Amitabh Sengupta: Odyssey Through Six Decades of Artistic Mastery
In a career that spans over six decades, Amitabh Sengupta has emerged as a towering figure in the art world, earning global recognition for his large abstract works that seamlessly blend European modernism with Indian cross-cultural experiences. Having concluded a retrospective at the Birla Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata, last year, Sengupta now presents a new chapter with his exhibition “ODYSSEY” at Bikaner House, New Delhi.
This exhibition features 30 carefully selected works from his retrospective, including three monumental canvases, among which “Banadevi” and “Banadevta” stand out as a stellar pair. These works weave abstraction into mythic figures, showcasing Sengupta’s brilliance as both a figurative and abstract master. The mythic essence of the figures is emblematic of his ability to bridge tradition with modernity.
Critic Uma Nair lauds Sengupta, stating, “Sengupta is both intellect as well as aesthete of a rare order. His most important collector in India is the distinguished Kiran Nadar, who acquired his work in 2005 at Taj Mansingh in Delhi.” According to Nair, Sengupta’s oeuvre is deeply rooted in his observations of antiquity, featuring influences from rock paintings, pyramidal wonders, and hieroglyphics. His works embody a balance between stunning figurative studies and abstract art, offering art lovers a spectrum of experiences. Nair adds, “We can imagine the beauty and power of ancient scripts through his textured terrains, which evoke sunrises and sunsets in subtle, resonant shades.”
Sarala Bannerjee of Artworld Chennai, who discovered Sengupta years ago, emphasizes his mastery over diverse mediums. She highlights the tactile quality of his works, saying, “In this exhibition, it is the register of his touch and his tensile and tactile understanding that defines the beauty of his pliant brush. Viewers are left to imagine the fluid flow of molten lava as well as landscapes bathed in a sea of prismatic colors.”
Sengupta’s journey in art began with his education at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1966 to 1969. During the 1970s and 1980s, he exhibited extensively in Paris, delving deeply into abstraction and symbolism. His time in Nigeria added another dimension to his work, as he incorporated African cultural motifs into his modern abstract style, exhibiting at the National Museum in Lagos.
In the 1990s, Sengupta returned to India, becoming a prominent figure in the Indian art scene. He held major solo exhibitions at esteemed venues, including the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai, the Birla Academy of Art & Culture in Kolkata, and Artworld Sarala’s Centre in Chennai. His works have also been showcased in international exhibitions across New York, London, and Tokyo, cementing his global appeal.
The “ODYSSEY” exhibition at Bikaner House opens on January 31, 2025, and runs until February 12, 2025. It will culminate in the launch of Sengupta’s book, published by Artworld, which chronicles his artistic journey over six decades. This richly illustrated volume, featuring essays on his work, will be unveiled by renowned architect and fashion designer Meera Ali on February 8, 2025, at Kalamkar, Bikaner House, New Delhi.
Sengupta’s legacy is a testament to his ability to transcend geographical and cultural boundaries, creating art that resonates across time and space. “ODYSSEY” reflects the depth and diversity of his work, celebrating a lifetime of artistic excellence.

[ad_1] Vida Heydari Contemporary is excited to present 'Terraform', artist M. Pravat's new solo exhibition with a series of artworks that have been presented for the first time in New Delhi. Oil, Canvas, Fired Bricks, Cut Slate, Concrete Board, Metal, LED Light Strip, Teak Wood 127 x 279.5 x 10 cm (50 x 110 x 4 in) Diptych By bringing together a diverse range of materials—bricks, stone, pigment, dust, paintings, LED lights, and found objects—Pravat presents a body of work that probes into the interrelationships, recesses, and tensions between our built urban environment, and the natural world. His sculptures and installations, which appear as fragmented reminders of the urban landscape, evoke a sense of being under perpetual construction—a limbo of incomplete transformation that has increasingly become characteristic of all metropolitan cities today. Each artwork, with its detailedly laid out network of materials, serves as a cartographic guide to a world that is now replete with relentless geo-engineering, large-scale development projects, and climate emergency. M. Pravat’s ‘Terraform’ is an invitation to reflect upon a crisis that also extends into the larger biodiversity on our planet. It is an attempt to recentre our sensibilities, and actions to ensure a sustainable future for us all. The exhibition will preview on Saturday, 18 January 2025, from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at STIR Gallery, Delhi - 2, North Drive, DLF, Chattarpur Farms. It will run through 25 January 2025. The artist will be present at the exhibition preview. About The Artist M. Pravat was born in 1972 in Kolkata, India. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in painting in 2002 and his Master’s in 2004, both granted by the Faculty of Fine Arts at M.S. University, Baroda. M. Pravat’s art practice examines architectural forms and materials through a fractured lens, using sculpture, installations, paintings and photography. He believes that our lives are unquestionably shaped by the built environments we inhabit. Along with images and materials, architecture plays a pivotal role in the formation of our sensibilities, and in shaping our experiences and understanding of space and form. His practice is deeply embedded in the manifestations and imaginations of architectural spaces, where he attempts to shed the representational familiarity associated with our built environments, and in doing so, finds himself appropriating, redistributing, and reconfiguring the relationship between material, architecture and environment. Over the years, his works have been presented in solo and group exhibitions, biennales and art fairs in Colombo, Delhi, Dubai, Mumbai, New York, Seoul and Zurich. His recent solo exhibitions include “From Debris, We Rise” presented by VHC at Bungalow Eight (2024); “Liquid States” at 1x1 Gallery, Dubai (2017); “From Today, I Have No Future” at Aicon Gallery, New York (2017); and “Blue Print” at Nature Morte, Delhi (2011). He is a member of the Layout collective along with artists Navid Tschopp, Susanta Mondal, and architect S. Boka. Their projects have been exhibited in the Kochi - Muziris Biennale, 2012, Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, 2013, INSERT, 2014, the Colombo Biennale, 2014, and in non-institutional sites in Delhi and Zurich. He was a recipient of the Pro Helvetia artist residency in Switzerland. M. Pravat lives and works in New Delhi, India. At the heart of this futuristic city stands the ABCD Building, a marvel of modern architecture and a symbol of innovation. This iconic structure not only showcases cutting-edge design but also embodies the vision of a smart, sustainable, and efficient urban environment.
The Vision behind Dholera SIR
Dholera SIR is part of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) project, aimed at creating a world-class industrial zone supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure. Spanning over 920 square kilometers, Dholera is poised to become a global manufacturing and trading hub, attracting investments and generating employment opportunities.
The ABCD Building, which stands for Administrative and Business Center for Dholera, is the administrative nucleus of this ambitious project. It serves as the central command and control hub for the city's governance, planning, and development activities.
Architectural Excellence
Designed by the renowned architectural firm CP Kukreja Architects, the ABCD Building is a testament to modern design and functionality. The building's architecture reflects a blend of aesthetics and practicality, ensuring it meets the needs of a rapidly growing urban center while also standing out as a landmark.
The structure is characterized by its sleek, futuristic design, with clean lines and a striking façade. The use of sustainable building materials and energy-efficient systems is a key feature, aligning with Dholera's commitment to environmental sustainability.
Smart and Sustainable Features
One of the most remarkable aspects of the ABCD Building is its integration of smart technologies. The BMS can adjust these systems in real-time based on occupancy and environmental conditions, ensuring maximum efficiency.
The ABCD Building also incorporates renewable energy sources, including solar panels and wind turbines, to reduce its reliance on conventional power. Rainwater harvesting systems and wastewater recycling further enhance the building's sustainability credentials.
The Nerve Center of Dholera
As the administrative hub of Dholera, the ABCD Building plays a crucial role in the city's governance and development. It houses various government departments, including the Dholera Industrial City Development Limited (DICDL), which oversees the planning and execution of infrastructure projects within the region.

Smart home systems, virtual reality design previews, and 3D printed decor items are some of the cutting-edge technologies on display. These innovations not only enhance the functionality of living spaces but also offer a glimpse into the future of home design.
Workshops and Seminars: The exhibition is not just about passive viewing; it's an interactive experience. Renowned designers and industry experts conduct workshops and seminars, sharing their insights and expertise. Topics range from color theory and lighting design to sustainable architecture and the impact of digital technology on interiors. These sessions provide valuable learning opportunities for professionals and enthusiasts alike.
Networking Opportunities: For professionals in the interior design industry, the exhibition is a prime networking venue. It facilitates interactions between designers, suppliers, and clients, fostering collaborations and partnerships. The presence of international exhibitors also opens up avenues for cross-cultural exchanges and global business prospects.
The Impact on the Local Industry

Environmental Interpreter
My ideal role as an environmental interpreter or an entrepreneur (EI/EE) would be that of a Landscape Architect (LA). Many people misunderstand the true meaning of LAs, many think it has to do with only maintaining land-scapes; grasses, parks, gardens, etc. But it is a much more broad of field than that. To describe an LA very briefly, is someone who is striving to bridge nature, the built world, and human perception. Interpretation as described in Interpreting Cultural and Natural Heritage: For a Better World by Larry Beck, Ted T. Cable, and Douglas M. Knudson, means "interpreters produce, direct and act in the greatest shows on earth" a platform that helps or bring " meaning to people about cultural and natural heritage." The importance of Landscape Architecture as a method to reactivate feelings, as well as to re-experience the psychological welcoming that natural diversity provides, is completely integrated into its design vision.
This role is not limited to a specific place; However, personal preferences are always welcomed. In a modern state of society, one cannot truly be local to one area, but given the opportunity, I would explore my options to exhibit the meaning of nature and cultural perception to the dwellers in developing countries, or areas of developed countries that lack the infrastructure to experience the importance of nature. Specific locations include the rural part of Gujarat, India (my birth state), and coastal countries like Malaysia, and the Philippines, which are hindered by the wrath of nature, rather than the beauty. Also dabbling in urban design in populated cities, such as Rome, Mumbai, Rio, and Bangkok.
Skills needed would not be limited to ones listed; as one is always growing and is never truly finished developing internally. Some include the importance of accepting the various different forms of culture their are globally and their individual connection to the nature. People have developed differently in various parts of the world, and understanding that ideologies differ is the fist step that one should have as a EI or EE. Another one is that of Gratefulness. You cannot connect someone to a culture and nature without yourself first believing in the importance of these facets within our lives. Being grateful enables one to view the world in a blissful manner, limiting unnecessary feuds with may be encountered through ha difference of mind. Some specific skills may include the ability to management time efficiently, engage with the community, having a deep passion for conservation, as well as communication skills to interpret others POV. Limited by a word limit I cannot delve further, but am happy to reply to any comments =).
