Mohiniraj Mandir, Newasa, Ahmednagar, Maharashtra
Rohan Gadekar wrote : This is the only temple in Maharashtra dedicated to the charming incarnation of Lord Vishnu in Nevasa village in Ahmednagar district.
The present temple is built by Sardar Chandrachud of Ahilyabai Holkar. This idol of Mohini incarnation of Lord Vishnu, which the devotees call "Mohini Raj", is in the form of Ardhanari Nateshwar. So while worshiping the ornaments, the idol is adorned with both sari and pitambar.
The short story of Mohini Avatar is that the nectar from the churning of the sea is taken away by the demon gang. The gods surrender to Lord Vishnu for nectar. Then Lord Vishnu assumes the form of Mohini and the demons who fight among themselves to drink nectar come to the fore. The demons forget the beauty of Mohini, so Mohini helps the demons to drink wine and the gods to drink nectar. Devotees believe that this charming incarnation took place on the banks of the Godavari near present-day Nevasa Goa.
The construction of the temple is in the style of urban architecture and the temple is located on a high pedestal. The entrance to the temple is on the north side and there is an idol of a gatekeeper at the entrance. The canopy in the auditorium is weighed by puppets playing instruments and dancing. Dashavatar of Lord Vishnu is engraved on the forehead band on the door frame. The sanctum sanctorum has a 4.5 feet high idol of Shri Mohini Raja wearing a conch shell, chakra, mace, nectar cup, nose ring, waist belt, crown on the head, tode and pitambar, Utsav idol and neighbor Shri Lakshmi.
