If I may...I think the problem is also amplified on various ends by two separate phenomena: 1) on the end of "people saying really gross shit to celebrities online by @ing them or even just obviously sexual shit like talking about mommy milkers in the mentions of some random person's tiktok or selfies that you find hot unprompted", it's also fueled imo, by the good old problem of people kind of thinking "if I say it on the internet it's not real". There is some truth imo, to the idea that people saying nasty or overly familiar things sometimes (not always there are plenty who KNOW its bad and are doing it on purpose AND it's still not an excuse ofc) just. Aren't really considering that this is a real person who will see their comments context free and thus it's easier to not just sexually but emotionally objectify someone in that like, these people kind of lose sight of the fact that if they went up to a stranger on the street irl and said this exact shit they'd get a "WTF creep" type of reaction AND they know that deep down which is why they act so different offline than online.

On the other front, I also think that purity culture is one of those terms certain people online need taken away like "gaslighting" because they throw it around without actually knowing fully what it really is or what it means??? I'm super glad you brought that up actually because god, I see it all the time. Like...the "you, a fellow adult, need my consent before you can wear Revealing Clothes around me or else you're a pervert and that's violating" thing or the "you need to Confess Your Sins before masturbating over someone or else it hurts them...somehow...even though ironically you're going to actually creep them out way more by y'know, telling them this shit they did not need to know instead of just rubbing one out already in your own damn room and leaving that between your ears like horny people with perfectly normal desires have been doing for as long as there have been humans and it has to date harmed nobody" - that IS very much purity culture.

But like you said, the way it gets thrown around...purity culture is a specific phenomenon usually rooted in certain religious ideas about sex and virginity and how the Wrong sexual activities can taint your moral worth and how what matters most in relationships isn't love or consent but Purity, doing things The Right Way. It's also tied up with modesty culture which I don't think would be too dramatic to say is its own form of rape culture - smarter people than me have written about it in much more depth.

But the point is, I lived a form of purity culture because of the flavor of Christianity that was my family's faith and that was my entire life for about the first 18 at least, years. I didn't even have it close to as bad as many did but it still did profound damage. And I can safely tell you purity culture is NOT "anyone anywhere not being totally down with whatever overly personal shit you want to say TO THEM DIRECTLY 24/7 just because they decided to be publically visible online or have a job that makes them famous". And as a survivor of ACTUAL purity culture, it is really starting to fucking grind my gears to see people online throwing the term around for things it does not apply to.

No but there’s something genuinely troubling about the way internet culture around sex (and the general allergy to nuance that so many social media users seem to have) has eroded the distinction between actual sexual harassment and objectification and just plain old sexual desire and attraction and any kind of sexual expression, or between purity culture and any kind of sexual boundaries, in a way that cuts both ways and doesn’t actually benefit anyone.

So you end up with people sincerely asking “isn’t this just purity culture talking?” when they’re being asked not to call strangers “daddy” or say things like “step on me” to their face. You end up with people advocating for actual sex pest behaviour in the name of avoiding nonexistent sex pest behaviour (asking people for their “consent” before you think about them while you’re wanking.) Either anything to do with sex is considered inherently good and sexualising other people to their faces is nbd, or anything to do with sex is inherently bad and nobody should so much as bring up the topic in a conversation with other adults, regardless of the tone and setting. There’s no distinction drawn between things that are actively said or done to someone or directed at them and things that a given person could just potentially come across or look for of their own accord.

And yeah, sometimes there is nuance and complication around these things and you have to use your brain in a debate around them. You can’t just say “if it could make someone uncomfortable, don’t do it” (plenty of people are “uncomfortable” seeing gay people kiss or hold hands in public, after all), or “you need everyone’s consent before doing anything that could potentially be construed as sexual” (same problem as before, and whilst this is absolutely true if it concerns things that are being done to them or actively involving them, phrasing it like that quickly devolves into the idea that you can “consent” to what another person is wearing.) So discussions of this kind end up getting sidetracked by the kind of people who think that “I don’t consent to not having everything my way” is a reasonable stance to take.

It’s just very frustrating that there are people on both sides of the debate who can’t see any meaningful difference between saying “I’d like Dennis Morennis to rail me” on their private tumblr account, or having some choice pleasant Dennis Morennis-related thoughts while getting off in their bedroom, and actively going up to Dennis himself and asking to be railed. And it’s tricky with the internet because these days you can never tell when people are trolling or not, but I think there genuinely are people who think like this. And that’s worrying.

A Discussion of One Approach to a Universal Characteristic

I have felt inspired yesterday to make this attempt as a text post on Tumblr. By the subject’s weighty history and definition, it should by no means be an easy endeavor. However, there are two individuals from my readings that have inspired me, named John Locke and George Polya. Although I own both of the texts that interest me by these men, I have not read those specific texts unfortunately. Another influence was the eloquence of Euclid’s axioms, indeed I have not read the Elements either except for like the first page. I tend to become distracted very easily, and this is not something that I am very proud of. 

Now I must reveal my passion for the works of Ramon Llull. He was the guy behind the most complete version of Characteristica Universalis, but that is only because he managed to inspire Leibniz to come up with his Characteristica, which was never really worked on or implemented, and the system that Llull created is called Ars Magna, in four distinct stages. The term Ars Magna itself with regards to Llull refers to the Ternary Art, which refers to the wheels or volvelles that he used have elements or principles being divisible by 3. Furthermore this also by coincidence is the third phase of the art, but the phase and divisibility of the wheels are distinct things. 

Enough of Llull. Leibniz is really the only person to be regarded here, as it can be assumed that he wished to update Ars Magna to the science of the time and his own distinguished opinion. That being said, he never managed to create such a thing, but merely wrote to his collaborators and associates about what a proper implementation of this Universal Characteristic would look like. His letters are somewhere in the order of magnitude of 10^5, which is a complicated way of saying 10,000. Indeed I do not remember the estimated number from the Wiki, but I do believe it was something like 30,000. 

By the way, the Wiki does list 21 different attempts at Characterica Universalis, which is the number if I recall correctly, that this scholarly text on Llull mentioned that the man had written this many different version of his system. Quite interesting, but I cannot lower myself into base numerology. That has been superseded. To return to Ramon Llull for a moment, the man allegedly got his system from the Sufis. This precursor system is called Zairja, and there are a couple of texts available on that subject, one written by modern scholars and another written by a Tunisian historian who wrote the Muqaddimah. A hint for those of you curious about the latter text: The chapter about Zairja is in the third volume of that text, and is available on the Internet Archive. 

Back to Leibniz; for some reason essay writing is quite tiring. From what we can discern about what he stated that this system would look like, well I have some bad news. Leibniz simply took the diagram that Empedocles created in antiquity and said “There.” What I mean by this is that Leibniz just took the four elements and their supposed connections, in doing so adding another four nodes to the diagram, and being content with drawing lines between said nodes in order to ratiocinate (think) on paper. Anyone can tell that this is follysome since we now know for a fact that the Classical Elements theory is rubbish. In fact, I have a hot take that it was not only responsible for the idea of “race,” but also the idea of depression. I have created an acronym for the various iterations of Classical Element theory, that is “EHTR” (pronounced ‘ether’) or Element-Humor-Temperament-”Race.” Indeed this may come as quite a shock everyone, but Kant the philosopher was really racist and decided to rank the “races.” I am not going to get into this, but I will say that it may have become esoteric or something through the likes of Manly P. Hall, who mentioned the same scheme Kant used, albeit reordering some things, after the latter mapped it to an analogy about the caste system mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita. I can feel the cancelation brewing already. 

There are probably many different ways to attain this Universal Characteristic. I find that I have provided enough introductory information on this subject, so let us move on to the main part of this essay. Unfortunately, this whole thing was spurred on by a feeling of grandiosity, so I really don’t know how valid my intuition is. Furthermore I forgot what it was that I could use to implement Charicterica Universalis. That being said, I think it was along the lines of a study of analogy, using mathematics, so that we could potentially describe the various processes that underlie reality. The other part was a return to metaphysics proper, or the three general distinguishing features of it according to some textbook, those features being categorization (which is what I consider to be important in particular with regards to this endeavor), thinking and a sense of supremacy regarding the method. Personally I really don’t think that the last one means much, and is in fact a detriment to updating philosophy as should be periodically done in my opinion. Science will always push the boundaries. 

I am going to split the remainder of this essay into three parts: The first part will be about analogy; the second, categorization; and thirdly an obscure paradox that I came up with last night, as a bonus for making it to the end of the essay. You could just skip to the paradox, if you would like, in fact I will bold the title for you, in case I have wasted too much of your time and am boring you. 

On Analogy

I envision analogy as not something fundamental, as the man who wrote Zen and the the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance stated that analogy is irreducible to sub-elements; and I argue against that position taken by the author of that text. I am honestly getting tired of writing and I have written the later parts of this essay before I wrote this part, so here goes nothing. 

In the next part I briefly mention knot and graph theory. I envision analogies as graphs, as I was inspired by Schrödinger’s book What is Life that the genetic material was a crystal. Not true, but why could this crystal represent mimesis, as opposed to “genesis?” (Genesis as in genes, an improper way to say that mind you.) Yes, I really think that this is the case, but it does sound kind of crazy now that I have it on paper after having it in my mind for a few years. I don’t know. I dislike the designation that Dawkins created for such things, the “meme” which he literally took from some German scientist with the same first name, and removed the ‘n’ in mneme to create this Internet garbage we see today. 

Then there are the developments with the idea of metaphor. I don’t really feel like getting into these because I am too tired and I keep making typing mistakes. Just know that it is possible to limit portions of the structure of the analogy to make it more congruent with other analogies or structures. Lastly, it really feels like the literary criticism movement is starting to claim all of the universe as its “text.” That is a portion of Structuralism, at least, according to PhilosophyTube. She stated that Structuralism started as literary criticism, and what do we as human beings do? Why we map the text to the whole of the universe. Some could argue that is a kind of metaphysics were it to be loosely understood. ...

On Categorization

The general gist of what I am thinking of here is that Ars Magna’s major issue is that it is not chaotic enough, if that makes any sense. What I am attempting to get at here is the thing about the questions generated in that system solely referring to the statements created. There is no architecture or complexity there to be studied and afterwards engineered, as it is just base multiplication to generate the questions. What I would like, is for the creation of the questions to be irreversible and chaotic, indeed those are separate things, much like the weather. Knot theory, or graph theory would come into play here, I am not sure which but that is what my intuition is telling me. Also, many statements could be superimposed to generate a set of questions, or a single question. Hopefully my mathematical studies will enable me to investigate this further in the future. 

It must be stated now that the whole category term does apply in my opinion to Ars Manga. This is because the system abstracts the categories into a table of about 54 “elements” which are then combined a second time to produce very short strings of text, for instance “BCD.” Of course, the strings could very well be longer, and could incorporate more intricacy in this manner, but it is really the interaction between all of these strings which constitutes the architecture of the system, although this is done in a manner contrary to the mainstream Lullists, which is an anachronism, really. 

Case in point the categories must translate into natural phenomena and vice versa. At the same time, if the categories were generative, then they must be irreversible in order to be as intricate as possible. The sky is the limit with this, “New Lullism.” I don’t feel like explaining any more, but if someone wants me to tell them about why the standard categories must be reversible, and the generative categories the reverse, then I will explain this another day. Indeed, it may be a false distinction; there may very well be four types of category system, that is:

Standard reversible;

Generative reversible (Ars Magna);

Standard irreversible;

Generative irreversible.

That is all for this part.

The Paradox

There is a possibility for a Universal Library, but the one available on the Internet is not feasible for conducting research on, because it is an art website and is not powerful enough to locate texts and be practical. I am talking about an implementation for the Universal Library called the Library of Babel. You can visit the website at libraryofbabel.info. I do not have the energy to disclose the theory behind this whole thing right now, but on request I will write about it another day. 

The mathematical constant “pi” supposedly does not repeat. Yet there is a trichotomy to be established here, when the constant is juxtaposed with the Universal Library, either; 

1). The Universal Library is effected by Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem (was stated by two separate mathematics professors to likely be the case);

2). Pi does indeed repeat minute portions of itself after a significantly large computation of it is conducted, with an upper bound order of magnitude of around 10^5000. Note that this is a back-of-hand calculation;

3). Pi cannot be mapped to the Universal Library.

This trichotomy may indeed be defective as I am not trained in logic, and also I had to make up the last one as I forgot what it was. Oh well.

How social media influences political life

Social Media is a tool and platform that people use to share experiences and opinions with each other. At present, users of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. are spread all over the world. The information transmitted by them has become an important content for people to browse the Internet. This has not only created a hot topic in people's social life, but has also become a means for politicians to run for elections. In 2016, two US presidential candidates competed on social media, turning a serious election into a national carnival. On November 9 of the same year, Trump defeated Hillary Clinton and was elected US President. After his election, he said that social media played an important role in his victory. Partner of the Socialflow company, Frank Speyscher, said that this year's US election is the first truly social media election(Andrews, K.T., Caren, N. & Browne, A. 2018). Trump has used Twitter and Facebook to break through the restrictions of mainstream traditional media, gain control of communication. In this study, I mainly conducted a partial study of Trump ’s behavior on Twitter and Facebook during the 2016 US presidential election, to further understand how politicians use social media to input values ​​into the public and learn more about the role social media plays in political life, the reasons for its formation, and the pros and cons.

 for this study: Qualitative research method. In the following, we briefly describe this method.

Qualitative research method: Qualitative research method is a method or angle of studying things based on the analysis of social phenomena and the properties of things. It is based on the generally recognized axioms and a large number of historical facts. It starts from the contradiction of things and describes and explains the things studied. For qualitative research, we must directly grasp the main aspects of the characteristics of things based on certain theories and experience, and temporarily ignore the differences in homogeneity in quantity (Snelson, C.L. 2016). Qualitative research methods are based on induction. This article will analyze Trump's use of Facebook and Twitter during the election to illustrate how social media helps politicians in their elections and governance, and thus analyze the social functionality of social media and its impact on political life.

According to the Federal Election Commission report, during the campaign sprint alone, Trump spent about $ 94 million, while Hillary spent $ 132 million. During the primary and general elections, Trump made a $ 340 million campaign plan, which included $ 6.6 million at his own expense, and Hillary's budget reached 581 million. Trump aide Parscale acknowledged that in the final days of the campaign, advertising costs in Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Florida alone exceeded $ 5 million (Woodward, B. 2018). The final FEC report showed that in the last minute of the Trump sprint campaign, the campaign team smashed about $ 39 million, and another $ 29 million was used for social media promotion (Lancet, T. 2016). Clinton ’s campaign team is more focused on traditional propaganda. She spends $ 72 million on TV ads and only 16 million on the Internet. The FEC believes that Trump ’s overall spending is more reasonable, and despite Hillary ’s stronger financial support, much of the expense in the election was wasted. Therefore, the New York Times said that Trump's campaign was unique in American politics and even in modern Western history(Enli, G. & Simonsen, C. 2018).

At the same time, Trump not only threw advertisements on Facebook, but also made some comments on Twitter. For example, he attacked his opponent on Twitter like this: "Based on the fraud committed by Senator Ted Cruz during the Iowa Caucus, either a new election should take place or Cruz results nullified." This tweet is straightforward, and most politicians won't say so easily. Trump's success is largely due to this candid statement and the social media that gave it the possibility to spread. He used this channel to reach voters, promote political views, and facilitate information exchange. On February 3, 2016, Trump sent 10 pushes to this topic on "During primetime of the Iowa Caucus, Cruz put out a release that @ RealBenCarson was quitting the race, and to caucus (or vote) for Cruz", Make every effort to degrade Cruz's behavior, to achieve the purpose of improving his image. According to a query on Trump's Twitter, Trump issued hundreds of tweets on the campaign between the 2016 campaign. Combined with the large number of ads and tweets thrown by Trump on social media, Trump is easy to reappear in the lives of voters, causing voters to pay more attention to Trump. Trump also had his own personality when he tweeted. He had “Jeb. Bush can't defeat Hillary, I'm the only one who can defeat Hillary!” During the campaign. Such controversial words did bring more attention to Trump. According to FEC polls, one of the reasons the U.S. public likes Trump is his honesty and outspokenness and entertaining text style, which has won Trump's support from many lower-level voters(Mair, J., Clark, T., Fowler, N., Snoddy, R. & Tait, R. 2017). What Trump has shown on this social media can be seen more as an entertaining expression and informal political propaganda that is understandable by most classes. Social media has broken the traditional restrictions on political communication of traditional media, which is one of the important factors for Trump's success.

Trump chose social media as his main self-marketing platform because of three powerful features of social media:

(i) Social media can accurately push information, which makes it easier to attract voters. Take Facebook's function Filter Bubble as an example. Filter Bubble divides different user groups according to the operations of users and friends of users in the daily browsing behavior, like likes, comments, etc., and then accurately push the user's favorite information to improve user stickiness. Trump made remarks such as "I don't worry about my daughter being obsessed with Playboy, she's so good, and if I'm not her father, I want to kiss her."( Bruns, A. & Nuernbergk, C. 2019) Based on the Filter Bubble mentioned above, Facebook will give priority to this message to those voters who often follow lace news, and these voters will naturally like and forward this message. In this way, Facebook will help them expand their influence by pushing them more Trump related information in the future.

(ii) Diversified advertising methods on social media improve the effectiveness of publicity. According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, only middle-aged and elderly people in the United States currently rely more on traditional media, and young people have regarded social media as the most important platform. Among 18- to 29-year-old Americans, 35 percent said that social media was the most effective way to get information about elections(Bruns, A. & Nuernbergk, C. 2019). Therefore, Trump puts a lot of advertisements on multiple social media, and the coverage of the advertisements is very wide, which is very conducive to his image of himself.

(iii) Politicians use social media to freely shape their image. American media believes that in the 2016 election, social media has become a public opinion-oriented shaper, and social media has become a political tool, which has a huge impact on voters(Kruse, L.M., Norris, D.R. & Flinchum, J.R. 2018). Social media has a very low user threshold, and anyone of any age can use it. Trump has shaped his image through Twitter and Facebook, and some direct and frank remarks are easy to spread among users, making it easier for Trump to harvest ordinary people's votes and most low-income people.

Although social media participation in political life has many advantages, it also has certain disadvantages. Politics is a very serious topic, which is about people's livelihood and national conditions, but social media has led to political communication showing a marketing trend, and attention is more important than the facts(Storsul, T. 2014). In the 2016 U.S. election, Trump has tweeted and Facebook reposted a lot of false information, Trump's own response to the fake news is also very perfunctory .However, these news did not bring a crisis to Trump at all, but also increased his attention(Lancet, T. 2016). Although social media can help spread the news quickly, failing to curb the false news will destroy public trust in the media and politics, and the entertainment of political communication on social platforms can easily make citizens more emotional than rational.

For the study of social media participation in politics, most of the literature has focused on observing Trump's messages on social media and the positive impact of social media on elections. Many news reports only provide a superficial interpretation of this phenomenon, without in-depth analysis of the factors that form the phenomenon. In this study, I analyzed not only Trump's tweets, but also the functionality of social media, and the operating mechanisms behind social media, such as how Filter Bubble can help Facebook lock in users and increase user attachment. At the same time, this study also explains why politicians are more willing to choose to operate on social media, explains why publicity on social media can attract more ordinary people, and why Trump wants to target This section has also been explained easily. Compared to other research, I carefully watched the Twitter and Facebook during the Trump election, and some related advertisements. This study analyzes the means used by Trump on social media and analyzes the meaning behind related tweets. It is not limited to the content itself, but also the social benefits of the text. Finally, this research raises the disadvantages of social media's participation in political life and analyzes it with critical thinking. Today, when social media has gradually become the mainstream media, people can enjoy the convenience brought by social media, such as efficient information dissemination and political transparency, and politicians can use social media to communicate directly with citizens(Bruns, A. & Nuernbergk, C. 2019). This is undoubtedly a good thing. But at the same time, it is also emphasized in this research that the efficient dissemination of information will also lead to the spread of false news, and the transparency of politics must prevent false news. This study analyzes the social functions and advantages and disadvantages of social media, which helps readers to make a better rational analysis.

The 1950s saw rock n’ roll becoming a major part of the cultural landscape. In the 1960s psychedelic rock was the new craze. The 1970s had disco, the 80s were about new wave, and the 90s saw grunge and hip-hop sell millions of CDs. It’s a flawed, simplistic and incomplete way to describe each decade, sure, but the fact remains that these are the genres most associated with every one of them.

When it comes to the 2000s though, the portrait is a lot harder to decipher. Sure, there were trends, but each time one died, four new ones emerged.

More than a single genre, what truly defined the 2000s was the growing presence of the internet. Slowly but surely, this new found connectivity helped usher a completely new paradigm of how music would find its way from the artists to the masses. Suddenly, radio stations and music television were not the only ones in control, dictating what is hot and what is not. Platforms like Facebook, Soundcloud and Bandcamp had yet to become the go-to destinations for new acts, but MySpace quickly established itself as a major factor in the musical landscape. It gave new, hip artists a platform to reach big audiences and create a massive buzz without having to play in every city or rely on giant label-heads (see: Arctic Monkeys, Lily Allen, Owl City, etc.) Later in the decade, the arrival of YouTube meant that creative, viral music videos could bring a lot of attention to an otherwise average band with little money (see: Ok Go). A sign of music’s importance to Youtube, ever since Bad Romance reached 178,4 million views in late 2009, the record for most views by a video on the popular website has always belonged to a music video. Meanwhile, programs and sites like Napster and Limewire meant that teenagers didn’t have to rely on pocket money and 20$ CDs to enjoy their favorite songs, as their iPods and computers’ libraries were expanding in both size and diversity. 

Looking back, it’s easy to believe that, even as the music industry was showing its first signs of weakness on a financial level, music fans were listening to more music than ever. It is precisely this trend that made the music so interesting in the 2000s. With so many different artists from different backgrounds just one shuffle away - from bedroom electroclash experimentation à la M.I.A. or Peaches to garage rockers like The White Stripes or The Strokes, to high profile, incredibly rich (and horny) rappers like 50 Cent or Lil Wayne - it was only a matter of time before genre labels became almost useless. In 2007, Rihanna went from R&B on Umbrella to new wave-informed rock on Shut Up And Drive in the span of few months. The same year, hip-hop’s new sensation Kanye West injected glam rock ambition on his third album Graduation before leaving rap almost completely a year later on 808s and Heartbreaks. The DFA label made punk music for the dance floor while dance artists programmed synths with so much distortion you could throw the devil sign in the air. Scenes were no longer limited to a geographical location and artists were more and more influenced by sounds from across the globe.

If the legacy of acts from the 1960′s and 1970′s is well established, the visionaries of the 2000s are yet to find that praise. Discussions about the best songs of all time steer quickly to The Beatles, Led Zeppelin or Michael Jackson, but it’s only a matter of time before the 00 artists get their part of the cake too. It is with this in mind that I am proud to present to you, through the next 10 weeks, a completely incomplete, ludicrous, but also very passionate and thoughtful countdown of the 100 best singles of the 2000s.

This is not necessarily a list of the most popular, influential or groundbreaking tracks of the decade, rather a commentary on the most effective tracks; those who aimed for the moon and landed right on top of it, those who induced goosebumps and those who should still fill dance floors in a few decades without any cringe. It will contain smash hits and underground phenomena. Indie darlings and hard-hitting hip-hop. Loud guitars and quiet electronic flourishes. It will be varied and all over the place, just like the decade that we’re celebrating here. It is not a definitive answer, rather the start of a discussion and a good way to discover some great music you might have been sleeping on, back when it was trending and buzzing.

Each article will present you, in decreasing order, 10 essential songs of the aughts from the countdown, with a quick description to place each track back in context and/or justify its inclusion. In order to keep the countdown as varied as possible, acts were limited to three appearances as lead artists. Each article will also include a Spotify playlist of all the songs revealed so far, when available.

100 tracks might seem like a huge number, but it’s impossible to contain 10 years of music in such a list. The Thrilling Adventure Hour

One of my favorite bits of entertainment over any medium. It used to update weekly because they used to do live shows monthly and split them into 4 parts, but they don’t any more. Similar to old timey radio shows, they had two segments (Sparks Nevada, Marshall on Mars, a western set on Mars and Beyond Belief, a supernatural detectivey sorta thing if the detectives were two socialites that loved each other and loved to drink) that always happened and then a bunch of other segments they would cycle through. Lots of stuff to listen back through, like 6 years worth maybe? and I recommend this to everyone.

Griffin McElroy and Nick Robinson take suggestions and try to brainstorm video games. Hilarious and I love it.

Sawbones

Justin McElroy and his wife, Syndee. Syndee is a doctor, so they do histories of medical stuff, whether procedures, diseases, notable people, but they make it funny. Can get kinda gross if you gross out easy, but very chill.

‘Til Death Do Us Blart

The McElroys team up with the guys from Worst Idea of All Time and watch Paul Blart Mall Cop 2 every American Thanksgiving and then talk about it and the podcast will go on for eternity. When one of them die, they have named successors to take their place. They only started 2 years ago, so there’s only 2 episodes, but I look forward to listening to this for forever.

Travis McElroy and his friend Tybee Diskin talk about stuff they frustrates them. This is one of my favorite podcasts because they talk about things like social media issues and relationships and LGBTQ issues and just a whole bunch of things. It’s very frank and there’s no judgement going on and they’re both around my age by about +/- 2ish years and it’s helped me figure out what being an adult means to me? and what kind of adult I want to be/am?

The Worst Idea of All Time

Two dudes from New Zealand, Tim and Guy, decided one day they were going to watch Grown Ups 2 every week for a year and then talk about it. They slowly descended into madness over the next year and then when it was over they decided to do it with Sex and the City 2 and then they descended into madness again and then they decided to do it a third time with the movie We Are Your Friends and they are 36 weeks into that and then they’re gonna stop and do other things. Rarely updates. I started listening to it because Jeffrey Cranor was on the first episode telling a story from his life about something Strange that happened to him. It’s mostly a storytelling kind of podcast, but since last april there’s only been 3 episodes.

Alton Brown has a podcast. He talks to people. It’s as interesting as you think it is.

Darkest Night

I forget how I found this one, too. Probably from one of those podcast recommendation lists? It’s recorded with one of those binarual mics, so headphones is strongly suggested for this one. It’s a horror podcast, and a pretty gory one, too. Very intense at times. 

Rose Buddies

Griffin McElroy and his wife, Rachel, watch the Bachelor family of products and then talk about them. I’ve never watched the Bachelor or any of those. This is one of my favorite podcasts.

The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel

Young Adult podcast! Made for younger kids, like 8-13 range probably? Young kids do the voice acting as well. This is a high production affair. Sci-fi kind of story, and a good story.

Mystery Show

Surprisingly charming. Real life podcast, like Serial, only Starlee Kine, the narrator/creator, is good at solving small mysteries. Only 6 episodes. A season 2 was planned, but then Starlee was apparenly abruptly fired from whatever company was producing this or something? She said she’s working on s2, but it’s a lot harder now.

Small Town Horror

Another horror/mystery podcast. Oddly distressing at times, but intentionally so.

State of the Realm

Final Fantasy XIV podcast. They just talk about the game.

Jerk City

Audio readings of the comics. Sounds like people call in to a voicemail box and read them. It’s very avant garde.

Silent Key

Another podcast by the Jerk City people. I’m... not really sure what this is? It’s like that thing, modern art elicits an emotion out of you but you don’t know what that emotion is or why? That’s why I still listen to this one.

The Dark Tome

A story podcast. The framing device is pretty good, a book that transports you to the story itself, but this feels like one of those shows that used to be on Saturdays at like 11 to trick you into learning about classic literature. Definitely feels like it should be a TV show rather than a podcast.

Surprisingly Nice

Travis McElroy and Hal Lublin (of Thrilling Adventure Hour fame, Steve Carlsburg from Night Vale) talk to people and have a “Surprisingly Nice” chat with them.

We all start somewhere, and I get that the whole ordeal of self-education and critical comprehension of living in AMERICA not as a nation but as a power structure is something you have to adapt to but naturally you all comprehend that it has to have happened before you came to the party, and as such not only have to address the issues of recent times that made you get “#woke” but older issues that have lost luster because supporters have exhausted themselves in the decades prior, or have personal issues, or have died/been imprisoned. There’s certainly plenty to help out that’s become Hot Topics! but there’s issues that have been going on for decades where a letter or phonecall or two also do wonders who maybe need fresh eyes, younger hearts and less depleted stocks of rage. Give someone’s 68 year old hippie aunt with arthritis a break, she’s already had to learn how to adapt to technology SINCE the typewriter in trying to organize!

B) As accusatory as this is, some of you are of course more aware of Chelsea’s scenario b/c she’s white and thereby her tragedy is inexplicably more resonant for some of you than someone who’s outside your racial demographic. Let’s be honest, I’m sure that there’s plenty of you who are aware of racism/prejudice/bigotry in the big ol’ scary world of THEE REPVBLICVN MVSSES but the fact is often even the most leftist group brings their personal baggage about race and will hold cynicism to those who don’t fit their ideals of revolutionary tactics b/c of thinking about their own communities before THE REVOLUTION ©. As a result, there are dozens of political prisoners who may have equal if not more injustice in their scenarios, but there’s someone getting that chapter of the story and going “Well, Gotta Hear Both Sides”. Y’all talk a big ally game, but do you really know the histories of what happens for your ‘comrades’ on the other sides of the playing field?

C) The fact is, a big part of this is based around the whole modern phenomena of National Big Government Transparency that Assange/Manning/Snowden and others are massive figures in. And that’s important that you pay attention because people are playing with your lives, you want to be aware of that... HOWEVER; much like people who cope with their sense of powerlessness on this earth by misdirecting it into fear of an ILLUMINATI CONSPIRACY, its very easy to get tunnel vision and pour your energy into the idea that the problem is the one at the highest power so seemingly removed from yourself. Please remember that the CIA/FBI/NSA/Military/Police are yes, heads of the same Hydra of corrupt oppression, but all use differing tactics and operate in different dimensions. Please worry about how racist organizations filter themselves into the police and military for the benefit of their operations AS WELL as the NSA violating rights to privacy on the internet AS WELL as boundless other general examples at every level from local to international. You don’t have to do everything, but you shouldn’t just allocate your energies to the things that feel distant and esoteric. Maybe in some way you helped Chelsea (and a victory’s a victory, that’s nothing to laugh at) but there’s people to you closer than you think who are in a sense of peril who don’t have the nation’s attention.
