if you spend any time at all in autistic spaces you'll at some point hear some version of the phrase "'high functioning' means your needs get ignored and 'low functioning' means your strengths get ignored" and it drives me up the fucking wall because if you're labeled as "low functioning" your needs also get ignored
#some people in this community are just. way too committed to this fantasy#that people labeled ''low functioning'' or peopled dxed as children or people whose autism is more ''obvious'' to allistics#are being provided with support and are having their needs recognized and accommodated#when that is simply not the case for the vast majority of autistic people#like do you even know what an hcbs waiver is? or how long the wait lists are to get one?#autistic blogging#functioning labels cw

As someone who enjoys religion blogging/discussions, I've come to realize that it's a good practice to be aware of the general signs/symptoms of religious-OCD thinking (aka scrupulosity), because if the conversation is taking on all the hallmarks of scrupulosity, it's actually a definitive sign that we cannot meaningfully and compassionately engage in a conversation about religion in a healthy way. I've actually had this play out a significant number of times online, and when I realized what it was, I also began to realize that the intrusive thoughts/obsessive and compulsive thinking are only ever fed by continuing the discussion with that person.
[[ Important edit to clarify why I am saying it's not healthy — made after I went back to look for more concrete facts about OCD or anxiety (I have GAD, not OCD, but many resources overlap since they're both anxiety disorders):
When Reassurance is Harmful — this explains how/why reassurance-seeking specifically about an OCD fear is a compulsive behavior, and engaging with reassurance-seeking interferes with recovery/management/treatment.
This table from the Anxiety Disorders Center lists key differences between Information Seeking and Reassurance Seeking.
This IOCDF page on Scrupulosity info for Faith Leaders identifies "symptom accommodation" as enabling. Two of the examples of doing this by participating in the OCD behavior are: "Engage in excessive conversation focused on if-then scenarios (e.g., "If I did this, then would X or Y happen? And what if Z was involved? How about W?")" And, "Repeatedly answering questions about ‘correct’ religious or faith practices."
That page also goes on to outline more info about reassurance seeking. "Although providing answers to (often simple!) questions may seem harmless, providing reassurance serves to maintain the anxiety disorder cycle." (This BMC psychiatry article cites a lot of related studies establishing this.)
The IOCDF page on What is OCD and Scrupulosity? ]]
Imo, the responsible thing to do is to recognize that (even if the other person hasn't outright stated it/isn't diagnosed)* the conversation is not about religion, it is about needing mental health support from professionals and experts. Talking to me, the layperson who enjoys chatting theology and my religion — is not only not helping, but is actively harmful. I'm not just talking about the person who I replied to today, either. Like I've said, I've seen this happen dozens of times in various online forums.
*[while I am against diagnosing strangers on the internet, it's important to realize A) lots of people don't know what Scrupulosity is, so it's possible they've never considered this is a mental health concern that could be treated, and that B) for the purposes of my concern, it doesn't matter if they actually have diagnosed OCD. The only thing that matters is that their thought-process causes them genuine distress/fear, and every response given to them seems to only incite new/additional distressing questions/thoughts, or further entrenches the original distress.]
Ultimately, any discussion aside from "you might want to speak to a mental health professional about scrupulosity OCD" seemingly puts me in the position of feeling as if I am being used for their self-harm. I hate that feeling. I do not want to be leverage for fear and pain. I have GAD, I despise the idea that I am making things worse.
No matter how much I love religious discussion, the answer in these cases is always "please reach out to an OCD specialist/mental health professional. I am not qualified to discuss this." And then to stop there. I have never once seen anyone stuck in this compulsive thought spiral be reassured or feel any better by hearing from someone else's approach to theology handled with things like empathy, compassion, logic, or even atheism. It doesn't matter what we say, how we say it, or how we relate to our own religion. The urge to engage in this kind of conversation in order to chat about religion is a sign that we are not equipped to help.
You can't have a conversation here, because intentionally or not, ten times out of ten, you are adding fuel to the fire. Just like people can't simply tell me something that would erase/talk me out of my ADHD/depression/anxiety disorder, you also cannot simply argue/reassure/persuade people out of scrupulosity. We should not try. We have a responsibility to consider that it's outright harmful to do so, and to disengage.
#this is a massive pet peeve of mine#im not mad at the people who responded about religion and religious thinking bc it took me time to realize what this was too#like im sure i used to view these kinds of questions in a more...idk flippant light when i was a teenager and maybe even in my 20's#as i became more educated about my own mental health though i started to realize the pattern in these fears#and like many of you i probably originally started replying to people with scrupulosity or similar religious anxieties genuinely#not realizing at first that replying to their fears or questions was inevitable harmful#not realizing that hey actually this is far above my paygrade#ocd/obsessive thinking and anxiety spirals can be crippling life ruining and immensely painful#and unfortunately my love of theological discussions sometimes tripped me RIGHT into what was essentially self-harm#so im not mad at other people for also making that mistake - but i am asking everyone to think about this actively#its too easy to leap in without considering if the discussion is healthy to have for our discussion partner#its definitely too easy to contribute to the pain and fear while only meaning to genuinely help what is misunderstood as a mere “worry”#bc these arent just small fears or worries but thoughts that are causing them immense pain

Understanding Transgender Rights: A Beginner's Guide
Introduction:
In recent years, the movement for transgender rights has gained significant attention worldwide. As awareness grows, it becomes increasingly important for everyone to understand the issues faced by transgender individuals and the rights they are advocating for. This article serves as a beginner's guide to understanding transgender rights, exploring the history, legal framework, and importance of these rights in today's society.
What Does Transgender Mean?
To begin, let's clarify what “transgender” means. Transgender is an umbrella term that refers to individuals whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. This includes people who identify as trans men, trans women, non-binary, genderqueer, and many other identities along the gender spectrum. It's essential to respect each person's self-identified gender and use the pronouns they prefer.
Transgender Rights Are Human Rights:
One of the central messages of the transgender rights movement is that trans rights are human rights. This means that transgender individuals deserve the same fundamental rights and freedoms as anyone else. These rights include the right to live authentically, free from discrimination and violence, and access to healthcare, education, employment, and housing without fear of prejudice.
The Origins of the Trans Rights Movement:
The modern trans rights movement traces its roots back to the activism of transgender and gender non-conforming individuals who have long fought for recognition, equality, and justice. While transgender people have always existed, organized advocacy for their rights began to gain momentum in the mid-20th century. Key events such as the Stonewall riots in 1969, led by transgender women of color, sparked a broader movement for LGBTQ+ rights, including transgender rights.
Trans Joy and Resilience:
Despite the many challenges faced by transgender individuals, it's essential to acknowledge and celebrate moments of trans joy. Trans joy encompasses the happiness, pride, and sense of community that many transgender people experience. It can be found in personal achievements, supportive relationships, and moments of self-expression. By highlighting trans joy, we honor the resilience and strength of the transgender community.
Understanding Transgender Rights:
Transgender rights encompass a wide range of issues, including legal recognition, healthcare access, protection from discrimination, and safety from violence.
Let's explore some key aspects of transgender rights:
Legal Recognition: Transgender individuals often face significant barriers to having their gender identity legally recognized. This includes obstacles to changing their name and gender marker on identification documents such as driver's licenses and passports. Legal recognition is essential for affirming a person's gender identity and ensuring their rights are protected.
Healthcare Access: Transgender people deserve access to healthcare that is respectful, affirming, and inclusive of their unique needs. This includes access to gender-affirming medical care such as hormone therapy and gender-affirming surgeries. However, many transgender individuals face discrimination and barriers to accessing quality healthcare.
Protection from Discrimination: Transgender individuals frequently experience discrimination in various aspects of life, including employment, housing, education, and public accommodations. Transgender rights advocates work to pass laws and policies that prohibit discrimination based on gender identity and expression.
Safety from Violence: Transgender people, particularly transgender women of color, are disproportionately targeted for violence and hate crimes. Ensuring the safety and well-being of transgender individuals requires addressing systemic issues such as transphobia, racism, and misogyny, while also providing support services and resources for survivors of violence.
Trans Rights Laws:
Several laws and policies have been enacted to protect the rights of transgender individuals, although there is still much work to be done. Some of these include:
Anti-Discrimination Laws: These laws prohibit discrimination based on gender identity and expression in areas such as employment, housing, education, and public accommodations.
Hate Crime Laws: Hate crime laws enhance penalties for crimes committed against individuals based on their gender identity or expression.
Healthcare Access Laws: Some jurisdictions have passed laws to ensure that transgender individuals have access to gender-affirming healthcare without discrimination or barriers.
Trans Rights Quotes:
Throughout history, many individuals have spoken out in support of transgender rights. Here are a few powerful quotes:
"Transgender rights are human rights." - Hillary Clinton
"We should indeed keep calm in the face of difference, and live our lives in a state of inclusion and wonder at the diversity of humanity." - George Takei
"We must ensure that trans people are treated equally under the law and are not discriminated against in any way." - Bernie Sanders
Conclusion:
In conclusion, understanding transgender rights is essential for creating a more just and inclusive society. By recognizing transgender people as valued members of our communities and advocating for their rights, we can work towards a world where everyone can live authentically and freely. Trans rights are human rights, and it's up to all of us to ensure that they are upheld and protected.
Through education, advocacy, and allyship, we can contribute to positive change and create a more equitable future for transgender individuals everywhere. Let's stand together in support of trans rights, now and always.

Learning accommodations request template
You are entitled to your education, and reasonable accommodations are required to be made for you, recognised as a right by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, article 24. Accessible and equitable education is also part of Australia’s disability strategy 2021-2031. I say this as a preface, because should you face resistance, it is important that you know your rights in this area.
Furthermore, you do NOT need to disclose your disability diagnosis, and the school or university is not supposed to ask. What they can request is a letter from a treating practitioner confirming you are eligible for disability supports. Your GP or an allied health professional can provide this.
Beyond that, you do not have to tell them your diagnosis. If asked, you can simply politely remind the person you are in discussion with that you do not have to disclose the nature of your disability, however you are happy to discuss your accommodation requirements.
I would recommend that for secondary school and University students you assume this letter will be required.
Accommodation request for school or university template:
Hello, My name is [Introduce yourself], I am a [Year level if in high school or course and year for university.]. I am writing to Request a meeting/a phone call/[other form of communication that meets your needs] to discuss learning accommodations in relation to my disability. Accommodations I am requesting are [state what you need. Examples include extra time on tests, the ability to type exams instead of writing, braille learning materials, sign language being available, different learning formats, extra time to get to and from classes, your classes being in close proximity to each other, exams in separate rooms, access to a clarifier for assessment tasks]. I have attached/will provide if needed a letter from my [Insert the type of practitioner who has provided or will provide your letter] which confirms the necessity of this/these accommodations. [if you have requested a in person discussion, phone call, video chat or any form of discussion that requires scheduling, at this point offer three dates + times you could have said discussion.] [if you have not requested a schedulable conversation, request an email back with a term that has an appropriate level of urgency. ‘as soon as possible’, ‘at your earliest convenience’, ‘before the term / semester begins’] so that we can ensure that everyone is on the same page. Thank you for your time, [your name again]
Who would you send this to?

Headcanons - Dante (DMC) x Autistic Female Reader (Yandere)
Dante's Yandere nature can manifest differently when he learns that you are autistic. Initially, his possessiveness and protectiveness may become heightened, as he sees it as his duty to ensure your safety, well-being, and understanding in a world that may not always be accommodating to your needs.
Once he becomes aware of your autism, Dante takes it upon himself to educate himself about the condition. He immerses himself in research, learning about autism spectrum disorders, the challenges you may face, and the ways he can support you better.
Dante's love for you deepens as he gains a better understanding of your unique perspective and experiences. He begins to appreciate your strengths, quirks, and the beautiful aspects of your personality that make you who you are.
When you're together, Dante remains attuned to your needs, ensuring that the environment is comfortable and accommodating. He may take measures to minimize sensory overload, create a calm and safe space for you, and adapt activities to suit your preferences.
Dante becomes fiercely protective of you in social situations, understanding that they can be overwhelming for you. He may act as a buffer, shielding you from stressful interactions or advocating for your needs when necessary.
Dante's Yandere tendencies may manifest in his possessiveness towards your well-being and safety. He may become hyper-vigilant, constantly watching out for any potential harm or mistreatment you may face due to your autism. While his intentions come from a place of care, it's important to communicate and establish boundaries to maintain a healthy dynamic.
Dante's love and support for you are unwavering. He encourages and celebrates your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem to others. He understands that progress may look different for you, and he is proud of every step you take.
In moments when you may struggle or face challenges due to your autism, Dante is there to offer unwavering support and understanding. He provides a listening ear, a shoulder to lean on, and a safe space where you can express yourself without judgment.
Dante's Yandere nature, while complex, can also be a source of comfort and stability for you. His unwavering dedication to your happiness and well-being allows you to feel secure, knowing that you have someone who will always prioritize your needs and embrace your unique qualities.
Note: Yandere characters exhibit extreme possessiveness and can engage in harmful behaviors. While this fictional scenario explores a dark and fictional relationship, it's important to remember that real-life relationships should always be built on consent, respect, and mutual understanding. Additionally, it's crucial to recognize that individuals on the autism spectrum have diverse experiences and preferences, so it's essential to have open communication and understand their specific needs and boundaries

My 504 Plan Story
It wasn't until the tail end of my freshman year of high school, after being a student for 11 years, that I found out that such a thing as a 504 plan existed. Until that time, I believed there were no other options, that I was completely on my own, and that I would just have to buck up and power through.
504 plans simply weren't talked about. There was the cookie-cutter general education classroom, or the completely separated special education classroom, no in-between, and absolutely no blending of the two. My therapist was the one who identified that I needed a 504 plan, only after I had already failed a class.
I have always benefited from the privilege of having a mild, non-apparent disability, and of course this isn't the case for everyone who has a 504 plan, but almost every accommodation on my plan should have been automatically available to all students. It would be impossible for everyone to have an accommodation like priority seating (and of course not everyone needs it), but many accommodations basically just boil down to respect. It makes sense for me to have a formal written plan because I need these accommodations regularly, but being able to take a break when feeling overwhelmed, show one's learning in an alternative way, have extensions and learn at one's own pace, take tests in a distraction-free environment and with enough time, and have the freedom to feel comfortable and safe should be universal. Students shouldn't have to feel they must earn consideration and kindness from their role models through proving they experience a sufficient level of suffering. Respect for students and their needs should go without saying, especially for those who do not have the privilege of being diagnosed, like I have, or for the younger students whose diagnoses have not been identified yet, or those who are too overwhelmed, stretched too thin, have scheduling conflicts, or are otherwise unable to have the several required meetings that it takes to meet with a provider, get a diagnosis, meet with a school counselor, meet with their teachers, and write and use a 504 plan. I sincerely hope that my classmates do not have the emergencies that would lead them to need my or other accommodations frequently, but when they do (and they will), they deserve them just as much as I do. I have watched my classmates be punished for things outside of their control consistently and throughout the grades. Life happens, in spite of, before, during, after, around, at, unavoidably, and taking precedent over school.
It isn't just jumping through all of the hoops of writing a 504 plan, but the additional, exhausting work of being able to actually use it. Unfortunately, I'm sure all of us 504 plan-havers have had some kind of negative experience around this. We've been told that it's impossible, that our necessary accommodations "aren't really going to work" for a teacher, or have received the unsolicited advice to drop a class, because there is no way to pass it and meet our needs.
Many of my teachers have been amazing, kind people who supported me before and after I had a 504 plan, and many have made assumptions about my experiences and me based off of it or simply refused to recognize it. One high school teacher who required random, unpredictable oral participation which caused me to have anxiety attacks or dissociate frequently asked me to stay back after class had ended to apologize and admit she "shouldn't be doing that to me," yet continued to call on me when I had not raised my hand. An administrator at my high school very publicly and loudly pulled another girl and me out of class in the middle of a lecture, to a chorus of "oohs...". The administrator wanted to tell us about requesting accommodations for an upcoming AP test, which, apparently, could not have been an email instead of an interruption to our class time, and prioritized the convenience of telling both of us at the same time over respecting our privacy. In the hallway, she discussed the girl's IEP in front of me and my 504 plan in front of her. One college professor told me it would be unethical to give me an extension unless she gave it to every other student in her class. I didn't see the issue with that; those who needed it would benefit from it, and those who didn't wouldn't be disadvantaged by having it the way those who do are by not having it.
In high school, meeting with my incredibly understanding and dedicated counselor a very easy and positive experience. She simply opened a word document, typed up the accommodations list my therapist and I had come up with, and emailed it to my teachers. My therapist and pediatrician signed notes, my parents and I met with my teachers and the principal, and that was that. Though using it was sometimes challenging, at least my plan was created by, for, and around my needs and me.
In college, my experience with accommodations was starkly different than my previous one in high school and than what I had expected from a small, liberal, predominantly BIPOC and working adults community college that espoused rhetoric about inclusivity and serving the community. I was so excited for my meeting with a member of the access services division, an entire group of employees whose jobs were dedicated to and revolved completely around accommodations.
The accommodations coordinator had already come up with a list of accommodations prior to our meeting, ever speaking to me, and knowing what any of my disabilities and mental health conditions were. Some of them I needed, and some of them were unnecessary and would have given me an unfair advantage over other students. Many of the accommodations I need were not available, either at all or in the way that I need them. If I need an extension for an assignment, I have to request it before the original due date, and it is up to the discretion of each individual professor to give me between a minimum of 24 and maximum of 72 hours based on how difficult they believe the assignment to be for me. I'm lucky if I can get a professor to respond to an email in the first place, and a professor in an online class with hundreds of students who has never interacted with me will not know how long I need, and should not be expected to make that decision without any information to base it on. Also, they have already decided on the original due date based on how difficult they believe the assignment will be, so it just doesn't make sense to ask them that and give them the responsibility of making a choice for me. Finally, if I was able to spend a stressful hour crafting the most perfectly-worded, respectful, polite, and professional email before the due date, then I would also have the energy, motivation, and emotional stability to do the assignment. When I can't complete an assignment on time, it's because I can't get out of bed and do anything at all or because I can't stop crying and calm down long enough to do it. I'm not in a place where I can write an email, either. Alternative assignments are not available, including for the oral presentations worth 50% of my grade, answering questions on the spot, and spontaneous debates without notes in front of the class.
I had hoped things would improve at my 4-year-university, where there are more resources and staff dedicated to helping disabled students. The rules were much the same as at my community college. My emails and documents to the disability access center were lost multiple times, I have to go through the process of re-requesting my accommodations every quarter (as if my autism will suddenly go away someday) and I was only informed that my dorm room accommodation was denied 5 days before moving in. It has since been appealed and granted but only when space becomes available. I was told that I am waiting for another student to vacate the room, and that students with this accommodation typically require the room until graduation. Oh, do they?
I know for sure my classroom will be different when I am a teacher. I understand how demanding and difficult that career is, and I do not want nor expect my teachers to upheave the tried-and-true teaching methods they have used for decades. My accommodations are simple, clear, and reasonable. If oral participation is required, then I will do it at lunch, before school, after school, during office hours, in-person or over zoom, whenever the teacher is available in a one-on-one conversation, or record myself and email the video. If that's not a possibility, I would feel much more confident with a weekly schedule posted online, so that I could at least know in advance and prepare myself for public speaking. I don't ask for special treatment. I can and will do the exact same amount of work and to the same standard as everyone else, but it may not be possible for me to do it on the exact same timeline.
A student's grades shouldn't have to suffer in order to meet their accommodations, or because their accommodations aren't being met. A student's selection of the classes they're signing up for shouldn't be informed by fears, anxiety, or doubt that their accommodations will be met. Many times, both before and after I received my 504 plan, I deliberately failed an assignment because completing it was not a possibility, or skipped class because I did not feel safe enough to attend, which made coming back the next day even more terrifying.
Going to school should not be a dreaded, stressful, draining series of almost insurmountable hurdles. School should be a place where students feel safe, included, and respected, not only because they deserve it, but because it will provide an example for them for how to treat others and themselves. Students should be taught from a young age to advocate for themselves and they should know that there are options available to them, and that their disability, circumstances, and who they are should not prevent them from receiving a quality, comprehensive education.
There is always, always, always a way to meet a student's accommodations. There is a way for a student with social anxiety who is unable to complete any assignment that involves public speaking to earn an A+ in their speech and debate class. There is a way for a student who has severe depression that significantly reduces their motivation to pass AP calculus with flying colors. There's a way to teach students with disabilities without the student's learning or the academic rigor of the class being sacrificed or the student's mental health being pushed aside or ignored, or an additional burden being placed on the teacher. There is a way for every student to be supported, celebrated, and challenged, in every subject, to succeed and to fail, to find their strengths and weaknesses, to be self-actualized, capable, and independent, to give and receive help, and to learn, if we are willing to find it.

It's one in the morning when she arrives on his doorstep.
Travis opens the door and gestures her to come inside.
It's as dark and quiet in his home as it is outside. He clicks on a tiny lamp to provide some glow, gestures to a beat up sofa for her to sit on.
Laura takes a seat and Travis sits on the arm of the nearby armchair, his arms crossed and his voice low, "So, what do you want to do?"
Her eyes widen before she visibly blinks and he sighs, looking away, "It's your body, Laura. Not to mention I took away your option of choice for two months. And I'm never doing that again, so...up to you."
Travis turns back to see her lower her head, to see her play with her fingers while she thinks. She's wearing a trench coat two sizes too big for her. It makes her seem...hollowed out.
Her face more so, voice cool and placid as she says, "I'd like to keep it."
"Okay. Have you told your family?"
"No one to tell."
Travis hopes he manages to convey (even without her looking at him, even without a word) how ridiculous that sounds, how impossible only for her to explain, "Mom died young. Dad didn't want to raise me. I've lived with my grandparents my entire life and we were never close. Not everyone thinks of family as the most important thing in the world."
Travis tries not to flinch at that. He's sure he fails.
"Alright. What about Max's family?"
This does make her raise her head and there. There, there, there! There's the fire. The spark inside her eyes that enchanted him from the outset, even though he knew it shouldn't have.
But, he was a monster, a beast to her beauty, locking her up against her will. What did it matter if he was drawn to her? He'd already fallen - no reason not to wallow at the bottom.
But seeing it now, remembering it so well, Travis recognizes that it still enchants him even as snaps, "I told you! It's-!"
He holds up one hand to stop her, "I know, Laura. I know. But...if you want to play it that way. If you'd rather say the baby's his..."
"I'm not doing that!" The heat in her words matches the fire in his eyes and it'd be so easy to fall into an antagonistic verbal sparring match but that man, the one who would have been up for that, is dead and gone, so he just holds up his other hand and does the calming down motion with quiet 'okay's.'
Laura, for her part, also appears to no longer be the girl who was more than ready for a fight. Especially with him. The fire dims some and while he doesn't like to see it, he doesn't really feel up for a fight right now either.
Especially about this.
"It's a big responsibility."
Laura shoots him a look, "I'm aware."
What she's really saying is, I'm not stupid. Travis never thought she was. Even when he'd said it. Still, "What about friends?"
Once more she seems confused. Travis crosses his arms again, shrugs, "A support system... it's important..."
"What about you?"
The sound of his swallowing echoes in his ears, "What about me."
"Do you..." She's back to fiddling with her fingers, gaze directed downwards, "Do you support me?"
"Yes." It comes out immediately. Not even a second after she asks. It's instant. No thought needed.
"What-? Ah-?" Laura sniffs, shifts uncomfortably where she sits, "What role do you want to play?"
Travis doesn't know how to answer that. But his heart - a long dead muscle - thumps. Hard.
"What do you want me to-?"
"Jesus, Travis! Just-!" Laura hisses and surges to her feet, one hand rubbing at her temple, "Stop being so goddamn accommodating and tell me what you fucking want to do!"
Travis sits up straighter. His heart thumps again. A crude creature coming to life beneath his ribs.
"What do you want, Travis?" Laura looks at him, face set. Serious. Determined.
All the air in Travis leaves him in a rush, "I want to keep it too."
They look at one another and, in that moment, an understanding is reached. An unspoken, precarious one, but an understanding nonetheless.
They both want the baby.

Looking at how media has progressed, specifically TV shows, it's so funny how quickly the 'new model' takes over everything and people just...idk, freak out? heavily criticize? get a false sense of superiority over? any show that steps foot outside their newly expected box.
Memories are short, we know this. But it really wasn't long ago that TV shows put out pilots that were filmed entirely separate from the rest of the season and that pilot had to do really well in order for the show to be picked up at all. This led to pilot episodes being suuuuuper blunt about the concept, characters, world, and plot (and many times some stuff retconned in the subsequent episodes). Because those TV shows that survived have become well known and well loved, those first episodes/seasons have been rewritten in people's minds to the point where they genuinely don't remember how hamfisted writing was at the beginning of the show - because that's how they got people to be interested in watching.
It wasn't part of the model to 'show not tell' and stretch basic character beats out for the entire season. Due to the format, they front loaded exposition to let the watcher get a feel for the characters/world and THEN slowed down and settled in. Once we moved to a show structure where things were connected (part of a franchise), shows stopped front loading so much though it was still there- after all, they were still airing week-to-week on cable. But they trusted the 'built in' audience because the show was based on an already popular thing.
Then Netflix started dropping shows in one huge chunk. Now, you didn't have to worry about hooking a viewer immediately and shoving the whole world building exposition into the first episode, you just needed to give them the basics (especially if it was fantasy) and then provide a cliffhanger at the end of each episode that would support the 'binge' model of viewing.
Now, we've started to shift back to a weekly format for many shows, though they all seem to be still part of franchises, so that audience is already built in. But we do get '2 episode' or '3 episode' premiers to let the set-up take it's time while still giving viewers enough to ground them in the world and look forward to more.
So the point here is that none of these writing formats is 'wrong' and none of them are 'right'. They shift to accommodate how the show is going to be viewed. When people criticize 'wonky pacing', I just can't help but roll my eyes. Maybe you personally don't like the pace, but the pace isn't 'wrong'. Hell, I love high fantasy and people freak out all the time about the slow pace of that. People see shows dropping at an unconventional rate and declare that it's because the studio has no faith in the project and it's bad, actually (see Echo, which was really, really, good actually).
When people criticize 'heavy exposition' in first episodes, I roll my eyes again. That's what you do when you're introducing people to a world (especially a fantasy one) and the story isn't centered around figuring out how the world works. Sure, if you like slowly figuring out how the world works, then a show that doesn't explore that might not be your cup of tea, but recognize that and know that that's personal taste, not objective writing truth. First episodes can be REALLY GOOD and also have heavy exposition.
I like being able to look at all the different ways storytelling is done - the different paces, focus on different things, etc etc. Classics are written VERY differently from modern stuff, stories from different cultures are extremely different from ones you've always grown up with, thrillers are going to be told differently from cozy fantasy. None of these are 'wrong' or 'bad writing' because it's not the other. They're just different.
I guess what I'm saying is get out of your little 'media critique' bubble and understand there's no one correct way to write a story. Your obsession with 'spotting bad writing' is actually defeating your ability to critically examine media outside your extremely narrow world view. Look back to the past and realize things were done so differently then, but understand that it wasn't 'bad'. Look to other cultures/genres and understand one isn't 'better' than the other and should be the 'standard'.
It's ok to prefer one way over the other, but be careful tossing out the blanket, nearly meaningless now, 'bad writing' criticism as if you actually know what that means.
(Why does all my annoyance at 'media criticism' feel like it always circles back to Cinema Sins and the irreparable damage they did to people's brains?)
#media criticism#tv shows#media writing#tv writing#writing advice#I never know what to tag stuff like this because it's not like it's explicitly 'fandom' related and I DO NOT want to just attract the most#annoying parts of fandoms I tag#because this is about like all recent tv shows - since everyone has now decided that they're media writing experts and their opinions are#actually factually what 'good writing' is even when it's the most dog shit takes I've ever seen in my life

Headcanons of Aziraphale taking care of GN partner with Chronic Illness/ Disability
1. Aziraphale creates a serene and accessible living space, ensuring comfort and ease of movement for his chronically ill partner. His bookshop was not accessible, and at first he didn’t quite notice how much it wasn’t but as time went on he took stock and made changes.
2. He becomes a connoisseur of herbal teas and soothing concoctions, tailoring blends to help alleviate specific symptoms or provide comfort. He’s done lots of research and though he doesn’t think it’s a cure-all and won’t force it on you, he is truly hopeful it helps you. Even if it’s just tasty and soothing.
3. Aziraphale takes the time to learn about his partner's condition, if there are support groups in the area he is happy to go and learn. He actively participates in their healthcare journey by escorting them and/or attending medical appointments with them. The most he’s learned from about your condition is a true expert, you. He knows you’re the number one authority of your experiences.
4. He designs a routine that accommodates their energy levels. If a day is planned and you may need a nap, he’s thought of it, en luring you to go to sleep early by taking you to bed and staying with you? Absolutely. Occasionally making it so your boss miraculously texts you not to come in or to start late when you need extra rest? Just a wonderful coincidence. He is always prioritizing rest and self-care while incorporating activities that bring joy without overexertion.
5. He is an expert at gentle touch and comforting gestures, offering a reassuring presence during moments of pain or discomfort. Running his fingers through your hair, peppering Angel soft kisses onto you, rubbing your back or anything that needs a soothing touch.
6. Aziraphale becomes adept at recognizing signs of fatigue or distress, adjusting plans and activities accordingly to prioritize his partner's well-being. You barely have to say anything and he’s already making changes, which can be really nice because he never makes it seem like he’s changing it because of you. He knows you would push through your symptoms if given the option, so he makes the call. (Although he’s willing to focus if you really feel otherwise that day)
7. He collaborates with medical professionals to explore complementary therapies or holistic approaches that may enhance his partner's quality of life. He takes lessons in massage therapy, or other practices that may help you so he can take care of you at home, in instances where you prefer another provider or he can’t help adequately, he is eager to help find a provider.
8. He celebrates small victories and milestones, recognizing and acknowledging the resilience and strength shown by his chronically ill partner. He thinks you’re the strongest human he knows and couldn’t be prouder of you.

Embracing Neurodiversity: World Autism Awareness Day and Month Shaina Tranquilino April 30, 2024
Diversity should be celebrated, and it's crucial to recognize and understand the spectrum of human experiences. World Autism Awareness Day, observed on April 2nd, and Autism Awareness Month throughout April, serve as vital reminders to promote acceptance, understanding, and inclusion for individuals on the autism spectrum.
Understanding Autism: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental condition that typically appears during early childhood and affects a person's communication, social interaction, and behaviour. However, it's essential to remember that autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning it manifests differently in each individual. Some may have exceptional abilities in certain areas, while others may face significant challenges in everyday tasks.
Breaking Stereotypes: One of the critical goals of World Autism Awareness Day and Month is to break down stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding autism. People with autism are often portrayed in the media in limited and sometimes inaccurate ways. By promoting awareness and understanding, we can challenge these stereotypes and foster a more inclusive society.
Celebrating Neurodiversity: Neurodiversity emphasizes the idea that neurological differences, including autism, are natural variations of the human experience. Just as we celebrate cultural and ethnic diversity, it's equally important to embrace neurodiversity. Each individual, regardless of their neurological makeup, brings unique perspectives, talents, and contributions to society.
Promoting Inclusion: Inclusive practices benefit everyone, not just individuals with autism. By creating environments that accommodate diverse needs, we foster a sense of belonging and respect for all. Schools, workplaces, and communities can implement strategies such as sensory-friendly spaces, clear communication techniques, and inclusive policies to ensure that individuals with autism can fully participate and thrive.
Supporting Families and Caregivers: World Autism Awareness Day and Month also highlight the importance of supporting families and caregivers of individuals with autism. Raising a child with autism can present unique challenges, from accessing appropriate services to navigating social stigma. Providing resources, support groups, and access to inclusive education and healthcare services can make a significant difference in the lives of families affected by autism.
Advocating for Change: While progress has been made in raising awareness and promoting inclusion, there is still much work to be done. Advocacy efforts are essential in advocating for policies that protect the rights and dignity of individuals with autism. This includes advocating for accessible healthcare, education, employment opportunities, and accommodations to ensure equal participation and opportunities for all.
Taking Action: As individuals, we can all play a role in promoting autism awareness and acceptance. Whether it's educating ourselves and others, volunteering with autism organizations, or simply being more inclusive in our daily interactions, every action counts. Together, we can create a more understanding and supportive world for individuals with autism and their families.
World Autism Awareness Day and Month serve as important reminders to celebrate neurodiversity, promote inclusion, and advocate for the rights and well-being of individuals with autism. By raising awareness, challenging stereotypes, and fostering understanding, we can create a more compassionate and inclusive society where everyone is valued and respected for who they are.

Why you should McFucking Vote Democrat, because Biden is a bureaucratic genius
Ok so like. Bureaucracy is where the fiddly bits of how laws actually work happens. It’s anonymous, unthanked, very hard-working people in cubicles and terrible polo shirts who have to use the worst software ever invented. They’re the ones making and using the spreadsheets for “do you qualify for XYZ or not.”
Biden knows the House Republicans won’t let him pass any new laws worth jack, so his solution is to fine-tune the bureaucracy and its application of existing laws. It’s freaking genius. While a Republican president could technically reverse these reforms, in practice they mostly won’t, because it’s boring procedural spreadsheet stuff and not big flashy new laws banning things. The Republicans aren’t even going to notice half the things he’s fixing.
It is, I reiterate, absolutely genius. Biden’s DHHS has requested that cannabis be downscheduled to the level of prescription cough syrup, he’s stopped disability discrimination in organ transplant decisions and custody decisions, he’s reinstated VA benefits for people were discharged from the military for being queer (which means so much less medical bills for them, and access to prescription drugs including HIV meds), he’s the first president to join a picket line, his FTC appointee is suing Amazon for being a monopoly, union-busting is now punishable by being forced to recognize the union, as VP he was heavily involved in the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare…and that’s just what I can remember off the top of my head while completely exhausted. For those worried about his age, he’s obviously still smart as a tack based on his bureaucratic strategies, and if something were to happen to him, Harris is similarly competent and similarly well-versed in bureaucracy, and she’d make similar policy decisions if in office.
Like, Biden is implementing very similar reforms to what I’ve always wanted, and in pretty much the exact same ways I’d do them. It’s to where I’d vote for him in a primary now. It’s all very well to say “Medicare for All,” but then how do you implement it? And I think Biden is the kind of person who’d have a real answer to that, and more importantly, know exactly who to call on to work out the bits that aren’t his area of expertise, such as “how many computers, servers, and new hires would CMS need to accommodate a quadrupling of beneficiaries?” Or to write the changes to tax code (such as eliminating the income cap on Medicare taxes) to fund said influx.
Compare and contrast Trump’s absolute debacle of his pet border wall. Or his muslim ban. Or covid. Like, the only good thing that came out of his presidency was the increase of the standard deduction for personal income tax, and then that later inadvertently screwed over people working from home during the pandemic because they couldn’t deduct the new home office supplies like desks and office chairs that they had to buy.
Also compare and contrast how quickly 2021-2023 have passed by, compared to how 2017-2020 seemed to drag on forever. I know that, even with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine threatening to turn into WW3, I’ve had distinctly less fear of nuclear escalation during Biden’s presidency than during the Orange Turd’s.
Finally, consider what Biden will be able to do once he doesn’t have to worry about getting elected again. Yes, healthcare reform. Employers currently pay the largest share of health insurance costs for people under 65, and those costs have been going up, largely due to insurers’ and for-profit providers’ price-gouging. Said employers are increasingly upset about these costs, to the point that they would likely be willing to opt for single-payer if the state or federal taxes to support it were, say, 80 or 90% of what they’re currently paying in insurance premiums—which would probably be the case, that or less, since CMS would negotiate lower costs, probably no more than 200% of regular Medicare rates. I can tell you for sure that Aetna is paying hospitals 5 times that, and that extra cost is reflected in premiums and (for self-funded plans) in claims, which employers have to pay.
Will the combined lobbying forces of industry giants like Walmart, Amazon, Boeing, Sitel, AT&T, etc. outweigh the opposing lobbying forces of UHC/ OptumRx, Aetna, Blue Cross, CVS, Walgreens, the legion third party administrators, and for-profit medical groups?
Well, we won’t find out unless you vote Democrat next November! Because Biden is a genuinely progressive and competent president and I’d like to keep him, and no one with a single sane braincell wants the other guy. The other guy will probably get us into WW3 and turn it nuclear. Please register to vote, and then actually vote.

VoIP Conference Calls: Benefits to Your Business
VoIP for Business is a staple in the market. The majority of businesses are using it because they recognize the benefits that it brings. VoIP for Business has been proven to be beneficial by the increase in remote work and working at home after the pandemic. This has led to a greater need for videoconferencing as a corporate communication medium.
Until recently, an employee was unreachable when they left the office, except for the occasional evening spent at home or their accommodations on the road. Communication between the staff, office and other employees was difficult.
Business VoIP solutions has revolutionized the way we do business. With Business VoIP's built-in video-conferencing capabilities, you and your team will never be out of touch, whether inside or outside the workplace. Mobility is now possible.
The benefits of conference calling to a company are indisputable if we expand the traditional definition of conference call, which is a group of people using tabletop cameras and microphones, to include group video calls with smart devices.
Cost Benefits
VoIP Conferencing is much more cost-effective than video conferencing between employees at different locations. Toll charges are avoided in many cases because the calls are made over the Internet and not the PSTN. This is especially useful for conferences that involve long-distance or international connections.
Staff mobility and accessibility has been improved
Video calling via WiFi is supported by smart devices such as tablets and smartphones, which has great advantages in terms of accessibility and mobility.
On their smart device, a member of staff can receive and make voice and video calls and take part in individual and group video conferences just as they would if seated at their desk. This can also include VoIP features like call forwarding, pick-up and voicemail retrieval, depending on the capabilities and smart device.
WiFi is becoming more accessible to remote workers in both public and client spaces. The majority of businesses offer WiFi and many public places, like shopping malls, now offer free WiFi either through their tenants or themselves. Many hotels offer free WiFi and some municipalities also provide this service.
By using public WiFi, remote workers and mobile employees can connect to the corporate network anywhere that there is WiFi.
The full integration of mobile and remote workers in the workforce has now become a reality.
Teamwork can be improved
Instead of using a cellphone or PSTN, staff can make voice and video call and conference calls with smart devices connected to a WiFi network. The ability to communicate visually with another member of staff can improve teamwork. Communication errors and misunderstandings can be reduced.
This allows mobile and remote workers to take part in teamwork, teamwork events and other teamwork activities as if they were onsite with the rest of their team.
VoIP Conference Calls are a great way to bring together teams from both local and distant locations in order to solve a problem.
The response time and quality of the responses improve. Staff can be more responsive when they are able to contact colleagues or customers at any time.
They can be more productive without worrying about losing touch with their team members.
Workplace efficiency can be improved
Staff no longer have to arrange meeting locations. All participants can take part in video conferencing from wherever they are.
Staff being available for group video calls to customers and other staff members at any time and anywhere, improves workplace efficiency.
Business VoIP can bring tangible benefits for an organization. It reduces communication costs and keeps staff in contact. It is difficult to measure the intangible benefits that improved communication brings, such as increased teamwork and morale.

Best HDPE Pipe Fitting Tips for Choosing the Right One for Your Project
The key to ensuring a reliable, long-lasting pipeline system is the selection of the right HDPE pipe fittings. HDPE pipes are recognized for their flexibility, durability, and resistance to corrosion, but due to the variety of applications that call for them, for example, from water supply, gas distribution, and irrigation, there are various requirements for each project. Consider these tips as guidelines while choosing the best HDPE pipe fittings for your project:
1. Know Your Project Requirements
Before purchasing HDPE pipes and fittings, a selection process must evaluate the true requirements of your project. Identify the fluid or gas being carried, the pressure rating required, and the conditions to which the pipes will be exposed in an environment. This will help you determine the appropriate type of fitting to meet operational needs and ensure smooth performance.
2. Selection of the Right Type of Fitting
HDPE pipe fittings are available in a range of shapes. There are elbows, tees, couplings, and reducers. The type of fitting will be subject to pipeline design and layout. In case you have numerous branch points in your system then you need to use HDPE tees or cross fittings. Draw a comprehensive mapping of how your system will look like and what you will require.
3. Compatibility with HDPE Coil Pipe
If you’re using coil HDPE pipe for your project, ensure that the fittings available are suitable. The coil pipes made from HDPE are flexible and are often used in projects such as irrigation and rural water supply requiring long continued lengths. The fittings used must be able to accommodate the diameter of the pipe, providing easy connections that will not compromise the integrity of the system as a whole.
4. Quality and Standards Compliance
Always select HDPE pipe fittings based on quality and relevant certifications to the standards. Pipes as well as pipe fittings standardized to nationwide or international standards are the most reliable for performance and durability. Manufacturers that have always been known for high-quality output can be selected.
5. Installation Process
The ease of installation differs depending on the type of HDPE fittings you choose, whether heat-fusion or mechanical. Understanding this can help you make an informed decision based on your budget and time constraints. Heat-fusion fittings, for example, create a completely free-flowing joint, providing superior performance but requiring specialized equipment and skilled labor. In contrast, mechanical fittings are simpler to install without the need for welding, though their pressure resistance may be lower.
6. Compare Resistance and Lifespan
Other factors, such as UV exposure and temperature fluctuations, which your project will be subjected to, can have an effect on the lifespan of the HDPE fittings. You should choose fittings that will last, by selecting fittings that can withstand the factors to which they will be exposed. Good-quality HDPE pipe fittings are UV resistant and durable against temperature fluctuations and chemical corrosion.
7. Cost
The cost of the HDPE Pipe should not affect the quality of the pipe. HDPE fittings bought cheaply may fail and you will be spending more money in the long run for its maintenance. Instead, opt for a brand that can balance affordableness with good quality.
Conclusion
Choosing the right HDPE pipe fittings is crucial for ensuring compatibility, quality, and long-term durability. Selecting fittings tailored to your project’s specific needs guarantees a pipeline system that is both reliable and efficient. By partnering with trusted manufacturers like APL Apollo, you can be confident in securing top-quality materials designed to withstand the test of time and support the success of your project from the start.
