June in France and Spain - from Avignon to Laredo
Monday 19th - Wednesday 21st - We had a great trip to Spain through the foothills of the Pyrenees. First stop not long off the motorway from Avignon to Carcassonne was just south of Foix - campsite was on the side of a lake and had lovely pool - most welcome as the heat from Provence was still with us. We were quite struck that the Ariege department seemed relatively down at heel compared to the rest of France we had passed through. Second night was near St Jean Pied de Port. Quite hard to find the camp site but worth it when we got there. Nice views and another lovely pool! Onward the next day into Spain to Laredo not far from Bilbao to meet up with Will and Josephine - our motorhome companions.

PARIS: Wildfires burned tracts of land in France and Spain at the weekend as Europe sweltered in record-breaking temperatures that pushed the mercury towards all-time highs on Sunday in Germany, killing at least seven people.
Temperatures in France’s southern Gard region hit an all-time high of 45.9 degrees Celsius (114.62F) on Friday — hotter than in California’s Death Valley — sparking scores of fires that burned 550 hectares of land and destroyed several homes and vehicles.
One man died while competing on Saturday in a cycling race in the southwestern Ariege region, in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The 53-year-old crashed after feeling unwell, local public prosecutor Laurent Dumaine said on Sunday, adding police were investigating the precise cause of death.
The race was called off after several participants were taken sick due to the heat, organisers said.
Another cyclist died in the southern region of Vaucluse, with authorities attributing the man’s collapse to the heatwave. Meteorologists say a weakening of the high-level jet stream is increasingly causing weather systems to stall and leading summer temperatures to soar. Five of Europe’s hottest summers in the last 500 years have happened in this century.
Some 25 out of around 90 administrative departments in France have adopted limits on water use including for agriculture, which could affect harvest yields for summer crops like maize that are often irrigated.
“The heatwave has also hit the vineyards of Herault, widespread damage observed,” Jerome Despey, a wine producer in France’s southwestern Herault region and head of the local chamber of agriculture said on Twitter, posting photos of shriveled grapes. In Spain, 40 out of 50 regions have been put under weather alert with seven of them considered to be an extreme risk, the national weather agency said. Temperatures in Girona, in northeastern Spain, reached 43.9 degrees on Friday — the highest ever recorded in the Catalan city.
Most of the wildfires that hit Spain in recent days were stabilized over the weekend, but firefighters were struggling to control a blaze in the central provinces of Toledo and Madrid, that has burned more than 20 sq km (7.7 sq miles) since Friday.
Temperatures eased slightly on Sunday although the Spanish national meteorological agency predicted the mercury could stay over 40 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country, in particular in the northeast.
At least seven heat-related deaths have been reported in recent days: In addition to the two French cyclists, two people have died in Spain and three in Italy.
Germany’s weather service warned of “extreme” heat on Sunday, forecasting peak temperatures of up to 39 degrees Celsius from Saxony in the east to the upper Rhine in the west. That’s just below an all-time high of 40.3 Celsius.
In Frankfurt, 3,000 athletes took part in an IronMan endurance race despite the heat. Female race leader Sarah True of the United States collapsed within a kilometre of the finish line of the closing marathon stage.

BAGNERES-DE-LUCHON, France | Tour riders sprayed with tear gas amid protest by farmers

BAGNERES-DE-LUCHON, France | Tour riders sprayed with tear gas amid protest by farmers
BAGNERES-DE-LUCHON, France  — Chris Froome was among a group of riders whose eyes needed treatment when police intervened with tear gas to disperse farmers protesting funding cuts by disrupting the Tour de France on Tuesday.
Bales of hay blocked the road 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) into the 218-kilometer stage from Carcassonne to Bagneres-de-Luchon. Tour organizers said police used tear gas to disperse the protesters as the peloton approached.
Four-time champion Froome, race leader Geraint Thomas, and world champion Peter Sagan were among those affected by the chemical. Froome was treated with eye drops and Sagan poured water over his face to clean his eyes.
Stage 16 resumed after a 15-minute delay.
Tour director Christian Prudhomme condemned the farmers’ action and demanded more respect for riders.
“The road should remain free, we are not going to lock the riders in a stadium or on a tennis court,” he said. “The riders’ job is extremely dangerous, they are taking risks every day, people should not block the road, no matter what causes they are fighting for.”
Belgian classics specialist Greg Van Avermaet said race organizers made a good decision by neutralizing the stage, allowing the peloton to resume competing after three kilometers.
“I was not affected because I was not in the first 10 of the group,” he said. “I heard some of the guys had problems so I thought it was a good decision to stop and wait and bring everything together.”
According to French media, the small group of farmers from the local Ariege department made the intervention to protest the reduction of European Union funding.
This Tour has been marred by incidents.
Race organizers have struggled to deal with angry fans protesting Froome’s participation. After fans threw flares at riders in the climb to the ski resort of Alpe d’Huez, Tour organizers banned the use of smoke flares for the rest of the race.
Froome raced all season under the cloud of a potential ban for using twice the permitted level of salbutamol during his victory at the Spanish Vuelta in September. He was cleared only just before the Tour. He said he has been repeatedly spat at since the race started, and spectators have punched him and tried to make him fall off his bike.
Froome remained second in the general classification, 1 minute, 39 seconds behind Sky teammate Thomas.
