me: why do I still pay attention to any drama about shipping when I could just ignore it and be at peace
me also: outlining my sociological case study of star wars shippers in my head
#in particular I want to study reylos and anti reylos god thats so twisted#but its like I've seen both sides and it's FASCINATING how the two groups do not understand each other#despite having more demographic overlap than people seem to think#I don't fully understand either but I understand a little bit of both#I am curious what the demographic differences actually are too#it's also fascinating how memes from one group filter over to the other group and are aggressively transformed#the groups don't act in isolation they are definitely shaped by each other#they aren't split along a political axis but they care a lot about maintaining cohesion#my initial read on it is that it seems like liberals vs liberals#different kinds of liberals with different ways of expressing liberality#with reactionary and left wing elements mixed in on both sides#but there's more to it than politics or culture or identity#is it a false dichotomy? a meaningless divide?#are the differences being exaggerated for the sake of group chauvinism?#what entices people towards the different ships and what keeps them in their community?#individual aesthetic pleasure? group bonding activities? ideology?#I just want to do interviews and shit#arguably I'm not as interested in canon as I am in the fandom at this point
