oil and vinegar tasting bar, an expanded selection of fresh and all-natural grab-and-go options, a hot soup bar, fresh salad bar and antipasto bar, and an in-store, squeeze-it-yourself orange juice press.
Formerly a Fresh & Easy, the location at 3231 E. University Avenue becomes the market’s seventh Southern California location, joining three San Diego County stores in Point Loma, Rancho Bernardo and Alpine, and three Inland Empire stores in Murrieta, Wildomar and Temecula. Barons Market North Park brings more than 40 jobs to the neighborhood — for which it prioritized hiring locally. This opening comes on the heels of Barons Market’s Murrieta store, which opened in early 2016. This marks the first time the market has opened two locations in one year.
For more information on Barons and its North Park location, visit baronsmarket.com.

Pre-Teen Kickboxing / Self Defense
We have a firm belief that martial arts need to be rooted in being effective. That’s why once our kids reach a certain age, we try to incorporate as many realistic training modalities as possible. There is an aspect of martial arts that requires focus of mind while performing movements that are complex, but these moves aren’t always effective for fighting. We encourage our students to practice what they like, if they enjoy the performance aspects of training that’s great. But at the end of the day, what we teach daily in classes needs to be effective for fighting. If you’re not getting better at self-defense while you are training, then how are you supposed to gain real confidence?
Does Your Pre-Teen Struggle With:
Mood swings that make it difficult to control their actions or emotions
Being bullied or peer pressured into doing things they don’t want to do
Academic pressure that leaves them mentally exhausted without any coping skills
Symptoms of anxiety or even depression like irritability, low self-esteem, inability to focus or concentrate, or always seeming tired
No Self-Control when it comes to eating or just not getting enough physical activity
Kajukenbo For Self-Defense
Our base self-defense system is more than a style, it is a philosophy. Kajukenbo originated with an idea, bring different styles together to try to create the most effective self-defense style possible. Although the idea seems commonplace now, during its time when you weren’t allowed to share your martial arts techniques with outsiders it was taboo. Now you can go online and learn almost anything, and that’s what is truly great about this style. Kajukenbo is a fantastic starting point for someone who is getting into martial arts. You learn to strike self-defense, throws, locks, vital targets of the body, and grab escapes. All of these things are built around concepts that hopefully will help you further your understanding in the martial arts as you continue to grow.
The philosophy of Kajukenbo is to take what works for you and leave the rest behind. For that reason, our head instructor has trained in multiple styles of Kung-fu, stick fighting, Thai boxing, and Brazilian jiu jitsu to try to offer a wide variety of self-defense techniques. Some students prefer to use strikes in a situation, others want to use a throw or a lock. A wide variety of technique options are available.
Kickboxing
Every week we alternate the curriculum between self-defense techniques and kickboxing/sparring techniques. Sparring is a great physical activity meant to develop kids physically and mentally. Kids will have to learn to deal with bigger and faster opponents. They will also need to develop the focus and timing to make their strikes effective.
Confidence comes from kids facing down other students who have been working on the same techniques they have been. Kids learn to strike with speed, but also to have control. We aren’t training amateur fighters, but we do want them to have the skills they need to protect themselves.
Pressure Testing
All 4S Ranch and Rancho Bernardo martial arts schools are teaching students self-defense, but we like to think we do a better job of pressure testing our students. We want our students to feel the tension and aggression from their partners. We want them to feel the adrenaline rush, so they can learn to focus on what they need to succeed in each moment. That’s why we try to get our students to spar as competitively as possible without someone getting hurt.
We also attack our students in a riot suit. Doing different drills and scenarios to try and push them. We black the lights and make them walk through a dark alley, we try to get them to run across the room avoiding the attacker. We do drills where 2-3 people will charge them across the room, forcing them to think quickly and try to survive. We want them to learn self-control and be able to defend themselves against a giant juggernaut parading toward them.
Can My 7-Year-Old Train With Their Older Sibling?
Most of our pre-teen students are 10-13 years old. We have many 4S Ranch and Rancho Bernardo Kids who started karate young and have moved through our younger kids’ curriculum. These kids may be nine years old at the youngest, but have developed the spatial awareness and ability to survive in this older kids’ class despite being younger.
We know the focus for 4S Ranch parents is convenience. There are already so many activities to “uber” your kids to and fro, we offer private lesson programs that allow students to train with their siblings for convenience. That way, you can keep your kids’ martial arts classes together without having to drive to the 4S Ranch business park 4 times a day.
