“Abattoir Remorse” • Now on display in Chico State’s ceramics studio (Fall 2017) this piece carries a hidden message on the inside of the mask reading “Men Such As I Shall Look Upon The Murder of Animals As We Now Look Upon The Murder of Men” by Leonardo Da Vinci, a heavy inspiration to Charles Darwin who would write “On the Origin of Species” where he argued tirelessly to bridge the mental gap between humans and nonhuman animals. • The ear tag carries the initials of Peter Singer, an animal rights philosopher who gifted philosophy with his theory of the expanding circle, and the numbers “06”, which signifies the year Upton Sinclair first published his pamphlet on slaughterhouses entitled “The Jungle” • I have thought a lot about what our kin hundreds of years from now will pity us for and the most striking thought is our apathetic attitude towards animals and their treatment for merely dietary needs. I challenge anyone who claims to love animals to think about what it means to love another conscious being and question whether you love merely pets or do indeed love animals. Work to expand your circle to as many sentient creatures as possible and watch as circles encompass you. • This is my first real ceramics piece that I dedicated myself to. I hope it brings you both self-reflection and provokes your mental appetite for who matters. Enjoy. • #ceramics #animals #animal #animalrights #plantbaseddiet #philosophy #art #3D #3Dart #armchairphilosophy #petersinger #animalliberation #animallivesmatter #vegetarian #vegan #vegetariandiet #vegetarianism #speciesism #remorse #slaughterhouse (at California State University, Chico)

The Signposts of Life and Their Archaeological Curators
We spend our lives defending ourselves to ourselves for those things which we both consider and don’t consider to be part of ourselves, against the idea of what will have been. We hold our destiny, but spend a lifetime wishing this thing or that could be different. Life is a tangle of paths upon which we are constantly making decisions, which way to go, this place or that, based on the signposts…

"Cities were always like people, showing their varying personalities to the traveler. Depending on the city and on the traveler, there might begin a mutual love, or dislike, friendship, or enmity. Where one city will rise a certain individual to glory, it will destroy another who is not suited to its personality. Only through travel can we know where we belong or not, where we are loved and where we are rejected." It's All About The Atmosphere
What was the best party you've ever been to? Think about it for a moment. It could have been a house party, a nightclub, a music festival, or any other type really.  What was it about that party that was so special? Or, what was it about all of the best parties that you loved? What elements did they have in common? A lot of it goes into the pre-planning. The physical space needs to be set up in such a way that it is open and conducive to allowing social connections to form. The lighting needs to be just right to create the perfect ambiance and atmosphere. The music needs to set the right mood. The right amount of people need to be there; not too crowded, and not too empty. The logistics of how people get there, get home, and get in and out need to be considered. The less friction and hassle, the more fun people will have. All of these elements (and several more) create the intangible quality that separates an amazing experience from a horrible one. By putting a lot of thought into them beforehand, it is possible to create a memorable experience for people; a sub-culture that fosters a cohesive vibe that leaves everyone feeling better off for being a part of it. On the other hand, poor planning can create a more hostile, frustrating, and negative overall experience. It can actually cause people to become less happy than when they arrived, and generate new negative loops and drama rather than building connections. In a party environment that is planned out poorly, the exact same people in the exact same place can have a completely different experience. They can create a completely different sub-culture. Suppose the doormen are unnecessarily hostile. There is nowhere to leave your coat. The lines are too long. The music sucks. The lighting is way too bright. The space is not laid out correctly. People are crammed in like sardines. There is an excessive amount of testosterone in the place. In this type of party, the chances of some kind of conflict breaking out are much higher. You could take the same group of people, and by putting them in the wrong environment -- in a poorly planned culture that is designed to fail -- they will act differently. They may blame the conflict on something in their immediate vicinity. Someone stepped on their shoe. Someone looked at them the wrong way. Someone was acting inappropriately towards their girlfriend. But these are only the symptoms of the problem. This is not the root cause. The root cause was that the environment was set up in such a way where this type of thing was more likely to happen.  In a similar manner, right now, we can see conflicts between different groups of people all over the place. But it's very important to understand that nearly everyone is simply responding to the cultural systems that they were born into.  We're so focused on yelling at the person who stepped on our shoes that we don't question why the space wasn't simply made large enough to where that would never have been a problem in the first place. We're so busy fighting with everyone else in line that we don't stop and realize that it's not them who we are upset about. It's the systems we've set up that cause these behaviors. Put too many cars on a highway with too few lanes, and people are going to beep at one another. It's not so much that those people are bad people. It's that the particular system was designed poorly long before those people ever got behind the wheel of a car. Or, the system simply became outdated, and we never took the time to rethink it. Right now, as a species, we are playing a losing game. Stepping over one another to acquire more stuff leads us to treat other people as economic entities, rather than fellow human beings. This makes us feel isolated and unhappy, leading to the need for more stuff to try and fill the void. But the cup has a hole in it. So it's a never ending chase of scarcity. Work to create a paradigm by which everyone has enough accommodations; and conflict becomes largely unnecessary.

Autumn Song
this way flees the sparrow, this way speeds the arrow, this way hides the stalker among the trees.
a smattering of footsteps on frozen grass tripping trying to trick the hourglass, it’s the creeper in the trees who will see your last, but he can do nothing with what he sees. just shakes his tears on darkened ground, his light fading in the years, hunting and haunted, playing make believe.

The Hero Is A Cat Who Shows Herself From the Dark On Occasion
The Hero Is A Cat Who Shows Herself From the Dark On Occasion
heroes are within. the admirable qualities of the other have always been there right along with the rotten ones. it is just the manager hired a flunky to hold the spotlight of your perception on one ingredient and you took it for the entire recipe.
