Dean Larkin Explores New Design Trends at Salone del Mobile 2023
Salone del Mobile in Milan, Italy took place at the end of April, and I was and I was able to attend thanks to the generosity of FLorim, an Italian manufacturer of large-format porcelain stoneware tiles and slabs who has been in business for 60 years.. This annual furniture event is one of the most important events in the design world, and it was exciting to see all of the latest trends and innovations. Many of these new design trends highlighted the design world’s increasing commitment to sustainability, which is something that is obviously important to us at Dean Larkin Design. Some of the exhibitors we saw debuted versatile and customized seating with a variety of color and material combinations. There was also a focus on tech-enabled furniture at Salone del Mobile 2023. This included furniture with built-in speakers, lights, and other smart features. I saw sound-absorbing fabrics and tables and a completely digital water distribution system that offers hot or cold water that could be plain or carbonated.
Tumblr media
History of Salone del Mobile
Salone del Mobile was first held in 1961 and has since grown into a global event that attracts over 300,000 visitors from around the world. The fair showcases the work of over 2,000 exhibitors from over 30 countries. This year’s event was the first I have attended since the pandemic, and I found many, many new offerings that I was excited about. Below are a few of my favorites.
Highlights of Salone del Mobile 2023
Below are a few design highlights from Salone del Mobile 2023 that I found the most remarkable.
Lighting
The show included a lot of cool lighting debuts. These were all interesting and one trend that we saw in many of the exhibits was lighting with leather hangers. These are a couple of examples.
Baxter Furniture
Baxter debuted some interesting furnishings with color, material and style combinations that I loved. Some of the seating colors were aquamarine, pink and electric blue, which you can see in the chair pictured. I really liked the lighting, which also featured the leather hangers, and we hope to incorporate these into our Larkhill project.
GRAFF Faucets
GRAFF is a company that is actively green, which again you know is something we value. GRAFF has implemented ISO 14001, (an international standard for effective environmental management systems) and meet strict conservation standards. I really liked some of the faucets they debuted this year, which had fun colors and shape combinations.
Salone del Mobile 2023 was a great opportunity to see the latest trends in design and the event really showcased how designers are using their creativity to address challenges like sustainability.
FLorim Visit
While on this trip to Italy, I was also invited to go behind the scenes at the FLorim factory. FLorim manufactures high quality contemporary home appliances that I love. So FLorim took me and some other designers to dinner and then the factory, which was amazing. The factory was over half a million square feet, and they only had about 28 people working because things were so automated: like a ballet of machines running around. The facility was so clean you could eat off the floor, and solar powered. One of the most impressive things we saw at the factory was a kiln that was 150 meters long that went up to 1200 degrees centigrade. We were able to look through a viewing opening to see the heat. We also saw the new porcelain products they debuted at Salone del Mobile. I love natural stone, but porcelain does have some health benefits over real stone.

Sustainable Design in Modern Architecture: Building a Greener Future
In recent years, sustainable design has become a fundamental principle in modern architecture. As the world grapples with environmental challenges, architects are embracing innovative design strategies that prioritize energy efficiency, conservation of resources, and minimizing environmental impact.
Tumblr media
Benefits of Sustainable Architecture Design
Environmental Impact: Sustainable buildings significantly reduce carbon emissions, energy consumption, and water usage, mitigating their environmental impact. They contribute to a healthier ecosystem, preserve natural resources, and combat climate change.
Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings: Since sustainable buildings reduce energy consumption, they can allow lower utility costs for building owners and occupants. Over time, the energy savings can offset the initial investment in sustainable design features, resulting in long-term cost savings.
Improved Indoor Environmental Quality: Sustainable buildings prioritize indoor air quality through proper ventilation, low-VOC materials, and filtration systems. This promotes occupant health, productivity, and well-being.
Enhanced Market Value and Appeal: Growing awareness and demand for sustainable design drive demand in residential and commercial markets.
Sustainable design, also known as green or eco-design, involves creating buildings that minimize their negative environmental impact throughout their lifecycle. Sustainable design encompasses various aspects, including energy efficiency, water conservation, use of environmentally friendly materials, waste reduction, and integration with the surrounding ecosystem.
Sustainable design in modern architecture is a trend and a necessity for creating a greener future. Architects are pivotal in designing buildings prioritizing energy efficiency, resource conservation, and environmental responsibility. Therefore, sustainable design is a win-win solution, and sustainable buildings contribute to preserving natural resources, promoting a connection to nature, and combating the pressing challenges of climate change.
Architects continue to embrace sustainable design principles and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable built environment. Los Angeles architecture firms, professionals and clients must recognize the importance of sustainability and actively seek innovative and eco-friendly solutions in their projects.

Creating a Sense of Place: How to Design Office Parks that Foster Community and Collaboration
Tumblr media
Office parks are the new "it" places to work. They offer everything that a traditional office park has, in addition to plenty of space for employees to collaborate and innovate. That creativity in design is something that's becoming more important than ever as we face increasingly complex challenges like climate change and sustainability.
We need to separate our traditional viewpoints from the cement towers of older office park design and open our minds to innovative creations that foster a sense of collaboration and build community identity. Here are the key components of creating a sense of place in your office park:
1. Building Community Spaces
You can create a sense of community by providing spaces for people to meet and gather. These can be informal, like a coffee shop or cafeteria, or more formal, like an auditorium or conference room. But no matter what kind of space you choose, you want to be sure it fits the goals of your office park, has enough space for an audience, and provides the amenities you need for residents to succeed. As a side note, never forget the importance of good bathroom placement!
2. Prioritizing Accessibility
Accessibility should be a vital component of any office park design. Not only is it an essential factor in creating a sense of place, but it improves employee experience and enhances overall satisfaction with your workplace.
As part of this effort, some companies have begun prioritizing accessibility features like wheelchair ramps at entrances, elevators that are large enough for wheelchairs, accessible restrooms with wide doorways, designated parking spaces close to buildings, and even lower countertops in break rooms so that wheelchair users don't have trouble reaching them. There is a delicate balance between legal requirements and personalization that residents will appreciate.
3. Creating an Identity
Identifying your company's values and culture is an excellent place to start with office park design. What do you want employees to feel as soon as they walk into the building? Is it important that each department has its own identity, or are there specific spaces where everyone will congregate regardless of their role in the company?
This comes down to the various colors, materials, and design elements that support your overall feelings and goals as a business park. Not necessarily branding, but a way to self-identify the space so the surrounding community feels welcome and appreciated.
4. Incorporating Nature
Nature is an integral part of your employees' lives. It can help them feel refreshed, inspired, and renewed. Office parks that incorporate nature into their design create a sense of place for employees, which in turn leads to better collaboration and community.
Create outdoor spaces with plants and trees that provide shade and privacy. These areas should be located near buildings so people can easily walk between them if they want to take a break from working inside all day long.
If possible, include a fountain or pond in one area of the park so people can enjoy listening to its sound while they're taking breaks away from their desks. Even a tiny waterfall can make an excellent addition.
5. Providing Opportunities for Socializing
It's easy to overlook the importance of creating opportunities for socializing. After all, you're probably thinking about how to design your office park to accommodate its employees' needs. But if you don't consider how people will interact with each other at work, you might end up with a very isolated office park design that doesn't support collaboration or community building.
6. Extend the Design onto the Rest of the Property
The building is only part of the office park design. The rest of the property should also be designed to be a place that people want to spend time in, and can be used as a destination for events or social gatherings. You can do this by creating walkable paths through your property, including outdoor seating along them, and even adding decorative lighting or art installations along those paths.
Do not forget to focus on the roads, parking areas, and pathways where your visitors will travel the most. You want them to get a positive experience from the moment they arrive at your office park property.
Office parks can be a great place to work, but they need to be designed with balance in mind. They have the potential to be more than just places where people go each day. Instead, they can become communities that foster collaboration and productivity.
As long as you take the time to consider all the various features of office park design, you can have a beautiful space that people will enjoy for generations.

Today's Black History Month illustration is of Paul R. Williams, the first Black member of the American Institute of Architects.
Tumblr media
Paul Revere Williams was born in Los Angeles in 1894 and was orphaned at four years old. Immediately after high school, he landed internships and jobs at local architecture firms despite the racial prejudice. Williams took classes at the Los Angeles Beaux-Arts School and then attended USC’s School of Engineering. He became a certified architect in 1915.
Tumblr media
In 1920, Williiams was appointed to the first Los Angeles City Planning Commission, and the year after, he received a license to practice architecture in California and started working for John C. Austin. In 1922, he opened his own firm and served as an architect for the Navy during WWII. In 1923, Williams became the first Black person inducted into the American Institute of Architects.
He was an outstanding draftsman, and had the skill of rendering drawings upside down. He developed the skill so that his white clients (who might have been uncomfortable sitting next to a black architect) could see his drawings right side up across the table from him.
Tumblr media
Williams designed over 2,000 homes, including the homes of Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz, Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
Tumblr media
Along with designing homes for the wealthy and the stars, he designed affordable homes, public housing, civic, commercial and institutional buildings. Williams was also part of the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) planning and design team.
Tumblr media
Some of his works include the Golden State Mutual Life building in LA, St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, and the Los Angeles Superior Court.
Tumblr media
He spearheaded the redesign of the Beverly Hills Hotel, a renovation which cost $3 million. The cursive letters on its sign are based on his own handwriting. Outside of LA, he remodeled buildings and spaces for Howard University (dentistry school, architecture and engineering college.)
Tumblr media
He received many awards including the NAACP Spingarn Medal and USC’s Distinguished Alumni Award. In 1957, he became the first African American to become an AIA Fellow. In 2017, Williams was posthumously awarded the AIA Gold Medal, America’s highest honor for an architect. He was the first Black architect to receive the Gold Medal.
Tumblr media
Williams passed away in 1980 at 85, leaving a mark on West Coast architecture and aspiring Black architects.
Tumblr media
I’ll be back tomorrow with another illustration and story!
