During the week of Arny’s convalescence in the security of his familial home, a wicker basket full of apples, painted in shades reminiscent of the changing leaves of early Colossus, awaited on the doorstep one morning. A single envelope of fine paper was tucked amidst the fruits with Arny’s name lettered upon its cream exterior in a sloping script.

Perhaps Annika had forgotten the young Daine had admitted to growing up on a farm at their first meeting and presently had access to an entire orchard in the lands behind his manor...

Dear Arny,

I recently heard from a friend of yours that you had been grievously injured and were relocated to your home. I do hope you are well and that you are making a quick recovery. I know we did not part on the best of terms last we saw each other, but I’m regretful of it and hope you do not think unfavorably upon that evening while recovering.

The apples delivered along with this letter have been, at my request, freshly picked from Claypool’s orchard before being sent to your home. Hopefully, they still capture the taste of sun and trees the way you like. Please enjoy them and accept them as a friendly token from me. Perhaps we can speak again once you’ve returned to campus.

An intricately folded missive, secured with twine and a wildflower commonly found in the meadows around the Daine property tucked beneath, was delivered to the family’s manor two mornings after the young Lord Arnould IV arrived to convalesce. 

The elderly Ms. Greta would have been the first to see it, and she might have been pleasantly surprised, for it was a sight she was familiar with - one that was reminiscent of childish play, clandestine meetings, and messages of aggrandized importance from seasons past. Such a harbinger of innocent affection and joyful memories had not been seen in the Daine household for many years now, though it had once traversed frequently between their manor and the neighboring Farnese property.
