The Max Taut Haus: A Poetic Ode
In Kreuzberg's heart, where history sighs,
Stands a structure beneath Berlin skies,
Max Taut's vision, a testament to time,
A department store, now heritage prime.
Here, the walls of Oranienplatz speak,
Echoes of commerce, ideals they seek,
With Taut’s spirit, democracy framed,
An architecture of openness, famed.
Max Dudler enters, in Ungers’ wake,
A house within a house, for progress’ sake,
In halls where history and future blend,
Architecture’s dialogue, no end.
Dudler’s lines, both strict and free,
Mirror Ungers’ cubic decree,
A homage to the rational, the clear,
Each structure whispers, "Architects were here."
In the 90s, I roamed these sacred halls,
Witnessed the silent stories on the walls,
A sanctuary of form, of space and light,
Where past and present met in pure delight.
A house within, energy untamed,
Max Taut and Dudler, eternally named,
Their legacies intertwined in stone,
An architectural acme, forever known.
In this edifice, ideas take flight,
Crafting a narrative, day and night,
Silent yet profound, the walls exclaim,
Architecture’s triumph, its enduring flame.

Lutyens’ Chequered Dream
In black and white, his vision took flight,
A chessboard spread, through day and night.
Lutyens saw life like a book unbound,
Each page turned in structures found.
Marble kissed brick in balanced rows,
Craft and craft, where symmetry grows.
A story told in pattern’s grace,
Where light and shadow find their place.
Granite meets timber, a firm handshake,
The hands of craftsmen make no mistake.
Each line, each curve, a whisper’s song,
In chequered floors, the echoes long.
As Gothic spires met classic forms,
He wove together new-born norms.
Materials danced to his design,
Craftsmen’s hearts beat in every line.
Each stone, a letter, each wall, a word,
In silence, the tale of his art was heard.
A timeless love for contrast bright,
Written in black and in white.
—
This poem reflects Sir Edwin Lutyens’ fondness for contrasting materials and structured patterns, as he often harmonized diverse architectural elements. The chequered motifs in his work symbolize the turning of pages, a story unfolding where craftsmanship and materiality intertwine. Lutyens’ approach was as much about narrative as it was about form, fusing history, tradition, and innovation.
