[ he/him, cis man ] greetings to all of our listeners! we start today’s potterwatch with a long-awaited update on gabriel longbottom who was finally spotted alive just last night, wandering the streets of london. for those of you who haven’t tuned in before, they are a twenty-nine year old muggleborn gryffindor alum who works as an auror. they are oddly reminiscent of constant scruff on his face, hands bruised from a rough night prior, fingertips always tapping against whatever surface is in front of him, random sketches, empty rooms full of empty chairs and the raw instinct to survive which makes sense considering their protective, diligent, selflessness, judgemental, impulsive, and short-tempered nature. you might know of them as the adopted child of hannah and neville longbottom, and we’re sure that their family will be relieved to hear they’re safe and sound — or at least as much as you can be, in times like this. to all our listeners, if you catch a glimpse of someone who looks a bit like that muggle sean teale, that’s them. before approaching, please be aware that they’re rumored to be affiliated with the erinyes, so best proceed with caution. these are dangerous times we’re living in. well, thanks for tuning in, folks. we’ll play ourselves out with i know the end by phoebe bridges.

Bio:

Gabe lost his biological parents rather young. He remembers the night very clearly. They were visiting his mother's sister who was a witch though at the time, Gabe didn't know. He just knew he was going to visit his cousins and they were going to just have a get together for fun. The magical gene had skipped his mother and they didn't know if Gabe would inherit it though both of Amelia's children had. His aunt was a very well known auror, a powerful witch that had been the reason behind many death eaters being put in Azkaban. Gabe was only 7 though he was a loud and cheerful child. He liked to push limits with rules but he was never rude, just mischievous.

He remembers how his cousins had gone to get snacks, they were older than him, 12 and 14 but they were always very welcoming and would tell Gabe lots of stories about the school they went to and while they never lied to him, he always just thought they were playing pretend with him. Things were normal and then it all happened so quickly. Gabe heard a loud crash and screaming from downstairs and before he could really think through, his feet led him downstairs but he stopped before reaching the end of the stairs. He was the last person his aunt saw as she shook her head while giving him a look to not come down before they casted the killing curse on her. The bright green light was blinding but Gabe did his best to make himself small and hide himself from being seen.

There was laughing and he remembers them dressed in weird cloaks with their faces covered and though he wanted to cry, his fear paralyzed him. They left and he sat there confused, unaware of what to do and too afraid to go downstairs to see that everyone but him had been killed. Aurors had heard news about the sudden attack but when they arrived it was too late. Unaware if Gabe was going to be a wix or not, they decided to take him to an orphanage in the wizard world, explaining to him that the stories his cousins had told him weren't just wild fantasies and they were right to do so. He began to show signs of magic though they weren't the best. Gabe had become withdrawn and rarely listened anymore. No matter what kind of punishments or discipline that was attempted with him, he just didn't care. He threw tantrums or he'd talk back, disobey any chance he got. Maybe it was the guilt that he was the only one left. Why didn't his aunt just let him come down? What made him special enough to be spared? Or maybe he just wasn't worth anything. Either way, it just kept feeding into his anger. He was angry that the world had taken his family from him and even more so when he was explained the reasoning behind it.

All because of some stupid blood status, he had lost his parents, his family-- in the blink of an eye he was alone and they hadn't caught the people who did it. That perhaps just added fuel to the fire. No one wanted to adopt him and the matron of the orphanage was sure he would just age out as no one typically wanted to adopt any of the more 'troubled' kids. He received his letter to Hogwarts though there wasn't much excitement. There rarely was now a days. Right as he was supposed to head to Hogwarts however, a couple had asked to meet him. They were the kindest people even though he wasn't all that receptive. After a long conversation with him, they had told him that he would be coming home with them which surprised him. He hadn't thought he was all that impressive or that he was worth much for them to choose to take him and yet they did. Despite the kindness, Gabe was still very much shut off. Defying rules, pushing his limits with the thought that perhaps they'd give up on him because he didn't feel deserving to have a good life. Though with patience, love and guidance, soon Hannah and Neville began to get through his rough exterior.

Even with his siblings, the other kids that he had learned had been adopted, it took some time for Gabe to open up. It took time to allow himself to love them out of fear of losing them again. If he was meant to be in this world that had people who went after his aunt for doing good then why should he get attached? He learned about Neville and Hannah's background and for a moment his walls came back up. Too afraid to love them and have them taken from him but they were never ones to simply give up and so Gabe began to change and believe in their words and the things they were fighting for.

During Hogwarts, Gabe was sorted into Gryffindor which he had found out his aunt was also a part of. Gabe took some time to come around but by his third year of Hogwarts, he was excelling in his classes and doing his best against those who were taking the wrong path though fear still lingered in the back of his mind. He wasn't someone who made friends easy at first, his short temper coming in random moments where he'd split on people without meaning to. Slowly with the help of his family who had learned to love with all his heart and his friends who were also patient with him, he changed his mindset on things.

After graduating, he wanted to both honor his parents' and the way they were fighting for good and also honor his aunt who he still believes is the reason that he is still alive today. With all the chaos around them, he wanted to protect and do what was needed to ensure that the darkness that was brewing could be stopped before it escalated too quickly and so he went into auror training and also joined the knights. Though he soon realized over the years that the rules that were set in place were often set backs and he often disagreed with a lot of the way things were done. He believed that sometimes you had to fight fire with fire and would often be turned down or reminded that stooping down to their level would just make them as bad as they were. He swallowed his anger and bit his tongue as he attempted to be what his father and mother would want but losing Neville made something in him snap as he hadn't been in favor of what the knights had agreed to do. That was a rule that he did not think should've been broken. Death was cunning and clever and he had a bad feeling from the beginning.

After losing his father, he broke away from the knights and with his most of his siblings, formed the erinyes. He's become tired of all the pointless deaths that could've been stopped had they just taken the right precautions and had made a vow to ensure that he does his best to ensure there's an end in sight however it's clear that he's slowly losing himself in his own darkness again but he's too blinded by his grief and anger to care anymore.

・Sometimes Harry can drift off into his own thoughts, and you bring him back down to earth. 

・He’s worried that his scar will hurt again, and the evil he sacrificed so much for, will come back. You have to remind him that Voldemort will never come back. 

・You visit Hermione and Ron a lot. Weekly actually. 

・You have a dog, your own owl, and a cat that had once been a stray

・You both have PTSD. Harry’s is because of childhood trauma, Voldemort and all the horrors that he’s had to face throughout his time at Hogwarts. 

・He always makes sure the doors are locked and there are multiple protective enchantments around the house. 

・There are photographs of Dumbledore and McGonnagal on the wall near the entrance

・And you tell Harry that even though Snape was in love with his mother, it didn’t mean he was absolved of all his wrongdoings. 

・Hagrid loves coming over, but he can’t fit in the house so you make tea and biscuits for outside

But it was a moment in your relationship that you will cherish forever. One night, after you had your dinner and were settled on the couch, you turned to Harry and asked him why he only called you by your name. 

    “I-well...” Harry’s cheeks went pink and he was finding it difficult to look at you. 

You were silent, letting him find his words. 

   “I don’t know...what to call you?”

“Oh!” Your worries dissipated. They had been building for months, little thoughts here and there that Harry didn’t really love you. “I’ll come up with a list, and you can choose which ones you think fit me best.” 

So Harry liked ‘darling’, ‘sweetheart’, and ‘love’ the best.

You stood alone on the landing, listening to the murmur of the party downstairs. The Hogwarts teacher’s annual start of term party was held in Professor McGonagall’s home, where she lived during the summer and the holidays. Neville had been offered a position on the staff, a job he had coveted for years, so he had brought you along of course. After dating since the end of school, it was only natural that you attended. Though you hated crowds and you wished that he had gone alone. 

Large crowds and loud noises always reminded you of the battle, a night that had left you broken beyond repair. You could no longer watch fireworks or shop in busy stores, your life becoming a series of avoiding triggers. Neville tried his best to understand. He could to some extent- he had come out of the war with his own set of issues- but he could never seem to grasp just how truly shattered you were. You worried how it affected him when you were reminded of that horrible night. He would try to calm you down but you’d just snap at him and yell; Neville would try his best to pick up your broken pieces but your sharp edges would do nothing but pierce his skin. You knew you weren’t good for him, but some selfish part of you couldn’t bear to leave him. 

The party had gotten a bit too boisterous for you as Professor Flitwick had consumed too much champagne and was now showing off every charm he knew. The flashes of light and the booming had made your breath shorten and your chest constrict, so you had stolen away to the second-floor landing. You sat alone on the stairs as a classical muggle song began to play, swirling your champagne around in your glass. 

You heard footsteps and you looked up quickly, not wanting to explain yourself to a stranger. Instead, you were met with the warm eyes of your boyfriend and relief flooded through your veins. 

“There you are,” he muttered softly as he moved to stand in front of you, his hands shoved in the pockets of his new dress pants. You smiled weakly at him and shrugged. Neville held out a hand, his eyebrow raised and his eyes sparkling. 

“Dance with me?” he asked. You rolled your eyes playfully and gave him an exasperated smile. He was trying to cheer you up, most likely understanding why you had hidden away. You placed your drink down on the step before standing up and taking his hand. He placed a hand on your waist and you tangled your fingers with his, resting your head on his shoulder. The two of you drifted slowly to the music, ignoring the noise from downstairs. You felt your body begin to relax as you melted into his touch. Neville suddenly took a deep breath.

“I love you, (Y/n),” he said softly into your hair before pressing a kiss to your temple. The corners of your lips quirked up into a small smile.

“I love you too, Nev,” you replied. Neville pulled back a bit, searching your face with an odd expression in his eyes. You saw him reach for his pocket and move to kneel and your face went slack. You dropped his hand, letting yours fall limply to your side.

“Neville…” you said softly, your voice panicked. 

“(Y/n), I love you more than words can express,” he began, a prepared speech running through his mind. You cut him off by reaching for his hand to stop it from reaching into his pocket. You felt tears well in your eyes and panic swell in your chest.

“Neville, please,” you whispered, “ Don’t.” Neville faltered, his face falling slightly. 

“What?” he whispered back, clearly not understanding your response. You looked away and bit the heel of your hand, attempting to hold back tears. 

“I can’t. I can’t marry you,” you said after a moment, finally gathering your words. Neville stood up straight and let out a breathy laugh. 

“Of course you can, we love each other,” he said, running a desperate hand through his hair. 

“I do love you Neville but I can’t. I can’t do that to you,” you responded, your voice thick. Neville scoffed.

“Do what to me? Love me? Make me happy? Spend the rest of your life with me?” he asked, his whispers becoming harsher. You shook your head.

“You won’t be happy with me,” you pleaded, “I’m too broken and you can’t fix me.” With every word you spoke Neville shook his head and looked away, his jaw tense and his fists clenched. 

“You’re not too broken to be loved. I love you and that should be enough,” he said, refusing to meet your eyes. You let out a shaky breath and crossed your arms over your body.

“Nev, someday you’ll find someone who isn’t ruined and they’ll give you what you deserve. I can’t do that, but someone else can,” you said, staring at the cracks in the floorboards. Neville took a step forward suddenly, reaching for you but stopping himself. He stood close, his forehead almost touching your own.

“I don’t want anyone else, I want you,” he said softly. You blinked back tears and avoided his gaze, wringing your hands together.

“Soon, this won’t hurt anymore and you’ll have a new person, a new me, and you’ll realize that I was never good enough for you to begin with,” you answered before stepping back. You grabbed your champagne and downed it before heading towards the stairs, desperate to escape the party and Neville’s heartbreak. Before you could reach the bottom of the flight Neville spoke again, causing you to pause.

“It’s my mom’s ring,” he said so softly you could hardly hear it. You turned around to see him holding the ring in his fingertips, staring down at the stone. “I went to visit them, my parents, and I told them about you. Something about you or the way I talked about you pulled her out of her own madness for a moment. I saw it in her eyes, she was herself for just a second. Just long enough to pull the ring off her finger and put it in my hands,” he said, not daring to look at you. You searched your mind for something to say, for words that could somehow make this situation okay. But your mind came up empty. 

“I’m so sorry Nev,” you finally settled upon before dashing out of the party, leaving Neville standing crestfallen on the landing with his mother’s ring in his hand.

How he had even been placed into the class was beyond him. His guidance counselor had given him the exact reason why when he asked if it were possible for him to swap (something about him being “capable” of handling the tough work since he had such a good GPA, as if that was somehow an indicator for how well he’d do in a class he’d never taken before), but it still made no sense to him. And the longer he stared down at the pages of his textbook, the more he found himself wishing that he’d pushed just a little bit harder to be put into earth science instead.

He was a goddamn senior , for Christ’s sake. This was his last year in the hellhole that is high school. Wasn’t this supposed to be an easy year? Seeing as he already was accepted into his college of choice, it should be smooth sailing going forward. So why was he struggling in such a difficult course? Absolutely nothing made any sense.

What arguably made everything even worse was the fact that it was obnoxiously hot out. It was mid-September -- wasn’t fall supposed to be starting soon? Shouldn’t the temperatures be going down? Neville shouldn’t be sweating like this at this time of year. It simply didn’t feel right.

He groaned as he adjusted his position on the bed so that he was sitting up, crossing his legs and brushing his hair out of his face. He looked over to the window that was next to his bed. He knew it probably wouldn’t help too much, but getting a little breeze in the room might make the study experience just a little more tolerable. He still wouldn’t understand the material, but at least he wouldn’t be suffocating.

He reached over and undid the lock on the window, and he was just about to slide it open when he froze. He could hear the unmistakable sound of the lawn mower starting up just outside of his house. Was this that guy that his parents hired? He vaguely remembered his dad mentioning something earlier that day about getting someone to mow the lawn for them (“Since we all know that you won’t do it, Adrian.”), but he didn’t think that the guy would be coming so soon. Of all the times that this guy could have come, he came when Neville was in the middle of working? (Not that he was making much progress anyway, but still.)

Neville’s hands slowly fell from the window pane down to his sides, defeated. He sighed and flopped back down onto his stomach, lazily looking at the pages in front of him again. Everything made just as much sense now as it did a few moments ago -- that is to say, it made no sense at all. He tried reading the contents aloud, both to drown out the sound of the mower and to see if it could help him understand the material better, but it was a fruitless endeavour. In the end, he just couldn’t fucking concentrate.

Why didn’t I just mow the damn lawn myself…? Neville wondered to himself as he rolled onto his back, staring up at the ceiling. It would have been a great excuse not to study, and when he finally did get around to it he wouldn’t have to deal with any obnoxious distractions. He would find himself distracted by something far less annoying instead. His own laziness had gotten him into this situation.

A few more minutes passed. Neville had just finished counting the cobwebs that were lingering in the corners of his bedroom for what seemed like the millionth time, and that guy was still outside working. Who even was he, anyway? All this complaining on Neville’s part, yet he still didn’t have any clue who the damn guy was or what he looked like. Curiosity getting the better of him, he looked back over to the window, taking a little peak outside.

Oh.

Neville’s timing was as good as ever. He wasn’t able to get a good look at the guy’s face, but he definitely got a look at his muscular torso. Apparently the heat outside had become too much for this guy to bear, and he’d opted to remove his shirt -- which, in itself, wasn’t a crime or anything.

But it did embarrass Neville to no end.

He quickly moved back from the window, licking his now dry lips and staring around his bedroom. There were so many more interesting things for him to be looking at -- his messy closet that desperately needed to be organized, the many video game posters hanging on the walls, that one spot in the corner of his room where his seven year old self had insisted on coloring instead of using paper.

All of this, and he still couldn’t get this guy out of his mind.

Neville fell back onto the bed, his head hitting the pillow, and he rubbed at his eyes with the heels of his hands until he could see stars. It had been a long time since he last felt this way about someone. There were still some times where he questioned his sexuality, where he thought that maybe he still just hadn’t met the right girl yet, but there would be an occasion where he would see this one guy and know that he was right on the money.

This was without a doubt one of those occasions.

How pathetic was it that he was letting himself get this flustered over this guy? This complete stranger who he’d only just seen for the very first time less than ten minutes ago? Was Neville really this soft? How did he plan on legitimately entering the dating world if he was instantly turned to putty the moment he got a look at another guy’s physique? There was a reason why he’d been single up until that point (besides the rampant homophobia that plagued his neighborhood).

...At the same time, as much as Neville was scolding himself for letting himself get so rattled, there was still a part of him that was very curious and wanted to take another look.

The rational side of Neville was screaming at him to forget about it and go back to work, but he ignored it, approaching the window again and looking down at the person on his lawn. He was able to get a better look at him this time. If he had to take a guess, this guy was around his age, maybe a year older than him at most. He had a cute face, too -- pairing it with the rest of his body, he was gorgeous. Before he could stop himself, Neville was staring.

It was interesting, though, how Neville couldn’t remember seeing him before. If they were the same age, then he must go to a different school -- he definitely would have remembered seeing him around the halls. He couldn’t remember seeing him around the neighborhood either. Then again, it wasn’t like Neville really paid too much attention to the people who lived near him. The extent of his participation in local events was the annual end-of-summer barbecue, which was supposed to be taking place the following weekend if he remembered correctly, and he spent the whole thing sitting in the corner and playing on his phone. He’d be damned if he actually knew who was who--

Wait, did he just wave ?

Neville’s eyes widened once he realized that the guy on his lawn was now looking directly at him, what looked like a coy smile on his face. His hand was raised in a wave and-- oh, God , did he just wink too?!

Without thinking, Neville jumped away from the window, almost falling off of the bed in the process. He steadied himself by taking hold of the sheets, burying his burning face into his pillow and letting out an agitated sound. He’d been caught red handed. He wasn’t careful, and this attractive stranger had spotted him staring.

Neville still wasn’t entirely sure who this person was.

But he was desperate to find out.
