I am geniunely so curious on why Bisco Hatori decided to put Antonio Gramsci on the twins' t-shirts for the illustration on the back of manga vol 2.
My knowledge is that she takes costume inspiration from reference books but I've searched for gramsci fashion & couldn't find anything related.. so i guess that is loss to time. Now what i want to talk more about is reading this character-wise for the twins.
the "odio gli indifferenti"(I hate the indifferent) tagline on his shirt is also a title from one of his many essays.
A basic reading of this would be that bisco hatori wanted them to "look cool" and that's it. But how I want to interpret it is that the hitachiin twins are just trying to "be cool" (grimes reading marx-esque) like look at this quote from the essay mentioned ↓
"Indifference… is parasitism. is cowardice. Indifference isn’t life. This is why I hate the indifferent…
I live. I am partisan. This is why I hate those who don’t take part. This is why I hate the indifferent."
This quote is about the importance of being politically active and joining socialist causes (italian partisans in early 1900s fascistic italy) but I also think this would go down with the mentally unwell & insanely rich who read jungian thought in middleschool demographic as something cool & fashion worthy.
An even more funnier interpretation is when looking back at that one line they had in EP15 where Tamaki said they were acting like annoying aristocracy: "we are the aristocracy & so are you, boss.",
it's very possible to infer that the twins are the most aware of their social class than everyone else in the club/school (outside of haruhi)... and/or at least in an incredibly ostensible way.. It's also highly likely the twins read marxist literature & really, I just thinks that's funny.
