Saudi-led Intervention in Yemen

For more than 1,000 days now, Yemen has been brutalized by a ferocious war characterized by rebels, known as Houthis (Zaidi Shia minority group supported by Iran), and former President Ali Abdullah Saleh loyalists (who was killed in December) campaigning against forces loyal to exiled President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi (supported by Saudi Arabia). Multiple Yemeni tribal militias have aligned with the Hadi government, or the Houthis, or are seeking independence and Al Qaeda and ISIS are both attempting to  seize territory. In 2015, the Saudi-led military intervention includes nine other Middle East and African countries: Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Senegal, Sudan, U.A.E., Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain all took part in the intervention, which was formally named Operation Decisive Storm. Djibouti, Eritrea, and Somalia aided the coalition by opening up their airspace which would make attacks on Yemen’s southern ports possible. Oh but wait... There’s more! The Hadi Regime is receiving additional “indirect” support from the West, of course. Obama has been quoted saying that Yemen (Hadi) would become a symbol of valuable political transformation, “When people resist violence under a common cause.” “Valuable political Transformation”, Yea ok... Hadi and Saleh both killed their own people so maybe not that valuable of a transformation.. Hadi has amassed support from all over the region and is indirectly supported by the West as Great Britain(UK weapons companies have made six billion pounds from Saudi Arabia since it started bombing Yemen) , The U.S.(billions of arms sales under Obama and now $1.4 billion in military training and equipment to the Saudis under Trump), Germany ($134 million worth of military equipment to Saudi and UAE), France (18 $bil to Saudi)and Canada ($140 Mil of weapons to Saudi, Thanks Trudeau!) sell their weapons to Saudi Arabia; thus, swiftly breaking international law and the 2014 Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), which bans exports of conventional weapons that fuel human rights violations or war crimes. After a thousand days of airstrikes, civil war, suicide attacks, cholera outbreaks, and near-famine conditions have taken enormous tolls on the men, women, and children of Yemen.

UN Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty

The Arms Trade Treaty Conference begun at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on July 2nd, and will take place until 27 July 2012. Negotiations will be carried out by the 193 Member States of the UN. In addition, hundreds of representatives from non-governmental organizations, public interest groups, the arms industry, media and inter-governmental organizations will attend.

Concerned by the misuse of weaponry around the world, civil society organizations have successfully mobilized governments and parliamentarians to call for the global regulation of the conventional arms trade. Countries have discussed the matter within the UN since 2006, and are set to negotiate an Arms Trade Treaty during this year's Conference.
