Musings on the night
But how you'd please me, night! without those stars Whose light speaks in a language I have known! Since I seek for the black, the blank, the bare!
Charles Baudelaire, Flowers of Evil: A Selection
Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi, Moonlit Night on the Dnieper (1882)
But it so happens that I hear the night weep in my bones. Her immense teardrop raves mad and shouts that something has gone away forever.
Alejandra Pizarnik, The Last Innocence: The Lost Adventures
J. M. W. Turner, Fishermen at Sea (1796)

"Moonlit Night on the Dnieper" by Arkhip Kuindzhi (1841 - 1910)
This wonderful painting is at the "State Russian Museum" in Saint Petersburg (the museum is housed in the Mikhailovsky Palace.) The State Russian Museum is the former "Russian Museum of His Imperial Majesty Alexander III," established by Nicholas II in honor of his father.
This painting was purchased from the artist's work-shop by Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich, who was so fond of it, he took it to sea with him while he was doing his naval training.
Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi was a landscape painter from the Russian Empire. He studied painting mainly independently and at the Saint Petersburg Art Academy. He was a co-partner of traveling art exhibitions (Peredvizhniki.) In his mature period, Kuindzhy aspired to capture the most expressive illuminative aspect of the natural condition

ivory scorpion, jewel knight, cornflower pony
ivory scorpion – if you were in a video game, what would your main outfit look like? (bonus: what’s your weapon?)
i’m envisioning myself in skyrim- cause sadly it’s my favorite game to play -and i’d be in some sort of entirely black hooded garb, something lightly armored & perfect for stealth- very assassins creed-esque. & my go-to weapon will always be bow & arrow, & or occasionally a crossbow.
jewel knight – if you became famous for something, what would you hope that something is?
i wanted to be able to answer this one with something noble but in all honesty, in another life i’d want to be recognized for a creative work of mine. i pour my heart into my writing, & acting & in the experiences i’ve been able to have in those arts that i love, & i can’t stop myself from wishing i could be recognized for creating something or being a part of something that inspires others.
cornflower pony – you fall into a paint- as easily as you would a puddle -and become a part of it. what painting would you most want to be a part of?
impossible question to answer, but atm i’m thinking of the art i’m using for my header rn– red sunset on the dnieper by arkhip ivanovich kuindzhi.

Red Sunset on the Dnieper by Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi, russian artist
The main thing that you have to remember on this journey is just be nice to everyone and always smile. Refreshingly, what was expected of her was the same thing that was expected of Lara Stone: to take a beautiful picture. We woke reasonably late following the feast and free flowing wine the night before. After gathering ourselves and our packs, we headed down to our homestay family’s small…

Kuindzhi’s style is exemplified here by the minimalist composition and dramatic light, color, and clouds. The site has been identified as the river called the Dnipro in Ukrainian (Russian, Dniepr; Belarusian, Dnyapro), which runs south through the three countries to the Black Sea. He is considered one of the most talented Russian landscape painters of his generation. He was associated with a group of Russian Realist painters ‘ Peredvizhniki’ (sometimes translated as the Wanderers),

Arkhip Kuindzhi (1842(?) – 24 July 1910) was a landscape painter born in Mariupol but spent his youth in the city of Taganrog. He grew up in a poor family and when he was six years old he lost his parents. He received the rudiments of an education from a Greek friend of the family who was a teacher and then went to the local school. In 1855, at age 13–14, Kuindzhi visited Feodosia to study art under Ivan Aivazovsky.
From 1860 to 1865, Arkhip Kuindzhi worked as a retoucher in a photography studio in Taganrog. He tried to open his own photography studio, but without success. After that Kuindzhi left Taganrog for Saint Petersburg. He studied painting mainly independently and at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. Later Kuindzhi lectured at the academy as professor-head of the landscape workshop but was fired in 1897 for supporting students' protests. Among his students were artists such as Arkady Rylov, Nicholas Roerich and Konstantin Bogaevsky.
