Falling Water by Frank Lloyd Wright, Pennsylvania, 1935. A stunning example of early mid-century modern architecture. It is often referenced for its adherence to the concept of biophilia, humankind’s inherent need to connect with nature. Originally designed as a nature retreat for the owners, it certainly supports the elements and principles of biophilic design. Terrapin Bright Green, a design consulting firm, identified 14 principles under 3 categories - Nature in the Space, Natural Analogues, and Nature of the Space. Several of these principles can be analyzed in the design of Falling Water. The obvious one here, a reflection of Nature in the Space, is a “visual connection with nature” ...the structure is built to work in harmony with nature, not to impose itself upon it. The benefit here is reduced strain on the sympathetic nervous system, i.e. enhanced focus on mental stressors and improved recovery time. Natural Analogues are evident as well. Interior stone features were constructed using boulders found on site. Additional, large ledge rock was left to protrude through the main floor. This material connection with nature serves to create a distinct sense of place in the local ecology. Lastly, the prospect of mystery, risk, and peril speaks to my own values. Curiosity. The balcony cantilevers precariously over an active waterfall. Perspective vistas display layers of inflective detail. Opportunities to explore under controllable risk can support strong dopamine responses. It elicits positive feelings - I’d argue, more positive than any number of Facebook likes could produce... I’ll expand on this analysis in the next few days. You can find that article on my LinkedIn profile - Adam C.E. Braun... . . . . The tree is trying to take on a fertile and round shape but the city cuts it, shapes it to fit over passing vehicular traffic below and flowing power lines above. 🌳🏢 #arewedoingthisright #infrastructure #tree #mapletree #citytree #architecturetuesday #streetlight #downtown #city #urban #primarycolors #red #blue #yellow #pnw #portland #rosecity #honoringtrees #photoplacegallery @photoplacegallery (at Miller Paint)

It's not high style architecture but it's the built environment all the same. Houses on the water, boat dock stores, marinas, they all have to tie together, work together in a way that both separates them and holds them fast to the tides. 🏠⛵️ #architecturetuesday #houseboat #builtenvironment #waterfrontproperty #kayak #oregoncity #oregon (at Oregon City, Oregon)

The windows on the 13th floor, around 9am in the summer on a clear morning hold the sun just so around this old timer as he waits for his wife to be finished with her appointment. 🌞🏢🕘 #architecturetuesday #oldtimer #portrait #sun #window #city #urban #waitingroom #bees #iphone #cinematic #nap (at Allergy Clinic)

Another humble house on #architecturetuesday. In the US South, Summer is very hot and very humid. Near the gulf coast homes begin to grow longer eaves and deeper set windows that stay closed or covered most of the day, sometimes behind large or overgrown laurel, azalea or boxwood. The grass is as thick as the humidity and the sun knows you hide inside. The tea is sweet. Sometimes fan sprinklers run all day for the kids and occasional passerby to pass through. Happy Fourth everyone. On another note, what some still call the War of Northern Aggression still echoes in our politics today - Them against Us. Let this old house stand as evidence that all are welcome, anyone can find shelter, you can come sleep on the sleeping porch and walk the grounds catching fireflies. And for cuss sake, just stop arguing. 🏠❤️ #architecturetuesday #fourthofjuly #southernplantation #civilwar #blessyourheart #outofthephone #iphone #stockimo (at Carnton)

"A flower pot that's cracked on the steps to your front door. That's my wish for you, to be thirsty and barely hold water." Hopeful and promising, cruel and pointed - you never know what your neighbor's thinking. It's #architecturetuesday and it's not about the architecture of houses at all. Remember that it never has been. Rather a recognition of form and place and how those definitions can move, at least they can transfer. And that transference - from music or architecture or personal experience with a place or a friend - is real. Some are tapped into that more than others. 🏠🏺 #matthewryan (at Tennessee)

Traveling Tuesday and missed the post so here's a late #architecturetuesday submission. Again, not so much about architecture specifically but light, form, etc. There was a colossal scotch pine to the left of that covered Beetle a couple weeks ago. Removing it changed the light in that area and revealed a big hole in the canopied urban landscape. 🌲🕳 #volkswagenbeetle #urban #landscape #city #community #iphone #outofthephone #portland #sellwood #softlight #canopy #goforawalk (at Sellwood, Oregon)

I am realizing it is not so much the structure itself as it is the patina of time, the basic elements of two-dimensional art (weight, line, shape, etc) via photography and the various presentations of hue and light that attract my eye to architecture. As well, it is the taller buildings on this block and the sidewalk trees that soften the light on the old red brick facade on SW Clay. 🌤🏢🌳 #architecturetuesday #urban #portland #brick #cityliving #city #pdx #downtown #citylight #swclay #driveby #sidewalk (at Portland, Oregon)

A twist, so to speak, on #architecturetuesday as I repost an image from my friend @christopher.erickson who is in #Barcelona. Designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito, the Porta Fira towers (this red one is home to a hotel), share a dialogue with nature and history. Their organic shape points to the softer lines of nature as well as the work of local architect hero/villain Antonio Gaudí. Thanks Chris! 🌲🏢🌲 #architecture #toyoito #toyoitoarchitecture #spain #city #urban #hotelportafira (at Hotel Porta Fira)

#architecturetuesday This might have always been a look at the act of looking. Squares and frames are studies for future constructed images. This image, I am thinking that a sense of timelessness comes more often from a similar sense of banality. An empty, clean scene allows the viewer to create time and place all on their own. ☁️🍽📷 #portland #industrial #urban #innercity #only #pnw #iphone #vsco #photography (at Portland, Oregon)

Public schools are, for the most part, utilitarian structures but simple should not mean lacking. Paint and tile can only do so much to buildings and systems over 100 years old. Who didn't see the lead pipes being an issue 50 years ago? ADA? Air conditioning? What about class size, teacher compensation? And this year the entire middle school track program would have been cancelled if not for parent volunteers. 🎪👩‍🎓 #trackpractice #longjump #athletics #pps #portlandpublicschools #volunteer #publicschools #nationalcrisis #education #infrastructure #architecturetuesday #playground #prisonyard #portland #notanotherbondbutnoonewillvoteforsalestax (at Sellwood Middle School)
