Arockearer devouring a common rat. The Rockeater The rockeater, unlike the name suggests, is a carnivore that does not eat rocks. The rockeater is indigenous to Kalahari, Sahara, and Arabian deserts. It hibernates for most of its life, with 80% of its body beneath the sand. The rockeater has developed an inter- esting adaptation to life in the desert: it has a rock-like growth on top of its head that also contains its nostrils so it may sleep and breathe beneath the sand at the same time. It is generally a slow creature but highly venomous. It has 2 poisonous fangs much similar to a snake's. The rockeater swallows its prey whole- though the rockeater is not a threat to humans (the largest rockeater on re- cord is twelve inches long). The creature is able to sense its prey nearly a mile away through delicate vibration in the sand. If the prey comes close enough, the rockeater will strike. Above: a topview of a rockeater dormant in sand. Its extra plate on top of its head allows it to blend in with its sandy surroundings, appearing like a regular rock. Note the 2 nostrils on top of its rock-like surface that allow the rockeater to breathe while umder sand.
